That night, Will barely got any sleep. His dreams consisted of either nightmares of that night or of Sonny walking away from him over and over again. And every time he was thrown awake, his body screamed out in pain and he would have trouble breathing. Halfway through the night, he cried in agony and frustration, finally giving in to his body's plea for relief and took the pain medicine prescribed to him so he didn't feel any pain. The relief he got after an hour from the pain medication felt so good, and that made him cry again. He was afraid of being reliant of the pain medicine, and he knew that his family had a history of substance abuse. He remembered having the pain medicine after he had been shot, and the fog he felt under when he took them. He didn't want that to happen again, but since Ari was not with him and he was alone for a day or two, he decided it would be okay to take some.
A few hours later, he was awoken by a banging on his door. He tried to ignore it, as the fog was not really lifted and he still felt like he needed to sleep longer. But the banging did not stop after a few minutes, and before he could truly think, he got up out of bed and quickly shuffled to the door, opening it and being shocked to see Sonny on the other side.
"Sonny?"
Sonny was equally shocked to see Will when he opened the door. He could immediately tell that he had woken Will up, even though it was almost noon. But the thing that concerned him even further was the fact that Will's face was tear streaked, and since Will was not wearing a shirt, Sonny saw the bruises, cuts and the wrapped ribs. He knew that Will was hurt, but it was another thing to actually see the physical evidence. It stunned him for a moment, and he forgot for a moment why he was actually there.
"Hey."
Will began to get nervous and uncomfortable, a common feeling lately for him, especially when he was around Sonny. "What are you doing here?"
Sonny took a deep breath. "I was trying to call you. I wanted to see if you were okay and wanted to get a bite to eat with me and Ari."
Will was taken aback. Sonny wanted to get something to eat with him? Why? He suddenly felt really cold and looked down and realized he was not wearing a shirt, so Sonny could see all his bruises and cuts. He quickly grabbed a jacket to wrap around him so Sonny couldn't continue to see, but it was too late.
"Will, you don't have to cover up."
Ignoring his comment, Will zipped up the jacket and said, "Look, I just woke up, so while I appreciate the offer, I think I'm going to decline. If you want to drop off Ari later, let me know."
Sonny sighed, wishing he could figure out a way to get past all the awkwardness that was surrounding their relationship. He decided to bypass all the small talk and get straight to the point of why he was truly there to see Will.
"Will, are you okay?"
"What? Yeah, I'm fine."
Sonny sighed in frustration. "Don't lie to me, Will. I know something is wrong. I can see it, you are hurt."
Will began to get defensive. "You don't know anything. I am fine, Sonny. I didn't sleep well last night, but I'm fine."
"Why didn't you sleep well?" Sonny couldn't help but to question what was going on with Will. He could see Will was trying to keep his emotions in check and wanted Sonny to leave him alone, but something in Sonny refused to leave.
"Why do you care? We are divorced, remember? You don't get to ask me that anymore."
Sonny was thrown by Will's vicious comment, and it caused his own anger to rise up. "Trust me, Will, I remember. Don't forget whose fault that was."
Will couldn't believe Sonny actually said that to him. He had tried for weeks to make up for the mistakes he made, but it was obvious that no matter what he did, he was never going to be forgiven.
"Thank you so much for reminding me of that, again. God, Sonny, you know I tried so hard, but it doesn't matter, does it? Nothing I did or will ever do is going to make up for what I did."
Sonny ran his hands through his hair, frustrated at himself for arguing with Will over something unimportant that the moment. "Dammit, Will, I didn't come here to argue with you!"
"Then why did you come here? I didn't ask you to!"
"I wanted to talk to you! I know something is wrong, and I wanted to find out what is going on!"
Maybe it was the lack of sleep, or the fact that Will was still feeling the effects of the medicine, but before he could stop himself, he went off on Sonny. "You want to talk? I spent weeks begging you to talk to me, and you continued to ignore me. You would go and talk to Paul as much as he wanted, but god forbid you talk to your husband, the man you claim to love. I get it, I hurt you, I'm a whore, and I deserve every bad thing that has happened to me. I don't need you coming around here to remind me of what I lost. Okay?! You are free. I'm done trying to get you back. Just leave me alone and be with the man you truly want to be with."
Sonny was stunned at the comments Will was throwing at him. He knew Will was picking a fight with him, but he just didn't understand why.
Will angrily wiped the tears that had started running down his face. "Just go, Sonny. Today is not a good day." He opened up the door to let Sonny out and was startled by Marlena approaching.
She could immediately tell something was wrong. "Is everything okay?"
Will sighed. He could just not win. "Yeah, Sonny was just leaving."
But Sonny was not ready to give up. "Will, I know something is wrong. Please, just talk to me. You are right; I did not want to listen before. But I am here now. Talk to me."
Marlena walked into the room and looked back and forth between Will and Sonny. She knew that Will would be having a hard time today, so he would not be receptive to people ganging up on him, but she also knew that he needed to start facing and dealing with what happened to him. She was surprised at seeing Sonny with Will, considering their damaged relationship, but Sonny was always the one who could get through to Will when others couldn't. But since their divorce, Sonny had distanced himself from Will in an effort to move on, and while Marlena could not blame Sonny, she couldn't help but wish that he had tried harder with Will. She knew the two of them loved each other, and Will needed someone now more than ever.
But Will was not willing to give Sonny any openings. The wounds were still too fresh, and despite the fact that he wanted to tell Sonny and have Sonny make him feel better, he also wanted to just be left alone and try to figure out how to move on with his life. "You should be with Ari. Today is your day with her."
Sonny sighed. "She is with my mom. She is fine. But you are not."
Marlena jumped in. "Will, I think you need to take a deep breath and try to relax."
Will snapped back. "What I need is for him to leave me alone." He angrily turned back to Sonny. "For weeks I tried to talk to you. I begged you to forgive me. I begged you to try and find a way to make our marriage work. But you couldn't. Or you just didn't want to anymore. And I get it. I let you go so you could be happy. But don't come to me now and tell me you want to talk to me. I don't need you now. I needed you before. It's too late now."
With that, Will stumbled back into the bathroom and slammed the door, needing to get away from Sonny before he spilled everything that had happened to him and begged Sonny to make everything okay again. He couldn't do that. He needed to deal with this on his own.
While he logically knew it wasn't right to be angry at Sonny, he found that the anger he had shown and lashing out at Sonny actually helped him stay focused. A part of him was angry that Sonny refused to try and work things out, and yet he still seemed to want to be friends with Paul. It only reinforced the idea with Will that he was the second choice for Sonny, only a placeholder, until Sonny's real love came back. Will was the one who cheated, but he wondered if Sonny was only looking for an excuse to finally divorce Will.
Sonny stared at the closed bathroom door for a moment and then looked over at Marlena, who did not seem all that shocked over Will's outburst. In fact, he could tell she was very worried about him. Sonny didn't understand the anger that was coming from Will, and why he was so interested in keeping Sonny at a distance. Things had changed between them, but didn't Will understand that Sonny still loved Will and would probably do anything for him?
Marlena sighed. "Will is going through a really tough time right now, Sonny."
"What is going on? I can tell something happened to him."
Marlena wished she could tell Sonny what was going on, since she knew he would be there for Will, but Will had begged her not to tell anyone, so she could not break that promise. "I'm sorry, Sonny, but I can't tell you. Just understand that something happened to him, and he is having a really hard time dealing with it."
Sonny bit his lip, unsure of what to do. He looked pleadingly at Marlena, hoping she would be able to give him some answers, but her face remained neutral. He felt so conflicted about the whole situation. He wanted to know what happened to Will, but wasn't the point of the divorce that they no longer knew the little details of each other's lives?
Sonny sighed and rubbed his face in resignation. He was lost and had no idea what to do. The pain in Will's voice hurt him, and made him want to pull Will's into his arms and never let go. He smiled weakly at Marlena and looked at the bathroom door in pain before quietly walking out of the apartment.
Marlena sighed again. Her heart broke for both Will and Sonny. She wished that Will would open up about what had happened, but she knew that it had only been a week and the pain was compounded by the fact that he and Sonny were divorced. Will felt alone, and was closing himself off to anyone who tried to reach out to him.
She quietly knocked on the door. "Will? Sonny left. Can you please come out here?"
She didn't hear anything for a moment, and then the water was running, as if someone turned on the sink. A moment later it was turned off, and then Will opened the door. His face held no tears, but she could see the stress from the confrontation on Will's face. He stood in the doorway of the bathroom, clutching at his arms and looking everywhere but her.
"You look tired."
Will shrugged. "I haven't been able to sleep much this week. Nightmares."
Marlena had a feeling Will had not been sleeping much. "Do you want to talk about the nightmares?"
Will shrugged, too tired to fight her. "It's the same over and over. Those three guys coming up to me, beating me, pulling off my clothes, doing what they did. Sometimes there is a crowd watching, sometimes I am alone and screaming for help. But it ends the same. Me laying on the ground in pain and those guys laughing at me."
Will slumped down on the bed in resignation. "I wish I could just sleep for awhile."
"Do you want to try sleeping pills? I can get you a prescription for one that would prevent nightmares, or Kayla can."
Will sighed. "I can't when I am with Ari. What if she wakes up in the middle of the night and needs me? If I take the pills, I'm afraid I won't wake up if she calls out."
"You don't have to take them every night if you don't want to. You can take them on the nights when you don't have Ari."
Will still was unsure. He did not want to feel out of control or under the influence of medication.
Marlena could still read the indecision. She decided to try another approach. "Maybe if you start to talk about what happened, you might be able to sleep better."
Will sighed. "I just want to move on. Talking about that night is not going to change anything."
"No, but you can get justice. Will, you were raped. It is not your fault. No matter what anyone says or what you are telling yourself in your mind, you did not deserve to be beaten by three men and then raped. I will keep telling you that as many times as you need to hear it. You did not deserve this to happen."
Will stared at the ground while Marlena talked, and she carefully went over and gently lifted his chin to cause him to look at her.
"You are a good person, Will Horton. I love you, and no matter what you do, that is not going to change. You made a mistake, and that cost you your marriage, but don't ever think for a moment that you deserve to be treated like dirt. You are a good father to Ari, and you have people that love and care about you. Even Sonny. It is okay to let some people back in."
With that, she turned, opened the door, and walked out of the apartment to give Will some time to think about what she said. As she closed the door however, she was startled by a figure standing in the hallway, who had a pale look on their face as they had heard everything that was said in the apartment through the wall.
"Will was raped?"
Author's note- Cliffhanger! Who should it be that heard Will was raped?
