Chapter 9 – Guns and ammo
Molly followed Sherlock around on the rail road track while he was searching for more clues. While his flashlight swooped over the ground, Molly secretly looked for own clues and at the same time she tried to look for someone who could be watching them. It was just a matter of time before they would find out what kind of trap was laid out for them.
Suddenly they heard a gunshot and Molly found herself on the ground, underneath Sherlock who had thrown himself over her to protect her. Another shot was fired at them and this time it hit the ground right above Molly's head.
"NOW will you give me the gun?" He asked, looking down on her while still lying on top of her.
"You're just like a little boy who wants a toy he can't have, aren't you?" She said, giving him a determined look that indicated that she wasn't happy with the situation.
"Molly, this is not the time to argue!"
A third shot came at them and in the nick of time Sherlock managed to roll them aside, get up on his feet and pull Molly up on her feet as well. When the fourth shot came at them they ran to take cover behind some junk lying around by the tracks.
"The gun, Molly!"
By old habit she had already taken the gun out and realized that she was about to shoot back at whoever was shooting at them. But luckily Sherlock hadn't noticed. She thought he hadn't noticed anyway.
"Stay here." He said and made himself ready to run out from their hiding place.
"Where are you going?"
"I'm going to take a look at who's shooting at us."
"You can't just leave me here without protection. What if they find me? I won't be able to protect myself if you leave and take the gun with you!"
"I can't leave without the gun."
"Well, then I'm going with you."
The truth was that Molly wanted to know, as eagerly as Sherlock, who was shooting at them. It could be the answer to the problem she had been having the past two days. The problem of who was digging up her past before her eyes for the whole world to see.
"This is not the time to argue, Molly. Now stay here!"
But it didn't seem that Sherlock was going anywhere either, because as soon as he looked out from their hiding place shots came at him and Molly pulled him away from the bullets. As hard as it was to admit, Molly thought that they needed to run away from there. They didn't have enough fire power to take this on. If she remembered correctly she only had four bullets left in that gun and she hadn't bothered to get more after she had settled in as boring Molly Hooper ten years earlier.
"I think we should leave now. I don't want a bullet in my head." She said and pulled at his coat.
Sherlock knew she was right. He had already checked the gun of how many bullets it had and he didn't like the odds. If he was right, there was at least three persons shooting at them and if he didn't figure out where they were standing the four bullets wouldn't help much, even if he was a great marksman.
He put the gun in his pant lining, took Molly's hand and ran away from the bullets in a zig-zag motion to avoid getting hit.
It felt like they ran for forever before they slowed down and walked. Molly was in a daze.
She would have been dead by now if she would have gone to the rail road track by herself. What was she thinking going there by herself with a gun that only had four bullets? She used to be smarter than that. These past ten years had slowed her down, made her weak. Maybe she was better off dead? If Sherlock hadn't been there, she would probably have been killed by that first bullet that was fired at them. Had she forgotten all about her training these past ten years?
Suddenly she found herself outside Sherlock's home on Baker Street. Sherlock led her in to the building, up the stairs and in to his flat, where John sat in his chair reading the evening paper.
As they came in, he looked up and gave them a concerned look.
"What happened to you?" He asked, as he put the paper down.
"Oh, nothing, we just got shot at." Sherlock answered, a little frustrated.
"Shot at? By whom? And should we prepare for more shots" John asked with concern in his voice.
"No, no, they lost us somewhere down the industrial rail road track." Sherlock answered. "They won't be coming around here."
John noticed the gun sticking out of Sherlock's pants and looked a bit puzzled.
"Sherlock, why do you have a gun in your pants?"
"It's not mine." Sherlock answered and started pacing back and forth as usual when he needed to think.
"Well, that clears it up." John said sarcastically.
"It's mine." Molly said.
"That clears it up even more." Said John. "Why do you own a gun?"
"For protection." Molly answered.
"Protection?...What is going on here?" John was getting irritated. He wanted answers and no one was giving him any.
"Molly was being stupid and decided to go down to the industrial rail road track where the two bodies were found. Somebody left a note at her doorstep to lure her there."
"Molly! You could've been killed!" John exclaimed.
"I had my gun with me." Molly answered.
"What's gotten in to you? You're not yourself!" Said Sherlock angrily. "She's not herself, John!"
"Calm down, Sherlock. I'm sure you're just over-reacting." Said John.
"I never over-react. She was being unreasonable when I told her to stay home and let me go and have a look. And she wouldn't give me the gun until the very last minute."
"It doesn't matter now, does it?!" Molly had raised her voice, which was so unlike her. "We got shot at and we don't know who was shooting at us. If I wouldn't have convinced you to run away from there we would be dead! Now give me my gun back so I can go home. I'm exhausted!"
Sherlock stared at her for a bit, took a deep irritated breath and stepped towards her. His full body length was almost hunched over her when he gave her a determined and angry look.
"You're staying here. And I am keeping the gun."
That was chapter 9 for you all. Hope you enjoyed it. Please leave comments if you have any. Now I'm going to figure out what will happen in the next chapter. Any ideas?
