Chapter 10 – Unusual Flight

"Daddy, I'm sorry but I have to go." Minnie said, she was throwing things into a bag, walking around the room and choosing different things she felt she should take. Tony was leaning against the doorframe and protesting against her leaving. Thor was waiting downstairs, a little uneasy as he could hear the argument upstairs.

"No you don't! I don't want you going to some planet you barely know!" He shouted, stepping forward and catching a can of deodorant that she'd thrown at the bag.

"But the fact that I do know it surely makes it safer!" she shouted back and stopped herself. There was a moment of shocked silence between them, she had never raised her voice at him before. She took a deep breath and walked over to him, gently taking the deodorant from him and putting it down beside her.

"Daddy, Thor won't let anything happen to me you know that. And when we were in trouble he came to help us. I have to help him, I have to help Asgard."

"When Thor came to help us it was because of one of them." He retorted, but his tone was softer and Minnie knew that if she persevered she might just win.

"Yes I know, but technically it wasn't. Loki wasn't an Asgardian, he was descended from Frost Giants but brought up as an Asgardian prince. Besides, he's gone. He's dead, remember? He can't hurt me."

"But there are hundreds of things up there that can."

"And I know how to protect myself. You've made sure of that." She sighed as he gave her a look. In his heart he knew he was defeated and that his headstrong daughter was going to win this battle, but he couldn't bear to see her get hurt. She took his hand in both of her own and gave him a small smile.

"I can probably fix up something in my cell phone so that I can get reception up there. I'll call you, every day if that's what you want."

"Every hour."

"Every six hours."

"Three."

"Done."

The two of them shared a small smile before Tony did something Minnie was not expecting. He enveloped her in a large hug and squeezed her so tight it was almost uncomfortable. After everything that had happened in New York he was so much more protective of her, so much more fatherly. Secretly she liked it, but she was also worried, New York had changed him and she couldn't work out whether it was for the better or not.

"I'm sometimes jealous of your cleverness…" he mumbled into her hair and she smiled.

"You're not meant to admit that out loud." She muttered into his chest, suppressing a giggle. "You're Tony Stark, nobody is smarter than you."

"I guess you're right." He said, pushing her away and holding her at arm's length. He looked at her for a second before patting her shoulder and turning. He remained stood in the doorway until she was done packing, then they both made the journey downstairs to the waiting God together.

Thor stood when she entered. She'd changed into something she knew was practical for travelling to Asgard, jeans and a strappy top with a hoodie over the top. Her hair was tied half up and half down with her mother's ribbon and she wore simple jewellery. Two sets of studs in both ears, a cheap little bracelet and a pink diamond ring that Pepper had given her for her birthday. She wanted to look good when she arrived, she would probably take off all the jewellery and leave it in her quarters as soon as she arrived. She wore her favourite white sneakers on her feet and kept tugging down the sleeve on her left arm without much thought. Somehow, she wanted to keep the sigil to herself for just a little bit longer.

He nodded to her gravely and she turned to her father to say goodbye. Pepper was in the office, she wasn't even aware any of this was going on.

"I'll see you soon daddy." She said quietly and he nodded, unable to return her goodbye. She gave him a swift hug that he returned half-heartedly. He'd never been good with goodbyes.

Once she'd walked over to Thor, she hung on to him and they left.

The flight to Asgard was unusual to say the least, it was as exhilarating and fantastic as always and terrified and thrilled her just as much as normal. They were flying upwards at a wonderful speed and through the rainbow haze Minnie could make out the whole universe. She squeezed her eyes shut to stop the tears running down her cheeks. She grinned and had to stop herself shouting out or screaming due to excitement. Beneath her eyelids she could still see the rainbows dancing and glimmering against the blanket of stars outside of them. She buried herself in Thor's chest and laughed out loud at the sheer brilliance of it.

The journey was over all too quickly and Minnie felt disappointed that the ride couldn't last longer. But as they began to make their way down the enormous bridge she smiled at the sight before her, the glittering city of Asgard.

"So how come your dad asked for me?" Minnie asked as they walked alone. "I always got the impression that he didn't like me much."

"I'll admit I'm unsure as to why he requested you. I also shared that opinion."

"The opinion that he didn't like me?" Minnie said with a cheeky smile, and Thor turned to grin at her.

"No, your opinion that he didn't like you much. But we do need your help. You're the smartest human I could call upon, and you have been here before. You know it and understand it. Besides, my public adores you."

"Well it doesn't take much to adore me."

Thor smiled as they reached the palace and Thor showed her to her quarters even though she knew where it was, as she dumped her bag on her bed she turned to him in the doorway.

"How are you? Really?" she asked quietly, she couldn't remember if she and Thor had ever really had a serious conversation. They were so good at being immature and silly with each other that there hadn't ever been cause for seriousness. But this was serious, she was about to broach a difficult subject for them both.

"I'm fine." He replied, a little puzzled by her soft tone and randomly timed question.

"I mean, I heard about Loki. I was wondering how you were feeling about that… You were brothers once."

There was a pause as Thor thought about what she had said and Minnie was suddenly afraid that she had overstepped the mark and now Thor would be angry or upset with her. She hadn't meant to offend him, truthfully, she was trying to comfort him and be friendly.

"I have grieved for him, but there are more pressing matters that need to be sorted at this particular time. I do not wish to discuss this any further."

Minnie nodded, understanding that he wasn't ready to talk about the death of the brother he had once been close to. Instead they made their way from Minnie's chambers and towards the main throne room where Odin sat in his golden chair. She knew that she should probably have found a way to contact her father to tell him that she'd arrived safely and she was alright.

"Miss Stark, we thank you for coming to our aid." Odin's voice boomed across the hall as they approached. As per protocol they bowed to their high leader, Minnie kept her head dipped respectfully. She wanted Odin to like her, she wanted him to trust her.

"I'm glad to help you sir, I hope I can be of assistance. I am at your command." She thought that was enough sucking up for two breaths.

"Ah no, we thank you, Minnie."

At this Minnie looked up, all the times she had met Odin he had never used her name that way. If he'd ever used her first name he had called her Minerva. As she looked into his eyes, there was one thing she was sure of, this was not Odin.
