Chapter 9

The first thing he used to look at when I walked into anywhere, was my boobs. He doesn't look anymore," – Callie Torres

Arizona had already suspected that she would end up getting paired with Calliope in their math project because that was just how are luck worked. She hadn't wanted to be paired with her but now that she had been, maybe it was because destiny had written that they were supposed to be friends? She didn't really believe in fate or destiny, but Arizona was willing to give Callie a second chance, if only for her grade.

The bell rang and Arizona was the first out of the door. Okay, so, she was half-willing to give Callie another chance, and half-willing to see if Callie would actually apologise to her for being so flaky and leaving her alone in the library for no reason.

But now it was lunch period and Arizona spotted Callie walking towards her. "Karev, move in front of me," Arizona begged.

"What?" Alex asked.

Arizona sighed dramatically and shook her head. "Useless. Move away before I find a brick," she warned. Alex looked at her like she was crazy and continued to shovel his sandwich into his mouth. "Calliope," Arizona greeted with faux-sweetness.

"Hey," Callie said. "Can I talk to you?"

"Sure."

"In private?" Callie replied. Arizona glanced around at Alex, Jo, Meredith and Cristina, who did not seem to want to move or tell Callie to go away. So, she stood up. "Thank you. It's just about the math project," Callie said as the pair of them walked out of the cafeteria. Arizona stopped walking. "What?" Callie laughed.

"Really?" Arizona snapped. "The math assignment? That's all you want to talk about?" Callie shrugged. Arizona rolled her eyes. "Unbelievable," she muttered. "You are unbelievable, Calliope."

"Mark Sloan and I used to be... you know," Callie replied. Arizona raised an eyebrow at her in disbelief and confusion.

"No. I don't know."

"...Sex buddies?" she muttered. Arizona looked disgusted at this piece of information – why was Callie telling her that? She did not care at all about Callie's sex life. Well, she did, but only if it involved her, and not Mark Sloan, who Arizona believed to be a jerk and an asshat. Even though Callie had upset her, Arizona was still surprised by the friendship she had with Sloan, because she seemed like a decent person, something Sloan didn't seem to be at all. Callie sighed. "I thought... I was pregnant."

"Why are you telling me this?" Arizona asked.

"Because I thought I was pregnant but I told Mark that I had a stomach bug and I asked him to let you know I wouldn't be in. I didn't have it in me to text you because I was embarrassed and scared that I was a 17-year-old with Mark Sloan's baby inside of me," Callie rambled.

Arizona made a face at the phrase. "Are you? Pregnant with a Little Sloan?"

"Oh, god. No. Thank the lord," Callie replied. "But I really thought I was which was why it took me a while to reply to your text."

Sighing, Arizona wasn't sure what to do. "I was sitting by myself in the library. Like a loser."

"Hey. I always sit in the library by myself," Callie said. Arizona smiled, not being able to help feel sorry for her.

"Well, maybe we can sit in the library together from now on?" she suggested with a little smile. Callie smiled back.

"You accept my apology?" she asked.

"You didn't actually apologise," Arizona teased. "But yes. I accept your apology. Sloan is an asshat, which I already knew, so I don't find it hard to believe that he refused to tell me where you were. For whatever reason his tiny little brain thought of."

"Oh, I'm pretty sure his tiny little brain was jealous," Callie laughed.

"Of what?"

"Of you. Because Mark and I have been friends since freshman year – I don't have many friends, I don't really like people – but you noticed me, like Mark did back when we were younger, and he was jealous that I noticed you back," Callie couldn't help but admit to the fact that she had been noticing Arizona. She just hoped Arizona wouldn't realise the reason why Callie had noticed her was because she was in love with her.

"Hmm," Arizona smiled; pleased that Callie had noticed her back. She made herself shake away the thoughts about Callie's lips and instead said: "Well, you should tell him and his tiny little brain that if he ever does that again, I will hit him. With a brick."

Callie laughed in relief. "I will do that."

"Calliope," Arizona said. "I think this means we're friends now. And I think it means we will rock this math assignment."

"Oh, we will make this math assignment our bitch," Callie agreed.

"I like the sound of that," Arizona smiled. Callie couldn't help but stare at Arizona as she did so. She had a perfect smile, the sort of smile that could light up any room. Her eyes sparkled at the same time. "I'll see you in math tomorrow and we can meet up at lunch and start planning."

"Okay. Good idea," she replied.

"Bye Calliope."

"Bye Robbins," although neither girl noticed, both were grinning from ear to ear as the pair of them walked away in separate directions. They were just excited to be spending more time together.

...

Lexie Grey ambushed Callie in the corridor after school and interrupted her thoughts about seeing Arizona in math tomorrow. "Callie," she started.

"Lexie. Hey," Callie replied.

"You were sitting with Mark at lunch again," Lexie said. Callie nodded. "Do you... do you still like him?"

"Yeah obviously, we're best friends," Callie said.

"No. I mean, like him. Like you still want to get into his pants," Lexie asked.

"Uh. No. Not at all. I don't want to go anywhere near his pants, thank you," Callie replied. Lexie didn't seem to believe her. "Is this about the pregnant thing?"

"Meredith told me everything."

"Look, I didn't want to be pregnant with his kid... but I thought I might be. And I'm not," Callie added the last sentence cheerfully. "So, me and Mark? We're completely in the past – well, our pants are... no. You know what I mean. We're just best friends now."

"Okay..." Lexie muttered. "So, you don't like him. But Mark... Mark thinks with his penis and..."

"Woah. I'm going to stop you right there," Callie interrupted. She sighed. "Mark doesn't look at me like that anymore. The first thing he used to look at when I walked into anywhere was my boobs. He doesn't look anymore. And, just... so you know," Callie added. "Mark was the one who broke... us, off. I mean, I wanted to anyway. It was a mutual thing and it was only ever about the sex, but Mark broke us off because he started noticing you. And your boobs. Not just your boobs. The whole of you. But, you know what I mean."

"Yeah. I know... know what you mean," Lexie smiled. "Thanks, Callie."

"Calliope!" Callie's heart started to thump at the sound of Arizona's voice but instead of ignoring her like she would have done a week ago, she turned to where her voice was coming from. "I'm glad I caught up with you before you left."

"Hi," Callie said.

"Listen, I know we're going to meet up tomorrow but I was wondering if you wanted to come over. Tonight. To mine. For math," Arizona asked her disjointedly.

"Uh," Callie was about to say yes but then remembered that she was grounded. "I'm grounded."

"Oh. Right," she mumbled.

"The school called my mom about me bunking the other day..." Callie explained.

"You never told her why?" Arizona asked.

"She's not that kind of mom. She may have just disowned me there and then if she found out I'd even been having sex," she replied.

"Fair enough," she said. "So, coming over is a definite no for a while?"

"I'll ask my parents tonight. Maybe they'll let me off the hook because it's for math."

"Cool. Let me know. I'll see you tomorrow first period," Arizona replied. And with that, she rolled away on her skates. Callie laughed to herself. She had forgotten about those skates.
