See, I promised I'd get chapter 10 out today, didn't I? No school and reviews are great motivators for writing, hint hint. And now, time for some drama! Enjoy :D
Danny, Steve and Kono stared at Chin in disbelief.
"Connor Bayle is dead?" Kono repeated, and Chin nodded.
"Afraid so. The hospital ruled it as a suicide." Chin brought up the coroner's report. "There were extremely high levels of methamphetamines in his system."
"So, we're back where we started, then?" Danny said. "Two victims and no suspect?"
"Maybe not," Steve replied. "As good a suspect as Bayle was, there was no way he could have been our killer. Remember what we saw from the tape?"
"The killer's a woman," Kono remembered.
"Chin, what female relatives does Bayle have?" Steve asked.
Chin's fingers flew across the keyboard. "The only relative I can find is his mother. Jocelyn Bayle." Chin brought up a copy of her driver's licence.
Danny and Steve instantly recognised her. "That's Jocelyn. We talked to her today at Enterprise. She told us about the stolen van."
"She stole it," Danny said. "She must've had a key to the lot as an employee. She could get in, grab the van and drive away with it, and no-one would be any the wiser that it was her."
"Right. Chin, does she have an address?"
Chin quickly did a search, but didn't get a result. "No, she doesn't have a fixed address."
"Well, she has to be staying somewhere," Kono interjected. "Is she staying in a hotel? See what she's bought with her credit card."
Chin nodded and looked up Jocelyn Bayle's credit card statements. "No, she's not paying for a hotel. If she is staying in a hotel, she's probably paying in cash."
"What about a cell phone?" Danny asked. "Is there one registered in her name?"
"Yes, there is!" Chin shouted excitedly after a moment. He started a trace on it. "It's at the Golden Sands Hotel on Wilder Avenue."
"Alright, let's go," Steve ordered, and they ran from the office down to the cars.
The cars screeched to a halt outside the hotel. Steve and Danny leapt out of the Camaro, while Chin and Kono emerged from her Cruze. They quickly donned TAC vests and made sure their weapons were loaded, before they entered the lobby of the hotel.
A man in uniform was stood behind the reception desk, talking to a woman. They both turned with wide eyes as the Five-0 team entered.
Steve strode over to the desk. "We're looking for this woman; Jocelyn Bayle," he said, showing him a picture of her. "What room is she staying in?"
The scared-looking man quickly typed in the name into the computer and came back with a result. "Room 211. Second floor, sixth door on the left."
Steve nodded and the team ran up to the second floor. They exited the stairwell and moved carefully down the corridor until they got to the right door. Danny and Steve moved to one side, while Chin and Kono stayed on the other.
Steve pounded on the door. "Jocelyn Bayle! Five-0, open up!" There was no sound from inside. Moving so he was in front of the door, Steve pulled his leg back and kicked the door back. Danny entered the hotel room first, gun raised in front of him, Steve following immediately after and Chin and Kono behind them.
They systematically checked the entire room, each calling "Clear!" when they didn't find anything. They gathered in the living area of the hotel room.
"Cell phone's here," Kono said as she came in. "But she's not."
"Hey Steve," Danny called from the bedroom. "You're gonna want to see this."
Steve, Chin and Kono came into the bedroom and looked at what Danny had found.
"Whoa," Kono muttered as she came in. "She really did her homework, didn't she?"
One of the walls of the bedroom was entirely covered in pictures of Tim Burr and Roisin Dolan. A large map with green and red thumb tacks pushed in covered the rest of the wall.
"She was stalking Tim and Roisin for weeks," Danny said and pointed to the map. "She's pinned Kuhio Beach Park and nearby streets that Roisin would have taken to get home. Same for Tim."
"She stalked them and found the best times and places to grab them," Steve observed. He looked around the room and his eyes fell upon another picture on the bedside table. He went over and picked it up. "We may have a problem."
The others looked at the photo. Jocelyn was in the picture, with her arms wrapped around a young man whom they took to be Connor Bayle. Underneath them, Jocelyn had written: "I'll see you soon, baby boy."
"She's going to kill herself," Chin realised.
Steve nodded. "Kono, get a BOLO out on Jocelyn Bayle."
The Hawaiian woman nodded and pulled her phone out and called HPD Central. "I need a BOLO out on Jocelyn Bayle. Five-six, Caucasian, long brown hair. Suspect is driving a Ford Transit, plate number BNT-263."
"Where would she go, if she was going to kill herself?" Chin wondered aloud.
"I would hazard a guess and say somewhere that was special to Connor," Danny replied. "Someplace that he loved. She would feel close to him then if she does get the chance to kill herself."
"But how do we find it?" Steve asked. "How do we find that special place?"
"Just search until we find something, I guess," Danny said, shrugging his shoulders. Steve, Chin and Kono all sighed. They didn't like the suggestion, but they couldn't think of a better suggestion.
"Okay. Chin, Kono, you look in here. Danny, let's go check the living room."
Half an hour later, none of them had found anything. They'd looked in every place they could find, but they hadn't found anything that could direct them to where Jocelyn was heading.
Chin sat on the bed, watching as Kono looked in the single wardrobe in the bedroom. "That's the third time you've looked in that cupboard, Kono," he said in a bored voice. "Nothing is going to magically appear in there."
"Maybe we missed something in here," Kono argued. "Maybe there's something in here that we didn't see before."
"First time, maybe, but not the second and third time," Chin replied, and pushed himself to his feet. "There's nothing in here. Let's go and-"
"Wait!" Kono snapped, holding up her hand. "Put your foot back there."
Chin had taken a couple of steps forward before Kono had snapped at him. Frowning, he placed his foot behind him and a low creak sounded from underneath him. Chin looked at Kono with wide eyes.
"Loose floorboard."
"Steve!" Kono called as she knelt down beside the floorboard. Steve and Danny came running in. "There's a loose floorboard here."
Steve whipped his switchblade out and stuck it between the floorboards and pried the loose one up. When there was about an inch of the board up, Steve pulled it up with his fingers and reached down into the gaping hole left behind. He moved his hand about, groping about in the darkness. He couldn't find anything, but…
Steve's fingers touched the corner of something. His breath hitched for a moment and the others leaned forward in anticipation. "I found something!" he exclaimed, trying to grab hold of it. Eventually, he managed to grasp it and Steve pulled the object up from under the floor. "It's a letter."
Danny took the letter and quickly skimmed through it, stopping when he got to the second paragraph. "It's from Connor. 'I've been a little stressed out recently, because of the amount of coursework we have to do. But Tim had an idea as to how we and few others could de-stress. Growing up here, Tim had done pretty much everything there is to do in Hawaii – surfing, snorkelling, hiking trails, all of it. And one trail he told us about was Manoa Falls. Tim told us about its beauty, its majesty, but seeing it yourself… Words cannot describe the grandeur of Manoa Falls. I almost expected to see an angel or two there; Heaven really does exist'."
"We need to get up to Manoa Falls now," Steve said. The four of them quickly got to their feet and ran from the room and back down to the cars, before speeding towards the Manoa Falls trail.
Ten minutes later, Five-0 arrived at the start of the trail. They leapt out of their vehicles and started running up the path. They knew they had to hurry; the entire trail took about 45 minutes to complete, and Manoa Falls was about halfway along the trail. If they didn't get there in time, Jocelyn would kill herself.
Jocelyn slowly walked up the trail. The sunlight filtered through the overhanging branches and leaves of the trees on either side of the trail, creating several patterns on the ground. Jocelyn stopped for a moment. She was heading towards her death. Jocelyn's breath hitched as she felt a surge of fear. Did she really want to do this?
Yes, she did want to do this. Jocelyn reached into her pocket and pulled out the picture of Connor that had been taken on his eighteenth birthday. His smiling face staring up at her comforted her slightly. Soon, oh, so soon she would be reunited with her baby boy. Soon, her pain would stop, and she would be eternally happy once more. Comforted by these thoughts, Jocelyn started walking up the trail again.
Steve was at the forefront of the group, sprinting ahead of the others. Without slowing his pace, he pointed down at the ground.
"There's fresh footprints, and only one pair!" he yelled. "We can't be far behind her!"
Jocelyn walked out from under the cover of trees out onto Manoa Falls. Her breath escaped her in a huff and an awe-filled smile slowly broke out on her face as she took in the beauty of the location. Connor had been right; this was such a beautiful place. Heaven really did exist. Maybe this will make it easier to go, Jocelyn thought to herself.
She walked forwards and stood by the edge of the cliff, looking down into the water below. It was mostly calm, except for the ripples caused by the waterfall. The calm before the storm, Jocelyn couldn't help but think. Pulling Connor's picture from her pocket once more, Jocelyn stared at it for a long moment before she placed a gentle kiss on his head. She threw the picture away and watched as it slowly fell down to the water.
"I'll be with you soon," she whispered, tears in her eyes. "I'm coming."
She took a step forward, so she was right on the very edge of the cliff. Closing her eyes and raising her arms to her sides, Jocelyn took a deep breath. All she had to do now was step off and she could be with Connor again. Rising up onto her toes, Jocelyn started to lean forwards.
"Jocelyn Bayle!" Her eyes snapped open and she looked to her left. The two cops that had spoken to her earlier that day were standing there, along with another man and a woman. "Step away from there and get down on your knees," the brown-haired one ordered.
"Get away!" Jocelyn yelled.
"Jocelyn, don't do this," Danny said in a calm voice.
"Why? Why shouldn't I? Why can't I be with my son again?" she retorted.
"You deserve to be with Connor - no parent should outlive their child," Danny said. "But would Connor really want you to do this?"
Jocelyn stared at him, chest heaving, before she whispered, "It hurts... so much." The tears finally started to drip down her cheeks. "I-I can't stand it any more."
"I know. I know it hurts, but this is not the way," Danny continued. "Connor wouldn't want you to kill yourself. He'd want you to carry on living, and then find him... when it is the right time." Holstering his weapon, Danny slowly moved forward and held his hand out towards Jocelyn. "Come on."
She hesitated for a moment, but Jocelyn took Danny's hand, and he led her away from the edge of the cliff. With no emotion showing on his face, Danny pulled his handcuffs out and pulled Jocelyn's hands behind her back.
"Jocelyn Bayle, you are under arrest for two counts of first degree murder. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed for you. Do you understand the rights I have just read to you?" Danny recited.
With tears falling down her cheeks, Jocelyn nodded. "Yes, I do."
Without saying anything, Danny handed Jocelyn off to Chin and Kono, and they started walking her back along the trail. Steve stood there for a moment, looking at Danny. "Are you okay, Danno?"
Danny nodded and gave him a small smile. "Yeah, I'm fine," he said quietly, and started to follow Chin and Kono. "Come on; let's go."
