First thing I wanna say is: THANK YOU GUYS FOR ALL OF THE POSITIVE REVIEWS I GOT! I was seriously considering ending this story if it hadn't been for all those reviews, you guys are the best.
There was one review that told me this story had 60 reviews, not 6 and I was reading it wrong. Let me clarify. I meant per chapter.
Another thing I wanna say. The 6 reviews or no update thing is permanent now. Like, it goes for every chapter. Thanks.
NOW I HAVE A QUICK RANT. IF YOU HAVE NOT READ ALL OF THE THREE BOOKS OF THE DIVERGENT TRILOGY DON'T READ THIS SCROLL DOWN TO THE CHAPTER.
I hated the last book Allegiant for many reasons. Like, I was disappointed in Nevermore, but it was amazing compared to Allegiant. In my opinoin, it was absolutely awful. If you feel the same way, please PM me I need to rant.
To end this AN on a happy note, I'm going to wish everybody a happy new year and merry Christmas ir whatever holiday you celebrate.
Read and review!
"Max," a gentle voice tore me from my slumber. "Max, we're here."
I rubbed my eyes, trying to wipe the grime away. Where was I again?
"When we're in Canada, do you think we'll see people riding moose?" Iggy asked loudly.
Oh yea, Canada. Joy.
"What's a moose?" Angel asked, and it took me a second to realize that she's probably spent all of her life in a cage. It's no wonder she doesn't know much. It also explains why she looked so surprised at everything we passed.
When we got on the bus, she had to sit in every empty seat, trying every one, seeing which fit her best.
"A really big, furry, brown animal with antlers," I explain. She nods, but I can see her confusion.
We get off of the bus slowly, unsure of what we're stepping into. Maybe there will be hope, or a sign labelled, 'Wait here for a free ride to home and a meal!' But no, nothing of that sort was there when we stepped off the bus.
In The Middle Of Nowhere, Canada, it was warmer than it had been in Alaska, but still chilly. We all slipped off our winter coats and pulled on sweatshirts of varying sizes. Fang looked ridiculous in an oversized bright green sweatshirt. Anything that wasn't black looked silly on him. Angel almost looked normal in a light pink My Little Pony hoodie, except for the slight bulge where her wings are. Iggy and I also have that bulge, except we both have extremely large sweatshirts to conceal them.
We walked a little ways down the road, looking for a way home. We did manage to find ourselves on a huge map sitting in some shopping plaza. We were closer to home than we had been a few hours ago, but at this rate, it would take us days to get back to Arizona. And that was if Jeb and his merry band of wolf men didn't find us first.
I looked through the backpack for a minute, sighing when I pulled out our last remaining dollar and a small map of America among a few coats and hats.
"We should find a place to settle down and figure out a plan," I say, trying to sound sure and firm, but my efforts were wasted. My voice came out shaky and confused.
"We don't have any money," Iggy says in a 'duh' tone. "We can't exactly find a five star hotel and order room service."
Angel looked at me with a smile. It brightened my world for a second, and I couldn't help but smile back. "We could find somewhere secluded. Not away from everything, but far enough that nobody would look. Obviously not a hotel," she says, a determined look on her face.
"Angel, why are you so smart?" I say, picking her up and squeezing her tightly.
She hugs me back, giggling a little. "I can read minds! I may not know everything about the world, but reading those jerks minds gave me a little bit."
I set her down, still smiling. "How about here?" I offer, placing my finger on the map where it is labeled 'Victoria Forest'. It's a mile away from where we are now, and when flying-even though I've only flown once- it would take much less time than it would running. And I can run a mile pretty quickly, too.
Then I'm reminded again that we can't fly anywhere by looking at Fang. A strangled sigh escapes my lips, and I can't help but feel slightly burdened by him. I try to make myself take that feeling back, but I can't. I just can't do it, especially when I know it's true.
"Fang?" I ask, trying to keep my voice steady. "Can you run?" Annoyance creeps its way into my tone, and I hope he doesn't recognize it.
He nods, and begins sprinting, and we follow.
The road we run on is empty. A car or two passes over the whole five and a half minutes it took us to get there. I could've run it in maybe three, and flown it in one. I sigh and try not to think that way. We're here, aren't we?
"Let's find a good place to spend the night," I say, already feeling like a leader. "Iggy and Fang, search from the ground while Angel and I search from the air."
I can see Fang is hurt by me not choosing to be with him, but honestly, in my eagerness to fly again, I don't care.
Iggy smiles and begins to walk with Fang, keeping an eye out. Together, they'll be a very good team. Iggy has amazing eyesight thanks to the nut jobs, but has a tendency to get distracted. Fang, on the other hand, has normal vision, but stays focused and will notice the small things.
After I peck Fang's cheek and make sure they're all set, I find a small clearing to take off in.
Breathe in, breathe out, I tell myself, focusing on the beating of my heart instead of how my life is in danger and all the other crap going on right now. Then I begin to run.
After a few steps I jump in the air and spread my wings. It takes a few shaky flaps, but I get a rhythm going and begin to rise steadily in the air.
I decide to stay about ten feet above the tree line, so I can still see everything on the ground with ease. It almost hurts not to see how far I can go, or how fast I can fly, but my instinct to survive and my knowledge that I'll be able to do this again keeps me close to the ground.
I hear Angel behind me, and she shouts out, "This is amazing!"
I laugh freely, turning my head to see her before yelling, "I know!"
For a while, I don't even remember to look for shelter. All I can think about is how perfect this is. The way the wind flows through me, blowing back my hair and placing tears in my eyes. The good kind of tears, though. The ones you get after laughing too hard or speeding down a roller coaster.
All I could think of was how strong I was. I felt unbreakable up here, like nobody could touch me or hurt me. And nobody could, because when you think about it, not many people have wings!
A laugh surges through me, and I can't help but let it out. Spreading my arms, I fly straight up, ignoring the search for a second. My wings feel powerful, as if they could keep doing this forever. Angel lets out a whoop behind me, the same carefree laugh escaping her.
God, this is amazing.
Eventually, we do stay quiet and search for shelter. Ten minutes pass, and still nothing seems worthy. Another ten minutes pass, and nothing shows up. Suddenly, I don't feel so great anymore. What if we can't find anything?
Just when worry begins to plague my thoughts again, I see it. A cave, hidden by overgrown trees, right next to a little bubbling stream. It's perfect, secluded and next to a water source. It'll protect us from weather, too.
I point it out to Angel. She smiles and nods before swooping down to land. We look around for a minute, to make sure we aren't invading a bear's house. When I deem it good enough for us, I walk out to the entrance and smile again.
"Angel," I say, "can you stay here while I go get them?"
She nods, smiling. She's old enough and brave enough to stay on her own for a little while.
Then I take off again, relishing the feel of the air coursing around me. It was just so peaceful.
A flock of birds squawks at me as they pass, probably wondering why such a big, ugly, awkward bird is flying near them. I realize that I am awkward compared to them.
Well, it isn't exactly my fault, I've only flown a few times in my entire life. And that was after I was kidnapped and grafted with avian DNA. I'm okay with being a sucky flier for now.
I fly near the birds for a moment or two more before I see Fang and Iggy scoping out a clearing.
I swoop down, chuckling when they jump at my sudden arrival.
"We found a place," I say, a little breathless from flying so fast. "A perfect little cave, you'll love it."
Then I realize I can't take off again. I'll have to walk and show them where to go. So I make my way through trees for maybe thirty minutes, ignoring Fang's heavy breaths.
When we finally get there, I don't see Angel, and I panic. What if they found her? What if she's dead? What if she's being attacked by some wild animal right now? Oh my God, this is all my fault, I shouldn't have left her alone, she's so young!
Then I hear a giggle from right above me, and I slowly look up. Angel sits above me, on a tree branch, eating a fruit of some sort.
"It's a fig," she tells me. "Jeb let me try one once, when none of the scientists were looking."
My heart aches for a second when she mentions my father, and how he may still have a sense of kindness.
Then I brush it off, quelling the ache that had spread through me. He doesn't get to ruin my mood.
"Where'd you find that?" I ask, jumping up to grab her ankle, but not hard enough to hurt her or pull her down.
"A few trees down, that way," she points, giggling at my attempts to reach her. "And you can't reach me!"
"Oh yeah?" I ask, raising my eyebrows. "Is that a challenge?"
She nods again, laughter erupting from her lips.
I narrow my eyes playfully, and jump up, spreading my wings so they can carry me high enough. I grab her waist and tickle her, letting her fall back into my arms. Falling back to the ground, I release her. Iggy chuckles at our antics, and I see Fang smirking at his side.
"What?" I ask them, shrugging my shoulders and turning towards where Angel had pointed earlier.
"You guys are insane," Iggy replies, walking closer to me quietly. My back is turned towards him, sure, but that doesn't mean I can't hear him, or see him out of the corner of my eye.
I burst out laughing when he's directly behind me, still giddy from flying, and then he tackles me.
"Iggy!" I scream, "Let go!"
All he does is laugh and throw me over his shoulder. "Nope. Angel said there was food over there, so I intend to go over there. No more dillying or dallying." He begins to walk, with me still thrown over his shoulder.
I huff dramatically and punch him on the back. "You're annoying, you know that?"
"I know, it's a quirk to my personality."
I sigh and slip from his grasp, falling behind him slightly to fall into step with Fang.
"Hey," I say quietly, looking up at him. "you've been kind of quiet."
He looks down at me, no emotion showing. "I'm Fang," he answers, still no movement in his face. "that's kind of my thing."
To anybody else he would look deadly serious, but I know him well enough to read him like a book. There's a light in his eyes, shining through his straight face. He's happy, and he's just as excited as the rest of us to be out of that hell.
"Well, yea," I say, leaning my head on his shoulder. "but I know you're just a big softie on the inside." I poke his stomach and laugh.
He looks offended for a minute, turning to look me in the eye. "I am as hard as a rock!" he exclaims, beating his chest, "I am a man!"
I let out an un-ladylike snort, and don't even try to stop the laughter that follows. "I Fang I man!" I mock through fits of giggles.
He glares at me playfully, then looks up at Iggy. "Hey Ig! Thanks for the idea!" He then proceeds to throw me over his shoulder.
"Fang!" I protest, crossing my arms so that my elbows dig into his back.
"Yes, Maxie?" he asks, knowing how I hate the nickname.
"Put me down!" I beat my fists against his back and kick my legs.
"I don't think I will," He adjusts me, and we keep walking.
When we reach the group of trees Angel had pointed out Fang finally releases me.
"Thank you," I grumble, crossing my arms over my chest and sulking.
"No problem," he answers, pecking my cheek and smirking at me.
"Love birds!" Iggy says, already holding a few of the fruits Angel had been eating. Figs, I think. "I'm hungry, start picking!"
"Since when are you the leader?" I call back, but I did begin to reach up to pluck the fruits from the branches.
"I'm not! That's you!"
I stop dead. Am I the leader? Is it me calling the shots? Are these people's lives now my responsibility? I shake it off and decide to talk to them about it later.
After we each have as many figs as we can carry, we start back to the cave, taking care not to drop our precious cargo.
Sitting on the winter coats we had laid out as beds, I take my first bite of fig. It's surprisingly sweet, and I can't help but take another bite. This is the first time I've eaten an actual food in God knows how long, and I'm going to enjoy it. Finally I'm not being fed through a tube.
Breathing deeply, I lean back onto Fang's chest and smile at my companions.
"I think we need to have a little celebration," I say, holding up my fig. "We're safe, full, and in Iggy's case, annoying." I pause as Iggy interjects his opinion. "We should be thankful."
Everybody smiles at me, lost in their own thoughts for a moment.
I can't help but think, damn, I wish I could have found these people sooner.
