She hadn't noticed she'd been staring until he suddenly held up a paper that said HI in thick, bold letters. Emma shook her head and smiled as she waved a little awkwardly at the man in the office across the street.

Taking a break from the numbers, she'd taken to staring out on the street below, at the people at work in the office building across the street, until her gaze landed on a rather handsome face, just one level above her eyesight.

She hadn't even noticed him stand up from his desk, too deeply lost within her thoughts, but then she noticed a flash of white and saw him standing with one hand in the pocket of his pants, and the other holding the paper against the window for her to see.

He grinned as she waved and raised her hand at her I return.

It was the beginning of a series of greetings; a paper that said good morning taped against his window in the morning, a wave when they caught each other's eye. Emma found herself almost looking forward to their stupid little interactions.

Of course Ruby, in the office next to hers, had caught on quickly, and when Emma visited her office to go over some paperwork, she noticed Ruby had her own papers taped to her window. Emma on one paper, and a big arrow pointing at Emma's office on the other.

The next day Emma received a gorgeous bouquet of flowers, addressed to her by name signed by Killian. She couldn't help her smile as she placed them in a vase by her window. He wasn't in his office when she looked across the street, so she taped a thank you to her window.

By the time evening fell, and she got ready to go home, Killian had taped you're welcome to his own.

Their 'conversations' were always short in nature, a how are you or you look lovely the most common ones. Somehow they always missed each other in the mornings or evenings, not that she specifically waited for him to arrive–maybe a little lingering by the door was involved. Ruby often teased her about it, telling her to ask him out and Emma had been quick to take down Ruby's she likes coffee papers when she refused.

Ruby dropped the issue after that… Kind of. Because she did come barging into her office one morning, yanking Emma from her chair and pushing her in front of the window.

She was about to complain loudly, when she noticed Killian's window. Coffee? 12:30?

Her hands shook as she took a paper from her desk and wrote yes before taping it to the glass.

Admittedly, she didn't get much work done that morning; the idea of having coffee with the handsome stranger who sent her flowers once keeping her more busy than her numbers.

She nervously made her way down around 12:25, some of her fellow colleagues wished her luck, or gave her a thumbs up, and she wondered if Ruby had informed them–or if perhaps, they'd seen their little conversations through papers and waves.

Her heart started pounding even harder when she walked through the lobby and saw him standing outside the glass doors, already waiting for her.

The smile he gave her when he noticed her made her legs weak. Oh god, he was even more handsome up close.

"Hi," She whispered, looking up into his incredibly blue eyes.

"Hi," He replied with wide grin.

When they both laughed a little awkwardly she knew he was as nervous as she was, and she found some relief in it. He took her to a little coffee place he knew where they finally had a conversation longer than 'how are you' 'good, you' 'good'–though he did tell her she looked lovely, and it had made her blush.

Emma had always found lunch break to be rather short, but today it seemed to be even shorter.

When they walked back to their respective buildings they exchanged numbers, and though their texts became more and more frequent over time, he never failed to place his good morning sign by his window at the beginning of every day–even when she woke up in his bed.
