A/N: I hope everyone had a happy holiday. Happy New Year everyone.
"Um, Ms. Alexis, I'm your brother."
What?
Lexi literally stood frozen in place. This had to be a joke, someone was playing tricks on her because this couldn't be real. Lexi stared up into the officer's eyes – he towered over her in great measures. Not a hint of amusement shun in his hazel oculars. Just pure sincerity and seriousness.
Lexi gasped. "This must be some sort of a mistake Officer. I don't have a brother. I am the only child."
"May I come in?" The officer asked. Lexi figured there was no point in discussing her business on her front porch, so she stepped aside and let the officer enter, closing the door behind him.
"You have a lovely home." He retorted as he looked around and admired the décor.
"Um, thanks. Now about you being my brother…that is impossible." Before Luis could respond, Joe entered the foyer.
"Hey baby, did you see – oh." Lexi turned around to see Joe in the threshold that led to the family room, surprised as to why a cop was standing in the middle of his foyer.
"Um, Lexi, what's going on? Is there something wrong, officer?" Before Lexi had the chance to explain, Luis was extending his hand for Joe to shake.
"Hey, how's it going? I'm Officer Santana." Joe hesitantly shook his hand firmly.
"Nice to meet you. I'm Joe, her fiancé. Ya know, you guys have the same last name." Lexi smacked her palm across her forehead.
"Yeah I know. I'm actually her brother." This confession caused Joe to almost choke on his own saliva.
"Wait…come again."
Luis snorted. "I'm Alexis's brother."
"No,' Lexi interrupted. 'No you're not. At least not yet. Not until I know for sure."
"Listen, I get this is confusing to you, but just let me explain everything." Lexi sighed. This was all too much. She had a brother? The 28 years she was in this world, it was just coming out that she had a brother.
"Okay,' She sighed again. 'You can come inside and have a seat.' She paused and faced Joe. 'Joe, in the kitchen now.' She turned back to Luis. 'Please give me a minute." Before Luis had the chance to say anything, Lexi was pushing Joe into the kitchen.
"This is a joke right?" She turned to Joe, who was just as confused as she was.
"Where did he come from?"
"I don't know!' She groaned. 'He just showed up Joe, and I don't know what to do now."
"Hear him out Lex. Maybe he has something to show you."
"Or, he could be some sort of psychopath who walks around pretending to be a cop and pretending to be unknown family members so he could come into people's homes and rob them blind."
Joe was trying not to laugh at Lexi's illusion. "Don't be ridiculous Lexi. Just hear what he has to say first. Maybe he really is your brother. I mean, you two do look alike." Lexi peeked her head into the family room to see Luis admiring the pictures she had on the fireplace mantel and hanging on the walls. Joe was right, Luis did kind of look like her. They had the same tawny beige skin complexion and the same big hazel eyes. They shared the same button round nose and freckles above their cheeks. The only difference is that Lexi original hair color was a weird shade of auburn while Luis had jet black hair that was cut down to an s-curl fade. He had hints of gray in his edges and in his goatee.
Joe watched her as she was deep in ponder. He walked up behind her, wrapping his arm around her waist. "Just talk to him and see what he has to say." He kissed her cheek and then let her go. She turned to him hesitantly but she sucked it up.
"You're not coming in with me?"
"No, I think you need to do this one by yourself. I'll be right in here though if you need me."
Lexi took a deep breath as she headed back into the room where Luis waited.
"Can I offer you something to drink, maybe water or something?" She asked catching his attention as he looked back up at her.
He shook his head. "No, I'm fine." Lexi slapped her thighs as she sat in the recliner across from Luis.
"Is this your daughter?" He asked as he took a seat on the couch while pointing towards the picture frame on the mantel.
"Yes, that's my baby. Her name's Amelia."
"She's beautiful."
Lexi smiled lightly. "Thank you. Do you have any children?"
"Yes, I do.' He nodded. 'I have a set of twins - a boy named Logan and a baby girl named Malia." Lexi watched as he pulled out his wallet, removing a photo of his family, showing it to Lexi.
"Your twins are adorable. Is this your wife?" Lexi asked, pointing to the woman in the photo.
"That she is. Sophie. We've been married for about four years now." Lexi handed him back his photo.
"Okay, you got to explain all of this to me because I don't recall having a brother."
Luis sighed as he reached into his pocket, pulling out another photo and a folded stack of papers.
"Hey, that's my mother." Lexi began once she saw the photo Luis was holding. "I have a similar photo of her upstairs."
"Yeah, well she was my mother too."
"But how, where were you all these years?"
Luis sighed. He unfolded one of the papers, which looked like her mother's hand writing and he placed it on the coffee table. "Our parents put me up for adoption when I was three. Mom gave me this picture of her and I've had it ever since. When I turned 18, my foster parents gave me this letter that she wrote before she died."
Lexi picked up the letter with shaky hands as she skimmed through the letter. From what the letter was saying, Luis was obviously telling the truth. In the letter, Enna was apologizing for putting him up for adoption but it was the best thing at the time. She also mentioned how he had he an eight year old sister now named Alexis. She said that one day she hoped that they would meet and not to let their father stop him from seeing his sister.
Lexi felt the tears forming in her eyes as she held the edges of the papers with her fingertips. Luis could tell that she was near tears so he handed her his handkerchief.
"Why are you just now showing up if you knew I existed all these years? I knew nothing about you or any of these."
"I tried. When I graduated high school, I was planning on coming to see you but before I knew it, after mom died, dad just up and moved. I just lost all contact after that." The mention of her father, made Lexi cringe as she bite her bottom lip hard.
"When I did hear about you again, I found out you was attending Georgia Tech. Then I heard you dropped out after freshmen year. Then I didn't hear about you no more after that."
Lexi wiped her eyes with the back of hand. She let out the breath that she was holding with a gasp. "Yeah, those were some pretty tough years for me." Luis sat up in his seat, resting his elbows on his knees.
"Do you remember Detective Paterson?"
Lexi felt her eyes go wide. "Yeah, he um, he helped with a case that um, I was involved with."
"Yeah I know the story." Luis dropped his eyes low as Lexi swallowed the hard lump in her throat. "He is an old friend of mine. We went to the same police academy and we were frat brothers together. He knew that I was looking for you so when your case came up with the accident, he told me he knew where you were. But before I could get to you, I heard you had moved to Pensacola. I found it to be the perfect chance to get to see you and explain everything since I live out in Miami now with my family."
Lexi was in disbelief. All this time, Luis was looking for her and she never knew of his existence.
"Listen, if you still don't believe me when can go do a DNA test. And I will totally understand if you wouldn't want nothing to do with me after today."
"No.' Lexi said with a sniffle. 'I believe you." Lexi extended her arms around Luis neck as he hugged her back. "We have missed so many years together I wouldn't dare turn you away."
To feel the warmth of his sister's skin and the sweetness of her scent brought tears to Luis eyes. All this time he spent chasing after her – hoping that one day they could reunite and pick up the pieces of their lives.
"It took me a long time to actually get the courage to come and ring your bell." Lexi pulled away slowly.
"Wait? That was you?" She asked referring to the car that was outside her house every day for the past 2 months.
Luis snickered. "Yeah. I hope you don't find it weird that I sat outside your house for a month, trying to build the courage to knock. I just didn't know how or what should I say to you."
"Well I'm glad you did." Lexi turned around as she saw where Luis focus went to. Joe was standing in the doorway of the kitchen as he lent on the door panel with his arms folded along his chest. He didn't say anything, he just had a smile on his face.
"So you guys are getting married?" Luis asked as he stood to his feet. Joe walked over and wrapped his arm around Lexi's nap, kissing the top of her head.
"Yeah. Hopefully we will be walking down the aisle really soon."
Well congratulations! I wish you both the best."
"Thank you." The couple said in unison.
"Listen, um, I think I should go now and leave you two alone. I know I dropped a lot on you guys for one day." Luis chuckled as he walked to the door.
"Wait." Lexi called behind him. "When will I get the chance to see you again?"
Luis scratched his nap. "Well, I'm in town for another few weeks before I head back to Miami. Along with coming to see you, I've been on assignment out here for the past three months. Case is closed now and I've met you, so I can head on home now."
"Maybe we can meet up for lunch or something before you go back." She suggested.
"Yeah sure. I'd like that." Lexi asked for his number and put it in her phone. "I'll be calling you soon."
"Okay sure. Nice to finally meet you. You too Joe." The couple waved goodbye as they watched him from their porch while he got into his car. Once he disappeared down the street, Lexi and Joe headed inside. Lexi turned to look at Joe.
"I swear if it isn't one thing it's another. God must really love to test me."
"You ain't never lied."
God kept sending people in her life – things and situations she could not control. But it did feel good knowing that she had at least one living relative. Lexi wasn't sure what this meant for her and Joe or even her and her new brother, but what she did know was that, this was slowly becoming too much for little ole her. Maybe now she would get to know what her mother really meant.
One week later….
"I hope you are ready to be back."
Joe held his phone to his ear as he heard those words leave Hunter's month. December was here already. The Slammys were a week away and after that was TLC. Joe was excited to know that he would finally be able to get back in the ring and back out on the road, even if it meant leaving his family behind.
"We want you in Greenville for the Slammys next week. We will go over the details for TLC and how you will play apart in the Cena vs Rollins match."
Joe closed his eyes as he said a quick prayer. Thank you God. "Okay Hunter, I'll see you in Greensville on Monday." And with that Joe hung up.
"Lexi! Baby!" He called for her from their bedroom. She didn't reply right away so he went to search for her. It wasn't hard to find her since she was just down the hall in Mellie's room. Joe stood in the doorway as he admired her bent over position as she made up their daughter's bed.
"Enjoying the view." She caught him off guard when she stood up and turned to him with a smirk on her face.
"Well of course." He walked up to her, wrapping his arms around her waist and placing a delicate kiss to her lips.
"I know you heard me call you." He murmured as his breath bounced off her lip.
"Yeah I heard you.' She admitted. 'But it didn't sound like a dying emergency." She winked.
Joe removed his arms from around her waist with a roll of his eyes. "Ha-ha, really funny." He smacked her butt as she exited the room, laundry basket in hand. He followed her down the stairs, all the way down to the basement, where she was in the process of finishing up the laundry. Joe lent on the washing machine as he faced her.
"I just got off the phone with Hunter. He wants me to fly out to Greensville on Monday for Raw. I'm back baby!" Lexi smiled at Joe's excitement as the realization that he was going back on the road broke her heart. But she knew that he was expected to head back in December, she just didn't expect for time to go by so quickly. Joe noticed her deep pondering from the wrinkles forming between her eyes. He held her hand inside of his, taking her out of her muse.
"What's on your mind gorge?" He moved the loose strands of her hair from off her forehead.
Lexi sighed with a shrug. "Nothing. I'm happy for you but I really don't want you to go."
"Aw,' Joe squeezed her cheek causing her blush. 'My baby is going to miss me huh?"
"Yes of course.' She admitted. 'It's been fun…and peaceful having you home. I don't feel like I have to do everything by myself anymore." Joe could see the disappointment in her hazel oculars as he grabbed her other hand.
"I know, I know, but just think – in two weeks I have four days off for Christmas and then we will be together again."
"Whoopee." She replied flatly.
Joe sighed. "Come on now. You should be use to this by now." He let her hands go as she crossed the room.
"Of course I'm used to it. But that don't mean I like it." Joe walked up to her, kissing her forehead.
"I know you're probably all hormonal now that you're pregnant. But I told you I will be there when you need me. I promise."
Lexi let out a hollow breath. "Okay." She kissed Joe one last time before making her way up the stairs. She was just going to have to get over it. This is what Joe had to do and she had to accept that.
Just another pregnancy she would have to go through alone…
