Missed Chances
Just watched the EW reunion and I have feels! I don't own anything.
"Mommy?" Sammy said sleepily as Joey came into the room to check on him, it took her a minute to register he might be awake.
"You should be sleeping mister." Joey said crawling into bed with him.
"You smell funny." The little boy said scrunching his nose. Ah, yes. The pasta incident. "Is Aunt Jen better?"
"Well, she's resting, in fact, she asked me if we could go visit her tomorrow, what do you think?" Sammy nodded.
"Mommy?"
"Is aunt Jen going to die?" Joey's heart sank. "Daddy said she's really sick."
Joey sat up on the bed and Sammy crawled into her arms. "Well, she is very sick, that's true but her doctors are working really hard to make sure that doesn't happen. See sweetie, there's something wrong with her heart and..."
"Like a broken heart?" How could Joey compete with that genius of a boy of hers. "Daddy said..."
"Of course he did." Joey kissed his forehead. "Listen baby, you know what we can do for aunt Jen? We can show her just how she means to us."
Joey heard her phone buzz on her pocket. It was a text from Pacey. "Stay here Sammy, I'll be right back."
"Pacey? What do you think you're doing? It's late." Joey came out of the house to find the father of her child standing on the lawn.
"Are we not going to talk about what happened back there?" Pacey told her. "I think we at least owe it to Sammy to have that conversation."
Joey sighed. "I think it's because of Sammy that I don't want to go back there Pace. I don't want him to get his hopes up."
"About mommy and daddy actually being capable of being friends?" Pacey inquired. "That's not the worst concept in the world."
"We can't just be friends Pacey, you know that. There's too much water under that bridge." Joey said. "Can we please talk later?"
Pacey walked ahead. "No, if what's happening to Jen should teach us something is that life's way too short Joe and I don't think talking later is going to change the situation so I'm just going to come and say it. I love you and you are the love of my life alright, whether you believe that or not is up to you."
"We can't get back together Pacey, we've done this dance before, more times than I can count and the last time almost costs us our lives and our child's..."
There it was. The cat was out of the bag, she'd come and say what was haunting over them for the last few years and the reason Joey had ran off to New York and not stayed at Capeside like she promised she would the last time they'd tried to give themselves a shot.
Pacey stopped cold. "More to my point Joey, that's what I'm talking about..."
"We're not going to."
"We have to..." Pacey insisted. He was almost in front of her. Joey took a step forward. "We almost died back then Joey, it isn't something that will be easy to forget, but somehow we're still here to tell the tale and to do something about it now..."
Joey had tears in her eyes. "Pacey, please." And so he kissed her. It was a slow kiss, a sweet one, the innocence of their early romance of those years ago, along with the setting made Joey feel nostalgic. "Pacey... I'm seeing Christopher."
Pacey broke the kiss but his eyes never left her own. "Right."
"Please don't make this harder Pace, we agreed this was for the best, us not being together. It was what was best for Sammy."
Pacey sighed. "Aren't we being too selfish with that? We're using Sammy as an excuse to tell ourselves that's what's best, but the truth is Joey, I don't think it is."
Joey's phone buzzed in her pocket again. It was Grams.
Pacey instantly understood something was wrong by the look on her face. "What? What is it?"
"It won't be long now." Grams said. Joey looked from the guys to Pacey who held Sammy in his arms, the little boy had his head resting in Pacey's shoulder. Everyone was trying to fight the tears. "If you are able to stay here, I'd ask you to."
"Of course." Dawson assured the woman. Jack stood there rocking Amy to sleep.
"Bessie is on her way to take you home Sammy, it's late." Joey said.
"I want to see aunt Jen!" Sammy said. Pacey kissed the little boy's forehead. "Please." Pacey glanced over at Grams. It was now or never.
"Come here, we'll see her for a minute and then you'll have to go with Bessie, alright?" Pacey said. Sammy smiled softly. Jack touched the little boy's head as Pacey carried him to Jen's room.
She seemed to be sleeping so Pacey stayed outside the room, with Sammy in his arms.
"Does it hurt daddy?" He asked. "To go to heaven?"
"No, it doesn't... In fact I think it's the opposite, I bet you feel much better once you're up there, if you've been sick like aunt Jen has." Pacey explained. He saw Jen open her eyes and notice them from the window. "You sure you want to go inside?" Sammy nodded.
"There he is." Jen said softly resting her head back on the bed. "My favorite little boy, come here." Sammy was now holding onto Pacey's hand as he walked closer to Jen's bed.
"Look at you." Jen said softly. "I'd been wanting to see you for a few days."
"Mommy said you were tired." Sammy said. "Are you better?" Jen glanced over at Pacey. "Will you go home soon with Jack and Amy?"
"No sweetie, I don't I will." Jen said. "I have to stay hooked up to all these machines." Sammy took a closer look at all the tubes. "But you know what? I'm so glad I don't have to go home because all my family is already here." Sammy smiled.
"Even me?"
"Of course you, are you kidding?" Jen touched his chin softly. "You, your mommy and your goofy dad.. you're all my family."
"And uncle Dawson?"
"Yes, him too." Jen smiled.
"Aunt Jen?"
"Yeah sweetie?"
"I love you." He smiled softly. Jen tried to keep her emotions at bay as she looked over at Pacey and now Joey who had joined him.
"I love you too, my sweet boy." She kissed his forehead. "Will you promise me something?"
Sammy nodded.
"Will you always be this sweet? I want you to always be this kind and to love always, can you do that?"
He nodded again. "And..." She whispered something to him.
"I will aunt Jen." Sammy smiled looking back at his parents. "I promise."
Joey felt as tears began to roll down her cheeks as Pacey's arms stopped her from shivering.
Aww man! I was emotional... please review!
