I own nothing
The stayed in that embrace until the doorbell rang; Steve and Evelyn looked at each other with sigh. Steve kissed her forehead before he turned to head up stairs to answer the door with Evelyn on his tail; he stopped at the door and looked back to make sure Evelyn was completely behind him. She gave him a look with a sigh. Steve raised his eyebrow questioningly.
"Overprotective Steve" Evelyn said in his mind.
"Evelyn sweetheart, I love you and you are the most important thing to me. Aren't I allowed to be a little overprotective?"
"Yes, you are. Steve, but not every person that rings the doorbell is a treat. I love you overprotective and all."
Evelyn wrapped her arms around his middle. Steve looked down to her hands and let out a sigh; maybe he was a little overprotective but she was his world, as brought one of her hand to his mouth and kissed it. She rested her head on his back smiling all the while. Steve shook his head and smiled before went to open the door.
It was James, Steve smiled taking his bags. Evelyn poked her head out behind Steve's shoulder with a huge smile on her face. She came around and threw her arms around James. He just smiled and rubbed her back. They pulled away; Evelyn leaned into Steve front bring her hands to the bump on her belly.
"You look beautiful" James said
"Thanks dad. Come in" Evelyn said.
"How are you sir?" Steve asked
"Son, we been over this call me dad. I'm good, excited to spend Christmas with my baby girl and my son."
Evelyn reached to take her father jacket. James smiled and kissed her cheek.
"We are glad you could make it. Come we give you the tour before, we have dinner." Steve said.
Later that night, Evelyn Steve and James were in the living room of the house. The only light was from the fireplace and the television which was playing White Christmas. Evelyn cuddled into Steve's chest with his arms protectively around her watching the movie every so often he leaned down and kissed her top of her head as she smiled up at him. James was in arm-chair not far from them. It was a tradition that he and Lillian had. It was nice to watch his baby girl and his son-in-law continue it. Evelyn hands reached for Steve' s hand and brought it to the small bump on her belly. He smiled down at her and kissed her nose. She giggled and turned back to the movie relaxed and just content to be in company of her husband and her father.
James was just as excite to watch his daughter grow with his grandchildren; that he never thought he would see. He wiped away a single tear as he wished that Lillian was there. The phone started to ring. Steve looked from James to Evelyn before getting up to answer the phone. Evelyn sat up and looked a little worried and looked up at Steve with wide eyes. He ran his hand down her jaw and kissed her forehead, before walking out of the room trying to tell her with his action that it will be alright. Her eyes traveled to James. He came over to sit next to her and let her start to take comfort in his arms as her worries started to grow.
"I'm sure it alright Eve"
Evelyn turned her eyes look up at her father. There was worry clear in her eyes James kissed the top of her head in fathering way.
"Thanks Dad"
James looked down to Evelyn; her hand was rest on the small bump on her stomach, were his grandchildren rested. He smiled as the memory of Lillian's pregnancy played in his mind as he brought his hand to the bump over top of her hands.
"So, how are my grandbabies?"
"They are fine; I can't stand the smell of peanut butter, bacon, and White Shoulders perfume."
"That is common, with your mom it was fishy smells like tuna and also cinnamon. I assuming we will not be having bacon tomorrow morning."
"It will be homemade orange rolls and maybe cinnamon rolls depending on how I feel and how much Steve let me do"
"Eve sweetheart he just wants what best for you and my grandbabies. You are under a lot of stress at the moment."
"I know Dad. But God help them if they are girls. I have feeling he be very protective of them more so than he is with me."
James looked down at her with small smile on his face. Evelyn was playing with his hand. The image of two little girls just like his Eve, when she was little, filled James's mind; he could not help but feel protective and worry about them.
"It is only naturally for him to feel that way. When your mother had you we were thinking you would be a boy but the moment the nurse came in with little pink blanket, my heart just melted. I want everything for you. I wanted to protect you and be there for you. At times it's easy to be overprotective dear. Eve, what I saw in war affect me. The need to protect you from that world and I didn't see half what Steve has seen and he knows what out there. So, he wants to protect what is the center of his universe; which is you and his children. Evelyn sweetie you can't blame him"
Evelyn looked up at James in thought. The images of what happen in New York flashed in her mind, Phil being stabbed by Loki and that was the tip of the iceberg what she saw; it was twice as worst for Steve with that compounded with what he saw in WWII. She nodded her head as it finally sunk in as James rubbed her shoulders. She gave him a little smile. He paused for a moment think about what she said.
"I got to ask, how did you learn about the white shoulders perfume?"
"When I was shopping for Steve present, Tasha and me stop at this jewelry stop. There was a saleswoman who had it on. I turned green and ran out of the shop and vomit my guts up into trash can."
James was trying hard not to laugh as he continued to rub her shoulders. She had sad look on her face but started to laugh when she noticed the look on his face.
"It's sad really I used to like that perfume" Evelyn said sadly.
"That sounds like what happened to your mother with cinnamon. She was making me oatmeal cookies and as soon as she got the cinnamon opened she turned green and ran to nearest bathroom room."
Evelyn and James exchange looks and started to laugh. Steve walked back into the living room with phone in his hand. He stopped at the door frame as he watch daughter and father exchange laughs. James looked over to Steve.
"Son?"
That caused Evelyn to look over to Steve.
"Steve"
Steve walked more into the room. He took her hand and brought it to his mouth kissing it softly.
"There is someone who wants to talk to you." Steve said
Evelyn gave him a look but took the phone anyway. She stood up and walked into the hallway.
"Hello" Evelyn said
"Hey dolly, Merry Christmas" Tony said.
Evelyn eyes filled up with tears as she heard Tony voice.
"Are you okay? Have you call Pepper? Where are you?"Evelyn asked in rapid fire.
"Whoa, whoa Dolly calm down. Pepper and I are fine in Miami. She is little worse for wear at the moment. But I can fix it. How are the twins?"
"They are fine"
"Great I can't wait to spoil them."
Evelyn gave him and tearful laugh.
"Dolly, are you crying?"
"Blame my hormones. Don't you ever scare me like that again! You hear me?"
"I'll try not to. I'll call you when we are back in New York. It should be very soon, like tomorrow evening."
"I can't wait to see you"
"You worry too much it's not good for the little superheroes."
"Tony"
"Merry Christmas and good night Dolly"
"Merry Christmas and Night, Tony"
They both hung up the phone. Tears were still running down her face. She walked back into the living room trying to remove the tears from her face. Steve and James were instantly at her side with concern on their face.
"I'm fine stupid hormones" Evelyn said.
They helped her to the sofa. Steve sat on side of her with his arm around her. James sat on the other side on her holding one of her hands. They stay like that until the movie was over. At that time James went to bed. Steve and Evelyn stay cuddle up on the sofa just watching the fire crackle in the room. The entire world was right at that moment.
