A/N: So it's really ironic that a reviewer left a comment that Jackson and April should have a fight because this installment has been in the works for a while. Enjoy! :)
Here's some married Japril! Go ahead, have feels! Lol.
Disclaimer: Same as always.
They Say It's The Worst
April stormed into an on-call room and Jackson followed her with a frustrated sigh. She wanted privacy for this conversation and an on-call room was the only place in the whole hospital that was even close to being private.
Their patient had been so excited to have a married couple on her case. She had called them adorable and had made a comment that so many people must be jealous of how happy and successful they were. Jackson had a feeling that after listening to them talk to each other for the past fifteen minutes, she now thought that they were anything but adorable, happy, and successful.
"Okay, what's wrong?" Jackson probed. "What do you think I did wrong?"
They had disagreed on their patient's course of treatment and surgical plan, but he wasn't sure what she was so upset about. As far as he was concerned, he was right, and he had pointed that out as politely as he could. Maybe his wife was just mad because this was the first case she had worked on since she had returned from maternity leave that hadn't gone according to plan.
Jackson watched her pace the room with her back to him before he walked up to her and placed his hands on her hips so that she had to face him. "Talk to me," he demanded in a whisper.
After a long moment of silence, April finally snapped. "You talked to me like your wife!"
He furrowed his brow in confusion and gently rubbed her upper arms. "Um, the last time I checked, you are my wife." He grabbed her left hand and rubbed his thumb over her engagement ring and wedding band. "This proves it. I think we still have that marriage certificate somewhere in the house too," he tried to joke.
She huffed and pulled her hand away from his. She took a step back from him and ran both of her hands through her hair. "Knock it off. I'm serious." Just thinking about what had just happened with their patient made her blood boil. "You disagreed with me, and that's fine, that's not what I'm mad about."
"Okay," Jackson answered slowly. "Then what's going on?"
"How you talked to me was so…so…" She practically growled in frustration, she hated that she was unable to articulate how she was feeling. "It was like 'Oh, okay, honey, good idea, but this is what we're going to do'. It was awful. It made me feel awful." She closed her eyes and stubbornly held her tears back. She blamed her Mommy hormones for how emotional she was feeling right now.
And now Jackson felt awful too. He hadn't meant to make her feel that way and he hadn't realized that he had talked to her that way either. "April, I never meant to do that and you know it."
"I know," she nodded with a whisper. "I know you didn't."
He walked up to her again and slipped his arms around her waist. She seemed to be calm once again. "Okay, I'm sorry," he murmured. He leaned down to capture her lips but she pulled away from him. "April, come on—"
"Can you honestly answer a question for me?" She interrupted him.
"Yeah, of course I can," he responded eagerly.
She took a deep breath before she broached a very dangerous topic of conversation. "Do you see me as an equal in this hospital?"
He couldn't stop himself from releasing a laugh. "April, that's such a stupid question."
She angrily narrowed her eyes at him. "Do you see me as a professional equal? Because I don't think that you do. Today you treated me like your spouse, not your colleague."
"And I said that I was sorry!" He yelled in frustration. "What else do you want me to say?"
"Answer my question!" She shouted back.
Now he was just as angry and worked up as she was. "I shouldn't have to. You should already know the answer."
He walked towards the on-call room door and angrily flung it open. The door slammed against the wall and the sound resonated throughout the hallway. He ignored all of the curious stares and briskly walked down the hall. He didn't have a destination in mind; he just walked, with his head down and his lab coat flying out behind him. He only stopped walking when he heard Mark Sloan call his name.
He spun on his heel and barked, "What?"
Mark's eyes widened and he held his hands out in front of him pacifyingly. "Whoa. What's up?"
"Nothing," Jackson lied as his nostrils flared.
"Yeah, right," Mark responded sarcastically. He wasn't about to push the issue though. He knew that the younger man would open up to him when he was ready. So he changed the topic to something that he assumed would brighten Avery's spirits. "You and April have date night tonight, right?"
Jackson squeezed his eyes shut in frustration as he realized that Mark was right. "God dammit!"
"We're going," April told her husband firmly as she stood in the bathroom applying her makeup. She had bought a new dress and she had spent time grooming this morning, so they were going. She didn't care if she and Jackson sat at the table eating their dinner in silence; she had been looking forward to this for two weeks, so they were going. "We've had these reservations for weeks and Alex and Elizabeth are already on their way over to babysit."
Jackson groaned loudly and ran his hands over his face as he sat on the edge of their bed. He had showered and shaved, and had proceeded to just sit in their bedroom, in his boxers, in the hope that April would want to go through with this as much as he did. No such luck apparently. "I'm not exactly in the mood, April."
After the twins' birth, they had decided to designate date nights and make them a priority so that they always remembered to make time for one another. They needed to be alone every now and then, outside of the hospital and without their kids. Date night was supposed to be romantic, intimate, and fun. He had made a reservation at one of Seattle's five star restaurants in anticipation of a very romantic evening with his wife. He had not envisioned this.
The red-head peeked around the doorway so that she could look at her husband sternly. "Neither am I! Just put some freakin' clothes on!"
He reluctantly got up off of the bed and walked towards their closet.
Their fight from earlier in the day still hadn't been resolved. Neither one of them was willing to back down. Jackson refused to answer her question because, in his mind, he didn't need to, she should already know that he respected her in every possible way. April, on the other hand, was not letting him off the hook without a concrete answer. She needed to hear it.
They were in a stalemate.
He chose one of his favourite suits and paired it with a simple white shirt and a red tie since April was wearing a red dress. He got dressed and sat down on the edge of the bed once again. He stood up once April emerged from the bathroom.
"You look nice," he told her sincerely. He had never been able to resist her in a dress and her hair was elegantly pulled up. She just looked gorgeous.
"Thanks, you too," she replied in a clipped tone. She grabbed her most comfortable pair of black heels from their closet and grabbed Jackson's dress shoes as well. She placed the shoes in front of her husband and slipped her heels on her feet. She sighed when she noticed something off about his usually immaculate appearance. "Your tie is crooked."
She reached forward to straighten his tie and he murmured a thank you. He rested a hand on her hip to keep her in place but before he could say anything, there was a slap on their door that could only be their son.
After releasing a soft sigh, Jackson answered the door with a happy smile. "Hey buddy, what's up?"
"There are lights outside!" Parker announced with a grin.
Jackson chuckled as he lifted Parker into his arms. "That means that Uncle Alex and Aunt Elizabeth must be here." He walked through the house and greeted his sister and brother-in-law as they walked through the front door. "Hey guys."
"Hey Avery," Alex replied. "Hey little Avery!" He grabbed Parker out of Jackson's arms and began to tickle him mercilessly.
Jackson smiled as he listened to his son giggle before he turned towards his sister. "Uh, the girls are already asleep but Lily has a tendency to wake up in a few hours. Parker's already had his bath so all that you have to do is read him a story. I left money on the island in the kitchen for pizza or whatever and there's beer in the fridge if Alex wants one, and—"
Elizabeth stopped her brother from rambling by placing a hand on his arm. "I know the drill," she chuckled. "We have done this before, remember?"
"Right," Jackson said as he ran a hand over his head.
Something was very noticeably off so Elizabeth had to inquire. "What's wrong?"
"Uhh, April and I are fighting," he answered quietly.
"And?" Elizabeth probed. So they were fighting, she wasn't sure what the problem was. She and Alex fought all of the time. It was a normal part of being married. They fought a lot, which meant that they also made up a lot too, and that was pretty great.
He looked at her angrily. "What do you mean and? I hate fighting with my wife. It sucks and I'm not used to it."
"When's the last time you two fought?" Jackson's brow furrowed in thought and her mouth dropped open in shock. "You actually have to think about it?" She and Alex had fought two days ago.
"We don't fight a lot. It's a good thing," he argued passionately. "This is the first real fight we've had since we've gotten married." They had had disagreements and misunderstandings, but this was their first real fight. This was the first time that they had yelled and snapped at each other, and had given each other the silent treatment.
Now that Jackson really thought about it, the history of his and April's entire relationship didn't include that much fighting, even dating back to the early days of their friendship. When they had first started dating, they had had that nasty argument about their fellowships that had led to their "break", then after they had gotten engaged they had had that stupid fight about sex, and just before their wedding they had gone through a bit of a rough time regarding Kelly Masters and her becoming an Avery. But since they had gotten married, their life together had been practically perfect. He didn't think that the time she had gotten mad at him for running into a burning building really counted.
"But you've been married for five years!" Elizabeth stated incredulously.
"It's a good thing!" Jackson repeated passionately.
Both Averys quickly shut up when April entered the living room.
"Hey Kepner," Alex greeted with Parker thrown over his shoulder.
"Hey Alex. Hey Elizabeth," she smiled. "Thanks for babysitting."
"No problem," Elizabeth muttered awkwardly.
April had already kissed both of her daughters goodnight so she walked towards Alex and smiled at her son as he hung over the back of his uncle's shoulder upside down. "Goodnight sweetie. Be a good boy, okay?"
"I will," he giggled. "Have fun!"
April grabbed her coat and then coldly motioned to her husband. "Come on Jackson, let's go."
Jackson said goodnight to Parker and then escorted April to their SUV. He held the door open for her but spoke before she could get in. "Are you sure you wanna do this?" He asked one last time. "What's the point? We're not even talking to each other right now."
"It's date night so we're going out," she stated firmly. "So let's just get dinner over with so that we can go somewhere and have sex."
He stared at her in disbelief. "Right," he began sarcastically, "because I'm so turned on right now I don't know how I'm going to be able to keep my hands off of you." She simply scowled at him so he closed the SUV door with an exasperated sigh.
This was going to be a long night.
On their way to the restaurant, Jackson had gotten the bright idea to take a series of back roads instead of taking the freeway. He had done it in an effort to avoid traffic, but instead they ended up with a flat tire. The unfortunate accident had only fueled their frustrations.
It was as if this day couldn't get any worse.
April had decided to stay in the car while Jackson assessed the situation. However, after ten minutes she had grown impatient. She finally decided to get out of the SUV and she slammed the passenger door closed behind her. "Do you even know how to change a flat tire?" She questioned in annoyance.
Jackson glanced up at her and gritted his teeth. "Yes, I know how to change a tire," he announced. "I've just never done it myself," he admitted after a pause.
She rolled her eyes and crossed her arms over her chest. "Great," she muttered. "We're going to be here until tomorrow morning. You should have just taken the freeway like we always do."
He groaned loudly. He was having a hard enough time with this without her hovering above him being negative. "Can you get back in the car, please?"
"I don't want to get back in the car," she answered stubbornly.
"April," he began in exasperation. "Just get back into the goddamn car."
"Don't talk to me like that," she shrieked.
He sighed before he realized that she was right. "Sorry…it's just that I'm not going to get this fucking tire changed." He stood up, fully admitting defeat, and faced her. "What do you want to do?"
"I dunno," she mumbled as she glanced away from him.
His frustration rose again. "You're being really helpful, April."
She tossed her arms in the air and groaned. "I don't know what you want me to say! I don't know how to change a tire either!"
"Make a suggestion!" He yelled back as he started to pace back and forth along the road. "We've already lost our reservation and I have dirt and grease all over this fucking expensive suit! What do you want to do?" He asked her again.
"Call Alex," she finally snapped. "He definitely knows how to change a tire."
"Fine."
Jackson pulled his cell phone out of his pocket and called his friend.
Alex picked up on the first ring. "Hey man, what's up?"
"Hey," Jackson grumbled. "We got a flat. Do you think you can come and help us out?"
"Yeah…uh…sure. Where are you?"
"I'll send you the coordinates, you can put it in your GPS," Jackson told him before he abruptly ended the call.
He slipped his phone back into his pocket and turned back to his wife, who was still leaning against their vehicle. She looked just as frustrated and deflated as he felt.
It was chilly outside but it seemed as if neither of them noticed.
"Well," April began after an uncomfortable silence. "I guess this gives us some time to talk."
"Because that's been working out for us today," Jackson retorted bitterly.
"I just need to know that you see me as your equal, Jackson. That's important to me," she told him earnestly as she placed a hand on her chest. "We work together every day and its okay for us to disagree, but I need to know that you respect my opinion, and that you're—"
He couldn't listen to this anymore. "Can you just shut up for five minutes?" Jackson bellowed.
His wife looked at him indignantly and opened her mouth to speak once again. However, he prevented her from saying anything by molding his mouth to hers. He pressed her against the side of the SUV as his tongue invaded her mouth.
April hungrily kissed him back and desperately grasped the lapels of his suit jacket.
They pulled apart only when they needed to take a breath. Jackson panted as he pressed his forehead against hers and wrapped his arms tightly around her torso.
He took a deep breath and licked his lips before he spoke softly. "I respect you as a surgeon. You're better than me and I know that."
"I'm not better," she corrected him quickly.
"You are," he smiled before he kissed her again. "So yes, I see you as a professional equal and then some."
April sighed as she placed both of her hands on his face. "I shouldn't have gotten so mad at you. I'm sorry."
"It's okay," he laughed quietly, "you're allowed to get mad and so am I, and I'm sorry too. We just have to remember to apologize…and make up afterwards," he added with a grin.
She hummed seductively before she pressed her mouth to his jaw. "We've never really made up before."
He laughed huskily as he reached behind her and opened the door to the backseat. "Get in."
April giggled as she climbed into the backseat and Jackson eagerly followed her. She removed her coat as her husband got settled and once he was comfortable, she straddled his lap. He looked up at her intensely as he gathered the skirt of her dress in both hands and pushed the material up her creamy thighs. He raised a hand to grab the back of her neck and he pulled her down to him for a rough kiss.
She moaned as she sucked his bottom lip into her mouth. "Ya know," she began in a thick voice as she pulled at his tie and started to unbutton his shirt. "They say that the first marital fight is the worst."
"Yeah," he grunted distractedly. He was willing to admit that he probably wasn't the best listener right now. His mouth was occupied with her neck and all of his blood had rushed below his belt. The way that she was grinding against him made him feel like a teenager again. "So what does that mean?"
"Well," she grinned mischievously. "I think that it means that the makeup sex after the first marital fight should be pretty good."
Jackson tossed his head back and groaned. "That sounds fantastic."
April leaned forward and wrapped both of her arms around his shoulders. She kissed him softly and murmured against his lips. "Do you think you can get me off before Alex gets here?"
"I will certainly accept that challenge," he answered smugly.
