Kairu and I glanced at each other and nodded. I stood and addressed everyone.
"You all know that Kairu and I first met you when you were all in that abandoned town fighting Azula. Uncle and Zuko never asked about my past, maybe because they both didn't want questions about their past either, but you guys might have asked Kairu about herself a lot, where did we come from, who were are parents, so on and so forth. I know from Sokka that she asked that you wait until the two of us were reunited to explain. Well, you may get more questions than answers when we do explain. You see, Kairu and I aren't from this world."
I was met by shocked, maybe a little disbelieving silence before Toph spoke up. "She's not lying."
"How is that possible?" Sokka scoffed.
"You are aware of the Spirit World," I told him. "You were taken by Hei Bai into the Spirit World."
"How'd you know that?"
"Because the Spirit world brought us here to help, essentially." I said with all the seriousness I could. "You know Kairu is an Earth Bender, but no one but Uncle, Hakoda, and Kairu knows that I am a Spirit Bender."
"What?" Katara said, a little disbelievingly still. "Why does my dad know? You barely met him."
"When we were escaping the Boiling Rock," I said, turning to Sokka, Suki, and Zuko. "Did you notice a spirit helping you?"
They all looked a bit uncomfortable. "Yeah," Sokka admitted. "We thought we were going crazy, but we didn't let that stop us."
I nodded. "There are a few types of people who can travel to other worlds. They are called Angels. Both Kairu and I are Angels."
"That's cool!" Aang said, smiling still. "Do you have any awesome powers?"
"Yeah," I winked at Aang. "We both have wings and have super healing powers."
"That is pretty cool." Suki admitted. "Can we see them?"
"Sure." I shrugged. "You might want to back up though, they're pretty big."
Everyone gathered around the other side of the fire to give me space as I opened my wings.
"Wow!" Everyone breathed as I put my wings back inside me.
"Wait," Aang broke in. "You said you were a Spirit Bender right? What exactly does that mean?"
"That I can call upon spirits and ask for wisdom and help. That spirit that helped us escape? She was an Angel too. She helped Avatar Kyoshi during the war of her time."
"So you can command spirits? That'll help a lot during battles!" Sokka said, his brain practically whirling.
"Um, no." I deadpanned. "I can't control or command spirits to do what I want. I ask them to help me. They can refuse to help and there's nothing I can do but call another spirit and see if that spirit will help me. I pretty much just tie them to this plane of existence until they're done with their job."
"My head hurts just thinking of all this." Toph groaned, massaging her temples.
"That's how I felt when I first learnt all of this." I laughed. "But I've had a lot more time getting used to it though."
"Do you think you can teach me how to connect with the Spirit World?" Aang asked.
"That's pretty much what the Spirit I first talked to told me. I'm supposed to help you learn more about the Spirit World."
"Great!"
"Mmm."
"So," Zuko spoke. "Is that how you knew I'd go back to the Fire Nation?"
I nodded.
"What are you talking about?" Katara cut in angrily.
"When we were in Ba Sing Se, right before I left to free Appa, I was annoyed with all the secrecy about her past. She said she would eventually tell me, but first there would be a time where I would lose my way. She promised to tell me when I found my path again."
"The spirits don't know everything," I said. "But they do know some things that will happen, and I knew you would eventually turn to help Aang."
"You said the spirits don't know anything," Katara said angrily. "So how do you know he won't betray you again?"
Before I could say anything, Katara got up and walked away. Zuko got up, but I followed Katara before he could. She was standing by the edge of the sea, arms folded. I went and stood beside her.
"I don't."
"What?"
"I don't know for sure that be won't betray me. But I trust him not to. He's made giant mistakes, yes, I'm pretty sure we all know that, but instead of continuing with what he knows it wrong, he chooses to do what's right. You blame him for your mother's death, but he is not to blame."
"Yes he is!" Katara growled. "The Fire Nation is to blame for all of what they've done! How dare you-"
I turned to her, my eyes blazing. "Katara of the Southern Water Tribe, listen to me and listen good. You need to take care of whatever hatred resides in your soul. Not all of the Fire Nation is evil, just as everyone else is good. There are good and evil inside everyone, something you are denying in Zuko. If you don't get rid of that hatred, it will fester inside you, and you will be consumed with evil. Ask Zuko to help you on your quest. He knows who is to blame. But if you find the man responsible for your mother's death, do not let your hatred consume you."
Katara stared at me, a little fear in her eyes as I turned and walked away before I said anything else.
The next day, Katara and Zuko left on their trip.
"I need to borrow Appa." Katara told Aang forcefully.
"Why? Is it your turn to take a little fieldtrip with Zuko?" Aang asked.
"Yes. It is."
"O-okay..." Aang stuttered. "What's going on?"
"We're going to find the man who took my mother from me."
"Sokka told me about the story of your mother. I know who did it and where to find him." Zuko told us.
"What do you think this will accomplish?" Aang asked slowly.
"She has hate within her heart." I cut in. "She needs to confront this man before it consumes her soul. Katara blames the Fire Nation for killing her mother. She cannot get past this and sees everyone from the Fire Nation as evil. Katara's soul is burdened by her mother's death. She needs this Aang, and not just for closure."
"This sounds like revenge to me." Aang said.
"Maybe." I conceded. "But Katara, remember what I said. Do not let this hatred turn closure into murder, otherwise it makes you no better than what that man did to you, no matter what he has done."
"I will remember Kairi." Katara said, thinking on my words.
"Good luck." I said before walking away.
A day or two later Katara and Zuko returned. I was sitting on the dock watching the sun set alone when Katara came up and sat down next to me.
"You were right."
"I know. I'm proud you did the right thing"
"I wanted to do it. I wanted to take out all my anger on him, all my hatred. But I couldn't. I'm not sure if it's because I was weak enough not to, or strong enough to resist."
"You were strong enough not to. The hatred in your heart has receded. Your spirit is healed through your confrontation, or at least it has begun healing. You might not ever forgive the man of killing your mother, but by allowing Zuko, a fire bender to accompany you, you have begun to forgive not only Zuko, but the Fire Nation innocent as well." I said.
"Thank you Kairi." Katara hugged me.
"Always."
I am sooooooo sorry this is late :( College is a bitch...
