Chapter 8- the unwanted house guest
It seemed like forever when the two killers were walking on the road in the darkness. Neither one of them spoke as they kept their eyes on the road, watching out for anything that might come up on the path to catch them off guard. Already after walking for a couple of hours on the road, Jeff and Jane found a small abandoned house where they could stay for a while until they had the energy to continue walking.
As Jane was busy combing her hair to get rid of the tangles, Jeff helped himself with looking through the stack of newspapers that were collecting dust, he wiped his hand on the dust to push it off of the papers as he read the words carefully, finding a few peculiar interesting things in there that could be helpful to help him and Jane along the way.
"There is something about a help wanted ad for a babysitter." Jeff mused as he studied the words carefully. As he searched the wanted ad, Jeff just about narrowed his eyes in confusion as he tried to decipher the words that were completely faded.
Jane shook her head, clearly not amused by what he had found and took the newspaper out of his hands. "Hey! I was reading that!" Jeff protested in a child-like manner.
"It doesn't matter anyway." Jane told while she scrunched up the newspaper in her hands and threw the paper ball away from her and her teacher. "We are not planning on babysitting while Randy and Keith are running around killing people." She bent down to the other stacks of newspapers as she searches through them to try to find anything useful, but seeing that there was nothing else she sighed and slammed her hands on the newspapers in frustration.
"Like it or not Jane, we need the money to keep ourselves protected from being seen by Randy and Keith." Jeff said, reaching for something in his pants pocket. Jane noticed a wallet in his hands once when he was done searching. How odd was it that she didn't see him pack that item while they were back at the house?
"Where did you find that?" She asked hesitantly, hoping that it was his wallet and not someone else's.
Jeff's smile grew as he replied. "I stole this from Tony once when I got rid of his body." Upon seeing that Jane was not convinced by his explanation, he narrowed his eyes. "The dead don't need money where they are going Jane, so you can relax now."
Jane sighed, still not sure whether to relax or not. "I know. I just don't feel comfortable with stealing things that don't belong to us."
"All the dead need to worry about is either flying around in heaven or being cooked underground like steaks." Jeff told her as he took out some one dollars and a ten before putting the wallet back where he had it. "Right now, we need to worry about getting some breakfast." Jane nodded, agreeing with him.
A sudden knock on the door froze them in their tracks. Jeff and Jane looked at each other in confusion, wondering if Randy and Keith had found them already. Jeff unsheathed his butcher knife and slowly crept towards the door, he could not hear any noise from the other side. His hand touched the doorknob and quickly opened it. To his relief, nobody was right by the door.
But there was a boxed up package that was present on the floor. Jane narrowed her eyes and picked it up, examining the note that was stuck on the package. "Its a message from Slenderman." She said, a little bit surprised.
"Oh great," Jeff groaned in annoyance. "what does he want with us now?" He closed the door again, making sure that nobody saw him and Jane inside of the house.
"It says here that there is one weapon we can use in case we need help to murder our desired victims," Jane read the note. "Slenderman is merely telling us that with this item he has sent us, we can call on one of those mysterious beings that will help us into finishing the mission." She shook the package a bit, hearing a little movement inside. She tore the brown paper till it revealed a small box which contained the one thing that the supernatural creature had sent to them. Jane scratched on the tape surrounding the box and opened it, to her surprise, it was just a toy that a normal kid would be interested in.
"Why did he send us a jack-in-the-box?" She asked, not understanding the meaning of why the toy was there in the first place. She picked it up and threw the box it came in away from her. She studied the designs on the toy box, nothing much was interesting to look at except that the color scheme was black and white. There was some pictures on the sides of the box, but it was kind of tough to see what the picture is to the naked eye.
"Perhaps Slendy thinks that we can distract the enemy with the toy." Jeff offered his opinion on the toy, studying the box right beside Jane. "Why would he think we need a toy to protect us is beyond my knowledge." He noticed that Jane was trying to open the jack-in-the-box, but no matter what she does the box stays shut. "Um, you do know how a jack-in-the-box works, right?"
Jane shook her head. "I never really encountered a toy like this before. When my parents brought me to a toy store to find some toys for me, I really wanted to have a jack-in-the-box for my collection of toys, but my parents told me 'no' for fear that I would have nightmares from the clown that comes out of the box." She finally found the little lever right on the side of the box and began to move it, only getting as far as the first few notes before Jeff took it away from her in a flash.
Now it was Jane's turn to protest. "I was just going to see if it works!"
"Yeah, yeah, and Slendy told us to play with it only if we need help." Jeff said in a sarcastic tone. "To which, we don't necessarily need at the moment." He moved toward the door again and quickly opened it, shouting into the forest. "You hear that, Slendy? We don't need your help, or anybody else's! So thanks for giving us a useless toy that we are too old for!"
He threw the toy as far away from the house as possible. Jane was impressed by his strong throw as she listened to the toy box crashing into the pile of leaves a few yards away. Jeff closed the door, clearly satisfied that he got rid of the toy. "That outta show him who's boss." He muttered before he turned his gaze to Jane. "Now, back to getting breakfast."
Jane tried her best not to think about retrieving the toy box as soon as she and Jeff walked out of the house and locked the door. She kept wondering whether or not that Slenderman was right into giving her and her mentor a toy box that would never give them the help they need. She and Jeff took out their sunglasses and scarves and put them on. Since Jeff has his blue scarf, Jane decided to use a green one just so that she didn't mix up the two.
A few hours later, they arrived at one of the restaurants in town and had a small but decent brunch. With their disguises on, nobody questioned Jeff and Jane on why they wore their scarves and sunglasses when it is not even winter season yet. Jane thought that the people she and Jeff watched closely didn't want to disturb them.
Jane watched as Jeff finished his two pancakes while taking very small bites out of his meal. She was already done with her scrambled eggs, hash browns and toast as she drank down the last of her milk. "Where do you think we should start searching?" She asked, breaking the silence.
Jeff sighed, "We might have to continue going through town until we find some place where there is a lot of dangerous activity going on. I don't even feel that there is any danger over where we are now."
Jane raised an eyebrow, puzzled over what he said. "You know there is danger when you feel it nearby?"
"It might be because of the strange urge I have," Jeff suspected while he took out some cash from the wallet to pay for the brunch. "I don't know how or why I have it but I do know that it has helped me be on the lookout if there is something that is a bit off."
"I wonder if I have that urge to." Jane wondered out loud but not to loud where the wandering waitresses or customers might be able to hear them. "Back before my parents died by Randy's hands I felt that he and the others were coming. Its like something in my gut is telling me to watch out, even though I try to tell it that nothing bad will happen."
"Maybe that is one of the things that Slenderman told us to keep an eye on." Jeff said. "He did say that the Nightshades power is present inside both of us. Makes me wonder what else can it do."
Their talk had to stop short when they heard a couple of laughs from the front of the restaurant. "Yeah, yeah, old man. I seem to be having somebody follow me around all of the time." One of the customers said in a sarcastic tone of voice.
"I am telling you the truth! I am not making this up." The man's voice shouted. Jeff and Jane got curious as they stood up from their table to get a closer look. Jeff quickly laid out a few dollars for the tip on the table as he and Jane walked closer. "Everywhere I go, he is nearby. Whenever I am in my house, I don't see him but I know for one thing that he is still there. I haven't slept in two days because of this madness."
"Why don't you just get yourself some sleeping pills and then have a nap?" One of the waitresses asked the man.
"Are you kidding me? If I go to sleep, he will probably kill me." The man exclaimed. "If none of you are willing to help an poor man like me I will go find help elsewhere." Jeff and Jane heard the door being pulled open and slammed shut as the customers and the staff returned to their usual routine.
Jeff and Jane looked at each other as they walked over to the door to get out of the place. "It sounds like to me that this guy has a stalker on his hands." Jeff whispered.
"And is possibly a murderer as well." Jane agreed. They didn't have to look very far to find the guy that was telling the staff his problem because he was leaning against the wall outside of the restaurant, clasping his hands right by his face. The guy doesn't seem to be to old for his age yet he is not to young, possibly in his fifties. His gray hair looked messy as if he had missed his visit to the shower and his gray sweatpants and shirt are shown to be messy as well. It almost looked like he was in a hurry for something very important.
The man looked up to see that Jeff and Jane were staring at him. "I suppose you are going to make fun of me for making up something that doesn't exist?" He asked, accusing.
Both Jeff and Jane shook their heads. "Actually, me and my friend here want to help you with your problem." Jeff said, kneeling down so that he can lift up the man. "We are currently looking for someone to turn in so that we can make the world more peaceful."
The man looked at the young killer sternly. "I am not even sure if you are going to help me or ridicule me, but I think I like the way you and your girlfriend are helping an old man out for once."
Jeff froze before he shook his head. "Jane is not my girlfriend. She is just a friend who is helping me out with looking for a couple of gangsters that killed our parents and my little brother." Jane sighed in relief at the thought.
"How strange." The fifty year old man pondered while looking at them. "You two seem to be at an age where you could be eligible for somebody to date you. Well if you insist on helping me out, I will tell you all that I need you to know."
Jane asked the questions, "Do you know the person that is stalking you?"
"All I know about him is that he seems to be following me wherever I go. But I am lucky to escape from him in the daytime. He only comes out at night." The man answered.
"Has he said anything to you or attacked you directly?"
"If you come by my house in the middle of the night you might hear the wind calling out to you when nobody is around. When you pay attention closely, you can hear the wind saying 'Who are you?'. He hasn't attacked me where I can see him, but I know he is there because of the blood that comes up in one of the bedrooms and the laundry room."
"One last question, Mr..." Jane trailed off. She and Jeff did not catch the man's last name.
"Williams. Mr. Williams is my name." The man answered quickly.
"Okay, Mr. Williams." Jane continued. "What sort of weapon is your stalker using?"
Mr. Williams replied honestly. "I have never seen him using a knife or a gun, so I believe he only uses his fists. In addition, he blends in with the shadows whenever I try to find him."
Jane noticed that Jeff had been really quiet all the way on their walk with the fifty year old man, so she asked him. "You okay, Jeff?" He nodded silently, telling her that he was listening. "Perhaps you can show us to your house, Mr. Williams?" The man nodded as he led the killers to his house.
XXXXXXXXX
It has now grown dark outside of the two story house where Jane and Jeff were staying at until the stalker is taken care of. They now stood inside of the living room where the T.V. is buzzing with static. Jeff and Jane decided that Mr. Williams would be safer in their house in the woods where he would be safe. Besides, the young killers knew that if the stalker dared to go into the woods after the man, he would have to answer to the supernatural creature that roams in the woods. After getting all of the information about what happens in the house at night, Jane and Jeff were ready to face who they are going up against.
As expected, whenever Jane hears knocking right by the house, she shudders with fright. "Whoever is doing that is thinks that it is humorous to scare somebody by knocking around the house."
Jeff was clearly annoyed by the knocking as well, but didn't show it as he looked around the place. "Maybe it is not a stalker at all. It could be a ghost that is haunting the place."
"Do you really think so, Jeff?" Jane asked, trying to calm down.
Jeff didn't answer as he quickly went into the dining room to check on the door that he locked upon entering the house. He figured that if the stalker was going to think about breaking into the house, he cannot get in when the door is locked. He and Jane later went upstairs to check on the windows and see if they were firmly secured as well, to which they were.
Mr. Williams' bedroom, the closet, and the guest bedroom held nothing that contained any sign that the stalker was present. But when the killers checked on the bathroom, that is when they heard a voice. Much like how the man explained, it sounded like the voice was apart of the wind yet there was no wind outside. The voice itself held a raspy, yet creepy tone.
"Who are you?" The voice called out in an echo around the room. Jeff and Jane did not shiver because they knew that it was coming up sooner or later. "I hear it." Jane whispered.
"That does sound like who are you." Jeff thought out loud as he and Jane left the bathroom and headed downstairs to continue checking out the place. "I hope nothing pops out and scares us."
"We might be the ones that will scare the stalker, Jeff." Jane reminded, pointing to her pale skin and black eyes and his unblinking eyes and the huge smile on his face. When they got down the stairs, they checked inside of the laundry room, stopping dead in their tracks because of the blood that was on the floor. "There shouldn't be blood here. No one has died yet." She argued while touching the thick blood with her fingers. One of the cloths that was out from the laundry basket was being blown lightly as if the wind was present.
"How is it that the door is open here?" Jeff wondered as he checked the door hinges to see if it was ripped off. There was no sign of the wood being ripped off. Someone had taken the door down without a sound. He remembered that the door was latched on tightly so that nobody could pull it apart. "And there's that voice again." The echoing voice continued to whisper its "Who are you?" as Jeff and Jane then walked outside in the backyard.
The backyard didn't have very much stuff outside. Nothing but the wooden fence that goes around the back end of the house and a few flowers that have closed its petals due to not receiving any sunlight. But the one thing that caught Jane's attention when she and Jeff were outside looking around for the source of the voice was the shape of someones face that was peeking from behind a part of the fence that was slanted a little sideways.
Just when she tried to take a good look at the persons face, it vanished into the darkness. Jane shivered as she remembered looking at that strangers eyes. The eyes almost reminded her of Jeff's, but they were sunken as far as it could go in the skull, he also had a malicious grin which is completely different from Jeff's crescent moon like smile.
The echoing from the voice stopped as Jane tugged on Jeff's right shoulder. "L-Let's go back inside." She said out of worry. Jeff didn't question her as he followed her inside of the house.
It was Jeff's turn to worry about the girl as he asked. "You saw something out there, didn't you?" With a nod from the girl, Jeff gently rubbed her head to calm her. "Everything will be okay, Jane. I am not going to let anybody hurt you."
Jane slowly grabbed Jeff's hand with hers as she mutters. "I hope you are right. I feel like I am going to be sick to my stomach." Jeff knows solemnly that she might be right on that part, he feels the urge making him alert over what is going on at the house.
He thought he heard a little plop coming from upstairs so he shushed Jane to tell her to be quiet for a moment as they listen for that sound. Yep, it was coming from the second floor of the house. The sound kept going as the young killers climbed up the stairs slowly until they reached the guest bedroom. Blood was dripping down from the ceiling and landing right on the dark blue carpet.
Jeff reached out his hand toward the blood, getting some small specks of it on his fingers. "Its definitely blood. But where is it coming from?" He said, looking closely at the ceiling for a moment before something odd happened to make him jump. The lights went out for like a split second, and in that moment Jeff felt a sharp scratch at his hands where the blood continues to pour down. He and Jane saw that there was a person in the room with them before the stranger disappeared into thin air as if he wasn't there at all.
"Dang it!" Jeff cursed as he looked at the spot where the stranger once stood before him and the girl. "Stupid jump-scares. I thought that something was odd about the blood."
"How did that guy disappear and reappear in here? I didn't even hear him come in." Jane wondered as she led her mentor toward the bathroom where she helped him wash the blood from his hands and checked on the scratch marks. The marks on Jeff's hands weren't very deep, yet it still managed to hurt him whenever Jane uses the water to wash off the blood and put pressure on it.
A minute passed by when Jane heard a soft thud that came from the closet inside of Mr. Williams' bedroom. "Stay here and make sure that the blood stops. I will go check." She told Jeff as she drew out her knife and left Jeff in the bathroom.
Once she entered into Mr. Williams' closet, Jane noticed that the only noise that was in the closet was a cardboard box. "It must have fell from the top shelf." She said, sighing in relief. She knelt down to grab hold of the box and placed it back on the shelf where it fell off from.
All of a sudden, a cold hand sprang out from the darkness of the closet and grabbed onto Jane's arm. Jane screeched in shock as she took out her knife and swings it, but the arm lets go of her, making her miss her target. "Lights out. Game on!" She heard the voice of the man say before he disappeared from her sight. Jane walked backwards from the closet with her knife in front of her, unsure of what had happened.
"Jane. I heard you scream. What happened?" Jeff's voice came from behind her. Jane turned to see him with his hands bandaged up, a bread knife is in his right hand.
"The stranger grabbed me in the closet." Jane explained, a little bit apprehensive. "I tried to attack him but he let go of me before I could land a hit on him." Jeff looked at her from her head to her feet as if checking to see if she was hurt elsewhere but didn't find anything.
He sighed. "If he ever tries to attack you again, I will make sure he goes to sleep for the rest of his life." Jeff and Jane walked out of the bedroom and down the stairs just in time for the doorbell to ring two times and then heard something slamming into the door.
"What do you think that is?" Jane said, confused by what is happening. "Do you think Mr. Williams has returned to the house?"
Jeff shook his head. "No. I told him to stay at our house and to come only when we have taken care of his little problem. I also highly doubt that anyone would be awake at this hour to pull pranks in the middle of the night."
They walked out of the hallway, through the living room and the kitchen until they noticed in the dining room that the door had completely vanished. Jeff and Jane narrowed their eyes in confusion. How the heck did the door vanish out of sight? Ignoring their confusion, the young killers decided to walk out of the house.
They walked carefully from the front yard to where the street was. That was when Jeff felt his urge growing stronger as he felt a dark presence closing in on him and the girl. This time, Jeff was prepared as he slashed his knife at the hands that were trying to scratch him again. He know had a good look at the stranger attacking him and Jane. He almost wanted to cower when his gaze locked on with the strange creature looking at him menacingly. Somehow the dark shadows covering the creatures body looked awfully like a black robe, reminding Jeff of what the Grim Ripper usually wears in the pictures. The face, was almost as frightening as Jeff's but with a different color tone. It somehow explains why his arms were deathly cold like the snow, this monsters face was really blue with wrinkles around his face.
"So, you are the creepy freak who has been stalking the poor man huh?" Jeff asked the creature. "You know what? I don't know who you think you are, but you are going down."
Jeff charged at the creature swinging his knife forward. The strange creature dodged the attack as he moved swiftly out of the way, punching the male killer in the gut. Jeff didn't let that stop him as he continued to swing his knife at the monster that stood before him. However, the monster keeps dodging Jeff's attacks as he disappears and reappears later to throw some punches at the killer. Jane thought for a moment that the mysterious stalker moved like a ghost.
Jeff got slammed into the ground from a very powerful kick to the head as the mysterious stalker grinned evilly at the sight. Jeff appeared to be out-cold from the force of the hit. "How unfortunate that a young fellow like him could stand up against a Shadowlurker like me. His soul will be mine for the taking." The creatures hands raised up in the air to finish off his game with the young killer.
Before Jane had a chance to yell "Stop!", a series of black tentacles wrapped around the creatures hands and his face. Though he thrashed wildly at the tentacles, they dragged him off to the dark forest where Slenderman is seen pulling the creature to him. Seeing that the supernatural creature had just saved Jeff's life, Jane smiled at the tall thin man.
"Slenderman, how did you know where to look for us?" She asked him.
Slenderman turned his pale empty head to look at her, noticing that Jeff had lost consciousness from the fight he had with the powerful creature. "Whenever you are close by any forest in the town or country, I always know where to look for you and the boy. I also found out that you were hiding the old man in your house in the woods. I became curious to what you are doing so I followed."
"How is he, uh, Mr. Williams I mean. Is he still okay?"
"The old man is fine. Last time I checked he was sleeping soundly on the couch while you and Jeff were at his house." Slenderman answered. "I am actually quite surprised that you two have found the Unwanted House Guest wandering around in this part of town. I thought that he was still hanging around in Africa scaring the children over there."
"Unwanted House Guest?" Jane questioned the title of the character whom Slendy is holding tightly in his tentacles. It looked like the creature was struggling to break free from his imprisonment.
"That's the name of this ignorant freak you and Jeff have caught red handed." Slendy explained. "He goes by many other names as well, yet he prefers to be called by that name and his other name Shadowlurker. My crew and I have been looking for him for a couple of centuries. Now he is finally going to pay for his crimes."
Jane wondered if she should ask him who are his other helpers, but decided not to since he was busy making sure that the Unwanted House Guest wasn't going to escape. "I also believe Jeff threw this away." Slendy held up the toy box with one of his free tentacles and placed it in Jane's hands. "I do not play games when you and your mentor need help. I want you two to keep the jack-in-the-box with you until you seriously need help."
"But how does the toy box help us? It looks like a regular old toy from the toy store." Jane asked, rubbing the dust from the toy box.
"It is merely a tool to call on one of my helpers." Slendy told. "When you turn the lever of the toy box and play the song, he will come to help you." Jane looked at the tall man, amazed by what he explained. "I suggest you and your friend get some rest now, you seem to be tired out from fighting. But next time, I want you to leave the most dangerous creatures, the ones where you and Jeff get stuck at or can't hurt them, to me and my crew."
Jane watched as Slendy disappeared into the woods, taking with him the new culprit he caught. The girl looked down at the toy box before she put it inside of Jeff's sweatshirt pocket as she pulled the unconscious killer by his arms and dragged him into the house.
Author's Note: I have been watching Little Big Planet 2 Scary levels and I was entranced by the level where the Unwanted House Guest comes in. I was having troubles with how this chapter should go but that one level managed to make me inspired to put this in there. And from what it looks like, Jeff and Jane is going to get some help in the next couple of chapters. Do you know what the toy box actually is? ;) If you do know who is coming up next in the story, you fangirls can scream your heads off now. Anyway, review whenever you like and I will do my best to bring in the next chapter.
