Chapter 9: Always Let Love Take The Lead
Russian Roulette-Rihanna
Friday Morning
"Katniss. Katniss!" Peeta shouts.
I keep ignoring him. I brush my teeth in silence and prepare my things for the day. He comes up behind me and looks at me through the mirror.
"Please it's been a week without you speaking to me other than a nod or shake ` of the head! I can't live like this anymore. I already told you I was so sorry."
I keep in ignorance and I go towards the closet. He follows me feverently.
"Please just listen to me."
I turn to him and just look at him, my eyes persisting him to speak.
"Look I can't take back what I said, because even if I do, you're head on leaving me. But can't you understand that I love you and Rosie and our baby. I don't give a damn if Rosie is mine or not. She is mine regardless of what a stupid paper says."
My heart soars at his confession, it would feel better if I wasn't still fuming about the situation.
"Please just don't leave me. I can't live without you both. These past months have been the happiest I have ever been in my whole entire life. So I am asking you kindly, if I can attend with you to our baby's checkup?"
I stand there fighting with my thoughts, I want him to be there but at the same time I want to rip his head off. I muster the first words to him since a week of not speaking.
"You can come, but don't think for a minute my decision has changed."
He slouches, I pick a sweater dress.
"Katniss, please you cannot go on with that. We love each other."
I turn quickly to him, "Then why accuse me? Why accuse me of lying that that beautiful little girl is your daughter?"
Before he speaks I cut him off, fuming, "I sent in the tests on Monday afternoon, you'll know today, Peeta. Now stop pestering me."
He crosses my way and stands in front of me, "I don't care about it, Katniss."
His lips meet mine. His lips are soft and once again it feels like if he was kissing me for the first time.
"Why do you always do this to me, Peeta?"
"Because you love me as much as I love you, so get over it, Katniss, because you're stuck with me forever." he says.
He holds me tight, and I smile for the first time this week.
"We're gonna have another baby, Peeta."
He smiles and laughs at the situation.
"I am aware of that, beautiful. This time you're not running away are you?"
I shake my head, "No, I'm gonna stay here and cause a whole lot of trouble."
"Mommy, I wanna go home." Rosie complains.
Peeta picks her up and sets her on his lap, "You don't want to meet your future brother or sister?"
Rosie looks at him confused, "Where?"
I look at him crossed for having to explain to Rosie something she doesn't understand yet. He smiles at her.
"They're in Mommy's stomach. You're going to be a big sister."
She pouts and says, "Sister?"
He points at my stomach, "Baby."
She shakes her head and points at herself, "I, baby."
He laughs and hugs her, "No you are big sister."
She stays quiet for a while. I look over at Peeta and he shrugs, letting me know to leave it.
I finish filling out the paperwork, and wait for our turn to get the first images of the ultrasound of our baby.
I fidget anxiously, just wanting to go in and see what beauty is growing in my womb.
Peeta notices, and reaches for my hand. I rest my head on his shoulder.
He moves his face towards my hair, and kisses the top of my head.
"I'm sorry for this week. I'm sorry for a lot of things." he says.
I sigh and look at our intertwined hands.
I reply, "I'm sorry for leaving you in the first place. Sometimes… sometimes I think all of this would be easier if I would have told you the truth about Rosie from the beginning."
He turns his head to kiss my hair, "I understand why you thought your best option was to leave. Let's leave it in the past, and live in the future with me, because I want our future to be happy."
I sigh and take in the scent of his shirt. The nurse walks into the waiting room.
"Ms. Everdeen?" I hear her call my name.
I stand up in unison with Peeta, who holds Rosie in his arm.
"Right this way." she motions us to follow her.
We reach the room, and I am asked to change into a robe for the ultrasound.
Peeta and Rosie wait outside while I change. I let the nurse know that I am ready for my ultrasound. She ushers Peeta and Rosie back into the room. The nurse leaves saying that the doctor will be with us shortly.
I lay on the bed. Peeta sits Rosie on the floor, while she plays with the toys in the corner of te room. What a considerate space for parents who have older children.
The doctor walks in, "Hi, Ms. Everdeen." She motions her hand to Peeta, he takes it and says, "Peeta Mellark, Katniss' boyfriend."
Rosie adds, "My daddy."
Peeta looks at her, "That's right, Pumpkin." She flashes him her biggest grin, and goes back to the toys.
The doctor places the goo on my stomach. Only knowing about my pregnancy due to a stick, I won't know how far along I am until she tells me.
She pushes the scope onto my top part of my belly. We sit in silence.
Peeta asks, "Was it like this when you were pregnant with Rosie?"
I nodded, "It was hard not having anybody."
"I am so glad I am here for this. Actually makes it feel real."
I smile at him, and the doctor breaks our interaction.
"Ms. Everdeen and Mr. Mellark, you are six weeks pregnant."
She points to the screen to show us a tiny figure.
"That right there is your baby."
I grip Peeta's hand tightly. He looks at the screen.
"Our baby is real, growing inside you."
I look over to the monitor. I couldn't be happier to see our baby beginning their development.
I look over to Peeta, who keeps staring at the monitor.
"There's our baby, Peeta."
He looks over to me with tears in his eyes, "Thank you."
I ask him, "Why?"
"For allowing me to become a father again. I love you," he responds.
He leans down for a kiss. I grant him one.
The doctor then asks, "Ms. Everdeen?"
I turn to her, "Yes."
She fidgets with an envelope in her hand, "Here are the DNA results you asked me for a week ago."
I had completely forgotten about receiving those results during the ultrasound. I grab them gently, and turn them over to Peeta. He looks at the envelope, and pauses for a moment.
I ask, "Peeta?"
He grabs the envelope with both hands, and tears it right down the middle. He throws the torn papers in the garbage.
"I don't need a paper to tell me that Rosie is my daughter. She is my daughter."
He looks at me, and then to the monitor.
"You know I have always wanted a family. Here is my family. I don't need anything to prove what is already mine."
