Chapter ten: Don't do This

Matt paced the room as he waited for Gabby. She must have already been gone for over an hour. So many emotions filled his body as he thought of how he found her limp body pressed into the steering wheel of his truck, he thought about her frail form in his arms as he carried away and placed her on the gunnery. He also thought about how different today could have gone if she hadn't opened her beautiful brown eyes. A shiver of anger rose through him and his face tighten at the thought of even the possibility of losing Gabby. He knew that his focus should be on just Gabby, but as he stood there in the white hospital room with his fist clenched, he thought of the revenge that he would have on the responsible person that but her here.

As if on cue, his cell phone rang from his front pocket of his jeans. It took him a moment to snap back into reality, he reached in and took out the ringing phone. He didn't even bothering looking at the caller ID, he already knew who was on the other end. "What did you find?" he asked.

"How is Gabby?" Severide asked before answering Matt questions.

"She is with the doctors right now; they are running some sort of test. I think that she is going to be okay," Matt spoke in a softer tone as he pinched the bridge of his nose and then ran his fingers through his blonde short hair.

"I'm glad that she is okay."

"Me too," Matt paused before speaking again. "What did you find out?" Matt asked again.

Severide paused a moment and then cleared his throat, Matt could tell that he was trying to hold back something. "Spit it out Severide," he raised his voice slightly.

"I went and took a look at your truck, and you were right. The break line was cut in half and there is no way that could have been caused by the accident."

"How fast can you get here?"

"I'm already on my way; I should be there in a ten minutes or so."

"Good," Matt said and then hung up the phone. He put the phone back in his pocket as stone cold hatred pulsated through him. This was intentional, this was directed at him and now he knew it was true. He wanted to yell, scream, and or punch something. His back was turned to the door; he hadn't noticed the figure standing in the doorway until his voice made he known.

"Hey man," the familiar voice called out, causing Matt to turn and find Mills standing in the doorway. He then quickly looked around the room in search of Gabby.

Matt could see that he wasn't the person Mills was intending on seeing, "She is getting some test done," Matt explained.

"Oh," Mills replied with a nod of his head. "How is she doing?"

"As well as can be expected. Are you going to be around awhile?" Matt asked almost hating himself for what he was about to ask, but he had to handle this now. He had to end this now. He knew that if there was a next time, things could end a hell of a lot worse, today was proof of that.

"I was going to check in on Gabby and then home. Do you need something?"

"I need to run out real quick, it shouldn't be to long. Would you mind hanging out with Gabby until I get back? I just don't want her to be alone."

"Yeah, no worries," Peter said understanding that Casey was trusting him with the most important person in his life. "We are family anything you need, I'm here for you."

"Thanks," Matt gave a nod of his own.

"What do you want me to tell Gabby when she comes back?"

"Tell her I had a couple of errands to run and I'll be back as soon as I can." Matt shook Peter's hand and then left. He kept telling himself that he was doing the right thing, he was protecting her. When he made it outside of the hospital, he quickly hailed a cab. As he climbed in, the driver asked him where he wanted to go. Matt didn't hesitate as he gave the driver the address.

Tears slowly ran down Gabby's cheeks as the doctors rolled her back to her room. So many emotions flooded her body as she thought about what could have happened today. So many things could have been taken away from her, things that she had no idea was even a possibility.

Her heart raced as saw the door to the room in which Matt was waiting for her. Her only thought was on him and what he would think. She took a deep breath as the doctors pushed her through the open door, but what she saw sent her into a state of confusion. "Hey Peter Mills"

"Hey Gabby," he answered with a wide smile. "You look good."

"You are a horrible lair," she smiled back, but slightly looked around the room. Maybe her eyes were playing tricks on her and she overlooked the person she longed to see the most. "Where is Matt?"

"He said that he had to step out to take care of a few things. He also said that he would be back as soon as possible."

"He did?" She said taking in a deep breath.

Peter opened his mouth to say something, but was silenced by Severide quickly entering the room. A look of panic displayed across his strong features.

"Where is Matt?" he asked just as quick as he walked in.

"He left," Gabby replied with a raised eyebrow. She could tell by the look on Kelly's face that something was going on. "What is going on?"

"When did he leave?" Severide asked like he didn't hear Gabby.

"Not long ago," Mills replied.

"Damn it! I knew that I shouldn't have told him over the phone!" Severide yelled to himself.

"What shouldn't you have told me? What the hell is going on?" Gabby yelled drawing both of the men's attention. Anger was beginning to take over her emotionally. She needed to know what was going on around her. She wasn't a child, she didn't need people keeping the truth from her.

"Gabby…" Severide began to say, but he was cut off by the look and sound of Gabby's voice.

"Don't you dare fucking lie to me! What the hell is going on and where is my fiancée?"

"It wasn't an accident" Severide spoke in a low tone; he knew that Matt didn't tell Gabby about their pervious conversation.

"What do you mean?"

"I checked the break line of the truck, it was cut," he explained moving closer to Gabby.

Once the words left Kelly's mouth, Gabby's heart stopped beating and the warmth of her body turned into ice. She knew what Matt was going to do and she also knew that whatever was going to happen wouldn't be the end of it. They would seek revenge against Matt and the cycle would just continue until one or both of them were dead. She needed Matt now more then ever, she couldn't do this alone.

"Kelly give me your phone," Gabby shouted shoving her open palm out. A look of hesitation glazed over him, "Now!" Gabby shouted even louder, causing Severide quickly grab his phone and it to her.

Without thinking, she dialed Matt's number as fast as possible. The phone rang twice before going to voicemail. She listened to his greeting, it felt like an eternity before the peep rang through her ears, letting her know that it was now her turn to leave a message.

"Matt whatever you are planning on doing, I need to stop." She took in a deep breath, she wasn't planning on telling him the news this way, but right now she needed him here with her, she needed him safe. "I need you here with me. Our baby needs you here with us."
