Chapter Nine: Famous Last Words
"I am never going to play your drinking games again you monster." Sasuke informed his pink haired teammate/lover. Sakura laughed. "You're the one that instigated this whole fiasco so don't blame me." She replied primly. "For you to have some fun! Not for you to attempt to do away with us under the guise of a game!" Sasuke protested. Naruto just laughed along with the pinkette. "Ne Sasuke do you think I could bring down the Akatsuki with my drinking game?" Sakura teased. Sasuke paled. "Don't even joke like that. It's something that you might actually accomplish!" He replied. The remaining two members of Team 7 laughed heartily at that statement.
Sakura groaned as she was called into the hospital on an emergency shift and Sasuke smirked. "That should teach you not to be such a monster." He said. Sakura rolled her eyes. "I'll remember that next time you come in injured." She replied curtly. Sasuke opened his mouth to protest but Sakura was already out the door and heading to the hospital. Naruto rolled his eyes. "You're an idiot sometimes. Brightest in our class Kyuubi's furry ass." He snorted as he headed into the kitchen to make something to eat.
"Is everyone against me this morning?!" Sasuke demanded as he followed the blond into the kitchen. Naruto shrugged. "You do this to yourself on occasion you know." He replied. Sasuke glared at his blond lover but Naruto ignored it with a studiousness that he rarely showed. "I hope her shift doesn't last too long." He mused aloud as he moved around the kitchen to make food.
When Sakura didn't show up for dinner, Naruto brushed it off. He knew how emergencies went sometimes. But when it was nearing two in the morning and still there was no Sakura, Naruto began to worry. He kicked the couch, waking Sasuke who had tried and failed to wait up for her. "What?" The Uchiha grunted. "Let's go to the hospital and see what's taking so long." Naruto ordered. Grumbling in a very Shikamaru-like manner under his breath, Sasuke got up obediently and the two shinobi headed out after their missing kunoichi.
"What do you mean we can't see her?! Sakura-chan has been here forever!" Naruto protested loudly. The nurse began to look around for some help but Naruto ignored that. "Is she here or not?" He demanded. "Um Haruno-sama is in surgery..." The nurse trailed off. "Since she got here?" Naruto asked calmly. Sasuke shook his head silently. "Baka nurse. You're making him angry." He informed the brunette woman. The nurse paled a little and shrugged helplessly. "Actually...I have no idea where she is." She confessed. Naruto's eyes narrowed. "Do you not comprehend how the PA system works? You can just page her. Tell her she has visitors at the front desk." He asked quietly.
Shizune arrived at the front desk where Sasuke and Naruto were terrorizing the nurse on duty. She sighed. "Sakura won't be answering that page unfortunately should she even hear it." She said. "Why not?! What's wrong with her?!" Naruto yelled angrily. Shizune rubbed the bridge of her nose and prayed to the gods for strength. "Obviously you don't know what emergency shift means. Sakura went straight into surgery as soon as she got here. That was several hours ago obviously. What do you think happened after using her chakra for so long without a chance to replenish it?" She snapped. "You let her pass out from chakra exhaustion?!" Naruto bellowed as his anger spiraled into rage. 'Oh how I wish I had learned Tsunade-sama's chakra punches.' Shizune mourned mentally. "No you idiot! I didn't let her do anything! Sakura pushed herself into unconsciousness healing her friends and comrades! Don't be so hypocritical Uzumaki! You would do the same thing were you on a mission and we both know it!" She yelled back just as angrily.
Naruto's mouth snapped shut because he couldn't deny her words. Shizune was right. Naruto would have done the same thing to make sure all his teammates came home alive. Just like Neji did. That was how they worked on missions. Both of them had near perfect mission survival rates because of their perceived-as-insane tactics to bring everyone home alive. "So when can she come home?" Sasuke asked calmly. Out of the two, the even-tempered Uchiha was much easier for Shizune to deal with. "As soon as she wakes up and can stand without falling over, she can go home." She replied. "Can we see her?" Sasuke asked. "I don't see why not." Shizune replied. She led the two down the hall to the resting room for medics. "Don't do or say anything stupid enough to provoke her into trying to hurt you if she's awake." Shizune said tiredly. "Give us some credit." Naruto sneered. Shizune ignored him.
"Here's her room." Shizune said as they paused outside of MR-23. "Thanks." Sasuke said as he elbowed Naruto before he could say anything rude or sarcastic. "No problem." Shizune replied. She left the two men and went back to work. "Behave dobe." Sasuke ordered as he opened the door and dragged the blond inside.
Sakura's hair had been the brightest thing in the room until Naruto and Sasuke stepped in. She was sleeping peacefully, her face devoid of the stress she had no doubt been under when she was awake. It was their chakra that woke her up. Despite being so exhausted she could barely see straight, Sakura always knew her boys' chakra which both annoyed and relieved them. "Hey." She croaked. Sasuke handed her the water waiting on the table next to her bed and the pinkette drank thankfully.
"So the emergency was pretty bad huh?" Sasuke asked. Sakura nodded dizzily. "Yeah. The wounded shinobi were like a river that never ended. It was all I could do to keep up with them by crunching soldier pills until my mouth felt like I had eaten an entire box of colored chalk. But that didn't work for long. About an hour after the last patient was stable, I crashed and I crashed hard. Luckily Shizune was there to help me out by dragging me here. I would have just slept in the blood on the floor." She replied tiredly.
