Chapter Nine
Beca had fallen asleep on the couch, and Chloe surprisingly didn't mind. It gave her some time to get her thoughts together. As much as she wanted Beca back in her life, and let's be honest – Lindsay too, even though she didn't really know the girl – she wasn't quite sure if she could do it right now. Beca needed to earn her trust back, and that is something and Chloe doesn't give out willingly after one chance.
Chloe ran her fingers through her hair, giving on last look at Beca. She got up and grabbed a blanket which she gently draped over the sleeping brunette before leaving a faint kiss on the girl's temple. She slid off her flip-flops, going to place them in the hall near her other shoes before padding quietly to her room.
Most of the day was spent talking with Beca, getting herself re-acquainted with the brunette. When she looked at the time on her phone, she realised Aubrey was probably just ending her shift, so she called her best friend.
"Please tell me you talked to Beca." Aubrey said, getting straight to the point.
Chloe let out a faint laugh, "I did. It was actually kind of nice. She told me about Lindsay and why she left. I finally have some answers," she paused, trying to think of what to say, but before she could, Aubrey interrupted her.
"Oh no, Chloe. I know you. I know that sound in your voice. You really want her back after what she did to you?"
The redhead looked down, playing with a string on her jeans. "I do," she breathed. "I just – I've missed her so much, and I know we can be a family again, even with Lindsay if she got custody of her."
"Chloe, listen to me." Aubrey said sternly, "she broke your heart. Who knows what she might do if you let her back into your life again. I care about you, Chloe. So much, and I just don't want to see you get hurt again."
"I know, but… She's the love of my life and I just want her back in my life." Chloe uttered in a voice so small, Aubrey almost couldn't hear her.
"I'm not saying she isn't, but do you really think right now is the best time? I mean, she just came back after almost two years saying she has a child. That's a lot to take in." Aubrey replied softly, knowing that Beca is all Chloe has wanted since they first met in college.
Chloe and Aubrey were trying unsuccessfully to recruit new members for their acapella group, The Barden Bella's. After their loss last year and Aubrey's barf-gate, as people called it, no one wanted to join the group (and let's face it, Aubrey was kind of a bitch).
As they were talking and handing out flyers to passerby's who could care less, Chloe saw someone who was walking amongst the crowd seemingly unimpressed.
"Oh, what about her?" Chloe asked as she pointed to a brunette with dark makeup and 'ear monstrosities' as Aubrey called them.
"Chloe, no! She's all… Emo looking, and look at those ear monstrosities."
Chloe had completely ignored her best friend and waved the brunette over. "Hi! Would you like to join our acapella group, the Barden Bella's?" Chloe asked with a bright smile, instantly locking eyes with navy blue ones.
Beca made a face, "Oh, right. That's a thing now isn't it?" She asked, looking between the two women. "Sorry, I don't sing."
Chloe's smile dropped slightly along with her hand that was outstretched towards Beca after she took the flyer.
Chloe smiled, thinking back on the day they first met… and bursting into Beca's shower naked. She laughed softly over the phone.
"What are you laughing about?" Aubrey queried.
"Oh, just thinking back to first meeting Beca and then bursting into her shower when she was singing and making her sing with me."
"Chloe! Oh my god! You can't just burst into someone's shower like that!"
Chloe laughed a little louder this time, hearing Aubrey shriek. "Hey, I'm confident about all this," She replies, waving her hand in front of her body even though Aubrey can't see. "And I did get Bec to audition."
Aubrey shook her head on the other line, "There is something wrong with you Chloe. I have to go now. Bye."
Chloe said her goodbye and hung up, not noticing Beca was standing in her doorway until she spoke.
"You know, you bursting into my shower made me very uncomfortable. Mostly because we were naked and it made it harder to keep my eyes off of you." She smirked.
Chloe jumped, and turned around when she heard Beca speak. "How long were you listening?"
Beca shrugged, leaning against the doorway. "Long enough."
Chloe bit her lip and looked down at her bed sheets, waiting to see if Beca would say anything else, and she did.
"You know," She began. "I really want to be with you again, and I know I would have to do so much to prove to you that you can trust me. I will do whatever it takes, Chloe." She moved to sit on the edge of the bed in front of the redhead. "I, uh, I'm hoping to get custody of Lindsay and move back here, into my own apartment instead of staying with Jesse. I mean it when I say I love you and will do anything I possibly can to make you see that."
Chloe turned her head away as tears started forming in her eyes and cleared her throat before whispering, "I want to believe you, I really do, Beca. But I don't think I can right now. Do you have any idea what you did to me when you left?"
It was Beca's turn to sigh this time. "I have an idea. I know it was horrible what I did, and a coward's way of doing things." She reached up, turning Chloe's face to look at her. "You have been the best and scariest thing to happen to me, Chloe. I've always felt like I never deserved you, but I somehow did something to make you fall in love with me. Whereas you didn't have to do anything to make me fall in love with you. Even if I woke up with amnesia and didn't remember anything, I would remember you."
Chloe playfully slapped Beca's arm. "You're such a sap, Mitchell. And, I think it was that smirk and those 'ear monstrosities' that made me fall in love with you." Chloe smiled. A real smile that no one has seen in a long time and it felt good.
Beca smiled as well. "That's the Chloe I know and love."
"Hey, don't think because you're being all lovey dovey means I'm gonna take you back. We have a lot to work on before we get even close."
Beca nodded her head understandingly. "I completely understand. I wouldn't think anything less."
Beca knew Chloe. She knew how she worked, how she thinks, how she smiled, everything. When it came to Chloe Beale, she was always blown away or speechless. Whether it was talking about Chloe, describing her to someone or coming home and seeing her every day or seeing her for the first time in ages, she was always blown away.
Chloe had this charisma to her that you couldn't find anywhere else. You could spot her a mile away with her firey red locks, or single her out in a crowd full of people by her laugh. Beca always knew her wife and she always would. They had something special from the first time the locked eyes with each other and Beca had made a promise to herself that she would always get Chloe to smile just so she can see it.
Chloe looked at Beca after she had seemingly spaced out. Beca was staring right at her; like she was looking into her soul. God, I just want to kiss her. It's been so long. I miss her. Her touch. Her everything. Chloe thought to herself, a smile still playing at her lips.
Because Beca was still off in space, she grabbed the brunette's hand and pulled her to lay down on the bed with her. Beca smiled softly.
"What are you doing?"
"You're going to lay down and cuddle with me."
"Yes because as much as I'm trying to hate you, I can't. I'm sick of holding a grudge and I just want my wife – ex-wife – to lay down with me and hold me."
Beca didn't say anything else. She just did as Chloe wanted her to and lay down behind the redhead, pulling her close. They didn't have to say anything though, because they could both feel it. They knew they were meant to be like this again, but just how long would it take to get back to this?
Chloe let a sigh escape her lips as she snuggled into Beca, lacing the hand that Beca hand around her waist with her hand. She felt peaceful. Like the whole past year and a half was a dream and that her and Beca were still married, and everything was right between them.
Except, it wasn't.
But they would pretend it was just for now as they lay there together on the bed in a peaceful silence.
