Chapter 6: Victory at all Costs
Viernes witnesses a device being tossed into the room. Hope teleports with the device, intending to protect Viernes and the hospital. It seems that a revolution has begun considering the recent events.
Viernes' POV
*Viernes is shocked by Hope's actions. He struggles to look for her.*
"GET OUT OF MY WAY!" I shouted, running to the door.
*BOOM* A loud explosion was heard from above us. The hospital shook, the lights flickered, and things fell off the shelves. The staff then began to scatter to ensure the safety of the patients and fellow staff.
"Everyone, remain calm! We will begin transporting patients! Prioritize the sickly and injured!" Yelled Nurse Joy.
I started sweating profusely. Was that the device that Hope teleported with?! WHERE THE HELL IS SHE?!
"Viernes! Where are you going? You must remain here!" Professor Rowan called out to me.
"Professor, I need to find my Ralts! She was holding the explosive that just went off!"
I ran off, not looking behind me. Through the doors, I ran out into a brightly lit hallway; kind of like the kind you would see from a Resident Evil movie. Except, everyone was still alive and moving through the halls.
I realized that I had forgotten my bag, my team, and my clothes. I didn't care at that point. I just wanted to make sure Hope was okay.
I couldn't find the goddamned exit. This place was a labyrinth. I just kept sprinting and sprinting along. I was losing all hope. I stopped at a corner, trying to catch my breathe. I looked up.
I saw the fucking elevator.
I smashed the hell out of the call button. It wasn't running. No good. I looked to the left and right of it, and luckily found the emergency exit. I swung it open and ran up the stairs as fast as I could. I didn't know where I was running, but somehow I felt like I was going in the right direction. The stairs spiraled almost endlessly. I began to slow down. My patient gown was wet from my sweat, and I didn't have to go to the bathroom anymore.
*Pop pop pop* gunfire.
I looked up. I can hear it now. We're being attacked.
I ran faster and faster up the staircase. Eventually, I could hear shouting. I must be near the exit. When I got to the top, a light shone through the window of the door. I hugged the wall adjacent to the door. I tried to conceal my heavy panting, but it took more energy to do so than actually panting.
As I relaxed, I could once again feel the hostile presence. It was very intense. I must be right next to the source. My lungs were so irritated from the panting, that I couldn't resist the urge to cough.
I coughed.
Suddenly, shots were flying through the metal door. Shots ricocheted and plinked in the stairwell. The concrete around me chipped away as each shot landed. Debris, dust, and fragments were flying everywhere. I huddled as much as I could, covering my ears, and closing my eyes. I was scared.
I can't believe I wanted to become a Hoenn Army Ranger. This is what they go through on a daily basis, I'm told. This is fucking scary.
My thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a megaphone adjusting.
"If you know what's good for the Ralts, you fuckers better come out now."
I-I couldn't help myself. I stood up, and squeezed my fists. I wiped the sweat off my face. I was grinding my teeth. My fearful eyes turned into hateful eyes. I walked up the stairs, and opened the door.
Bright lights were on me. I shielded my eyes. I let the door slam shut behind me. The sound echoed through the area. We were in a cavern, perhaps?
Surprisingly, there wasn't much noise from the opposing force. A silent standoff. Masked people were aiming their weapons at me.
I raised my left foot. Then landed it. I did the same for the right foot, and repeated the process...
*Pat pat* the sound of my bare feet hitting the stone cold ground echoed ominously.
"HANDS UP, ASSHOLE!" One of the hostiles shouted at me.
I reluctantly obliged.
I couldn't help but realize the vibe the majority of these people were giving off. I sensed more fear than hostility now. It's as if the hostile entity's 'emotional range' surpassed all of these douchebags. Which can only mean one thing. A bigger douchebag is in charge.
"Are you, or are you not, one of these monsters?!" Someone asked me.
I was sweating bullets, my heart was racing, and the only thing I could think of was trying to cut the tension.
"Uh... I-if you check under my gown, I-I think you'll find a monster." I replied.
What the hell was that? Do I have a death wish or something?
My eyes suddenly widened. There she was. Hope had a pistol held to her little head. Tears rolled down her face. She was scared for her life.
"YOU THINK THAT'S FUNNY?!" One of the men approached me from the crowd, weapon aimed right at me.
"No, it was an accident."
"Well, I'll tell you this..." He closed in on me. He aimed the barrel of his rifle at my face, and whispered; "... Your birth was an accident. Wrong place, wrong time."
"Ralts! Ralts!" Hope called out to me.
What happened next would soon change my life forever.
Hope's POV
No time to waste! I must protect him and all of our friends.
For the first time in my life, I teleported without even realizing it. I envisioned where I WANTED to be. I knew what I NEEDED to do. I BELIEVED that I was indeed at my destination.
I was there. Right next to the object. I could feel that Viernes knew it was dangerous.
I grabbed the object, and teleported to the entrance of the complex. I dropped it, and instinctively teleported. My insufficient skill left me not too far from the explosion, but right into the hands of the people we sensed earlier.
They grabbed me, and pointed one of those human ranged weapons at me. I didn't even bother moving. I've seen what those things have done to living things; Humans and Pokémon alike.
They held me by the arm, and made me wait for what seemed like an eternity. I felt Viernes' presence, and I knew he was going to save me.
Of course, that was when we heard him cough behind the door at the end of the tunnel.
The humans holding me fired their weapons at the door, and little tiny metal cylinders fell from the weapons with each burst. Each shot that landed made my heart drop more and more. He couldn't get hurt. I just couldn't bare it! I cried, and shouted.
"Stop it! Please, stop it! He didn't do anything to you! PLEASE, L-LEAVE HIM ALONE!"
They kept shooting.
Eventually, I saw box-like objects dropping from their weapons. They stopped firing for a moment, placing new box-like objects into their weapons. They called for him to reveal himself.
He slammed the door open, and everyone raised their weapons. He approached. I gasped and panted from my crying. I was glad he was unscathed. That crazy man.
While he conversed with the aggressors, I could only focus on the intimidating force I felt upon us. Everyone else around me was scared to be there, but there was bigger hostile presence around. As it got closer and closer, I couldn't help but think that maybe it was the same human that attacked my family.
I tried to warn Viernes.
"Leave now!" I shouted.
The man restraining me hit me and kicked me in the chest. I fell to the floor.
"SHUT THE HELL UP, YOU'LL GET US ALL KILLED!" He shouted.
I could sense intense fear coming from him.
I gasped for air. At the same time, I looked up at Viernes, and I sensed aggression coming from him. It was more than aggression.
It was rage.
Viernes' POV
Hope fell to the ground, gasping.
No. No! NO!
I SNAPPED.
"NOOOOOO!" I shouted at the top of my lungs.
All I could hear was my heartbeat.
I charged the cock-sucker in front of me. He immediately fired.
One. Two. Three.
Each shot flying in my general direction. Slow-motion. I could see them flying through the air. I could follow them! With a single bob of the head, I dodged all of them.
Agility.
I closed the distance between the man and myself. The barrel of his rifle was over my shoulder. This chump was a goner. Good thing I took boxing. I nailed him in the throat. Shattered windpipe.
He fell like a sack of bricks. As he hit the floor, time seemed to have sped up for me again.
All of the enemy forces gasped. They raised their weapons at me, hundreds of safety mechanisms went off. A storm of lead approached me.
Without even thinking, I raised my arms, palms out.
A red wall of light formed out of thin air, reducing all of the incoming fire to dust.
Light Screen.
My emotions were like a physical force. Kinetic motion. The momentum was too much, I couldn't stop. I began to lose control.
The defensive wall became more transparent.
"FUCK YOU!" I screamed.
The wall generated shapes of concentrated light, neon red stars, that flew toward the line of enemies.
Swift.
*Boom boom boom boom boom* Each star generated shock waves as they made contact with anything unfortunate enough to be in the way. Dust and debris filled the area.
My barrier suddenly cracked, and broke. So did my heart.
I realized that I lost control, and I had completely forgotten Hope was in that mess. With no hesitation, I ran into the clouds of dust calling out for her.
"Hope!... Hope!... Hope!"
I heard the pitter patter of tiny feet approaching me.
"Ralts!...R-R-Raaalts!" Hope ran into view, hugging me by the legs.
She was crying and coughing, but she was okay. I'm glad she was okay. However, we still needed to get out of there.
"Come on, Hope! We have to get the hell out of here! Let's –" In just fractions of a second, I turned around and generated a barrier.
Too bad, so sad. So close, but no cigar.
I didn't think it was going to end this way. My barrier wasn't generated fast enough. It began to crumble away, starting from the hole which the bullet passed through.
I heard the whizzing of a small object flying by. I felt a thud on the right side of my chest. There was a dull pain with a slight sensation of burning pain. I grabbed the right side of my chest with my left hand and squeezed. I fell to my right knee. I raised my palm and looked at it. It was covered in red liquid. Crimson red liquid. Me.
I wheezed, and coughed. I tasted some coming from the back of my throat. I fell onto my hands, supporting myself with the last of my strength. I coughed blood onto the ground. I fell to the ground, but leaned onto the side which received the wound. I was feeling light headed, nauseous, and my vision was blurring.
I tried to gasp for more air, but each breath generated more pain in my chest. Each breath practically escaped through the hole in my chest, bubbling the blood as it escaped my body. I did the only thing I could think of. I took my left index finger... and plugged up my wound.
Pain surged through my chest, and I coughed up more blood. I was able to breathe more easily, but it still sucked.
I heard a stampede of boots approaching. I was so out of it, I was no longer able to feel any sort of presence. The worst part is that I couldn't do anything about it. I was lying there, wheezing, and dying. I started to cry.
I began to say my last words.
"Mom, I wish you hadn't passed so soon; but I'm coming to see you now. Dad, I know you didn't mean to walk out on us, but you could have handled it differently. Hope... I –"
She was standing over me, crying. She put her little hand on my cheek and wiped my tears away.
I quickly forgot which Hope I was actually thinking about. Anyhow, I lifted my right hand. It was trembling. I caressed Hope's face. My blood trailed my fingers, blemishing her face. I began to relax, and pass out. Or pass away. Hope's eyes were dilated. Her face was red. Tears streamed down her face.
Those purple eyes, that little crimson red horn, and that tiny stature. This is a dangerous situation for her.
"H-Hope, get out... *wheeze* ... o-o-of here."
Hope looked at me with the blankest stare in her eyes.
"R-Ra-Ralts." She mumbled.
The enemy was getting closer. Instead of running the other way, Hope got up and faced the direction of the enemy.
The dust settled, and a new wave of enemies had already taken their positions. They had their weapons aimed at Hope and I.
She stood there, with her head down. She began glowing. No... She was shimmering with light.
Everyone had started to fire at her, but all of the shots were repelled by a barrier!
She was engulfed in the shimmering light. Next, the area was just filled with that same blinding light.
In my final moments, I could only think of one last thing.
Another blinding light...
... will be the last thing I see.
