Chapter 9: Love
~Kanda~
Black Order, Hallway, 7:33pm
'Fuck fuck fuck fuck!'
Kanda screamed in his mind to express his panic as he sped through the halls,
'He collapsed- Allen collapsed and I wasn't there! Why wasn't I there!? "Fuck!"'
"Kanda calm down! We're almost there; yelling curse words won't speed us up!"
'Lavi- Oh yeah Lavi. It is his goddamn fault!'
Flashback ~ Black Order, Kanda's room, 6:49pm
Kanda watched Allen run through the doorway, as Lavi stumbled from the young boy's shoulder push. And like any worried significant other Kanda followed Allen. After only two steps towards the open doorway leading into the hall Kanda was blocked by an arm.
"Stay."
"Che. Baka-usagi." Kanda huffed as he successfully pushed the arm blocking his path and took another step as Lavi quickly breathed out more.
"Please, Kanda, he needs to talk to her alone. I can't comfort her but Allen can."
Kanda stopped short, he was hesitant, Lavi never begged… Well not with sincerity- and Kanda could hear it, sincerity along with pity. He hated Lavi but he was his friends- one of very few- and Lavi needed this.
"If anything happens to him you're dead."
"Allen will be fine. He'll be with Lena, he'll be fine. I mean what could happen?" Lavi joked with a smile.
End of Flashback ~
Black Order, Infirmary, 7:35pm
Kanda burst the door open and ran inside- right into a nurse,
"Kanda? Miss Klein?! Are you okay?"
Kanda flew his head to Komui, who was standing over him with wide eyes waiting for an answer. Before even turning back to the nurse- Miss Klein- he jumped up in front of Komui,
"How is he?! How is Allen? Tell me he is fine!"
"Kanda-"
"Tell me!" Kanda shouted into his supervisor's face grabbing his coat to pull him down an inch to Kanda's eye level.
"…Allen is-" Komui started but was interrupted by the head nurse's loud and very angry voice.
"Get out! Everyone out!" Kanda turned to her, startled to be knocked out of his panic attack. 'Everyone? But-' Kanda turned his head to see that, there was in fact, everyone standing there. He was so lost in his panicked world that he never even registered them. Lavi, Lenalee, Reever, Johnny, and that was only the few he immediately recognized.
"Now!" The head nurse yelled again making everyone jump and begin to scatter out the door, everyone except Kanda that is. He only stood tall and turned directly to the head nurse.
"No." He answered,
"I don't-"
Eyes full of both fire and ice interrupted her.
"No." Kanda repeated, "Not until you tell me. I need to know that he is okay. The one carrying my children. The one who is my life, my family, the one I love. Please tell me before you kick me out. Is Allen okay?"
The head nurse looked into the young man's desperate eyes and hesitated, she took a deep breath and closed her eyes as if she had a headache, and then she answered,
"Boy…" She sighed again before putting a strong arm on Kanda's shoulder,
"Allen Walker is stable, he fainted and we don't know why yet but we will, but for now, he is okay."
Kanda exhaled slowly and looked into the nurse's eyes again before whispering, "Thank you."
Then he turned and walked out of the infirmary.
Black Order, Hallway outside the Infirmary, 9:00pm
Yuu Kanda banged his head on the wall again. He sat on the order's stone hallway floor with Lavi on his left silently reading a book. The blue-haired samurai didn't even care to look or ask the Bookman Junior what the book was. He didn't care; about the book, about Lavi, about the fact he hadn't had dinner, or even the fact that he needed to pee very very badly. Allen Walker took every thought in his head and nothing could stop it.
He and Lavi had been sitting on the cold hard stone floor for over an hour. Lenalee wanted to stay too but Komui made her follow him to his office to debrief her on her mission she had tomorrow morning. She argued of course but Komui ended it quickly when he brought up the fact that she had begged him just a few hours earlier to start going on missions again and to stop being the useless second care-taker for Allen. That was twenty minutes ago now.
About forty-five since Komui had made Johnny and Reever go back to work, and an hour and five minutes since he walked out of the infirmary.
'Ugh! I should have made the old fag let me see him before I left!'
"I got to admit I thought you loved him but I never thought you'd say it."
'Goddammit! He heard that?' Kanda turned so he could see Lavi close and put down his book in the corner of his eye. "Che."
"Plus the fact that you called Allen and the babies your family. That was so cute-"
"Shut up. You weren't supposed to hear that…"
Lavi smiled to himself, it was the first time he had spoken since talking to the head nurse (other than che at least).
"It's kind of neat too. Two people who both never got to experience family, found one with each other."
'Wait—What did Lavi just say?' "What are you talking about baka-usagi?"
"Eh? You didn't know that, you two love each other-" Kanda didn't bother to explain that it was only he who had confessed his love- "yet you didn't know he was abandoned by his parents at birth? I mean well nobody at the order has much of a family -"
It was then when Kanda cut Lavi out. He knew that Allen didn't have a family, it seemed to be a curse all exorcists had actually, well expect lucky Lenalee, though with such the mad sister complex Komui had he wondered about if the word 'lucky' was fitting. But Lavi had said 'never'… And 'abandoned' which was almost worse than orphaned, which is what he assumed Allen's case was… 'Why would any sane person abandon baby Allen? …No one would… If that's the case his parents must've been insane… I wonder if that is hereditary, and if that is true than- oh god, am I going to father three insane children?!'
Kanda realized his thoughts had gone completely off course. Clearly, he figured, in his current state his mind wasn't all that right. He turned back to Lavi's one-sided conversation.
"—Well he did have Mana I guess-"
"Mana? Who's Mana?"
"He was Allen's adoptive father, he raised him before his master, Cross, found him."
"What happened to Mana? And who is Cross?"
Lavi hesitated, he should not be just blurting this out, he knew but he was a Bookman. Kanda was… Kanda was Allen's family… Allen would want him to know, wouldn't he?
"Well Mana… The Earl turned him into an akuma, and Mana begged Allen to kill him. It is why Allen has the cursed eye, the scar, and the white features. I think Mana's death killed his wish to have a family again-"
"Yuu Kanda?" A young nurse peaked out of the door to the infirmary, Kanda recognized as Miss Klein, the girl he ran into before.
"Yes?" Kanda got excited and stood up, completely forgetting the unfinished conversation with Lavi.
"Mr. Walker is asking for you."
Black Order, Infirmary, 9:09pm
"Allen?"
"…Yuu?"
Kanda walked into the boy's view, they were both finally face to face and neither could hid their soft smiles that formed when their eyes met. Kanda was the one who broke the contact first. He let his eyes wander, he was expecting it but it was still hard for him and his smile slowly vanish. Allen looked awful and on the verge of sleep. Allen's eyes were only half-open, his face was pale, and with the white bed-sheets he failed to stand out. It was as if he was almost transparent. Kanda didn't like it, he wanted the boy laying on his dark bed-spread where the boy's colouring would have a nice visible contrast. Not this weak one that made Allen look like he was fading from existence.
"Come here." Kanda let his anger with the pigment of the colours around him fade when he saw Allen's smile on his pink lips and the delicate outstretched arm.
Kanda placed both hands around the cool and pale hand, then he knelt down beside Allen.
"How are you feeling?" Kanda said softly as he caressed the pale arm. His own hand reached his lover's wrist and brought it to his cheek. Allen hummed at the warmth.
"Tired."
The Japanese was going to respond when the head nurse and a guy wearing a doctor's outfit came it. Kanda moved his and Allen's hands down and instead let his fingers intertwine with the other's.
"That is to be expected Mr. Walker," The head nurse calmly said,
"We ran some tests and we would like to inform you both that Allen's fall was a result of stress. I need you to understand that in your current condition, stress can cause serious damage. During this point in a pregnancy rest is an upmost importance. We would like to request that Allen stays here a few days so that he may rest under our watch and remain hydrated through an IV."
"I can do that… What about the babies?" Kanda heard Allen answer and was slightly taken off guard when he asked the doctor about the babies. 'Is he worried about them?' Kanda smiled just as the doctor answered,
"They are well, but we can't confirm anything until an ultrasound is performed," The doctor said when he saw Allen struggle to keep his heavy eyelids open, "But that can be done later, we will let you take a rest before coming back."
Kanda watched the two leave and then gave Allen a quick peck on his forehead as the boy lost the battle to stay awake.
~Komui~
The next day…
Black Order, Komui's Office, 10:13am
*Bringgg~~*
Komui looked at his telephone's caller ID and smiled upon quickly picking it up,
"It's nice to hear from you. I only left you a message for you to call me back last week." He skipped the greeting, knowing it had no use with his old friend. Komui listened to some speaking on the other end of the line before speaking again.
"Do you really care if that was sarcasm or not?" Komui responded but briefly stopped to hear a grumpy question,
"…"
"I wasn't going to, but something happened a few months ago-"
"…"
"I understand. That's why I didn't call beforehand but the incident has caused another-" Komui sighed, he was getting annoyed at these interruptions.
"…"
"Yes it involves them."
"…"
"I wouldn't call you if it wasn't serious-"
"…"
"I know, but I need you here."
"…"
This wasn't working, Komui was forced to use Plan B, and in the end he probably should have started with it.
"Goddammit; Allen's life is in danger!" Komui interrupted this time,
Silence.
"…Will I see you soon?"
A 'Yes' and a 'give me a week' was the answer that followed on other line, with a beep to signal the call being disconnected. Komui smiled again but it fell once he looked down at Tiedoll's report. He read the words, "He told me they want him" for the hundredth time and closed the folder.
~Allen~
Black Order, Infirmary, 10:29am
They first thing he noticed upon regaining consciousness was a warm hand around his own. He sat up and turned his head to look at the hand's owner. Allen smiled and gave the young sleeping man a quick peck. Kanda's head lay just next to their attached hands on the bed. A blanket hung from his shoulders over the old wooden chair. By the way the blanket loosely hung Allen could tell it must've been placed there after he fell asleep. Allen's guessed it was a nurse's doing.
Allen put his free hand over the samurai's soft blue locks. He let his fingers brush down to the end and proceeded to do it again. It was comforting. After a minutes Allen saw Kanda's eyelids slowly rise.
"You should've gone to the room to go to sleep. You'll have a sore neck from that position." Allen quietly said to the waking man. He wasn't mad, he just wanted to bug him.
"Che. You wouldn't let go of my hand."
"You know you're holding my hand." Allen softly answered and giggled at Kanda's faint blush. He wanted to say more but the doctor walked in at that moment wheeling a tray full of cords and medical equipment.
"Good morning to you both."
"Morning."
"I was hoping you'd be awake. How do you feel about an ultrasound to see your babies?"
Allen's face lite up, he turned to Kanda to see him facing Allen and smiling at him.
"I'll take that as a yes," the doctor grinned and pushed the tray next to the bed.
"I'll need you to lift your shirt to expose your abdomen for me Allen."
Allen's face dropped and he hesitated, he felt a squeeze around his hand and looked to Kanda again smiling at him. He felt at ease and smiled back before lifting his shirt. The doctor made no remark to the scars and only grabbed a small tube from the tray,
"This will be a little cold," Allen took a deep breath as the doctor spread the cold clear gel on his stomach, it shocked Allen but only for a second. The doctor placed another cold device on Allen. Gripping the handle he began to slowly push it over the gel across Allen's abdomen. The three men heard a disharmonized thumping.
"What's that?" Kanda spoke first,
"That…" The doctor moved the device to the right and the noise loudened, "is your babies' heartbeats. And this…" He pointed to a screen showing blurs of grey, black, and white. "is them."
Allen gasped,
"The blobs?"
"Yes, here is one…" He pointed, "Are you wanting to know the sexes?"
"Eh? Can we?"
The doctor grinned at Allen surprised expression.
"You see that blob there?" He pointed again, "She's your little girl, and over here," The doctor moved his hand to the right slightly, "is your other daughter, and then that one…" He moved his pointed finger over the last blob, "is your son."
Kanda looked to Allen's glazed eyes, watching as a tear threatened to fall.
"Looks as though my job is done. You have three healthy little ones." The doctor clasped Allen head after packing his things back on the tray.
"You, Allen Walker, have created an excellent home for them." The doctor said before leaving.
Allen sat frozen for a moment, 'I'm doing good? They're healthy?' and as if reading his mind, Kanda answered,
"You're doing amazing. You're going to be a great dad." Kanda said as he placed his two hands on opposite sides of Allen's head.
"You. Are. Amazing." He said before softly kissing the boy.
"Mr. Allen Mana Walker, I love you."
Allen blinked and kissing Kanda back…
"I love you too."
