Remember when I told you the angst was coming? Well, it's here.
Mid April meant that the snow had finally melted and the temperature was finally something everyone could live with. Paige was back in California for meetings to check on the progress her project managers had made and Emily was holding down the fort back at home. Spencer had promised both women that she would swing by when she could and keep tabs on Emily with the added benefit of her helping with the kids. Emily was nearing the point where she had agreed to go on early maternity leave and she was trying to get as much done as she could before hand. While she had slowed down at work, she was still trying to make the house as ready as she could for when she honestly wasn't going to be allowed to get out of bed. Paige had planned it so that she would be back in town the day Emily's leave began so that she could take on the lion's share of the household responsibilities and could handle taking the kids to and from school.
Paige was set to return Sunday night so Spencer had offered to spend that weekend at the house with Emily so that someone was around to go get Paige from the airport and just in general lend a hand. Spencer offered to cook Friday night so that Emily could unwind from work and rest. The kids were playing something upstairs that involved a pillow fort and so for the most part the house was remarkably quiet. After dinner Emily bathed the kids and got them settled into bed while Spencer cleaned up downstairs. When Emily returned to the living room, she tried to get comfortable on the couch, but couldn't find a position that didn't hurt her back.
"You ok there Em?" Emily altered rubbing her back and her belly, not sure which was causing her discomfort.
"I just can't get comfortable, my back is killing me. Can you grab me the body pillow from upstairs?" Spencer eyed her friend cautiously before nodding. "Sure Em, I'll be back." Spencer went and grabbed the pillow and after checking to see that both kids were asleep she returned to the living room to find Emily still rubbing her back.
"Em are you sure you don't want me to call you OB?" Emily was about to answer and say that she was sure it was just extra pressure from having two babies fighting for space, but something stopped her; something very painful stopped her. Spencer watched all the color drain from Emily's face as she abandoned rubbing her back and wrapped both arms around her abdomen, trying all the while not to audibly cry out in pain. Spencer knelt next her friend and tried to understand in a hurry what it was that was happening.
"Em I know whatever pain you just felt was bad so just squeeze my hand if you want me to call the doctor." Emily almost broke Spencer's hand she squeezed so hard. Spencer ran to grab her phone from the kitchen only to be called back by Emily who had never sounded so scared in all her life. Spencer made it back to the couch in just enough time for Emily to hold up her hand that had a noticeable amount of blood on it.
"Oh fuck." Spencer could only guess what was happening and even if she was wrong, this wasn't good and she needed to get Emily to the hospital immediately. She quickly grabbed the nearest blanket and handed it to Emily.
"I know this won't help much, but put this between your legs and keep it there. Do not move from this spot ok, let me go get the kids."
"They'll be scared if they wake up to this."
"I'm not leaving them in the house alone. I'll pay for their therapy." Was all Spencer said as she sprinted up the stairs and ducked into Charlie's room. She was still fast asleep and Spencer quickly threw a blanket around her and lifted her up into her arms. With Charlie still asleep in her arms she went to Wayne's room and turned on the light. Whatever traits Wayne had picked up of Paige's Wayne was Emily son in that they both slept lightly, so Spencer wasn't surprised when he sat straight up in bed.
"Wayne I need you to put socks and shoes on and grab a jacket. Right now, it's an emergency ok?"
"Is it Charlie?"
"No honey, we need to get mommy to the hospital." Wayne all but jumped out of bed and tried to run past his Aunt, but Spencer stopped him.
"Wayne listen to me, get dressed and get in the car. I need to take care of mommy and that means I need you to help with Charlie. Can you do that for me?" She didn't like giving the boy orders, but she knew he would follow them.
"Yes ma'am." Wayne grabbed the items his Aunt had told him to get and put them on as he ran down the stairs. Spencer grabbed the car keys and thanked whatever god was listening that Paige had bought a car with a automatic remote start button. She started the car and quickly put both kids inside leaving Wayne to buckle his sister into her seat. She ran back inside and wrapped her arms around Emily who was somehow still totally conscious.
"Em, lean on me and let me do the work ok?" Emily took very small steps forward and Spencer half carried her to the car, working fast to get her in the front seat before turning around to lock the front door. As she jumped into the drivers seat she could tell that Charlie was still out like a light and Wayne looked scared as ever. Spencer peeled out of the driveway in a way that would make a NASCAR driver jealous. Speed limit laws didn't matter and she had every intention of making good on her promise to pay for therapy for the kids if this night did psychological damage, but the one thing she wouldn't do is imagine what it would be like to explain to Paige that something had happened to Emily or the babies. Spencer sped through stop signs and only begrudgingly stopped for red lights for sake of safety. Spencer didn't much care what happened to the car as she pulled into the ambulance bay and a police officer was about to yell at her when he saw the trace amounts of blood that were on her hands. He ran to get the medical staff and Spencer threw the door open to passenger door.
"Em. Emily, we're at the ER ok, can you look at me?" Emily forced herself to open her eyes.
"It hurts."
"I know it does honey and they are going to help you and make sure we get two healthy babies and one healthy Emily back after this night is over. Just stay with me, ok."
"Sa…ve babies."
"No, Emily we don't need to talk like that ok. They are going to help all of you."
"Promise." And with that last word Emily slumped against Spencer causing tears to stream down Spencer's face as she glanced over her shoulder to find three doctors racing toward her with a gurney. They quickly got Emily on the gurney and returned into the ER leaving a stricken Spencer behind.
"Ma'am? Ma'am?" Spencer came back to reality to see the police officer standing next to her.
"Sor…sorry. I'll move the car." Spencer's hands were shaking and the cop gestured toward the backseat. "How about you get the kids and I'll move the car for you. You not in any state to move this car." Spencer nodded and opened the backdoor to let Wayne hop out while she grabbed Charlie herself. Once she managed to get them all into the ER waiting room she gestured to a row of empty seats.
"Sit down buddy." Wayne silently complied as Spencer went to the desk to ask where they had taken Emily. The nurse couldn't tell her much since Emily had only just been taken in, but the woman was nice enough to hand Spencer a wipe to clean the blood off her hands. Spencer quickly returned to Wayne and sat down with Charlie still fast asleep in her arms. Wayne snuggled his face into his Aunt's arm and Spencer couldn't remember a time in her life where she wanted to call her mother so desperately. She honestly needed to call a lot of people, starting with Paige, but she had nothing to tell them other than some really scary stuff. While she was debating if she should call anyway a doctor came out of the double doors and walked right over to her.
"You're the woman that brought in the pregnant woman correct?"
"Emily. Her name is Emily." The doctor smiled and nodded. He lowered his voice so as not to wake Charlie up and so that Wayne couldn't hear.
"Emily has suffered what we call a placental abruption that was brought on by Preeclampsia. They are prepping her for surgery now."
"Surgery?"
"They have to deliver both babies now or they risk losing them and risk losing Emily along with them. Once the babies are out they can tend to Emily's needs better."
"Is she going to be alright?"
"We don't know. If everything goes well she should be fine."
"And if something goes wrong?"
"She is at a high risk of seizures or a stroke if her levels are too high which is why we need those babies out now. Now, as soon as I have a report I will have someone come tell you. It'll be someone from her surgical team at that point." Spencer couldn't do anything, but nod as the doctor walked away. Spencer reached into her pocket and grabbed her cell phone. She quickly put Charlie down so that she was curled up next to her brother.
"Listen buddy, I need to go call your momma and some other people so I need to step just over there. You stay in this seat and do not move and if any one bothers you, you scream for me ok?"
"Ok. Is mommy gonna die?" Spencer was NOT ready for her godson to ask such a pointed question.
"No, mommy isn't going to die."
"You promise?" Spencer swallowed her tears and nodded her head.
"I promise. If your sister wakes up, keep her with you. I'll be right back." Spencer walked over to the front door of the ER and as she kept a watchful eye on her niece and nephew she hit the contact in her phone for Paige's cell.
"Hi, you've reached the voicemail of Paige McCullers…" Spencer couldn't understand why Paige's phone would have been off at all, but she tried three more times before deciding she needed to go about this differently. She hit another button and this time it rang through.
"Fitz residence."
"We have a huge problem. You need to get to the hospital now." Spencer could hear Aria shift in bed before answering her.
"What's wrong?"
"They just wheeled Emily into surgery, I'm in the ER waiting room with two kids under ten and I am hoping really hard that I didn't just lie to my godson when I said mommy won't die. I need some help and Paige isn't picking up."
"I'll be there in 20 minutes." Spencer didn't say goodbye, she just hung up and hit a series of buttons before putting the phone to her ear one more time.
"Thank you for calling the Fours Seasons Santa Barbara, how can I assist you this evening?"
You all might hate me, but I assure you this is going somewhere good. I promise.
