POV: Kate
It was now Thursday night and I was at home, as was my mom and Amy, my cousin who was supposed to 'baby sit' me, although I didn't need it. She was 19. All she ever did was laugh, drink and smoke. I had gotten fairly used to the smell of smoke around our house. Amy was very tall with dark hair but she just wasted her life doing nothing. She could've been a model. She did all the things my mom did; laughed, drank and smoked. I didn't even know what my mom's job was. My mom was not fit to be a mother. Neither was my father. But, unlike my father my mother didn't sexually abuse me every chance she got, as odd as that sounds. No she basically ignored me.
My father now lived in Mexico with his wife and their kids. But he still came back whenever he could. I hated him.
I was so glad the day was over, as it had been a long one. I had had cheerleading right after school and then ballet right after that. Then I worked at the library for an hour or so and then my job at the coffee shop. It was now 9 at night.
"Kate," my mom called from downstairs.
"What," I whispered.
"Could you come help me with dinner?"
Most of the time my mom left dinner up to me.
I came downstairs and into the large kitchen. My mom was standing at the stove.
"Now Kate you can toss the salad while I prepare the chicken," she told me.
I thought of that argument between Lisa and Daisy in Girl, Interrupted regarding the live-in chicken vs. live-in kitchen.
I went to toss the salad though I knew I wouldn't be eating any. I didn't want to eat around my mother who basically ignored me. Maybe Lizzie and I would get together at a coffee shop somewhere later. My mom didn't even bother to call Amy down for dinner; she wouldn't've come anyway. Neither did I since I knew this. As I watched my mom cook I noticed 2 scars on her wrist. I didn't know why.
After I was done tossing the salad I went back upstairs to my room.
Lizzie and I have been best friends since our last year of middle school. Lizzie and Miranda used to be friends but then Miranda became friends with Claire, who used to be my friend. So Lizzie and I became friends.
