Chapter Nine

It Begins

"Gandalf!" Kristy yelled as she rushed out of the castle only to find Faramir, a solider she had yet to meet, speaking with the wizard. With a curious glance she moved over toward Pippin to listen to what appeared to be a serious conversation.

"Faramir," Gandalf whispered as he came toward the solider. "Tell me all you know. Tell me everything."

"Faramir?" Kristy questioned as Denethor rushed out of the rooms, glancing from the window to see his son speaking to the wizard.

"Faramir is..." Gandalf trailed on.

"My son," Denethor gruffly finished as she clamped a hand onto Kristy's shoulder making her jump, turning all eyes on here.

"What..." Pippin gaped in shock.

"I know!" Kristy cried.

"You are an elf?" Gandalf asked in wonder.

"No1" Kristy replied.

"Why are you not defending your city?" Denethor asked Faramir.

"We were over run," Faramir explained.

"And?" Denethor asked.

"Did you want him to die?" Kristy whispered in shock at the coldness of his voice. Denethor let her go as Faramir looked to the ground sadly.

"I defended long as I could," Faramir answered.

"Once again," Denethor whispered. "You have disappointed me."

"I had to focus on getting Frodo out of the city. He bares the Ring to Mordor," Faramir answered a little stronger as Gandalf nodded his approval.

"You what?" Denethor asked.

"I sent the hobbit on his way," Faramir said.

"Was there a weird girl with them?" Kristy asked hopefully.

"Aye, she carried stranger wounds," Faramir answered.

"Like Jesse," Kristy mused.

"Why could I not have a son like your brother?" Denethor huffed before turning his back to his son.

"I am sorry," Faramir said.

"If you were sorry you would not be here but defending your country!" Denethor shouted turning to face him.

"I did what I judged to be right," Faramir whispered.

"What you judged to be right! You sent the Ring of power into Mordor in the hands of a witless Halfling!" Denethor yelled in anger. "It should have been brought back to the citadel to be kept safe. Hidden. Dark and deep in the vaults...not to be used. Unless at the utter most end of need," Denethor hissed.

"I would not use the Ring. Not if Minas Tirith were falling in ruin and I alone could save her," Faramir answered his eyes moving to Kristy that was slowly being dragged in the direction with his father, who would not release her wrist.

"Ever your desire to appear lordly and gracious as a King of old. Boromir would have remembered his father's need. He would bring me a kingly gift," Denethor retorted as he turned again to pace before his son, Kristy dragging in toe.

"You're hurting my wrist stop squeezing!" the girl cried.

"Who are you?" Faramir questioned.

"Do not change the subject with me," Denethor hissed swinging Kristy as he turned once more.

"Boromir would not bring the Ring here, he would have stretched out his hand to this thin and taking it he would have fallen," Faramir said his eyes never leaving Kristy.

"You know nothing of this matter!" Denethor said as his eyes followed Faramir's to the girl glaring at his feet behind him.

"I hate you," she was mouthing to the ground unaware of the eyes upon her.

"I can hear you," Denethor said as he turned to continue pacing, drawing Kristy's eyes up to his back in shock, her mouth hanging open.

"He would have kept it for his own if he had tried to take it. And when he returned you would not have known your own son," Faramir retorted.

"Boromir is loyal to me! Not some wizard's pupil!" Denethor shouted releasing Kristy's wrist, taking the chance she turned to leave when out of the corner of her eye she watched Denethor rush Faramir.

"No!" Kristy yelled jumping to him missing only to land on the ground, grabbing onto his ankles she watched the King of Gondor fall to the ground with her. Faramir watching in horror and shock as his father was taken down by some woman he had never seen before.

"Father?" Faramir asked as Denethor lay still before glaring down at the girl to held tightly to him.

"Please don't hurt him. He is your son. Boromir will be here soon to fix all of this!" Kristy begged thinking about her sister.

"Boromir can not fix this!" Faramir said in frustration.

"Of course he can. Your brother at his side they are unstoppable," Denethor said as he patted Kristy to let him go, slowly uncoiling her arms from around his feet she watched him ride up when suddenly she felt arms wrapped around her neck.

"Her room," she heard Denethor say as she watched the world go back around her, a sharp stinging come to her head.

Denethor clearly had her knocked out.

Indi continued to follow the small group her mind constantly staying on the dream that she had and wondered why Kristy was the only one being accepted.

"Careful Master! careful! Very far to fall! Very dangerous are the stairs," Gollum hissed as Frodo stumbled nearly falling from their high climb.

"Come master!" he added upon reaching the top of the stairs, looking down to the three slowly making their way up behind him.

"Come to Smeagol," he whispered as his eyes land upon the Ring dangling around Frodo's neck.

"How much further to Mordor, "Indi whined.

"Mr. Frodo!" Sam yelled as Smeagol reached his hand out toward the Ring.

"Get back!" Indi threatened noticing the look overtaking Gollum's easily read face.

"Don't touch him!" Sam ordered.

"Why does he hates poor Smeagol? What has Smeagol ever done to her? Master?" Gollum cried pulling Frodo by the wrist onto the top of the stairs as Frodo laid upon his stomach. Smeagol moved over to pat his back.

"Master carried a heavy burden Smeagol knows; heavy heavy burden. Fat one and stupid one can not know," Gollum moved closer to Frodo.

"He wants it. He needs it," Gollum whispered as Frodo looked at him in a believing every word spoken to him.

"Very soon he will ask you for it. You will see. The fat one will take it from you!" Gollum said Frodo turned to see Sam and Indi climbing up to reach them, his hand instinctively moving up to grab hold of the ring around his neck.

"Everything ok? "Indi called not hearing anything from the two above.

Author's Note: I know it's short but bare with me!
