The following morning had come only Levine was looking forward to it. The five met at a resteraunt. Nobody wanted to give the first word on anything, so for the first few minutes everybody stared at their menus awkwardly.
Levine was the first to speak, "Well thank you for joining me, it really means a lot to have all of you in the same room together."
Malcolm piped in, "Means a lot to you, not to us. This is a giant mistake and you know it.
Satler nodded, "I'm going to tell you as it is, I'm not interested, Malcolm's not interested, nobody here has any interest in this ridiculous idea."
Levine paused, "You sure, none of you would be interested in this?
He looked to Malcolm, "Not a chance, the only reason I called you was cause' Sarah's discoveries. If not for her I wouldn't be in Canada right now."
"Same." Thorne muttered.
Sattler just shook no, "I've already given my no."
Levine slumped back in the chair, "I figured you guys would feel that way but I want to point out something. We can make a fortune off of this place, more money then any of you know what to do with."
"But at what cost?" Malcolm responded, "Five of us go, two return. The math doesn't support it. If we use those odds, we've got a forty percent chance of even making it off the damn island, it's not even fifty-fifty! That's being generous. Raptors don't care about that, if they can get four of us they will."
Thorne added, "And how do you intend to make a dime off of monsters that people are afraid of?"
Levine responded, "Actually, people are afraid of the island, not the animals on it. The animals are worth a fortune."
Sattler argued, "I would dissagree, anybody that's been on the island will absolutely be afraid of them, I'm afraid of them, Malcolm's got to have a phobia of the raptors after his experience! They're terrifying and should be left alone."
Levine paused and tapped the table for a moment, "Ok, I understand but we can use them."
Sattler gave a blank stare, "Use them? You want to open another park? That's just stupid!"
Levine shook no, "No Dr. Sattler, I don't want to open a park. I want to research off of them. I want to trap a few of them, and study the live samples."
Sattler paused, "And then what."
Levine began to relax in the chair, "We take the information we get off the creature and use it in your dig sites."
Sattler grew silent, "What do the two have to do with one another?"
Levine leaned forward, "We create the true theories. We trap a raptor and take it with us. Then we study it, find out what we can. Once that's done we send your dig team across the map and find "evidence" to prove what we've found and you'll become one of the most recognized and respected Palentologists on earth!"
Sattler responded, "How do you know that'll work?"
"Simple," Levine grew a smirk, "You create the theorize based off the real thing. In other words, you can't be wrong. Everything you say about the beast will be one hundred percent correct, cause you're using the real thing as a reference. So no one will be able to challenge your "theories" cause any evidence in the ground will support it. All you have to do is find something to help "start" the idea. After that you just sit back and get all the recognition for the idea. Think about it, you and Mr. Grant can revolutionize the field of paleontology, you'll be the most recognized and note worthy scientists in the field!"
Thorne grew tired of waiting, "That all sounds fine and good but why do I care, why does Malcolm care? How does this apply to us?"
"Easy, Mr. Grant and Mrs. Sattler here will get the money and we'll get it form them."
"How?"
"Well if they want some information from our raptor, then they'll have to pay us. So Sattler and Grant keep half the money for themselves and the rest goes to us. You guys have the easy job, just study a snarling beast behind a cage and pick up your check. It couldn't be easier money!"
"What if the thing escapes? I don't want to be studying the damn thing's digestive track, thank you."
"That won't happen. I'll make sure it can't escape."
Malcolm held a hand up, "How do we get it?"
"What you mean?" Levine grew puzzled then waved a hand up in down to signify to be quiet, "…and that's why Godzilla will always be the King of the Monsters, ah you must be our waiter."
A man appeared and asked, "Hi, that's right, my name is Roger and I'll be your waiter this evening." he handed out cups and began to fill them with water. He went around to all of them and got their orders and left. They waited for him to bring the food before continuing.
Levine continued, "How do we catch it?"
Malcolm responded, "Yes, animals don't just get trapped, how do would that happen?"
"We can catch it with traditional means." Levine answered, "All we need to start this thing is one of them, so I doubt we'll be on the island much. Maybe one or two weeks tops."
"A lot can happen in that much time." Sattler said.
"True but a lot of good can come out of that time too."
"And bad."
"Let me just cut to the chase then, you've heard my plan, what do you think?"
Malcolm muttered, "The risk is still pretty heavy."
Sattler answered, "Well, I think we need time to consider it.
Thorne followed, "It could work but I don't know."
Levine waited for Grant but he said nothing, "I've heard form everyone in the room, but Dr. Grant, I haven't heard anything from you. What do you think?"
Grant paused and took a deep breathe, "I agree that this has some significant draw backs and risks. I also think that it would be a risky thing to do even after the creatures been caught. With that said, I've been considering Sattler and my current financial issue and what the gentlemen from the museum told me. That we needed to have something better to offer them to keep them interested. I hate to admit it, but your plan would deliver exactly what they asked for. The pawns are set, and I think this really could work. So."
Levine glowed from the response, "So you will…" The room looked to Grant, Sattler specifically stared strongly to wait his answer. Grant was silent and the only thing he did was mess with his shirt sleeve for a moment.
Then, he answered, "I'm in."
Sattler nearly leapt out of the chair, "What! You're in?"
"Grant my friend you've made a profitable choice I assure you!" Levine said with smile.
"Why Alan, you'll die there!"
"Ellie, I have given this more thought then I ever thought I would. We have nothing, the museum isn't interested in anything we have, the money we grinded from the Albertosaur is the last significant thing we've gotten since the days we were funded by John Hammond. We've got nothing. I say we take the chance and go for it."
Malcolm then responded, "Grant you realize the likelihood of surviving the island? The odds aren't in your favor."
Grant looked at Malcolm, "There's no other option, low odds are better than none."
Sattler then muttered, "I won't let you go Alan."
Grant responded, "I've made up my mind on this Ellie."
Sattler sank into her seat, "Then I'm going to. I won't let you go to that god forsaken place alone with this nutball. No chance in hell."
Levine layed back, "So Dr. Grant and Dr. Sattler are coming, Thorne? Malcolm?"
Thorne was silent for a moment, "I'll tell you what Levine, if you actually show me how you plan to catch and control one of them, I'll accept the proposal."
"Malcolm?"
Malcolm shook no, "I'm sorry Levine, but this whole thing is doomed to fail. I can't believe you have gotten these three to accept but I'm done with the place."
"Oh really, can I ask you something?" Levine asked.
Malcolm looked up at Levine, "I suppose."
"What did Sarah's letter say?"
"It said that they had a dead rap…"
"A dead what? I'm afraid I didn't catch that."
"A… raptor."
"In Africa? Interesting."
"In Africa… a raptor in Africa…"
"So what your saying is there's one there?" Malcolm just nodded, "So there's more?"
Malcolm snapped up, "Never said that!"
"Is there a possibility?"
"Well, I guess."
"You guess, what's the likelihood Mr. Mathematician?"
Malcolm just sat quiet as everyone stared at him, "Well, if there's one… the likelihood there's more is…"
"Yes."
"Well there's some factors to keep in mind, food supply, origins, nesting options…"
"A number Malcolm! A number!"
"It borders guaranteed."
"So, what if I changed our destination to Africa, where as you stated, it's almost guaranteed to have some."
Ellie piped up, "But how many?"
Malcolm just paused.
Ellie grabbed him, "How many?"
Malcolm shook his head, "Well, they haven't been seen otherwise, and had to have gotten there some unusual way…"
Ellie asked one more time, "How many?"
Malcolm muttered, "I wouldn't expect more than five."
"Then we have a chance to get the first grabs at them. Hell if this doesn't work, we can report a dinosaur living in Africa! Imagine what publicity we could pull from that sort of story?"
Malcolm began to shake yes, "Then it would work anyway…"
Levine smirked, "In other words, the probability of success just went up?"
Malcolm nodded, "exponentially."
Levine sat comfortably in the chair, "So in other words, this isn't doomed to fail?" Malcolm shook no. "So Dr. Malcolm, I'll ask you again, interested?"
Malcolm looked up, " Two weeks, if we find nothing, I'm out, forever."
