My Boyfriend, the Greek God
Chapter 9-Secrets
Happy Thanksgiving! This is the chapter that we have all been waiting for... Drop me a comment if you enjoyed it, please?
Study Hall was quite boring as usual, but at least I was able to finish my never ending piles of homework. Percy wasn't faring much better, his eyes flitting back and forth to the clock as he silently counted-five minutes down and about forty-five more to go.
Not soon after, I noticed Will and Tracey sitting together in the back of the computer lab, trying to finish their first debate constructive speech or something of that sort.
Tracey began to nod after Will whispered something into her ear. He began to walk back to the main section of the classroom, right next to me and Percy.
I tucked my blonde hair behind my ear, and quickly proceeded to pretend that I was doing something proficient. I refused to let Will make fun of me 'staring into the empty space' again.
Surprisingly, Will wasn't coming for me. He reached over my desk and grabbed his physics textbook from his desk. It could have been my imagination, but I could have sworn that he looked right at Percy and gave him a scathing look. Percy looked calm enough-he merely gave Will one glance and nodded. I lowered my head to look at my Calculus textbook before either of the boys could notice that I was staring.
Will walked up front to Mr. Smith and said, "Is it okay for me to give this textbook back to Mr. Watson? I was borrowing it for a project." The teacher nodded and signed him out.
Not long after Will had walked out, Percy went up and signed himself out, too. This couldn't be a coincidence. I knew something was up. Will was a good student, he would never sign out during Study Hall if he could help it.
The curiosity was killing me; I hated not knowing things.
Walking up to the front, I, too, tried to sigh out.
"Miss Chase, I cannot allow more than two students checking out at the same time, what do you need?" Darn it.
Thinking fast, I put on an urgent face and leaned closer and whispered, "My period's here, I've got to go." Screw my dignity. Sometimes I'm too curious for my own good.
The poor young teacher's face grew red rather quickly as I bit my lip nervously, and he quickly scribbled me a note, "Go. If anyone asks, just say that you have a free pass from me. Go see the nurse if it is necessary."
I gave him a grateful look and nodded my thanks. I quickly pocketed the pass and walked steadily towards the locker rooms.
I didn't even reach the stairs when I heard the two familiar voices that belonged to my friends. They were definitely trying to keep their voices down by conversing in a hushed tone, but I knew I could still hear them well if I were just a bit closer.
Ducking my head, I went and hid into one of the many conveniently placed bathrooms around the school. Yeah, they could rat me out if I hid anywhere else, but I doubt they would give this place a second thought, much less actually checking for listeners.
After I settled, I braced myself against the white tiles and shamelessly began to eavesdrop. The two were acting odd against each other since the first day, and I wam adamant to find out what's wrong.
"...You can't do this to her," Will continued on whatever he was saying, frustration evident in his voice.
"Will, I can do whatever I want. Do not forget your place," Percy replied calmly, and I was taken aback by the absence of playfulness in his voice.
"I am not forgetting my place! My place is right beside Annabeth, and the rest of my friends. And I am definitely going to defend her if that's what you mean!" Will started to get louder, but he glanced around and quieted down.
Thankfully there were usually a minimal number of classes within hearing distance from the locker bay.
"You like her," Percy stated and I made a face to myself. Will would never, ever, stray away from his faith to Tracey.
"Yeah, of course. The same way I like Katie and Tracey and the whole lot. I knew her since before Camp Half Blood, and well, you." I could practically hear Will's hand gestures as he spoke. He always have a tendency to flail his arms around when speaking.
"You don't love her?" Percy sounded genuinely confused. A part of me was giddy that he cared about this at all, but the other part of me was seriously confused-why would they take a break from Study Hall just for this? To talk about me behind my back? Whilst I appreciated the 'concern on my wellbeing', couldn't they just have said whatever they needed to in front of my face?
"No, I don't," Will sighed, "You lot won't understand. Humans are capable more than just 'love' for affectionate gestures, man, there's this thing called friendship that you would still have to work on."
I cringed to Will's uneasy words. The terms that they were using to converse confused me, but not as much as how I came in to all of this.
"You're pretty bold for someone just helping his friend, Will Solace, even I am known as pretty easygoing around camp. Do not forget who I am, Solace."
Something was glowing a bit outside the bathroom door, but I could not afford to sneak a peek. The two have been wandering around the locker bay as they continued to speak, and they stood dangerously close to where I was hiding.
"The others are not as forgiving," Percy sighed. This conversation was seriously taking a eerie turn; I have never heard him speak like this. All happiness and carefreeness in his voice was gone.
"They are not," Will adopted a foreign, formal tone, giving me a grim feeling. "May I ask what you are doing here? Last time I saw you..."
"Yes, well, I know we haven't met since the Battle of Labyrinth. Remember how my father came up to aid with Typhoon during the Great War?"
A slight pause-I assume Will nodded to acknowledge him.
"Good. Well, I was holding the front back down... there..." A small hesitation, as if Percy was vigilantly choosing his words. "Well. I was successful. Because of that, my father gave me a small...break."
"Hmph. 'Small' break, huh? And how long is that?"
"If there are not any coming emergencies, then give or take a decade." Percy sounded annoyed at Will's interruption, but I could have cared less. This information was intriguing, but I suddenly felt as if I were out of the loop of some very, very salient things.
Will whistled, "That's one hell of a handsome award."
"Not really. I haven't taken a break in a long time."
"Sure." The two walked further, and I dared to peek out from the door. All I saw were their backs-nothing special, nothing out of ordinary.
"What are you actually doing here, though? You must have a lot more to finish in this 'short' break. You were complaining about your Roman side last time..."
I heard a grunt, probably from Percy, and I imagined that he gritted his teeth, "Damn it, Will, not here."
"Okay... I would offer you some ambrosia, but I didn't bring any. But really, don't you have better things to do?"
"...Are you trying to say something?" Percy bit back, icily.
It was weird, listening to the two talk. One minute they were old acquaintances looking back and talking about the 'good old times', and then the next minute they're fighting over something as boring as me, or whatever other conflicts they have between them.
"Yes, actually. I want to know why you are here, stalking Annabeth, who has nothing to do with our world, instead of being in Camp Half Blood or somewhere else of more importance."
"Why would I stay in Camp Half Blood?" he scoffed, "Dear Cousin D is the only one who would ever bother with them."
"Thalia Grace made you all promise that-"
"Oh, Grace. Brave kid, that one. She just made the major-"
"To claim their kids and build cabins for all minor deities too!" Will rebutted, but I was losing interest. If they would just cut to the chase. My mind was whirring 60 miles per second, but there was no way I could know what the truth was without understanding the context of their conversation.
"You personally have half bloods in your cabin! How could you, abandoning them, come here instead to flirt with someone else-what are you going to do? Sire another half blood, sentencing them to the same fate while you use rest of your break time horsing around?" Will shouted, but then shut up half way, as if he realized that he was stepping on some sort of an invisible line.
"Enough," Percy said after a while. "You are not to judge me. Your father, Apollo, has near seven times as many children as I do. Who are you to say anything?"
Will sighed, defeated, but he wasn't about to let it go yet. "So you aren't even going to try? You aren't even going to bother to keep it in your pants? I thought you were different from the others. Annabeth's still sixteen, you can't expect her to, you know. And even if you were to stay with her, for ten years, what's going to happen next, huh? Are you just going to walk out of her life after that?"
Percy was silent, but I was feeling horrified from Will's words. From what Will said, Perseus... fathered children? It's a prospect so utterly ridiculous and preposterous that I didn't even want to humor.
Silence fell after, and I could hear Will's harsh breathing. After a long silence, Percy whispered, "Samuel and Alyssa aren't mine."
"Excuse me?" Will asked incredulously. "You claimed them-I saw it! And Sam said, you visited-"
"They're Triton's."
"But you claimed them!" Will's tone was less accusative now. I breathed a sigh of relief-that boy could be extremely frightening when he wanted to.
"Yes. My half-brother, you see, he never claims his half-bloods. You can't very well expect me to leave the two in Hermes' Cabin after the pact. Father doesn't want trouble-and he couldn't help claim them because of the oath. The two are old enough to have my uncle up there throwing a fit, so well, that leaves me."
"Sam's not happy with you," Will said in a softer tone.
"I know. I don't expect him to. But the fact still stands that they aren't my responsibility. I am just being kind."
Will snorted. "In relative to the others?"
"Yes," Percy said curtly. No matter how thoroughly confused I was, the apparent thing now is that Percy does turn out to not fathering anyone, currently. That made everything less weird (and infinitely less awkward) in retrospect.
"Um, well, okay," Will was taken aback. "And Annabeth? What do you want with her?"
"Nothing. She is just an interesting mortal-"
"-That you like-"
"-and I want to try being a mortal." Percy said, unfazed by the other boy's interruption.
"Fine," Will said, "Just don't get in trouble. Don't play with Annabeth, I don't want her hurt again. And if anything happens, even your father won't stop me from coming after you."
"Such brave words. But I suppose, I can do that, I am after all, much older than you are."
"By like, three millenniums, but yeah." I can hear the amusement in his voice.
"Jackson, Solace, what are you doing in the halls?" I heard another much gruffer voice ring throughout the halls.
"Nothing sir," Percy said smoothly as I heard him snap clearly, and felt as if a wave of nebulous white mist just washed over me.
"We were just taking stuff out from our lockers. We're working on a project together and Mr. Smith sent us down here to grab our books."
"Okay, but both of you should hurry up," the teacher said and I heard him shuffle away.
I blinked as confusion settled in. What was I doing here again? Crouching low against the bathroom's white tiled walls... I glanced at the watch on my wrist-5th period. I better get back to my Study Hall before something happens.
