Chapter 11 – Something called Voodoo?
'Relax, Zoe, you need to breathe,' Lauren says through her hand as she rubbed the stinging skin. North had managed to restrain her and stop her from hurting herself, he watched her facial expression carefully. There was something that was bugging him, he was convinced that she was mortal, she aged like she should and other humans could see and interact with her; yet, deep down in his belly there was a truth that was niggling at him and he couldn't bring himself to believe it.
'I...I...' Zoe stuttered as she began to awaken. North let go of her slowly, her eyes blinking as she got used to the light, her dogs were sitting up waiting for her to regain herself. 'Glass, there was glass, and uh, wings, or something, I tore myself from them... she tore her body from them, but I remembered it,' Zoe mumbled rubbing her eyes. 'So much pain, so much fear. Anger, it flooded everything,' she sighed. North wore a sad expression, Zoe sighed and breathed in deeply. 'She must have had a very good reason to do all that, you said Pitch is the guy that's taken over Jack's body?' She asked Lauren, she was still shocked at her friend's appearance, but she needed her more.
'Well, essentially yes. The darkness left-'
'It didn't leave,' Zoe cut in. Lauren jumped at her sudden interruption, she shared a look with North who was dubious. 'It didn't completely go from me, I still feel something inside, a trace. If there's a trace.. could that be a link?' She asks.
'What do mean link?' North asks kneeling next to her, he strokes one of the dogs behind the ear, Lauren perches on the edge of the chair and brushes her tails to one side, so she didn't sit on them.
'I mean, if there's a link, could we put him back or use it to find him?' Zoe asked quietly. 'I'm not this other Zoe, I couldn't tear myself from something or... go through all that pain. I'm not that strong, I'm not her, I've got a friend,' she says looking at Lauren who smiles gently. 'I have had my troubles, sure, but I'm nothing like her. I can't fight or even begin to understand the whole duty thing or her previous relationship with Pitch,' she mumbles.
'Doesn't mean you're not strong Zoe, you share many things in personality and you also have your own strengths,' Lauren says softly as she takes some of Zoe's hair and begins to weave a small plait. 'What do you mean by put him back? You'd want Pitch's essence back into your own spirit? That's madness.'
Zoe shrugged, 'I've spent nearly twenty years with him lingering inside me, with medication or not, I survived and he didn't take over. As we know what the darkness is as well, we'd be able to treat it and I'd keep everyone safe. I'm the best prison you've got.' North inhales through his teeth and shakes his head.
'No, no, no, this is risky. Besides, how we get Pitch out of Jack? I have idea, we get Jack and then simply pull Pitch out and then... trap him...' North falters. 'Okay, so there holes in the plan,' he admits as he stands up and walks over to the drink bar full of sherry and rum. 'But we find way to get you back normal and Jack back to himself,' he smiles pouring a drink. 'However that way might be,' he passes a small glass to Lauren and then another to Zoe who raises a brow, she'd indulged before but her meds made it hard to do it on a regular basis. Probably for the best. Zoe didn't hesitate to knock it back and wince at the incredibly powerful flavour and dry aftertaste.
'Zoe would know,' She says simply, Lauren raised a brow and knocked back her own shot, her tails shook as it hit the back of her throat. 'It's true isn't it,' Zoe said looking at them both and standing up. 'The real Zoe would know what was going on and how to stop this,' she sighs rubbing her eyes. She crossed the room and took the bottle from North pouring herself a healthy sized glass before taking a sip. Closing her eyes she thought hard, searching her memories there was something that was screaming at her.
'She might have a better idea, but I don't think she would know, know,' Lauren says holding out her glass for a top up. Zoe obliges, though she has to force North to relinquish his grip on her elbow as she left. 'But regardless, how would you even ask her? She's dead and uh, well not around.'
'You told me that she was a spirit so that means that she's not dead and we merely need to find a way where she can talk to us, or me, seeing as I'm supposed to be well, her reincarnation,' Zoe shrugs. 'Come on, I mean, with all the magic in the world you're telling me that there's no way to contact someone who's ''moved on'' in some way?' Lauren tilts her head and bites her lip, after a moment she shrugs a shoulder.
'Sisters,' North says suddenly. Zoe and Lauren both jumped, making Lauren swear in a dead language as her drink slopped over her chest.
'What?' Zoe asks annoyed.
'Samhain Sisters,' North repeats clicking his fingers. 'They deal with spirits, no? They know some way of doing this,' he smiles.
Lauren shakes her head. 'You'll have to go see them on your own, me and Rosie don't get on, it's a fox, wolf thing. She's perfectly nice and all, I just feel on edge around her. Besides, I've got stuff to do, duties and all of my own,' she apologises. Zoe smiles and hugs her friend tightly. 'I'm sorry I hid this from you for so long Zoe,' Lauren adds as she holds her, she feels Zoe shake her head.
'Don't even think about it. I'm happy you're still a friend and y'know, actually real,' she laughs. Lauren grins a toothy smile and nods, letting her go. 'I'll see you later right?' Zoe asks as the Kitsune wanders towards the door after giving the dogs a obligatory scratch. Zoe smiles as she leaves and looks at North. 'Samhain Sisters, right? Okay, let's do this, I mean sooner rather than later no?'
….
Rosie rolled around on the floor with the two dogs, taking pleasure in some canine fun. Ashley stood amused as she leant against one of North's tables. They had come quite quickly when news had gotten to them, now they had been told of the situation they were figuring out the logistics. Zoe was perched on the edge of the opposite table resisting the urge to grab Ashley's tail, it was fascinating. Rosie was just as interesting, she had barely said hello before being tackled by the dogs and turning into a wolf herself. 'So is it possible?' Zoe asks the sisters, biting her thumbnail as Ashley pulls a face.
'Well, yes? And no? It depends on what is really left of the Reaper's spirit, also, there's a crucial thing that we're going to need and I highly doubt that we'll have it,' she says quite bluntly. 'I mean, I'll ask around but I'm not holding out much hope.'
'What will we need?' Zoe asks curiously.
'Uh... well to frank, we need something of her,' Ashley says running a hand through her hair. 'And I don't mean her stones, or clothing which I'm sure Jack has plenty of-'
'That's not creepy at all,' Zoe mutters interrupting her quietly.
Ashley laughs and shakes her head. 'Look, it can't be easy hearing about Jack and Zoe, especially as everyone keeps referring her to you, but you have to understand that honestly, they had their faults, but they really were in love and they fought for it,' Ashley sounded almost proud. She switched back to the subject at hand and paused for a moment as Rosie and the pair bounced past them, tongues lolling out. 'We're going to need some hair or something,' Ashley shrugs. 'Sounds grim I know, but I don't make the rules. There's a chance this won't even work,' she adds.
'What about teeth?' Zoe asks as her eyes drift over to her sketch book and she saw the page that it was open to. The Tooth Fairy seemed to shimmer on the paper, her colours bright. 'She's bound to have of her teeth right? I mean, she got into fights and that, her fairies would have bound to have picked one up?' She said hopefully.
Ashley grinned, her own teeth sharp and glittering in the lamplight. 'Oh yeah, she got into a few fights. That sounds like a brilliant idea.'
