Percy didn't know whether or not he should be angry or amused. The daughter of Athena was a very interesting person. Stubborn more than any girl he had ever met. In his time girls weren't like that they were simple to understand and they knew their place in the world. They didn't interfere in matters of Prophecy unless they were told to. They understood the word boundaries. But not girls in this century, they were so different. Sure they were beautiful like before but there beauty was not innocent. In this century girls weren't described using one word. They were dangerous and flirtatious. One girl would want to kill him while one would want to kiss him. It wasn't so different from what camp was like 2000 years ago. However, girls weren't has forward as they were before and definitely not as confusing. Percy wasn't used to girls like that sure he had some experience with the opposite gender but it was never serious.
After Percy's talk with Annabeth the annoying smart girl, as he liked to put it, he found himself walking along the edges of the forest. His thoughts wandered all over the place all over his unwelcomed past. He had been through a lot as a young demigod. He had been through many wars and battles but the most dreadful one still replayed in his mind time and time again. After seeing Chiron he couldn't stop thinking about what happened all those years ago. But what hurt most of all was seeing that girl Annabeth, every day since he saw her. She reminded him of her. If she had lived she would have been exactly like that daughter of Athena excluding the eyes and hair. He knew without a doubt that, Halimeda would be smart and cunning with a knack of annoying him just like that girl.
He wasn't mad that Annabeth that had tried to use charmspeak on him. If anything he was amused. She was the kind of girl you knew would see right through you with those piercing gray eyes. But she was just as dangerous as any child of Athena. He knew she was the chosen one to follow the Mark of Athena. The minute he saw her. She was just to smart one of the reasons he didn't like her.
Percy shook his head trying to get his jumbled thoughts to be organized but no matter how hard he tried his dyslexic and ADHD brain wouldn't follow his command. Looking up he knew it was late from the looks of the darkened sky. He needed to go to sleep for the hunters would be coming tomorrow. He knew Artemis would talk to him the minute she had a chance she may not like him or men that much but she understood his sisterly love for Zoë, one or three people who could see right through him.
With a sigh Percy headed to the beach his sleeping area. He couldn't stand being in his cabin for a minute it reminded him of his barracks in Greece when he slept in the Poseidon cabin with his half-brother. Those were the days when they were brothers by blood, friends by choice before Percy went to Rome. Before things got bad.
When approaching the beach much to his surprise lying on the sand staring at the lake and stars was none other than Chiron's favorite female demigod of this century. Percy slowly walked quietly behind the golden blonde haired girl approaching behind a rock to pick his sleeping gear a sleeping bag he bought off from the Stolls and his backpack that served as his pillow. He settled his stuff a few feet away from the daughter of wisdom not sure how to approach this situation. He lost all his people skills in Tarturus.
She turned towards him her blonde hair glistening in the moonlight. She looked shocked to see him but immediately recovered. She turned her head to face the sky refusing to look into his eyes. Percy just followed her gaze leaning his head against his backpack tilting his chin to see the constellations. They faded since the last time he saw them before the Giant War, before his world came crashing down. Percy didn't know what to say. He could ask why she was here but it wasn't his right to question why she was near the lakeside, open to everyone in the camp. So he went for the subtle approach.
"What's that constellation, I don't know the name of it," Percy asked pointing a finger to the outline of a girl hunter. He knew all the constellations by heart but that one was knew to him. Following his finger she had a look of sadness pass her eyes.
"A hunter of Artemis died a few years back on a combined quest with demigods to save a captured half-blood and the goddess Artemis," she said with sadness, "the hunter died with honor fighting against a Titan in memory of her Lady Artemis added a new constellation as a reminder of the hunters strength and courage," Annabeth continued in a monotone voice as if she was reliving a horrible experience.
"Zoë Nightshade," Percy whispered but Annabeth could hear it. She nodded her head.
"You knew her," she asked her brain trying to process the information but her brain just wanted to take the moment all in. He just nodded his head lost for words too sad and guilty, he should've been there.
"You're not going to tell me how you knew each other, are you," Annabeth asked breaking the silence of grieving back to her feisty tone needing answers. But she already knew the answer to the question. Instead of answering her Percy sat up turning his body to face the girl before him.
"Why are you even here," Percy asked forgetting about being subtle. Completely irritated she had no right to question him about Zoë but then again he was just mad that he didn't know anything about what happened to Zoë. For that he felt like a horrible friend and brother.
"Shouldn't I be asking you that?" Annabeth fired back sitting up as well staring defiantly at the man before her. Their eyes focused on one another, green on gray.
"I asked first," Percy fired back causing Annabeth to roll her eyes and stand up with a huff. Percy followed suit.
"You're so childish," Annabeth accused a bewildered Percy as she stomped off but Percy grabbed her wrist at the last second forcing her to turn around to face him.
"I am the childish one. You're the one who used a daughter of Aphrodite to manipulate me. You're so keen on digging your nose where it doesn't belong. There is a reason why there are some things in this world are hidden from you. What you need to know is I am not the enemy. I am here to help and I expect respect and trust," Percy said rather fiercely
"You tell me to trust you but what reason do I have to trust you. I am the camp leader. These demigods look up to me. I will not lead them in a war blindly trusting a stuck up son of Poseidon," Annabeth replied equally as fierce.
"Look, I understand you don't want to trust me. If I were in your position I wouldn't trust me either. But If I were the traitor I wouldn't be here. I would have sought out Gaia. Yet here I am training your campers. I want them to succeed as much as you do. I have every reason for Gaia to lose as much as you do even more. " Percy said gathering all his composure sounding a lot calmer. He then turned around from the daughter of Athena lying down on his back with a sigh. Annabeth cautiously took a seat beside him, not too close.
"I will trust you on one condition," Annabeth said waiting for him to let her continue.
"Ok what is it," Percy said deciding he had no choice. He needed the camp leader to trust him or how else would he be able to gain the trust of the other campers. His life would be easier especially during the quest.
"You have to swear on the River Styx that what ever question I ask you, you must answer truthfully, no lies," Annabeth said driving a hard bargain.
"I've got nothing to loose," Percy said with a shrug of his shoulders. Annabeth didn't doubt him for a second. "I Perseus Andrew Jackson swear on the River Styx that whatever question Annabeth Chase asks me I will answer truthfully to the best of my abilities," Percy said murmuring his full name so Annabeth wouldn't hear.
"Ok, then are you working with Gaia," Annabeth asked Percy who just rolled his eyes.
"No I am not, I am an ally of Olympus," Percy said getting tired of saying he is not a traitor.
"What's your full name," Annabeth asked, pushing her luck.
"Sorry, but I am not to tell you my first or last name," Percy said with a smirk immediately annoying Annabeth,
"Middle name,"
"Andrew," Percy said with a smile. This smile did not have anger or arrogance in his eyes just kindness and happiness as if he was thinking of a fond memory. Andrew was a Greek name for brave it made sense.
Annabeth couldn't help but smile back it was contagious. She finally got some answers but that wasn't the reason she was smiling at the boy whose raven black hair shined in the moonlight.
