Chapter 8
"Oh, what a melancholy choice this is,
Wanting home, wanting him."
~ "Far From the Home I Love", Fiddler on the Roof
The fickleness of the mind was something that still amazed Alfred. The whole thing felt as if his mind was playing a trick on him.
He felt like he had known Kiku, Francis, Mathew, and Arthur before he had met them. It was something pulling in the back of the mind begging to be discovered.
Now, he was sitting in hotel room passing time. Jensen had left the room to make arrangements for her trip to Paris. She had insisted on doing it alone and to allow him to make plans for the next week.
He lay in his bed tossing up and down a rubber ball.
There was nothing for him to do. He'd finished his all his pictures and edits he had promised Jensen. And, he didn't feel like making plans.
He had turned off his phone to avoid calling or texting any of his new contacts. It was tempting thought to call Kiku or text Mathew. It was an irrational desire to speak with them. They were barely even friends, nothing more the acquaintances, really.
But in his back pocket, he could feel his phone vibrate. It could be Jensen asking about his "plans". Or it could be someone else entirely.
But whoever was texting or calling him, it didn't matter. It didn't change the fact that he wasn't going to answer.
And despite his pure intentions of ignoring all phone calls, he pulled out his phone and opened Pandora.
It was set on to a Broadway station he had unofficial dubbed as his "Guilty Pleasure" Station. Though he would never admit it, he had a soft spot for Broadway.
He set his phone on the nightstand and sat up. He was wasting time and he knew it. He should have acted on his feelings.
'Don't be an idiot,' he told himself. 'They're probably busy with… diplomatic stuff.'
He peered at his phone sitting on the nightstand still blasting music. It was basically asking to be picked up.
His hand steered down towards the phone and picked it up.
'No don't do it man!'
He turned off Pandora and opened iMessage. His figure hovered over the start a new conversation button.
'Turn back! Turn back!'
He squeezed his eyes shut and pressed the button.
No going back now.

Hungary walked or rather skipped down the corridor to Alfred Jones' room.
She felt just an overwhelming sense of excitement at the idea of seeing Alfred for the first time, one on one. She had managed to find out where he was staying thanks to Kiku, who seemed quite excited to spend more time with the American.
'11a, 11b, 11c, 11d. Here!'
She slowed as she approached Alfred's door.
She took a deep breath and stood outside the door. That seed of doubt was speaking to her again, whispering the words of uncertainty.
'Turn back, Eliza,' the voice whispered. 'While you still can.'
She pursed her lips and quickly rapped on the door causing a harsh sound to come from the mahogany wooden door.
No going back now.
