CH 9- A Little Happiness

Johnny sat in the backseat of his mother's 1957 210 Blair, calmly resting his head against the headrest, his eyes rested out the window to the road's darkness. The sun had set over their ride out to the Walker residence in the outskirts of Boston. He listened to his mother and Rachel talk about things regarding people at work but wasn't too interested in their gossip. Rachel and Lana laughed in their conversation that only they found interesting. It was obvious to Johnny how natural they were with one another and how happy they made each other. To him it was all just normal. They were normal.

He moved his head to the side looking down at the two pumpkin pies that Rachel had baked earlier that morning in what Lana called her kitchen sitting besides him. Lana had intended to help but she only ended up messing up the first two pies and frustration Rachel along in the process. The funny thing about Rachel was that when she was mad or frustrated, she didn't get mad at the people around her or took it out on them. She became frustrated with herself and the situation. Her cheeks would go red with frustration and she'd pout and mumble angrily at whatever task she was doing. This made Lana laugh and she'd kiss Rachel's cheek repeatedly to calm her.

However, that morning, Rachel was so fed up, she shooed Lana out of the kitchen in a huff.

"Don't you poke those pies, Mister." Lana said looking through the rearview mirror.

Johnny frowned. "I wasn't poking!"

"I have eyes in the back of my head, you can't lie to me."

Johnny crossed his arms. "I wasn't."

Rachel turned around with a smile, "Don't worry, I'll make sure you get the first slice."

Johnny smiled from ear to ear.

"You spoil him too much." Lana told her.

Rachel laughed, "I'm not spoiling him." She gave Johnny a wink and turned around.

Johnny leaned against the front seat of the car. "Can I have two pieces of pie?" He asked Rachel.

"As many as you'd like."

"See? You do spoil him."

"Mom, I'm not spoiled." Johnny retorted. "Its Thanksgiving, you're supposed to eat tons."

Lana and Rachel laughed.

"Okay, okay, fine." Lana gave in, "Now sit back down and put your seat belt on."

Johnny sat back down and did as he was told.

It didn't take them long to reach the Walker home soon after that. Johnny was the first to jump out of the car and Rachel was the last. She was rather nervous since they would be announcing their moving in together. Kit was already aware of their relationship and so were his kids but Kit announced that his new girlfriend would be joining them. Rachel was pretty nervous about coming out in front of a stranger. Kit assured them that she was open minded and accepting. After all, she had accepted a man with two children from two different women. And not to mention that the Walker kids adored her. They were simply crazy about her according to Kit.

Still, Rachel was also nervous about how Johnny would react. With Rachel moving in, not only would he have to share his mother but his home too. Lana told her that it would be fine. Johnny loved her. He loved having her around and the fact that she would be moving in to complete their little family would make him happy.

Lana noticed Rachel's nervous eyes as she gazed out to the Walker house. Johnny had already made his way to the front door with the pies in arms. She walked over to her and wrapped her arms around her midriff. "Hey," She said sweetly, "What's the matter?"

Rachel snapped out of her trance and looked to Lana. Her cheeks looked flushed. "Nothing."

"Nothing? Ms. Dylan, you know very well you can't lie to me."

Rachel bit her bottom lip nervously. "Lana, I'm scared."

"Scared of what?" Lana worried at this.

"I don't know. I just want this to work."

"It will." Lana took her hand, "Trust me."

Rachel took in a deep breath and tightened her hold on Lana's hand. "Okay, I trust you."

The two women followed after Johnny who waited patiently at the door before he knocked.

They made their way up the porch and before Lana knocked on the door, she looked over to a nervous Rachel. "Ready?"

Rachel put on a smile, "Ready."

It was Kit who opened the door moments after Lana knocked. "Hey!" He greeted them cheerfully, "You guys made it!"

"Hey, Uncle Kit."

"Hey, Champ." Kit ruffled Johnny's hair.

"We brought pie." Johnny announced and filed inside with the pies in arms.

Kit laughed, "Good, we'll need it."

While the adults hugged hello, Johnny placed the pies in the kitchen and joined with Thomas and Julia in the living room. Kit introduced Lana and Rachel to his girlfriend, Jen. She was a pretty flower child with kind eyes and a darling smile. She hugged Lana and Rachel hello and offered them something to drink.

Lana could tell right away that Kit was extremely smitten by her. Just the way he looked at her was obvious. Lana was glad, she didn't think Kit would meet someone new after what had happened with Grace and Alma. Even he had said that no woman would want a man with two kids but Jen proved him wrong.

"Kids, come help set the table." Kit called out but the kids continued their shenanigans.

Lana and Rachel were in the kitchen. Kit had made the turkey and Lana was sure his attempt would be more victorious than hers (if she had even attempted to do so). Lana noticed Rachel reaching in the high cabinets for clean plates. She stalked over and wrapped her arms around her waist again, burying her face in Rachel's hair. Rachel's hair smelled of sweet coconuts and her body of Chanel perfume. It drove Lana insane.

"Lana." Rachel said, her cheeks blushing red. "What are you doing?" She laughed.

"Nothing." Lana said as she brought her hands slightly up Rachel's stomach.

"Someone could walk in!"

"Oh, its not like anyone doesn't know about us."

"Yes but still."

"Why are you so worried?" Lana pulled away so Rachel could turn around and face her. "You're not going to lose everything all over again, you know."

Rachel sighed. "I know but I can't help but be scared."

"Don't let the fear get to you." Lana leaned in closer and kissed the corner of her lips tenderly.

"Oh, I'm sorry." A voice interrupted them.

Rachel jumped out of Lana's arms and the two women turned around to see Jen standing there. She was biting back a smile but looked rather embarrassed for having interrupted them.

Rachel instantly choked on her words but Lana remained calm. "Oh, that's quite alright." She said.

"Need any help?" Jen asked as she filed into the kitchen. Kit had told her in advance that Rachel and Lana were a couple and she most definitely had no problems with it. She had told Kit that some of her close friends she met at music festivals were also homosexuals and they were the kindest people she had come upon. She was just happy to meet Kit's family. He had told her what he and Lana had been through over the years and understood how close they were.

"Sure." Lana said. She looked over to Rachel and nudged her, "Hey, you."

"Right." Rachel laughed nervously and continued to reach for the plates.

"Come on, guys!" kit said when he entered the kitchen; "We're supposed to do this as a family!"

But all he got from the kids were squeals and laughter. The adults set the table while the kids watched a rerun of A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving on the television in the living room. Johnny and Thomas sat on the floor in front of the screen while Julia sat on the sofa. She had a monster truck on her lap and spun its wheels lazily as her attention was set on the cartoon.

"Kids, dinner." Kit said, "And I'm not gonna repeat myself again."

The tiny, unusual families sat on the dinner table with the grand feast that they had prepared.

"Kit slayed away in the kitchen all day." Jen boasted; she was proud of Kit who sat at the head of the table.

Kit tried to hold back a smile but he couldn't. However, he remained pretty modest about his simple dinner of turkey, yams, mashed potatoes, greens, corn, and biscuits—amongst other things. He didn't want anyone else to lift a finger but Rachel had convinced him to let her make the pies so he gave in. Lana was relieved she didn't have to cook anything because she was sure it would have come out badly. She couldn't believe that after so long her cooking was still so terrible. However, she found it comforting that Johnny liked her cooking—then again he was probably just used to it and couldn't tell the difference.

Before they ate, Kit gave thanks. He was thankful for his family being there with him, for his beautiful children and for meeting Jen. He said he was also thankful for his new auto shop and for his new car. After Kit went Jen who was thankful for simply being included in their intimate dinner. Everyone took turns speaking about the things they were thankful for. When it came to the kids, they were mostly thankful for things like each other, their parents and simple things like tv shows, a certain type of food and the weekend.

"What are you thankful for, Johnny?" Kit asked Johnny who had been picking at his biscuit, too hungry to wait during everyone's long lists of thanks.

"Uh," Johnny said rather nervously as he sunk back in his chair and kicked his feet. He pushed his glasses up his nose. He was shy when it came to public speaking even though he was around close ones. "I'm thankful for my Mom."

Lana smiled wide when he said this.

"And Rachel too."

Rachel couldn't help to smile either but she also wanted to cry at the thought that Johnny had thought enough of her to include her in something so special. Lana reached over and placed her hand on hers and gave it a light squeeze.

"I'm also thankful for my dog Scout and everyone else here. Oh! And Pop Rocks."

"Yeah!" Thomas agreed about the new candy they had come across.

The boys laughed and once everyone was done saying what they were thankful for, they began to eat. Lana and Rachel had decided to wait after dinner to announce their news. They didn't want dinner to be ruined in case someone didn't take it so well.

The adults discussed a variety of things like the current gas prices, the line of work and just simple gossip of people they knew. They also talked about the change in style and clothing. Lana claimed the times were changing and Kit agreed with her. Even the music was changing. They also talked about the end of the war over in Vietnam that had ended earlier that year. Jen then told them about where she came from and what she was doing now in Boston. The kids talked to themselves, nonsense mostly.

After the main course was done, Rachel brought out the pie and like promised, she gave the first big piece to Johnny. The kids took their pie and went back into the living room to watch the cartoon movie marathon that was currently running. The adults joined them too but instead of watching tv, they continued to talk amongst each other. At one point, Lana stood to her feet and called their attention. Even the kids stopped and gave her their full attention.

Lana cleared her throat. "Um, well, I just wanted to once again say I'm thankful we could all be together tonight. And—" She looked to Rachel and extended her hand out to her. Rachel took it and stood up along with her. Lana looked at Rachel and kept her eyes on her, "As you all know, Rachel and I have been together for a while now."

"The way you two look at one another, I have no idea how it's even a secret." Kit joked. Jen smacked his arm. He laughed.

"Ha ha, very funny, Walker." Lana told him. The kids laughed next, except for Johnny who remained very quiet through it all. "Anyway, we just wanted to announce that…" Lana paused and looked at her son who watched them with calm eyes, "That Rachel and I are moving in together."

"What?" Kit instantly jumped to his feet. His smile spread from ear to ear and he hugged the two women, "Holy crap, Lana! Congrats."

"Thanks, Kit." Lana said, hugging him back.

When Lana let go of Jen's congratulatory embrace, she glanced up to see Johnny who was sitting on the sofa, his attention on them.

After Rachel hugged Kit, she too looked to Johnny. His expression was unreadable and they became nervous of his reaction since he hadn't said anything of the matter like Thomas and Julia had. Even they seemed excited for Lana and Rachel.

"Johnny?" Lana called his name.

After a moment, Johnny stood to his feet. "Rachel? You're going to live with us now?"

Rachel and Lana looked to each other before Rachel took a step forward. She nodded. "I am. If that's okay with you, that is."

Instantly, a giant smile spread across Johnny's face. "Yeah!" He said and ran into Rachel's arms, giving her a hug.

"Whoa!" Rachel was surprised by his reaction, almost stumbling backwards but she caught herself and Johnny and hugged him back.

Lana went up to them and brushed Johnny's hair. "Are you okay with this?" She asked him.

Johnny pulled away. "Yeah." He looked to Rachel, "Did my mom ask you to?"

"She sure did."

"Wow, it was about time."

Lana laughed and nudged him playfully. "Hey."

"When are you moving in?" Kit asked.

"Yeah." Johnny agreed.

"I don't know yet." Was Rachel's answer.

"As soon as possible." Was Lana's.

"Tomorrow?" Johnny asked.

Rachel laughed. "I wish but it'll take me more than I day to get all my stuff moved in. She brushed Johnny's hair back in place, happy and relieved that he had accepted her.

"We'll make time." Lana assured them.

By the time the clock struck eleven o'clock, the kids were passed out on the sofa and the adults were chatting in the dining room. Lana noticed the time and announced their departure. Johnny didn't have school the next day due to the holiday but she didn't want to drive home late at night. Rachel helped her rouse Johnny awake from the sofa and walk him to the front door.

They said their goodbyes and parted. Rachel wrapped an arm around Johnny and led him back to the car to get him strapped in. Lana stayed behind on the porch to have a few last words with Kit. Jen had gone back inside to get the kids into bed.

"So," he said, leaning against the front door, his arms crossed. "You finally asked her to move in."

Lana smiled softly. "I did."

"Johnny was right, it did take you long enough."

"Hey, its harder than it seems." Lana admitted. She had not lived with another woman since Wendy and sharing her home and her life with someone new was nerve wrecking.

Kit placed his hand on Lana's shoulder, "Hey, you'll do fine. Just enjoy it and everything will come into place."

Lana inhaled the cold November air knowing that Kit was right. Asking the woman she loved to move in was the right thing to do. After all, Lana deserved a little happiness.
