Chapter 8

Elsa took a deep breath, her eyes closed shut as she took miniature steps in the bridge that she now walked on.

On her right, Sterling's feet clattered along with her own, his mouth letting out almost a calming sound.

On her left, stood a reassuring Jack, his hand placed gently on her shoulder as he mumbled encouraging words into her ear.

For a moment, Elsa felt at ease and was ready to learn about the humans her father had taught her so much to despised, yet a part of her was still extremely terrified and rather skeptical about the whole thing.

Her hands trembled slightly, this time she managed to open her eyes but only gaze down at the ground instead of the village.

She thought she was ready, maybe she was, but she didn't feel so.

Everything was happening so fast, she just needed catch her breath.

''Ready to go in?'' she heard Jack's soft voice spoke, as she managed to stare up from the ground and into his icy, blue eyes.

Elsa let out a stiff chuckle, her hand running through a strand of her platinum, blond hair. ''I thought I was, but I'm so sure anymore''

Jack nodded his head, understandingly, one hand dropping into his sweater's pocket and the other holding firmly onto his staff.

They stood there in silence, Elsa stunned for a minute that he hadn't forced or said anything about it.

Surely Jack Frost was not one to keep his mouth shut, but when her head turned back to stare at him, his face no longer showed the immature boy she had met only the day before; something had changed in him and she couldn't say she wasn't fond of it.

She heard him clear his throat, light air blowing through his white hair as his finger lifted and pointed humble, wooden building only yards away.

''You see that there?'' he asked, receiving a nodding head. "That's the village's bakery. The owners, the Bakers, make the best pastries throughout the entire land. People come from all over just to get a taste of their new creations''

Elsa's eyebrows rose in surprise, her eyes narrowing between Jack and the small place that seemed to very run down and close to tumbling. ''Really? Are they that good?''

Jack smirked. ''the best! Every time I come through here, I always make sure to take some for the trip. Spirit or not, no one can resist those pastries. Maybe we'll get a chance to taste some''

Elsa nodded, licking her lower lip at the thought of what stood in the other side of the doors.

Her father was very strict about what they ate; Pitch made sure that Elsa ate only fruit and vegetables and the closest thing she ever achieved to freedom were some cookies and chocolate her father would bring her every few years.

She would often question his choice in food, but he would simply replied with ''No such food will get you strong as the one you're eating at this moment''.

Elsa always guessed it made sense, yet at times she would dream of the food she was being denied. She couldn't help but feel silly at the urge of wanting to burst through the doors.

Jack's eyes landed on different merchants, who all had their stands spread from one another, trying to persuade the walking villagers with divergent objects.

''And those people over there,'' he pointed to them, pulling Elsa closer to him so that she could get a better view. ''They make their money by selling weird stuff. Some sell food, some sell clocks, and some sell their inventions. They're very competitive people, but outside their business, they're very nice''

She smiled, watching from a distance as a woman pulled a flower out from her basket and bend down to hand it to a small girl who shrieked in excitement. She was surprised how much they also resembled Jack and herself.

''Have you ever acquired anything from them?''

''Those were the big words I was missing,'' he teased, but his lips suddenly turned into a sad smile. ''No, not technically at least. Humans can't see me''

Elsa's curiosity was over taken by the unexpected feeling of surprise that awoke from her at hearing those words. The way he spoke about humans, she was sure that he had be friended them and was easily associated with their kind. The statement just wasn't something she had expected coming from him.

''What? Why not?'' she asked, a tad too inpatient.

Jack didn't notice and only shrugged his shoulders, his hands twirling his staff in between his fingers. ''In order to see a spirit, you have to believe in them. Jack Frost is just a myth to everyone, and that's why I'm invisible to them.''

Elsa frowned. ''Well, then how come I can see you?''

''Spirits can see other spirits, I guess'' He directed a small grin at her. ''Anyway, I've taken some things, but without them knowing for obvious reasons.''

Elsa giggled, relieved that she no longer had to see him so saddened, and crossed her arms across her chest. ''You are aware that that's stealing, right?''

''stealing, shmealing'' Jack's eyes finally landed on the huge castle once again, his hand pulling Elsa's along with his as he took small steps forward. He then spoke with an unrealistic, English accent. ''and that, Els, is where King Thomas and Queen Primrose live-''

''Els, really?''

''I believe I was in the middle of educating you with historic information before you rudely interrupted''

Elsa laughed, hearing his attempt of using bigger words and only placed her hands up in defeat. ''My sincere apologies, please continue''

Jack smirked in triumph before returning to face the amazing building with his English accent in the tip of his tongue. ''As I was saying, it is also home to the lost princess, Princess Rapunzel and her three year husband, Eugene-''

''Lost princess?'' Elsa questioned, covering her mouth with her hand soon after. ''I mean… continue''

Jack smiled widely seeing Elsa so curious about what she had been so afraid of only minutes ago, and he was glad that his attempt of making her soften up had worked.

He knew she was nervous and just plain scared, so he thought what better way to make her loosen up than by talking to her about the village.

Jack didn't want her to enter the village expecting the worst; he wanted her to enter for herself, because she wanted to learn about them, not because he was making her.

He found it adorable at the sight of seeing Elsa covering her mouth with her hand.

''I don't really know a lot of details, but I heard princess Rapunzel discussing it with other royal people so I'll tell you what she said.

When queen Primrose was pregnant with Rapunzel, she became sick and the nurses didn't think she'd make it. The king was torn and was willing to do anything to save his wife, and that's when someone mentioned a magic flower that could heal anyone who grabbed ahold of it.

King Thomas scattered his men and made them all look for the flower, until one finally did. They gave it to Queen Primrose, and she was able to live along with her baby''

Elsa smiled slightly at that.

''But it turns out this witch named Gothel had used the flower for years to remain young and when she found out that the king had taken it, she was furious.

She found out the flower had been planted in Rapunzel at birth, explaining her golden hair, so she figured she'd cut her hair off so that she could use it to remain young. It didn't work, and that led her to kidnap Rapunzel''

Elsa had to stop herself from gasping. She couldn't imagine being taken from her father even if they did have their differences.

''Gothel raised her, well actually used her for her hair, until the point of Rapunzel's eighteen birthday when Rapunzel asked if she could leave the tower Gothel had kept her locked in since her kidnapping.

Gothel denied it and left to buy her some paint, because Rapunzel loves to paint, and well then out of the random this guy climbed into her window and she knocked him out with a frying pan''

Elsa snorted, gently patting Sterling's fur. ''I'm sorry what? A frying pan?''

''you ask a lot of questions''

''funny, I recall myself telling you the exact same thing when we first met''

Jack rolled his eyes. ''want me to continue the story or not?''

She nodded her head, eagerly.

''Rapunzel ended up tying him in a chair and threatening him, until somehow they both managed to leave the tower. Rapunzel was feeling mix emotions about the whole thing, but they ended up going on a few adventures and whatever. Bottom point is that Gothel's gone, the guy and Rapunzel got married and the king and queen got their daughter back''

Elsa huffed, leaning faintly on Sterling. ''You're not a very good story teller, you know''

Jack glared at her playfully. ''Excuse me for not being very entertaining, princess''

''No excuses,'' she replied, taking small steps near the village once again. ''Come on, Frost, you got me interested in this place.''

His face lid up. ''Really?''

''Yeah,'' she timidly turned her head down. ''You're right about having to form my own opinion about humans. I shouldn't depend so much on my father's opinion''

''That's the spirit!'' he grabbed ahold of her hand and rapidly began dragging her into the village within seconds. He turned to the horse that still stood neutrally by the bridge. ''Come on, Sterly, before I end up stealing your girl right here''

Elsa watched with amusement as a regretful Jack ran from an infuriated Sterling for a while as he tried flying in the air with his staff, in attempt to escape from Sterling's wrath.

After fighting the urge to fill the entire situation with laughter, Elsa managed to finally settle Sterling down and smack a laughing Jack on the back of his head.

''ow!'' he cried out, still laughing. ''what was that for?''

''for making my Sterling mad!'' she snapped, snuggling with the horse.

Jack leaned on his staff while huffing. ''You're taking a horse's side over mine?''

''Jealous are we, Frost?'' provoked Elsa, grabbing ahold of Sterling's reins and pulling him towards the village.

''You'd like that, wouldn't you, princess?'' Jack grinned ''But really? Of a horse?''

Elsa shrugged. ''You never fail to surprise me, now are you coming or not?''

''wouldn't miss it,'' he reassured, settling next to Jack.

''Are you ready now?'' he asked, to make sure.

He couldn't deny the feeling that spread through his stomach as he witness her once unassured eyes turned to stare right at him with the certainty that he never thought he'd see in her.

''Very,'' she stated, with the confidence she wore proudly from the moment he had met her.

Except it was diverse now, because she wasn't the snobby, cold hearted princess he had met the day before; she had changed for the better.

Yes, it had only been a day since he had met her, yet they had seen each other at their worst by that point. Not only had Jack noticed Elsa's adjustment in her attitude, but he had also seen her as a real person (spirit, whatever) who had gone through what most didn't.

Elsa could be icy and insensitive, but she could also be caring and considerate.

She could be stubborn, but she could also be understanding.

She could be the most serious person known to mankind, but she could be the source of never ending laughter.

Elsa could be the biggest pain there was, yet she could also be what most look forward to each day.

She had built up walls and Jack was beyond prepared to help dissolve them.

He was willing to do the impossible to see who the real Elsa was, not who her father had brought her up to be.

Maybe it was the purpose he had to achieve when he met her; Manny wanted him to change her life.

One thing was for sure; Jack had established that he wouldn't give up on her, no matter the circumstances.

Because he didn't believe evil exist, not even in Pitch Black; he believed that there was at least a small amount of hope in those who many feared there was no hope left for.

So as he watched Elsa's lips turn up into a small smile, he had no doubt that she would be worth the effort.

''Come on, let's go''
