Chapter 10
She had never been woken up so many times in the middle of the night before. But at the same time, she had never really felt so alive. Was this what it felt like to finally be with the man you love after waiting for years? She snuggled under the covers to keep warm and immediately noted the absence of a warm body next to her. She sat up and looked around the room. It was empty, and she felt an irrational panic well up.
Had she been a horrible lover? Had she pushed him too far last night? Had that scared him off? What if he just left her, like Ryoto did to Emi? What if-
The shoji slid open and she turned frightened eyes to her red-haried lover. He was beside her in an instant and she wrapped her arms around his neck. "What's wrong koishii? Did something happen?" He felt no presence in the room. Nothing strange.
I keep thinking about Emi, she wanted to say. I keep thinking you are like Ryoto and I can't bear to have you leave me like that. But she simply shook her head. "You weren't here when I woke up" she said. "I just got a little scared."
He kissed her forehead and held her tight. "Gomen, Koishii. I was making breakfast, that I was." She buried her face into the juncture between his neck and shoulder. "Gomen koishii" he apologized again.
"Its okay Kenshin. I was just a bit tired is all. You don't need to worry." She gently bit his neck. "I'm hungry though. Perhaps I should eat you." Green eyes playfully looked up to his.
Kenshin grinned, his eyes turning amber again. "Perhaps I should let you." One hand moved down her back slowly. "Perhaps I should eat you too." His other hand moved to her chin and lifted it so he could kiss her. All of a sudden, Kaoru's stomach growled. Her face turned red as her blue eyes closed in embarrassment. Kenshin chuckled, and let out a pained breath when she punched his gut. "Or we can get breakfast now." He wrapped her in a blanket from the futon and lifted her. He carried her to the kitchen where her favorite breakfast dishes were laid out. Her stomach growled again, muffled by the blanket, but she paid no mind to it. He set her down and she worked to get her arm out. The blanket fell down, covering her chest only because her arm clamped it to her.
She worked her other arm out, careful to keep the blanket tucked under both arms. She lifted a chopstick and glanced at Kenshin. "Arigatou for making breakfast, Kenshin." She put her hands together and bowed her head. "Itadakimasu." She reached forward to evenly distribute the food, but Kenshin's hand stopped her.
"Let me koishii." He quickly gave her food and they were soon devouring their breakfast together. Kenshin finished first, the one that never needed much to make him full. Instead he watched Kaoru as she ate. The way she looked when she was enjoying the fruits of his labor made him happy. He thought back to last night. His labor was indeed appreciated last night. She had looked so beautiful by the moonlight… the way her blush stained skin stood out against the usual white… the way her lithe body arched against his…
She glanced at Kenshin and noticed him watching. Feeling shy, she slowly put down her chopsticks. "wh-what?"
He seemed to realize that he was staring rather intensely at her. He blinked and smiled. "Iie koishi." He leaned forward and kissed her forehead. "I was just thinking of last night."
She blushed bright red. She didn't know what to say to that, so she resorted to her defense mechanism. "Kenshin you baka!" Her fist connected with his palm. He wasn't going to play the clueless rurouni that let her punch him. Instead, his hand caught hers and she found herself pulled forward. His lips connected with hers. Her eyes widened as he deepened the kiss. His tongue lightly brushed against her lips, pushing through to her mouth as she gasped in surprise.
He quickly pulled away, making her gasp for breath. There was a small smirk on his face as he pulled away and watched her gasp for breath. She had to lean her head against his chest. She turned to breath the scent of him in before smacking his shoulder playfully. He laughed and pulled her up so she was sitting on his lap. "Kaoru, I have a very important question to ask you, so would you like to go out for a walk today?"
Her expression immediately brightened. "Of course!" She kissed his cheek and stood up with the blanket. "Let me get changed." She walked quickly to her room, already anticipating a nice walk in a nice kimono. She always enjoyed her walks with him. It was calming and made her feel a little closer to him. She smiled and let go of the blanket as she stepped towards her chest of kimonos. She found her under sash and her eyes turned green for a moment.
Her eyes turned to the sword that was leaning against the wall by her dresser. She turned back to the chest and green eyes scanned the chest of raggedy kimonos that lay there. The girl had much preferred gi and hakama, as her chest didn't hold much. She held up a light blue kimono with a darker sash. These would bring out her eyes nicely. She rummaged through the chest some more, and moved to the dresser.
It didn't take long for her to get dressed. Years of doing so proved to be useful, even when putting on gi and hakama were much easier. She completed her intricate tie and smoothed the wrinkles out of the fabric. She didn't remember having this kimono, but she was glad anyway. It brought out her eyes nicely. She thought of tying her hair more nicely, but she would rather quickly go on that walk with Kenshin. And he had already seen her with her hair down… She had quick flashes of images from last night, seeing them almost as if she was outside of her body, looking down at entangled bodies…
She blushed at the memory and hurried out of her room. Kaoru no hentai, she reprimanded herself. Bad thoughts. Bad thoughts. Bad thoughts. In the process of mentally reprimanding herself, she found herself running right into the arms of the man she was thinking about. The fading red in her cheeks flared back to life. "Gomen Kenshin."
"Aa, it was my fault koishii." He lightly kissed her cheek. She dared not look him in the eye and he tilted his head questioningly. "Well koishii, let's go for that walk." He took her hand and led her out to the gate. She tangled their fingers together, but would not dare look him in the eye. He frowned but tugged her close to his body as they walked towards the river. He stood there, breathing in the scent of water before turning to Kaoru. His eyes flashed amber for a second. He looked over her shoulder, tensing as if he felt something, and then there was nothing. He felt a little confused but concentrated harder. Still, there was nothing, so he let it go. His eyes returned to normal and he gazed at Kaoru.
She was staring up at him. "What's wrong Kenshin?"
He lifted his hand to stroke her soft cheek. "Nothing koishii" he said. She frowned but patted the hand on her face.
"Okay Kenshin." Her eyes pulled him in. He could see something there. Something deep inside her that she was keeping from him. It was hidden, but a part of him knew it was there. He wanted to study it, but Kaoru closed her eyes and sighed. "Come Kenshin, let's walk." His hand slowly dropped from her cheek and she turned around. She began walking along the riverside, her back facing him. There was that sudden sense of unease again. There was nothing around, but it made him nervous. There was something wrong going on.
He turned his attention back to Kaoru's retreating back. He felt like something wrong was going on. Something is happening. Did he really want to lose any chance of being with her forever? Did he want to just let her disappear from him one day? The sudden dread in his gut threatened to release the chains he had over his inner self. His godlike speed took him to her. She let out a sound of surprise as he stopped in front of her.
"K-Kenshi-"
"Kaoru! Will you marry me?"
"E-ehh! N-nani-"
"Kaoru." He took her hand and pressed his forehead against hers. "Will you marry me?" He squeezed the hand he held, desperately hoping for her answer. Desperately hoping for her to let him protect her, hide her, do anything to keep her safe.
She could see the swirl of emotions he usually tried to hide with his eyes. She stared at the sight before her. His darker side just barely held under control. He had never scared her, not even during his many fights but this…. This was extreme and fast-paced and… "I…"
Her thoughts started going in a different direction, almost as if led by anger. Why isn't she saying yes? Why is she still prolonging the moment? She should be happy. Happy that there is someone out there devoted to her. Devoted to her like she is devoted to him. Other men out there, they aren't honorable. They aren't like Kenshin! They lie and cheat and run! All they could do is hurt others. They are bastards! Bastards like-
Kenshin felt it again. No. This was different. His eyes widened. This presence was faint, and angry. Very angry. This one felt dangerous. It lingered before disappearing quickly. He quickly turned around, trying to look for any sign that someone else was there. He let go of her hand-
And she quickly grabbed it again. Pulling him back towards her, she quickly leaned her weight on him. With her face buried in the crook of his neck and shoulder, she nodded. "I'll marry you Kenshin. Yes. I'll marry you."
In his confused state of mind, it took him longer to process than he would have liked. "You…you will?" She said yes? She said…. "You said yes…" His hands went to her shoulder and slightly pushed her away. "You said yes…" Kaoru, confused, just stared up at him. A red blush slowly crawled up his face as he stared at her bewildered blue eyes. And he burst into a huge smile as he grabbed her by the waist and lifted her up. "You said yes!" He laughed and put her down to kiss her.
A startled giggle bubbled in her throat and she soon found herself in his arms and on their way home.
Later that night, Kaoru sighed and pressed her ear against her new fiancé's chest. "I love you Kenshin."
"I love you Kaoru" he sleepily murmured. He kissed the top of her head and fell asleep, tired from their activities of the day. Which consisted mostly of themselves staying in the futon or eating a quick meal. Kaoru could safely say that she felt sated in more ways than one. She fell asleep to the steady beating of Kenshin's heart.
It had been simple to possess the woman Ryoto had claimed to love. Her anger fueled the extent of her powers. She had been quick to let the man enjoy the carnal pleasures of loving a woman. He seemed to be the same as when they were together. And he had not even noticed the beautiful green eyes that eyed him with anger.
As soon as he felt he was sated, he lie in bed, arms wrapped around the woman. She looked up at him, mesmerizing him with green eyes. "Ryoto?"
"Mmm?"
"Do you love me?"
"I could never love another like I love you."
She suddenly slipped from his futon and he lifted his head to watch her. She turned around and tried for a smile. "I'll be right back."
He nodded and fell back in bed. She slowly padded back to the bed and he heard the familiar sound of a sword being pulled from the its sheath. He quickly turned but it was too late.
The woman stood over him, the sword piercing through his heart, but he could recognize the eyes now. It was not the eyes of the woman, but the woman of someone who was supposed to be long dead. The one he had murdered with his own hand.
"Emi…"
"Let me remind you, I hate you. I hate you so much, because I loved you so much. You did this. You brought this onto yourself. I hate you Ryoto. And this woman will pass on the story of how my love became your death, because she loved you too. She loved you even as you were playing with our heart."
She pulled the sword from his chest and watched as the life left his eyes and she let the woman go. She no longer had a need for her. But she didn't feel complete. Her anger was still deep in her heart. Instead, she found herself lingering behind, never feeling accomplished. Then the sword was passed on, to more men like Ryoto, and she found herself taking control of those poor women, the ones who were having theirheart broken. After she killed the men, she felt nothing. She still felt anger, even after helping those women, but soon it didn't matter. All men were despicable. There was surely no man that could ever be faithful his whole life. No, she had to end suffering before it happened. She had to protect those woman, protect their hearts, like she wished someone had protected hers.
