That night, Jace went back to Jordan's house to get ready for his date. As he pulled on his Khakis, and polo, Jordan came in and inspected his friend. "Dude, why are you nervous? It's not like you haven't been on a date with her before."

"It's not that I'm nervous for the date, I'm nervous about what I'm going to have to tell her."

"What what would that be?"

"Have I ever told you why I came here to Brooklyn?" Once Jordan shook his head, Jace continued. "I was raised by my grandmother up until last year. Everyone in Idris knew about me but for some reason, none of the Institutes knew that Stephan and Celine Herondale had a son. Anyway, last year I came home and my grandmother met me at the door with my bags. She told me that I had to go to New York and find the Morganstern girl. My job was to protect her."

"I thought he had no idea who Clary was when you met her? No wonder your're nervous. Clary is going to kill you when she finds out."

"But that's the thing. My grandmother never told me what the girl looked like. So when I saw Clary at the carnival, she was only the beautiful girl with the red hair and green eyes. I didn't find out that she was Valentine's daughter until I found out she was a Shadowhunter."

"Oh. So you're telling her tonight?" Jace nodded and Jordan smirked. "Good luck, I hope you make it out alive, but if you don't, I promise to be at your funeral." He patted Jace's back and left the room

Clary was getting ready, for her date with Jace, in her room. As soon as she put the dress on, Isabelle came in and sat on Clary's bed, barely containing her smile. "Izzy, what are you doing here?"

"Clary I know you're getting ready for your big date with Jace, but I have to tell you something and I don't think I can wait any longer."

Clary sat down next to her best friend on the bed. "So, what is it? Spill!"

"Simon asked me out!"

"What?"

Isabelle was sitting in her room getting ready to go out hunting when her phone alerted her she had a text. She looked at her phone and immediately smiled. It was a text from Simon telling her to meet him outside the Institute. She quickly put her jacket on and ran out to meet him. "Hey," he said when she saw him in front of the gate.

"Hi. Is there something wrong?"

"No, the opposite actually. I have something I have to ask you and I'm kind of nervous."

She took a step closer and asked, "Well what is it?"

"Isabelle, I really like you and I was wondering if you wanted to go out on a date with me?"

A huge smile appeared on her face. "Yes! Of course I will go out with you!"

"So when are you two going out?" Clary asked when Isabelle finished telling her the story.

"Tomorrow night. I'm extremely excited! I came here to tell you and to ask you a few things."

"What is it?"

"I know that you're mad at Jace, but I don't understand why. I mean sure, he didn't tell you that he was a Shadowhunter, but you didn't tell him either."

Clary sighed and rested her head in her hands. She knew why Isabelle was asking, but it was hard for her to answer because she didn't understand why she acted the way she did. "To be honest, I don't know. Sure I was mad at him for not telling me, but you're right, I didn't tell him either. I know I want to make it up to him, that's why I'm going on this date. To show him that I'm not mad at him and I just want us back."

"Good because if Simon and I get serious, we'll need another couple to hang out with." The two girls hugged and shortly after, Isabelle left.

At seven, the doorbell rang and Clary tried to run to the door before Luke got there first, but she didn't make it. "Jace, come in," Luke said as he closed the door behind Jace.

"Thanks, Mr. Garroway." Jace turned to Clary and gave her a genuine smile. "You ready?"

"Yeah." Jace wrapped his arm around her waist and they moved toward the door. "Bye, Luke. Bye, Mom."

Before they could hear them say bye, the young couple walked out the door and Jace led her to his car. Once they reached the restaurant, they were already having a good time, talking about their past failed dates. "That was not my fault!" Jace exclaimed, but still laughing.

"Then who would you blame for the balloons falling on Simon! His hair was blue for a week because you but die in the balloons!"

"I blame it all on Jordan. He pushed me and the balloons fell out of my hands."

"But you had the balloons. What were you planning on doing with them?"

"Think about it, it was April Fool's Day and my girlfriend was standing under the balcony of my apartment. What do you think I was doing?"

She almost burst out laughing. "Jerk."

After a few more stories, Jace took her back home. Once they were at her door, Jace leaned in to kiss her and she leaned into him too. Their kiss was long and soft, leaving her breathless when he pulled away. "Goodnight Jace."

Before she could move though, he pulled on her hand and turned her so that they were face to face again. "Clary, I have to tell you something."

"Jace, what is it? What's wrong?"

"When I met you, I thought you were mundane and I continued to think that until I learned otherwise. When you told me that you were Valentine's daughter, I realized I fell in love with the girl I was looking for. I came to America to find the Morgenstern girl and protect her."

"You promise you didn't know that before."

"I swear on my life. But, Clary I needed to protect you for a reason, from a person. I don't know who he is but I do know his name."

"What's the name Jace?"

"His name is Jonathan."
