I stood outside of Khan's cell once more, tapping my fingers on my arm nervously. I had told him that I would tell him about myself and I keep my promises. I entered the cell and then smiled softly. "Hello."
"Hello Miss Sommers." Khan replied, his tone welcoming. He was so haughty with all of the other people who had come to see him, but they never really wanted to get to know him, they just saw him as a wild animal. Yes, I wanted to get to know him, but there was a slight ulterior motive behind my desire. If I could tame him just a bit, he might not turn on us.
"I brought more food for you hun." I said, holding out the meal for today, which was a rather hearty breakfast. Khan took it and then motioned for me to sit down. "So, I promised to tell you a bit about myself. Where do you want me to start?" I asked.
"Why did you join Starfleet?" Khan asked with a curious tone.
"You started with the easy stuff, makes my job easier. My dunderhead of a cousin as asked to join Starfleet and after abar fight he had just had, I figured that moron would get himself killed. So, I enrolled with him, stayed by his side. He's the only family I got left and I'm gonna make sure he stays alive, even if I have to sacrifice myself." I said fiercely, not realizing that Khan was listening to this and making his mind up about some things.
"Who is your cousin?" He asked, genuinely curious. He hadn't known the rest of us to have any real loyalty anymore. He could tell this ship was different though, everyone had each other's back.
"Captain Kirk." I said, watching Khan's eyes pop out of his head for a second.
"I can see why you've been keeping him safe. He has a knack for getting into horrible situations." Khan said with a chuckle, making a mental note on how to screw with Kirk even more now.
"Yeah that he does, but you don't know why." I said softly. "After his father died making sure everyone on his ship got away safely, his mother gave birth to him. They went back to earth and his mother couldn't take care of him. He reminded her too much of his father. So to my father he went. Now my father, he was abusive, to both me and Kirk. Kirk, well to protect me, he took most of the beatings, which made him act out more and more."
I went to continue but the look of rage on Khan's face was starting to scare me a little. "Your own father abused you? How old were you?" He asked, his voice holding an edge to it.
"From the age of six to 18, the legal age of adulthood. Kirk is only two months younger than me, and before you ask. My mother walked out on my father and I." Khan seemed livid but he stayed in perfect control, even though mine was deteriorating. "The abuse suffered made my cousin and I into two very different people. He acts out because of it, I am timid and soft because of it."
"No one should have to go through that shit at such a young age. You are a very strong woman Katerina." Khan said, calming down slightly.
I blinked, I was not used to getting compliments like this from anyone. "I'm not that strong though." I said, rolling my eyes.
"You are. You could have walked away from your cousin, but you stay by him even today to protect him. Loyalty is very rare for us I've noticed." Khan said, a small amount of anger coming back.
I did something I never thought I'd do, I leaned forward and hugged Khan tightly. He stiffened up before very gently wrapping his arms around me. "Khan, there is always loyalty to some people. I am loyal to my cousin and his crew, but please, try to earn my cousin's trust and he'll help you. I know you just want your family back, and trust me, if anyone can bend and break the rules without getting caught, my cousin can." I said with a small giggle before breaking the hug and standing. "Now get some sleep, I'll be back later."
Thanks for reading! I don't own Star Trek, only Kat. I feel good writing this again, and I do apologize about skipping around like this, but I felt like writing this and then re-writing the nightmare chapter!
