"Mrs. Anderson I can assure you—"
"You assured me this morning! I can assure you, Principal Figgins, that your assurances mean nothing to me at this point. If my son is going to return back to this school and be harassed without you or any of the teachers stepping in to control the students here, then I will make sure that the fact that you can't run your school makes it to the public. My husband and I are lawyers, sir. We know how to make things happen."
Blaine sat listening to his mother fight with Principal Figgens from outside the office amazed. He had never heard his mother so angry. When he had been beaten up at the Sadie Hawkins Dance, he was not present for the meeting she and his father had with the principal at that school, and he always figured it had been a mutual decision that he would not return.
"Your mom is kind of amazing." Kurt smiled at him while wiping the remnants of the slushie from Blaine's face with a damp rag.
"Yea. I wish this wasn't even an issue, but she is."
"I think she might actually get the school to get rid of that damn slushie maker. If Figgins is smart he'll throw it out today." He laughed a little.
Blaine hung his head a little and averted his eyes, "I'm so embarrassed though. It wasn't even a big deal, I've gotten slushied before—"
"Hey," Kurt pulled him into his side and Blaine put his head on his shoulder, "Anyone would have reacted the same way if they had just recovered from a major injury from a different slushie. Those guys are jerks, no one can judge you for what happened."
"I know…It's just…I just want it to be easier already."
Kurt placed a kiss on the top of his head, "Well I think you've reached the requirement of bad things happening per year so hopefully you'll be safe." He stood up and pulled Blaine up with him, "Lets go to the bathroom so we can get you out of those clothes and washed up, you're getting sticky."
"You know…I might need help getting out of them. I'm still all shaky, it was very traumatizing." Blaine smirked.
Kurt huffed out a laugh, "I think maybe you're right. I wouldn't want you tripping and cracking your head open." He took Blaine's hand and began leading them.
"Where are you going, the bathroom is that way."
Kurt leaned in and kissed him, "Well…I figured no one is probably using the handicap bathroom. You know, the one that locks. Wouldn't want someone walking in on you with your pants down."
"Oh!" The sadness and humiliation that had been evident in his eyes vanished and were replaced, for the time being, with love and desire.
That morning:
"Mrs. Anderson, I understand your concern, but I can assure you that there will be no problems here for Blaine. We've informed each of his teachers of his, um…condition…and they have all agreed to provide him with notes each day in the case that they write on the board or use a slide show. Also, as you have requested, Kurt Hummel will be allowed to leave early from class to walk Blaine to his next class until he has his glasses. Based on the doctor's note you provided, Blaine will also be able to sit out of gym class for the time being until we can come up with a better plan."
"I appreciate all of the accommodations that you are making for him, Principal Figgins, but I want to be sure that Blaine will be safe."
"I'll be fine, mom." Blaine's cheeks were flushed with embarrassment, "Kurt, my friends, they'll make sure I'm fine."
She looked at him for a moment, "I just worry sweetie."
"As I said, I can assure you that Blaine will have a day like any other."
A queasiness set into his stomach but he pasted on a smile, "See mom, it will be fine."
After shaking Figgins' hand, they walked out of his office to find Kurt waiting. He jumped out of the chair he was sitting in as soon as he spotted them.
"Good morning Mrs. Anderson."
"Good morning, Kurt. I wanted to thank you for helping Blaine out today, he's acting like this isn't a big change so I'm glad that you'll be here if something happens."
"Mom, please, it will be fine. It's just McKinley, nothing is going to happen."
"Ok, ok…well I hope you boys have a nice day, then. Kurt you're still ok to drive him home today?"
"Yes ma'am, we'll be there after Glee Practice."
"Great, I'll see you both later then. Call me if anything happens."
"Mom I told you nothing—"
"I was talking to Kurt, dear."
Kurt laughed, "I will. Have a nice day."
She kissed Blaine's cheek and patted Kurt on the shoulder before she left. Once she was out of sight, Blaine turned to his boyfriend.
"I told you I didn't want to go to Glee today."
"I know, but they prepared a song for you." Blaine rolled his eyes, "Oh come on, you know they missed you, they've been calling you non-stop and it's what we do, we sing to tell you we love you."
Kurt looped his arm with Blaine's and they began walking to collect their books from Kurt's locker. For the time being, they would be sharing a locker so that it would take less time switching out books between classes.
"I know, and you know I appreciate it, but it kind of just feels like it's rubbing it in my face that I can't do that anymore."
"Blaine, what are you talking about? You can still sing, you can still dance, it's different, yea, and you'll have to figure out new ways to move, but—"
"Look, I know, ok, I know that it's not hopeless but can we just not talk about it right now? I'll go today, listen to you guys sing, but I just…not yet ok?"
Kurt rubbed a hand up and down Blaine's arm as they stopped and began packing the books they would need, "Of course. I love you and whatever you do…I just I love you no matter what."
Blaine smiled and ducked his head, "I love you too, Kurt."
"Ok, ok, break it up! A handicap doesn't mean you two can turn into man hands and her giant." Santana said as she was passing them.
"Hey Satan, Blaine is not handicapped that's incredibly rude, plenty of people have vision pro—"
"Who said anything about his vision? I was talking about the fact that he looks like a Medusa reincarnate." She sauntered away and left them both gaping at her.
Blaine reached up and tried to push down his hair. He'd taken to putting less gel in it since the slushie accident because it took less time and it was easier to do when he couldn't see at all.
Kurt reached up and took his hand away from his head, "Don't listen to her, your hair looks great."
The hallway started to get crowded and Blaine's anxiety level began to rise with the increase of noise and his lack of being able to properly see the people passing him. He briefly looked around but when his sight frustrated him, he turned back to Kurt, "Do you think we can go to homeroom? I don't want to be out here when everyone is rushing around."
"Sure, of course." Kurt once again looped their arms together and lead Blaine to his homeroom and first class.
Things seemed to be going smoothly, though Blaine had missed quite a bit of school, the fact that he had been doing work at home mixed with McKinley's lack luster education, he never felt as though he was completely behind. Luckily, in many of his classes there were fellow glee-clubbers who were able to help him with anything he got stuck on. After each class, he would remain in his seat until the all of the kids left, and then walk to the door where Kurt was waiting for him.
Lunch was extremely anxiety producing for Blaine. The large room and the overwhelming amount of noise set him on edge. His friends attempted to keep his mind off of the rest of the room, though, and it was the first time Blaine had really gotten to speak with Sam and he found that they shared a lot of interests, especially when it came to comics action hero movies. Catching up of the gossip he had missed was interesting, but holding Kurt's hand under the table and listening to Sam's impressions is what really got him through the hour.
After lunch, Blaine felt more relaxed, and maybe that's what should have tipped him off that things were not going to remain so pleasant. After his sixth period, he again waited for the class to empty, then walked to the door, but Kurt wasn't there yet. He scanned the hall the best he could, but with all of the students moving about, he could only see a blur of colors. He waiting a couple minutes, but knew that if he didn't leave soon he would be late for history.
Taking a deep breath, Blaine began walking but stayed close to the wall. He knew the classroom was down the hall, turn right and it was the first door on the left. He didn't want to have to rely on Kurt or anyone else anymore, and if he could make it to class during the rush of everyone changing classes, then he could prove to everyone and himself that he could be independent once again.
Halfway to the end of the hall, someone bumped into him on their haste to get to class. Blaine's pulse picked up a little when he tripped, so he stopped and took a breath to calm himself. He had closed his eyes and took a breath, and when he opened them, he was met with a boy standing in front of him. A member of the hockey team, Blaine corrected himself when he noticed the mullet and jersey.
"He there Stevie."
Blaine looked at him confused, "I'm not…I'm Blaine."
"Oh, I'm referring to the nickname everyone's been calling you…you know, Stevie Wonder."
The kid, Chris, took a step towards him, causing Blaine to back up, only to bump into someone. He turned and found a large group of people standing behind him. Blaine couldn't make out definite features of them all, but he could tell that they were all wearing the same jersey. His heart began to race, "Look, I don't want any problems. I'm just trying to get to class."
Chris moved around him and Blaine backed up into the lockers behind him.
"Listen, Stevie, I know that you're blind or whatever, but that doesn't mean that you can prance around here with that fairy Hummel and get away with it. We were a little concerned that you might've forgotten where your place was, so you can imagine how important it was for us to make sure that you remembered."
"What—" The only thing that passed through his mind when he saw large white cups come from behind their backs was panic. Immediate and chest squeezing panic. He tried to press himself as close to the lockers as he could, "No…please don't."
"It just seemed like you needed something to help you cool off, and we know how much you like slushies." They all laughed.
Blaine slammed his eyes closed when they drew back their arms, and as the freezing cold liquid hit him, his mind when blank and his body began shaking violently. He vaguely hears yelling, but as his knees gave out and he slid to the floor, his only concern was breathing and being as small as possible.
As Santana had rounded the corner after her meeting with Britney in the janitor's closet, she was in a good mood. That's why when she was met with the sight of some of the hockey players surrounding Blaine and throwing multiple slushies at him, she lost it. Santana didn't like to treat anyone differently, that's why she was fast to tell people that Becky was a bitch, no one deserved extra kindness because they were different. That was a fact and she would continue to mock Blaine about his height and hair and probably a thousand different things for the rest of their lives. However, throwing a slushie at someone who had received permanent eye damage from getting hit with a slushie…not ok. To add to that, Hummel's boyfriend promptly fell to the ground and was freaking out. Santana may be a bitch, but she wasn't a terrible person, that and she actually liked Blaine.
"HEY!" WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING?"
Santana jumped a little when the voice of Coach Beiste interrupted her thoughts. She watched as the coach moved forward and she herself joined the group, however she eased her way onto the ground next to Blaine. When she placed a hand on his shoulder, he flinched.
"I ASKED YOU A QUESTION."
None of the guys moved or said anything, the only noise that was heard in the hallway was that of Blaine's sobs and fast breathing and a cup falling from one of the mullet head's hands.
"YOU THINK THAT WAS OK? THROWING A SLUSHIE AT SOMEONE? ALL OF YOU, TO THE PRICIPAL'S OFFICE."
When none of them moved, she took another step forward, "NOW!"
The guys all jumped and began walking towards the office, Beiste turned and looked at Santana and Blaine, she crouched down.
"You ok Anderson?"
Blaine didn't look up but allowed Santana to pull him into her arms, heedless of the slushie that soaked his clothes and skin.
"Once he can stand, bring him to the office so we can call his parents."
Santana nodded and Coach Beiste walked away.
Blaine was still shaking hard in Santana's arms. His breathing was not as quick but he was crying and clinging to her.
"Look, I know you're upset or whatever, but you're going to pay for getting my uniform cleaned."
She was happy when he huffed a laugh, even as he continued to cry. The hallway had emptied as the bell rang, and before long, Santana could hear someone running towards them. When she looked up, Kurt was running towards them with his hand covering his mouth, eyes wide.
"Took you long enough."
Kurt knelt down in front of the two of them and reached a hand onto Blaine's back.
"I'm so sorry! God, Mr. Murphy wouldn't let me leave and I tried to tell him that I had permission from Figgins but he wouldn't allow it. I kept trying to tell him and he made me stay after because he said I was being disobedient, I'm so so sorry."
During the middle of Kurt explaining, Blaine and moved from Santana's arms to Kurt's.
"What happened?" He looked at Santana for an explanation.
"The hockey team, Beiste got them, but if something else happens to them, I don't know who would've done it."
"Thank you for being here."
"Yea well as I already told Anderson, he owes me for this slushie stain." Santana stood up and began walking away, "Bring him to Figgins when he gets his land legs back."
When she disappeared, Kurt looked down at Blaine who had stopped crying but had yet to open his eyes. He pulled out the handkerchief he kept in his pocket and began wiping Blaine's face. When most of the slushie was gone, especially around his eyes, he put it down and kissed both of Blaine's eyelids.
"You can open your eyes now, nothing is going to get in them."
After a few flutters, honey eyes looked up at him, "Thanks." He whispered.
"Are you ok?"
"No."
"I'm so sorry, Blaine. I should've been here."
Blaine sat up a little, "It wouldn't have helped, you would've gotten slushied too. I'm glad you weren't."
"I don't know why anyone would do that to you."
"They were angry that we've been shoving our relationship in their faces or whatever."
"What? We haven't even done anything."
"I don't know. I guess because you help me around now."
"Look, lets just get you to the office and hopefully they'll take care of this."
"Yea, right. When has anyone at this school ever taken care of anything."
Kurt sighed but helped Blaine stand up, "Well, we have to go there anyway, so lets just see what happens."
"Physically you're ok though right? Nothing got in your eyes?"
"No, nothing like that. I'm cold but nothing bad. It was just so embarrassing. It's like I can't even defend myself anymore and everyone was just watching. I couldn't even think while it was happening."
"Those people who stood by and watched are cowards, Blaine, they're too scared to stand up to anyone. You have nothing to feel embarrassed about, ok?"
"I just…it doesn't change anything."
"I know."
They entered the school's office and told the secretary what they were doing there. After Blaine's mother was called, they waited for her to arrive and for Principal Figgins to be ready for them.
Kurt and Blaine walked down the hall after exiting the bathroom. Blaine had changed clothes and both were sporting pink cheeks. As they entered the office once again, they were met with Blaine's mother.
"There you are, I wasn't sure where you went."
"I had to get cleaned up. The slushie was starting to dry."
She took one look at them, Kurt's hair was messier then usual and they stood a little closer together, she raised one eyebrow at them, "I'm sure."
Both of their cheeks turned red, "Anyway, are you ready to go home? Your Principal and I have come to an agreement. Those hockey players are all going to be suspended and it has been made clear that if the slushie machine in the cafeteria is not disposed of, there will be problems. Kurt, Princial Figgins has also guaranteed that there will not be any more problems with your teachers."
"Thank you, I'm glad to hear that."
"Mom, I was thinking maybe I'd stay for the rest of the day."
She looked down at her watch then back up to him, "Blaine, there are ten minutes until the school day is over."
"Yea but I told everyone I'd be at Glee today...I'd like to go if that's ok?"
She looked at her son and saw none of the sadness that had been engulfing him since the incident, she smiled, "Of course, as long as Kurt is still willing to drive you home?" She looked to him and saw him nodding, "Well then, I'll see you at home."
Once she left, Kurt and Blaine went to Glee. A day that held tears of panic turned into a day that had Blaine crying of happiness. The club had him sit and sat on stools around him. They sang with no choreography, knowing he could not see well enough to enjoy it anyway. As his friends sang about how they were there for him and loved him, he knew that nothing would stop him from getting him where he wanted to be.
