Chapter 10
It wasn't supposed to happen this way.
They were supposed to find Cat and make it out, all of them, together. They were supposed to win, they were the good guys. They just wanted their friend back, they didn't want to die. But there had been so many shadows, those creepy hands tripping them up, blinding them. Five kids walked into slaughter to save their friend.
Andre sat in the back of the ambulance, staring at the door with a vacant expression on his face. He could form tears, words, rage, sorrow or anything close to an emotion that wasn't apathy. The doors had been kicked open, people were being brought out, there had been so many, the elders finally realizing their kids had gone to fight a war they were too scared to face.
Andre watched in horror as his parents bodies were removed from the building, joining the lined up bags of bodies beside the building. He watched as more and more dark and light fae were removed, but still he was the only one to make it outside. Someone draped a blanket across his shoulders, a twist of his head revealed Holly Vega, her face looking blank like his, but her eyes shining with fear.
"She was always to brave for her own good."
"She's okay." Andre replied.
"I hoped you're right."
The sun was coming out again, the storm finally passing, and with the sun came the Valkyries. Holly's hand on his shoulder tightened, and a sense of urgency flooded through Andre as a blonde Valkyrie looked his way. Glancing at Holly the pair slowly moved to follow her through the building, watching as the others picked through the fallen.
As they went through the door, Ryder and Ponnie were lead out by the light and dark police officers dispatched to the scene, already found guilty of murdering the Fae elders to blame Tori and Trina. Ryder was grinning from ear to ear as he passed, dread filled Andre's gut. The blonde moved with purpose, skipping some bodies while her fellow Valkyries knelt by others.
Andre had been separated from Tori early on, going with Trina in search of Cat, but they had been quickly over whelmed, Jade and Beck had showed up in time to save them before the shadows and fae traitors attacked. From there he lost track of everyone. He wasn't sure if he'd seen Beck get hit by an arrow or if it was someone who looked like Beck, but he could not find him while he was carried from the house.
He remembered seeing sparks of red and green during the fight, and seeing Jade take someone's head clean off with her sword, and he remembered seeing Max throw two men across the room, but he didn't remember seeing the Vega sisters, and he didn't see Cat until the end.
Everyone had seen Cat.
She'd looked the same in his dream, her eyes solid black like two coals replaced the soft brown eyes, her red hair whipping around her face in every direction as her large feathery brown and black wings held her off the ground, her teeth all turned to razor points as she gripped a sword in her hand, magic literally pouring off of her, knocking people down in waves, but unlike in the dream the shadows were suffocated until they were no more and she collapsed to the ground, sending the entire place into darkness.
He glanced at Holly, who was watching the blonde with dread in her eyes, and then to the blonde whose face gave nothing away as she moved around the bodies on the floor. She paused suddenly, Andre nearly walked into her, and looked down at the ground. Beck was laying beside Trina, blood pouring out of his shoulder where an arrow protruded, and Trina had a pool of blood beneath her seeping from her shirt.
Holly clenched her fists, Andre reached out and rested his hand on her shoulder, both waiting for the blonde to take Trina, "they are alive." the blonde called out. People bustled toward them, and the blonde moved on. Holly let out the breath she was holding and the trio moved on until they entered the main room, met with a loud howling, the sound of heart break so potent Andre thought his own heart might break.
Jade was laying on the ground, Cat off to her left like a rag doll tossed aside, while a body Andre couldn't see was beneath her sobbing form. All he could see were the black pants and black shoes. The blonde knelt beside Jade who howled again so loudly he thought she might send the building down and pulled Jade up.
Holly collapsed to the ground, the sound she made was somewhere between a cry and a scream, and Andre felt his knees grow weak as he stumbled toward Cat, he had to make sure she was alright, he couldn't lose her too, he collapsed beside her, crying so hard he thought his chest might cave in as the blonde lifted Tori's lifeless body from the ground.
"I'm sorry." she whispered. And turned around, walking slowly back outside. Holly and Jade moved closer, Jade gripping onto Holly like her life depended on it while Holly fell apart. Shuffling feet entered the room and a sword clattered to the ground.
"Tori..." Trina's voice was no more than a whisper, but broke Andre's heart into its last piece and her knees buckled out, Beck falling with her, and holding her as she sobbed. Andre reached out to Cat, her eyes blinked slowly, just for a moment, and she gave him a loopy smile.
"I did it." she whispered, and then her eyes closed again.
"Yeah, you did it little red." he whispered, squeezing his eyes shut as more tears forced their way passed his eyes. He couldn't stop them, and even as the group left the building, Andre carrying Cat, Beck supporting Trina and Holly and Jade holding each other up, they were all still sobbing.
The total count of the dead was 125, the total count injured was 243, and the total number of minutes the Valkyries spent at the scene was 10, long enough to collect those worthy and leave the rest to be buried. In total they took four people.
The drive back to the Oliver house was silent, Holly driving with her hand so tight around the wheel her knuckles looked like bone. Robbie and Rex had stayed behind with Sikowitz, nobody could bare the thought of letting Robbie get hurt, and when they got to the house his breakdown was just as painful as Holly's.
Jade and Beck managed to help him into a room and eventually calmed him down while Andre laid Cat on the couch and cleaned the blood off of her face, sitting down beside her once she was cleaned up and waiting for her to wake up again, but at some point he fell asleep, to thankfully plain dreams until Cat gently shook him awake somewhere near the next morning.
Everyone assembled downstairs, sitting with warm drinks in their hands and staring at the rather obviously vacant spot beside Jade. Everything was going to be different now, and nobody was quite sure how things were going to work, but they had each other, and Andre supposed that was the best they could do for now.
