CHAPTER 10

"Bring as many of them down as you can, your our last line of defense. This is your sacred duty"

Was the only order Gideon gave as the demons attacked them.

"Kill them all. Bring me the Queen."

"They will not give her up without a fight."

"I want her alive. If they want her back, they won't risk her life for a soulless creature."

With a nod, Zuriel went on to spread the orders of his master to the rest of the horde. Finding Helek by the entrance of the Institute. Filling him in on the orders.

"If the battle comes here, kill them all. The masters new army will rise soon enough"

Thousands of demons flooding down the streets in an epic battle. The night sky grew to a nasty color. For the demons who were struck down by each swing of a Gargoyles weapon. Sending there bodies into charred bones and dust. Their damned souls returning to back to the depths of hell they were summoned from. The smell of old blood hung heavy in the air as the battle raged on.

From her window she could faintly see where he own people were lost. Their angel souls being ascended to heaven. Where they can never return. How many of them were the ones she called close friends? Keziah? Ophir? Her mother? Gideon? Her heart ache for each one of them. They were her family and even though she was their Queen, she needed to be out there fighting with them.

Grabbing her double arm blades and unlocking the lock, she made her way to the cathedral. The sounds of bombs were echoing in the halls and corridors. She wouldn't let it discourage her for her mission. She would pray to the Angel to protect her people, defending herself if needed. Pausing to stop near a towers opening to get a better view. So much destruction and it fueled an anger in her she never thought possible.

As the battle seemed to raged through the city streets like a fire without cause. Gideon grabbed one, slamming its body upon one of the steeples. Taking off to take down more as it burned into ash. Fire balls danced in the air as they fought hard. Turning every demon in reach into another heap of burning ash. Being greatly outnumbered, the Cathedral was slowly over run. Groups of demons raged though the halls. Even with aid from the creature, Adam, it looked like they were losing their long fought battle.

"Gideon!" One of the Gargoyles who had returned to their human form called to him. He and two others were physically restraining the once female body of a demon. Its snarled like a rabid beast

'she' struggled against their stone grip.

"This one has a message for you, from Zuriel."

Transforming back in human form as well. Gripping the tattered collar of her shirt, bringing it closer to him.

"Tell me this message. NOW!" The words roared from his chest.

Leonore was taking prayers in the Cathedral. Praying for the forgiveness of her actions and for victory in this war. The stained glass walls and ceiling that used to have a beautiful glow, now were black and disfigured. Standing, she rose to leave to check on the warriors who stayed behind to guard the Queen, her daughter.

Stepping just outside the door, she managed to stop passing guards before they turned a corner.

"Tell me, have they managed to get inside?" A small worried tone slipped from her lips before she could catch it.

"No, They have managed to hit a few towers but have been quickly extinguished."

"What about the Queen?" Leonore gripped the edge of the door, turning her knuckles white.

"Still locked in her chambers, as to my knowledge."

"Much relief from your words. I thank you. Now go and help the others."

Stepping back into the room, closing the door. She let out a heavy site of relief and made her way back to the alter to pray. Like a bomb going off the huge stained glass window behind the altar rained colored glass around her. Grabbing hold of her neck as it it slammed her into the floor, pinning her to it. Leaving a small crater where she lay. Without true reason the mass of demons started retreating from the cathedral.

"My master has big plans for you, your majesty. The Prince will be very pleased."

Not wanting to correct him for fear he would kill her and take Sonora instead. She half went willingly. Just as fast as he came, back through the shard and shattered window, they were gone.

With blades ready, Sonora continued on her way. Cutting down a few stray demons who tried to block her path. Quickly entering the Cathedrals alter room. Locking the huge doors behind her. Before taking in the horrible site before her. Huge shards of colored glass, stone and steel littered the once beautiful room.

"Mother? Where are you? Are you in here?" Her voice echoing with no answer.

Crossing the room, careful not to step on anything. She knelt on the remnants of the altar. If she was going to die, she wanted it to be on the very altar she pledged her life on, for her people. Without shedding her blades, she dropped to her knees, closing her eyes tightly. Tears swelled as she fought them back between her words to the Angels. With the chaos blazing outside and around her she didn't hear him approaching. Still transformed he flew chastely through the already destroyed window. As he landed, transformed into human form. Slowly taking in the scene before him.

The site of her catches his eye, making his heart race. Rushing to her, she raises in a spin with blades ready. Stopping just short of his chest. Her teary eyes wide in shock at what she had almost done. He never faltered or flinched, simply stood there. His blue eyes like eyes. Dropping her blades, she trembled into his arms.

"I thought you were one of them."

Hugging her close to his chest. Hearing the pounding of his heart through his armor.

"Well lucky for me, your beautiful and smart." A small small of relief as he gripped her tighter before pulling back enough to look at her. - "Are you alright?"

"I'm fine."

"Were you fighting in here?

Shaking her head. "I found it like this, and I can't find my mother."

"The demons are on a mission. Bring the Queen to their master."

"I think they took her thinking she was you."

"What, Wait, Why?"

Were the only words she could get out. Gideon kissed her forehead as he lead her away from the altar.

"Because they want me to bring them the creature in exchange for you. But the creature has escaped."

Wiping tears from her face. Trying to regain her composure. One of her hands resting on her stomach, hoping it would help settle the growing sick feeling.

"How do we get her back?If the creature escaped?"

"I'm going to give them Frankenstein's journal."

"Its in the vault. Items that cannot be removed or replaced. It would be a sacrilege."

"I know. But its the only piece of leverage we have if we want to get her back."

Sonora dropped her head, stepping away, wanting nothing more then to stare at the floor. He was right, with Adam gone, they had no other leverage. They didn't even know how many of them they'd lost. Clutching the hand on her stomach tighter. The pain of losing those close to her was becoming unbearable. Closing the distance, using the side of his finger lifted her face to look at him. Placing the other upon the one she had on her stomach.

"Are you sure your alright? Were you hurt?"

"I fought only a few of them. I wasn't hurt."

"Then why?" Squeezing the the hand above her stomach gently.

"There are things we should discuss later. This isn't the time nor place, my love." Giving him a small smile for assurance. She couldn't tell him her suspicions about herself just yet. She didn't know if he had yet heard rumors, or if he did hear and just ignored it. She couldn't let him know. She had to see that he came back to her.

Bringing both her hands to his lips before walking over to the lock in the floor. Using his ax blades he unlocked the vault. The altar rumbled to lift and slide apart, revealing the stone spiral stair case that lead to its protected contents. Leading her down the stairs hand and hand, using a candle to light the way. Leaning against a wall, she watched him. Opening a small chest and retrieving the weathered book.

"May God forgive me." he said walking over to her. Cupping his face in her hands, she kissed him deeply. If there was a chance he didn't come back...she didn't want to think about it.

"No, may God forgive us for allowing this book to leave."

"I will be back, and I will bring her back. Just please forgive me for what I'm about to do."

"What are you about to do?" I small shudder of fear ran through her.

"I can't fight, unless I know your safe." Not allowing her to protest, he slammed his lips to hers. Pressing her hard against the stone wall. Before she knew it the heat from him was gone. Leaving her with an empty chill. Hearing the stone alter closing above her, it took her a minute to understand what he did.

"Gideon! You can't lock me in here!" Screaming til her throat felt raw. Sitting on the spiral steps, she sighed in defeat, she knew he was gone, nor could he hear her. No one could. All she could do was sit and wait. Expecting the worse and hoping for the best. Knowing she couldn't be mad at him for his actions, he loved her, and no matter what he would do anything to protect her.

Once the altar closed hiding away the hidden staircase. He transformed. Glancing back at the altar one last time before flying out the shattered window. Getting a birds eye view he could see the remaining demons look to be retreating. Taking down a few more before going to the abandoned theater, where Zuriel was holding Leonore captive.

Momentarily disarming himself against his better judgment before entering the crumbling building. Unknown to him that Adam had received a similar message was not far behind. Busting through the domed ceiling Transforming into his human form as he landed on the strewn debris inside of the theater.

"Stay where you are Gideon!" Zuriel shouted from an old stage, restraining Leonore. He was prepared to kill her without a second thought.

Gideon stared at Leonore in disbelief. "Your majesty." So calmly it almost sounded like a question.

"You should not have come." Leonore responded.

"Weapons!" Zuriel shouted at Gideon, tightening his grip on Leonore.

Slowly turning, to show he truly was without weapons. "I am unarmed. As you instructed."

"Where is Frankenstein's creature?"

"I no longer know. When I returned to the cathedral, it had already escaped."

Angry, Zuriel quickly placed a clawed hand around Leonore's neck. Her neck glowed slightly, as if it knew she could die.

"WAIT!" Screamed Gideon, lifting up the journal. , "I have brought something else."

"Gideon, No." Leonore stared at him with shock and disbelief.

"This is the private scientific journal of Dr. Victor Frankenstein. We found it on Frankenstein's body the night we rescued the creature almost two hundred years ago. It contains in detail, how Victor Frankenstein conceived and then constructed his unholy abomination. And I pray that it may save my Queen now."

Zuriel's blood red eyes followed Gideon as he stepped closer to the stage.

"Gideon, I command you. Take the journal and leave from this place and let me ascend."

As if he were ignoring her words. Deep down he know she would sacrifice herself for the greater good. But he had promised His Queen, he would return with her mother.

Shoving Leonore by her neck off the stage, so he could get his hands on the journal. Gideon caught her just before she hit the ground. Not wanting to stick around any longer, sprouted his wings and carried her out of there. Collecting his battle ax before putting distance between them and demons.

Unknowing to any of them Adam lurked in the shadows, and chased after Zuriel. Descending four demons along the way. Leading him back to the Wessex Institute. He was going to find out what Naberius had planned. Why they wanted him and the journal of his creator.

Once back at the Cathedral, Gideon left Leonore near the altar. Gathering reports of how many they had lost in the battle. Collecting the scapulars of the lost. Before heading back to report back and release Sonora from the vault.

Entering, he found Leonore standing in the middle of the room. Arms crossed over her chest. Anger almost seemed to radiate off of her. Walking around her, he produced his blades from his belt. Sliding them into the lock. Walking to the altar as it slide opened. Preparing for Sonora's anger, as he helped her up the last few steps, before locking it back again.
