"Amelia's what?" Olivia exclaimed when Fin briefed her of his interrogation. She was lying in the hospital bed, Elliot sitting beside her on speaker phone with Fin and Munch. Amelia and Michael were with the Captain, who came to visit, down in the cafeteria.
"Uncle. Biological. His story checks out. He is related to Amelia but to not Michael. His brother, George is 45, with priors on assult, assult of an officer, theft, and various other things like parking and speeding tickets. He, on the other hand is clean not even a parking ticket. George has a current address in queens. We are going to go there right after this. We are holding Jason on assault of an officer, kidnapping and possession of a deadly weapon without a licence. He's looking at least five years."
"Good. Have you told Amelia yet?" Elliot asked.
"No, we figured we would bring them over so you can talk to her yourself, she might take it better coming from you," replied Munch.
"Ok thanks. But do you think he could have killed Madeline?" asked Olivia, now trying to sit up farther on the bed, but wincing causing a look of alarm to spread across Elliot's face. She saw this and gave him the look that stated "I'm fine" before continuing to speak Munch and Fin. "Does he have an alibi for Thursday night? Because he seems want to get to Amelia."
"No he does have an alibi, but he gave us the impression that he is working for someone, maybe Amelia's father. We are still trying to get a name, but when we do you'll be the first to know," this time Fin replied to their question.
They talked a few more minutes, and agreed that either Munch or Fin will bring them both over in about an hour so Liv could talk to Amelia.
Amelia was holding Michael's hand as they walked in the hospital doors behind Munch. Fin wanted to check up on his baby girl, but the Captain had him interrogate Amelia's uncle more instead.
As soon as they made their way up to Olivia's room, Michael bounced up and down right in front of the bed, as if asking to get up. Elliot looked at Olivia, and her eyes almost pleaded with him to let the little boy up.
"Look buddy, I know you want to see Livia, but she got hurt really bad on her tummy ok? So that means don't touch her tummy and you have to be extra careful ok?"
"Yes Elwtt" Michael replied in his cute three year old voice. And with that Elliot gently picked up Michael and placed him on the bed next to Liv's side that didn't have the arm that was connected to the IV and heart monitors. The moment he touched the blankets, he snuggled close to Olivia as she pulled him in close.
Amelia stood there awkwardly, until Liv motioned for her to take a seat on the bed by her feet. Amelia slowly trotted over and sank into the bed.
Silence settled into the room, only the sounds on the constant beep beep beep of the heart monitor was heard.
"Okay. Im done with no one talking to me. Would someone please tell me whats going on?" Amelia asked, annoyance clearly in her voice.
"And that will be my queue to leave," stated Munch. "Call me when you're done here."
"So?" Amelia asked once he was out of the room.
"Ok. Amelia, you know the guy that held us in your apartment? Through some research and conversations, we found out that he is your biological uncle, from your dads side. His name is Jason Coldman. His brother's name is George, your father, and we are trying to track him now. We don't believe that he has anything to do with it, but your father might. I'm sorry," Elliot finished, his voice slowly fading away.
Silence settled in again.
"Are you sure?" Amelia said in a smaller voice that was barely above a whisper.
"Not yet. But once we know for sure we will tell you. I'm sorry," Liv said, trying to comfort her, reaching towards her, but her hand got pushed away as Amelia stood up and swiftly ran from the room, tears in her eyes.
"Stay here, I'll go talk to her," Elliot said as he say that Olivia was trying to get out of bed to follow the teen, not remembering that she was hooked up to machines and the little boy that was curled up to her side.
"How did you find me?" Amelia heard the footsteps or rather shuffle of Elliot as he walked over to where she was sitting in the corner of the nurses station.
"Kid, you don't give me enough credit, I am a detective for a reason."
Amelia seemed to be okay with that answer because she curled tighter into a ball and didn't say anything, only silently continuing to cry to herself.
Elliot, with not as much grace as he hoped, sat down next her also staying silent. He didn't look at her, instead he looked at the interesting choice of tiles that composed the floor of the hospital. After a few minutes, he slowly crept closer to Amelia who was still crying into her hands. Seeing as there was no reaction from her to pull away, he brought his arm around her shoulders and brought her in close. At first she was stiff, but relaxed into the sideways embrace and cried into his shoulder.
He decided to speak when her cries slowed and her breathing started to return to normal.
"Tell me what's going through your head kid." When he saw she was hesitant to talk he continued, "it'll make you feel better, I'm a really good listener, one of many of my fantastic qualities," with a happy tone to his voice that got a little smile from the emotionally distressed girl.
"Ever since he left, I would make up stories about why he left; he was saving a child from a fire, he was saving the world, destroying evil. I hoped one day I could track him down and we could have that great relationship we had before he left. When, when Rob, my stepfather would beat me, I always had that hope that my father would walk through the door and save me. And now, I don't know, I just was relying on those hopes for so long that for them to be proven wrong, to even think that he was capable of doing that to my mom, it just hurts. It's stupid really but..."
"No it isn't stupid. That's just your love for him. And I promise that if you want to when we find him, you can talk to him. But I think we should be getting back to Liv, the only reason she didn't come after you with me is because of your brother."
Elliot stood, slowly, realizing how old his was getting and how his limbs didn't work as they used to when Amelia jokingly said, "Someone's getting old I see."
"Hey, I'm not old. I'm just getting tired."
"Yeah right, think what you want old man," Amelia replied with a playful tone to her words and a smile on her face.
"Come on kid," Elliot said, with a smile on his face that matched Amelia's.
