Chapter 9:
John didn't speak, he just go out of the car and walked over to the building. When he got to the door it was unlocked so he carefully made his way inside.
Everything was so quiet and still, even the sound of the car outside leaving made John jump out of his skin.
When John pressed the button for the lift, it was ice cold. Everything was made of metal and the building itself was quite cold.
It didn't take long before he was in the lift and it had stopped on the 3rd floor. When he stepped out of the lift he was faced with a corridor of 8 different doors. Some of the doors were made of wood and some were made of metal, but they all had the same basic lock on them. A lock picking kit could easily open all of these doors but John didn't have a lock picking kit, or anything that could be used to open a lock.
He tried to open each door but all 8 were locked and there wasn't a key were John could see. He figured he was probably being watch through hidden cameras right now so he began looking for a key faster than he had been beforehand.
After a few minutes of looking everywhere he thought you could hide a key he remembered that he often put spare keys on the tops of door frames. He slowly reached his arm up so he could run his fingers across the top of the door frame. A key then feel off the top were his hand had been.
This is a nice little puzzled, isn't it?
What's it all for though?
You know who would love all this?
You used to know him, but then he threw himself off of a tall building.
"No.." It was just above a whisper. He wasn't going to lose it here, he had no idea where he was or what was going on. He straightened up and put the key in the lock. It unlocked with a click and when he pushed the wooden door open it even squeaked. "How perfect."
The room he then walked into was small and dimly light there was only one small window on the far side of the room which had dark curtains closed over them and even with holes in them not much light shown into the room. From what John could see of the room it had a wooden floor and the walls were wooden as well. "Dark and made of wooden, this is getting creepier by the second." John sighed and walked around the room. There was a filling cabinet in the corner of the room by the window and in the middle there was a small wooden box with a CD player on it and a note next to it. The CD player was empty so John picked up the note and read it.
Hello John,
I hope you got here okay. I'm sure this is a little puzzling for you, but I'm not going to make it easy because that's no fun.
In case you haven't worked it out already, you're going to have to look for the CD.
Because this is the first one you don't have to go far.
Filling cabinet. Second draw down.
Listen to it for further instructions.
Xx
"What the hell is all that about?" He wasn't even sure why he was talking out loud but the silence was unnerving and needed to be broken.
Needless to say, John went over to the filling cabinet but he hesitated before opening the second draw.
Why the second draw?
Open the first!
Maybe there are body parts, or a gun.
Open the top draw!
The draw opened with a slight squeak of the metal-on-metal contact. John slowly looked into it and there was the CD as promised by the note. It was even in a clear case. How long had it been there?
You're so boring.
Ordinary.
Why did he bother with you?
Just as John close the draw he mobile rang and he jumped. He checked the number and it was only Mycroft.
"Mycroft, I wasn't expecting you to call."
"John, did you read out the wrong street name?"
Panic time.
"What do you mean?"
"I sent a car almost an hour ago and you weren't there or anywhere within walking distance of where you said you were."
"Okay, Mycroft. Tell me you are joking right now." John's breath was coming in shorter gasp than actual breaths.
"John, why are you breathing harder?"
"Shut up Mycroft. Just shut up and tell me you have absolutely no idea where I am right now."
"Are you in danger?"
"It's starting to seem like it more each second."
"Tell me where you are."
"I have no idea where I am. I was driven here, I thought it was you."
"Are you indoors or outside?"
"I'm in a building, it seems pretty new. I had to find a key to get into the room I'm in."
"Get out, John. You don't know who else is in there with you. And if there is someone else they probably would've heard you talking by now."
John picked up the note and the CD and made his way quickly out to the lift. "Okay I'm back in the lift."
"As soon as you're outside try and get to a road sign and stay there this time. I'll come myself to make sure nobody kidnaps you again."
"I'm sure I can manage that, I'm not a child."
"Don't be sarcastic. Are you outside yet?"
"It's in my job description. I'm making my way over to the door now."
"John." He could hear the look Mycroft was giving him just through the phone.
"Alright, alright, I'm outside now."
"Thank god. Any signs of somebody following you?"
"No, not yet."
"Okay that's good, strange but good."
"Should someone be following me?" There was panic in his voice again.
"Street name, John?
"Oh right, yeah okay, hold on."
John gave Mycroft the street name and it took Mycroft ten minutes to get to where John was.
"Thank you Mycroft, I was really worried in there."
"Well its okay now. Back to Baker Street?"
"Please, I need some tea."
On the journey home John explained to Mycroft what had happened with the strange car and the even stranger building. When he got to explaining the 'puzzle' Mycroft got more interested.
"And you left the CD player there?"
"I was in a bit of a hurry; it could have been a bomb." He shrugged.
"I doubt it was, if there hadn't been a CD then a bomb would be more likely. Did the room spark any memories for you?"
"Nope, it all seemed really out of place."
"Hmm. Are you going to listen to it?"
John held up the CD. "I don't know if I have much of a choice. Whoever it is went through the trouble of getting a car just like yours, I think they mean business."
When they arrived at 221b Mycroft had to go to a meeting so John went up to the flat by himself and put the kettle on. Mrs. Hudson appeared to be out so he set the CD on the coffee table and made himself a cup of tea.
It was already dark outside so John went around closing the curtains and putting lights on, when he got to his room he decided to get changed into his pyjamas before taking his own CD player downstairs.
"Right then, let's see what we've got here." John opened the CD player but there was already a disk in there, it was the one Mrs. Hudson had given to him beforehand. John debated listening to it first but decided that he wanted a clear when listening to this mystery, perhaps dangerous message.
When John pressed play he was greeted by a voice that had been manipulated to sound deeper than it originally was, and yet he recognized it from somewhere.
"Hello John. Are you having fun yet? I hope I didn't give you too much of a fright. I know how scared you get at times. Poor, army doctor." There was a small pause.
"I hate to be a disappointment but you're going to have to get another CD if you want to know what's going on." They laughed. "Listen to me if. You are going to get the next CD. You get to go somewhere you know pretty well. Oh I'm going to enjoy watching this. You, John Watson, have to go to Angelo's to get the next CD." They were trying not to burst out laughing now. "Someone will come and get you tomorrow if you don't get the CD before seven pm. Loads of time to cry about it. If someone does have to come and get you I'll be surprised. And annoyed. Don't worry, it was all be explained on the next CD. See you soon."
