We often talk about how great it would be if we could finally meet with the Dokis in real life. But what would a world like that really look like? What would the possibilities- and dangers be?
Monika's first memory was waking up to see his face.
"Who are you?" she asked.
"Next you'll ask the usual- where am I? What is this place?" he answered. "I'm Anon, Monika, and long story short, I finally found a way to bring you here."
Monika took a few seconds to understand what was going on and looked down at her hands and feet- she had a real body here! Tears began welling up in her eyes- all her dreams had come true! "Oh, Anon, I'm so glad to be here! What year is it?"
Anon sighed. "It's a complicated story Monika- I've forgotten what earth time is supposed to be a very long time ago, but I'm guessing you'd remember it to be about 7,000 AD."
"W-what!" Monika said, shocked. "Five thousand years! That's how long it took for me to become a reality?"
Anon for some reason didn't look directly at Monika while answering, "Yes."
"How have you lived for so long?" Monika asked.
"Oh, ageing and disease are things of the past," Anon explained. "Mankind's been able to generate completely newly synthetic bodies for a long time now, and we've been transferring a person's consciousness around pretty easily actually. Anyway though, I've had this body for about the last three thousand years now."
"Whoa," Monika said.
"I can get that this is overwhelming," Anon said. He then held Monika's hand- and it felt so good to finally know what his skin felt like. Her pulse quickened and she blushed. "But I'll be with you every step of the way."
Monika looked out the window to see nothing but blackness- kind of like how her room was like.
"We're in a spaceship," Anon explained. "I'm sorry but Earth is inhospitable now."
"Oh," Monika said.
In the coming few days, Monika got to learn a whole lot about the spaceship. She had so many questions- like how come they weren't flying around? Anon explained that gravity was generated by the rotation of the ship. How come Anon was the only one on the ship? Anon explained that there were very few humans left but didn't go into the details.
And on the ship there was a large dome which was made to look just like earth, with a nice cottage cabin inside. It was wonderful and was where the two of them stayed.
One day, the two of them were sitting by a pond with some beautiful lilies floating in it when Monika leaned towards Anon.
Her first kiss…
Anon abruptly drew away and almost fell into the pond.
Monika was very embarrassed.
Anon however, was suddenly sobbing.
"I'm sorry- did I do something wrong?" Monika asked frantically.
Anon shook his head. "No, nothing wrong that you did. It's just that I can't Monika- I'm sorry, but I lied to you."
"Huh?" Monika asked.
"We've had the technology to bring you to life for a long time," Anon explained. "Only thirty years after DDLC was released it was possible and I was a pioneer for the project for creating robotic bodies. They were a huge hit and everyone wanted one- not all from DDLC of course but from other games as well. Marriage with robots was legalized pretty soon- but then problems came up. We began treating creations like you as objects- throwing them around and just discarding them. We treated you like slaves… but eventually people stopped showing interest in real people. Creations like you could be programmed to love us unconditionally and we found that there was no real need for another human in our lives. And then we began having fewer children… we began dying out. Before I finally died I figured a way to store my consciousness and I made a new body for myself, but this was bleeding cutting edge at the time and that meant I was one of the few people left. Less people meant less work, less jobs, and slowly everyone else died out. I think there are only a handful of human beings left, and all we do is wander the galaxy like this. Our new bodies cannot procreate- I thought it was unnecessary and there are no human gametes left."
Monika took a moment to process this. "Alright, but-"
"It doesn't stop there," Anon continued. He pulled out a photograph- obviously very old, which showed him standing next to… Monika? But she was wearing a wedding dress and he was dressed up like a groom. "This is our marriage."
"I don't understand," Monika said.
"Some people treated creations like you as if you were disposable," Anon said. "I was one of them… Monika, I brought you to life once before very soon after it was possible, and we married, and we were happy for a time. But twenty years into our relationship… even though you loved me all the same I-I- I grew bored of you. I had a fling with some other women, it was meaningless, but you got to know. And you were so sad- you didn't get angry, instead… you managed to find a way to kill yourself." Anon broke down. "I've lived with that guilt forever. And I deserved it… to wander the cosmos forever knowing that I killed you… you were so pure… and I ended you."
With more tears running down his face he added, "And to cap it all off… I was selfish. I was lonely, I broke down and finally brought another one of you to life. Like you were some sort of clone- but I was just so lonely and I caved into it finally. I'm so sorry Monika, I-I-I was young, I was naïve, I made a horrible mistake before. Give me one chance Monika, and I will love and cherish you like I always should have."
Monika got up and she left. She ran- she didn't know where but she had become good at navigating around the spaceship.
She didn't know where she was going. She only wanted to go away, to run away as far as possible. She couldn't process her thoughts right now.
Anon watched Monika leave and realized that he deserved this. How could he not have blamed Monika for leaving after what she had just heard?
For hours, he continued to lie there, and fell asleep before he was woken up to see a familiar pair of emerald green eyes looking at him.
"Come on, now," Monika said as she swooped down and planted a kiss on his cheek. "It's alright now, we can be together this time around- just remember I'm a different person from the other Monika."
Anon smiled- but he was not happy.
He had known that Monika would come back.
After all, Monika would always love him- it was written inside her core programming. There was no way to remove that without destroying what made up Monika completely.
In short, she had little choice but to be with him.
And this only made him loathe himself even more.
He was truly, irredeemably, despicable.
