Chapter Ten

"REMUS!" I yell as he continues to ignore me once we reach the common room. I notice that the marauders, Lily, and Alice are the only ones still awake.

The sandy-blond haired boy turns to face me and crosses his arms.

"What do you want me to say?" I ask, raising my arms and dropping them by my sides.

"I don't want you to say anything." Remus replies, his pale green eyes glaring at me. I notice his face looks worn and exhausted; it must be near to the full moon. Our friends are looking over at us in bewilderment now. "I want you to explain why you were kissing Rosier!" Remus yells.

I hear Lily gasp and Sirius stands up, clenching his fists by his sides.

"What?" He asks, his voice is calm but cold; I would rather he yelled.

"I was doing my prefect rounds and I found her and Rosier..." Remus shudders and turns his accusing glare back to me.

"What the hell Marly!" James yells, coming to stand next to Remus. "Did he hurt you?"

"No." Remus replies. "She defended him when I punched the slimy git."

Sirius is staring at me, his grey eyes searching my face for any emotion. When our eyes meet I quickly look away, seeing the hurt and confused expression on his face.

"Why?" James asks, grabbing my arm but I flinch away from his touch.

"It's really none of your business." I reply coldly, storming up the to the girls dormitory. Rosier didn't say anything about not telling them about our engagement however if they found out they would no doubt set up some stupid prank or do something to make Rosier bad. I can't let them risk their lives; this isn't how it used to be. Things are different now.

"Marlene?" Emmeline Vance asks, her mascara is running down her face.

"Have you been... crying?" I ask, sitting down on the bed next to her.

"My older sister was killed at work today." She hiccups, wrapping her thin arms around herself. "She was an auror and there was an attack this morning..."

"It's okay." I reply, awkwardly patting her back.

"Marlene I'm so, so sorry!" I cries, blowing her nose in a tissue I hand her. "I've been such a bitch lately; worrying about boys and such when there's a war going on! People are dying and I was too naive to think it would affect me!"

"Emmeline it's alright, no one really knew how bad this war was getting until recently. You couldn't have saved your sister even if you hadn't been so... horrible this year. What's done is done, you can't change that but you can decide how you go on from here." I say, my voice isn't cold but it isn't very kind either.

"Thank you Marlene." Emmeline sniffles, "I don't know why I even went after Sirius. Everyone can see he's only got eyes for you."

I laugh off Emmeline's statement however I fall asleep with a smile on my face.

When I enter the great hall the next morning Rosier beckons me over to him at the Slytherin table. Begrudgingly I leave Alice's side to go and see what he wants. I've never really been scared of a person before, sure I've been scared off what they might do to the people I love but I've never been scared of somebody before. Not until now.

"Sit." Rosier commands, nodding at the seat next to him.

"What's this Gryffindor bitch doing here?" Travers snarls, pulling out his wand under the table. I'm about to reply when Rosier's hand comes to rest on my leg and he squeezes tightly.

I tense up however I seal my mouth shut. From here I have a clear view of the Gryffindor table and I notice James and Sirius glaring over at the Slytherin table with murderous looks on their faces.

"Your blood traitor boyfriend looks like he's going to commit murder in the middle of the great hall." Rosier whispers; leaning over so that his mouth brushes my ear as he talks. I shudder in discomfort as his cool breath fans across my face and I turn my attention towards the empty plate in front of me.

I reach towards the toast however Rosier smacks my hand away.

"I don't think you need any more food." He cackles, glancing up and down at me. I return my hand to my lap and clench my fists.

Rosier doesn't remove his hand from my leg for the whole of breakfast and I only escape from him to use the toilet. When I leave the girls lavatories he's waiting outside and my body visibly droops at the sight of him. Why won't he just piss off?

"I want you to stay away from Potter and Black." He commands, grabbing my arm and pulling me towards him.

"That's a bit difficult seeing as we're in the same house." I reply, rolling my eyes at his idiocy.

Suddenly his hand lashes out and slaps me across the face. I recoil away from him and he drops my arm so I fall onto the floor.

"Don't use that tone with me." Rosier growls; kicking me once in the side for good measure.

Rosier's footsteps disappear around the corner and I shakily pull myself to my feet before making my way back into the bathroom.

My reflection shocks me; a nasty black bruise is forming across my cheek from where Rosier slapped me and I pull up my shirt to reveal another one forming on my ribs. I try multiple spells to remove the bruise from my face however none of them work and I'm stuck with it.

Eventually I leave the lavatories and realise that I've missed an hour of double potions.

"Shit." I hiss as I hurry towards the dungeons.

"Sorry I'm late Professor." I say breathlessly as I enter the classroom.

"Merlin's beard, Miss McKinnon, what did you do to your face?" Professor Slughorn exclaims, drawing the attention of the students in the room.

"I-" I stop myself when I see Travers and Mulciber daring me to say something from the back of the classroom. "I had an accident Professor; you know how clumsy I can be." I laugh it off and Professor Slughorn seems to accept my lie.

"What the fuck happened?" Sirius growls when I sit down next to him.

"I told you." I hiss back, pulling out my parchment, quill and ink. "What're we doing today?"

"Don't bullshit me McKinnon." Sirius replies, his tone angry. I turn to face him and take in his angry features.

"I can't say anything here." I whisper, dropping my eyes to the desk and motioning to the group of Slytherin's at the back of the classroom.

"Meet me outside the room of requirement after last lesson." Sirius replies, squeezing my hand underneath the table. "Make sure no one follows you."

"Marly!" James calls from somewhere behind me in the corridor. "Marly wait up!" I push on-wards and ignore his calls for me; remembering what Rosier said earlier.

"Why are you ignoring me?" James asks, grabbing my arm and spinning me towards him. I managed to spin a lie about getting too close to the whomping willow this morning when James and Lily confronted me about my bruise.

I doubt either of them believed me and James was saying all sorts of things he was going to do to Rosier under his breath.

"I can't talk to you here James." I reply, pulling away from him and continuing towards the seventh floor.

"Marly-" James protests.

"Leave me alone!" I yell, fastening my footsteps to avoid a run in with Rosier.

I don't know why but I'm nervous about meeting Sirius. Not nervous in a bad way but in a sweaty palms, racing heart, butterflies in my stomach way.

"Took your time." Sirius pushes off the wall next to the tapestry of Barnabas the Barmy trying to teach trolls ballet.

"James held me up." I reply, my cheeks flushing slightly at the way he's staring at me. "What?" I ask when he doesn't stop staring.

Sirius ignores my question and begins to pace up and down three times until a door appears in the wall.

"C'mon." He says, grabbing my hand; sending an electric feeling up my arm.

We enter into a small room with a sofa and fireplace; much like the Gryffindor common room.

"Now, tell me what the hell is going on!" Sirius yells once the doors close behind me. I take a seat on the sofa and watch as Sirius paces in front of me; his fists clenched in frustration.

"I'm betrothed to Rosier." I say quietly, watching Sirius' reaction carefully.

"WHAT!?" He yells, turning towards me.

"Sirius-" I start however he growls in anger and turns towards the wall behind him, swinging his fist and punching it in anger.

"SIRIUS!" I yell, rushing over and grabbing his arm before he can punch it again. "Stop it; you're just going to hurt yourself!"

"I'm going to kill that slimy bastard." He growls, ignoring his hurt fist.

"Sirius-" I start, running a hand through my messy hair. "SIRIUS!" I yell when he ignores me.

Finally he turns his ice grey eyes towards me and raises an eyebrow.

"You can't do anything to him." I say quietly, collapsing onto the sofa in frustration and running a hand down my face.

"Why the hell not?" Sirius replies, sitting down next to me and staring at me in shock. "Are you defending him Mar?"

"Of course I'm not!" I exclaim in shock. "If I don't do what he says then he'll kill my parents." I whisper. "They're the only family I have left, I can't lose them too."

Sirius groans in frustration and wraps an arm around my waist; pulling me towards him.

"He doesn't want me around you or James." I whisper against his neck, inhaling his cigarette smoke and earthy scent.

"Like you could resist me." Sirius scoffs, making a small laugh escape my lips.

"Don't let your head get too big Black; it won't fit back out the door." I quip back, poking his nose.

"Did you just... poke my nose?" Sirius asks in shock, reaching up to run a hand through his already messy hair.

"Maybe." I reply with a wink.

Sirius smirks at me and runs a hand up my side causing me to inhale sharply when his hand touches the large bruise on my ribs.

"Mar?" Sirius asks, noticing my pained expression. "What's wrong?"

"N-Nothing." I stutter, evening my breathing and trying not to wince with every breath.

"Don't lie to me." Sirius replies, "Take off your shirt."

"Black I know you want to see me naked but you don't have to be so forward." I reply sarcastically, not removing my shirt.

"McKinnon, if you don't take it off, I will." Sirius replies coolly, his hands reaching out to undo the first button of my white school shirt.

"I'd like to see you try." I smirk, crossing my arms and raising a thin eyebrow at him.

"Oh you underestimate me McKinnon." Sirius smirks, leaning forwards to place an arm either side of me.

I quickly slide out from between his arms and run to the other side of the coffee table.

"So that's how you want to play?" Sirius smiles coyly and stands up to face me.

I smirk back and giggle as Sirius feigns moving to the left. Suddenly he jumps over the table and pushes me against the wall.

"Did you even try?" He laughs, his cool breath fanning over my face. This reminds me of the position we were in the other night and my cheeks heat up.

"You'll never find out." I reply, winking up at him.

"That was a very poor attempt at flirtation McKinnon. If you want to get in my pants you need to do better than that." Sirius laughs, leaning forwards to rest his forehead on mine.

"What about this?" I reply, reaching up to unbutton my shirt before letting it slip down my arms onto the floor.

Sirius' smile widens even more until he sees the ugly bruise on the left side of my ribs.

"Did Rosier do this to you?" Sirius growls, his hand hovering over the dark patch.

I nod my head slightly and look up at his angry face.

"Did he... did he hit you as well?" Sirius asks, his voice shaking with anger.

"Sirius-" I say, resting a hand on his cheek and turning his face towards mine. "Sirius, look at me."

Slowly the messy haired boy turns his head towards me; his jaw is clenched however his eyes full of worry.

"I'm sorry I didn't say anything before." I whisper, our faces are only a few centimetres apart and I can feel his heartbeat under my hand on his chest.

I lean in and brush my lips against his.

"McKinnon." Sirius groans, pulling me closer to him. I giggle at his needy tone and he bites my lip lightly. "Don't tease me." He pants, nipping at my neck.

"Did you just give me a love bit?" I ask, reaching my hand up to touch my neck.

"It's a pretty good one." Sirius smirks in delight before picking me up and chucking me on the bed that appeared in the room.

"Merlin, this room does give you what you need." I laugh, pulling Sirius towards me.

"Where have you two been?" James confronts Sirius and I as soon as we enter the Gryffindor common room.

I managed to tame my while hair before we left the room of requirement however not much could be done for the handful of love bites that Sirius left all over me.

"Nowhere." I shrug, moving to sit on the sofa next to Lily.

"We ran into each other on our way back here, I don't know where McKinnon was but I was sending a letter to mum." Sirius lies smoothly, pulling the marauders map from his pocket. "Were you looking for this?"

James snatches the map from him and gives the two of us an odd look before returning to his game of wizards chess with Peter.

I lean my head on Lily's shoulder, brushing her frizzy hair from my face.

"You alright Marly?" She whispers, slinging an arm around my shoulders.

I want to tell her what happened tonight and about my engagement to Rosier but I can't. Sirius and I are not dating; he's Sirius Black for Merlin's sake, he doesn't date girls and I don't want a relationship right now.

"Yeah." I reply to Lily, watching James' queen smash Peter's king off of the board.

Sirius and I decided that we need to tell Dumbledore about my situation before it gets any worse, I don't want my parents or friends to be in any danger but there's no way in hell that I'm marrying Evan Rosier.

"Have you heard about the Order of the Phoenix?" Lily asks when it's just our small group left in the common room. James seems to understand what she's talking about and he pipes up to listen to her.

"No." Sirius replies, raising an eyebrow at the red haired girl.

"It's basically a society that Dumbledore set up at the start of the war to help defeat the dark lord and his followers. All the members must be of age so we can all join, I don't want to pressure anyone but... after what's happened, after losing Cas-" Lily's voice catches on the young boys name and tears threaten to spill down my face. "We don't have much to lose."

"After all," James continues. "If we don't fight then our world is going to be destroyed."

"I'm in." Sirius says immediately, looking around at the rest of the group.

"Me too." I reply, Sirius shoots me a worried look but I ignore him and smile tightly at James.

"Same." Alice says, putting down her book.

"Sign me up." Remus yawns, rubbing his eyes.

It's only Peter who hasn't spoken and he doesn't say anything for a few more minutes.

"Is it really getting that bad?" Peter asks in a small voice, staring out of the window at the raging storm outside.

"Yes Wormy, it is." Sirius replies, slapping his friend lightly on the back and smiling sadly at him.

"You don't have to join if you don't want to." Remus says, looking at his watery eyed friend in worry. "We won't judge you; it's a big commitment."

"No, I want to fight." Peter replies, his face set in determination.

"Ok then, we'll go see Professor Dumbledore tomorrow." Lily announces, clapping her hands together and standing up to go to bed.

"C'mon Marly, Alice, let's go to bed." Lily yawns, pulling me up by the arm. "What's that on your neck Marly?"

"Nothing." I reply, clamping a hand over the love bit Sirius left there. Out of the corner of my eye I can see Sirius trying to supress his laughter however he isn't very successful and James is giving him a weird look.

Alice gasps and drags me up the dormitory staircase. As soon as the three of us are safely behind the thick wooden door Alice drops my arm and pushes me onto my bed.

"Wha-" I start but Alice cuts me off.

"Are you and Sirius dating or just shagging?" Alice asks, crossing her arms in front of her and raising an eyebrow at me in suspicion.

"It happened once!" I exclaim, looking between the two girls standing in front of me.

"Marly!" Lily exclaims, staring at me in shock. "You know what Sirius is like!"

"I thought you two were friends?" I ask questioningly.

"We are Mar, but that just means I know what he's like even more. I know that he thinks girls only want sex from him too-" Lily smiles sympathetically.

"I know what I'm doing." I snap, my blue eyes hardening in anger. "I know that Black isn't romantic and I don't want a relationship either."

"Marly-" Lily protests but I disappear into the bathroom and don't come out until the two girls have fallen asleep.

"Professor Dumbledore you have to do something!" Sirius shouts, standing up from his chair and resting his hands on the desk.

"The only thing that I can do is send Miss McKinnon's parents into hiding. I cannot, however, stop this wedding from going forward." Professor Dumbledore replies calmly, looking between Sirius and I with a knowing look.

We all went to see Professor Dumbledore a couple of weeks ago about joining the Order of the Phoenix and he gladly accepted out offers, however we will not be able to do any missions until we've left Hogwarts.

This is the first chance Sirius and I have had to speak to Dumbledore alone about my current situation with Rosier but Sirius is just getting angrier and angrier.

The other day Sirius found another bruise on my stomach when we were in the room of requirement.

"I can contact your parents and talk to them about going into hiding using the Fidelius Charm." Professor Dumbledore suggests, sitting down in his large chair and popping a sherbet lemon into his mouth.

He offers the bowl towards the two of us however we both decline hastily.

"Mr Black," Professor Dumbledore begins. "I know that it must be difficult for you two continue a relationship when Miss McKinnon is betrothed to another-"

"Professor we aren't dating." Sirius scoffs, laughing off the idea. Well I can't say that didn't hurt.

Professor Dumbledore looks to me for confirmation and I shake my head slightly, avoiding eye contact with either of the men.

"I will do all I can and I'll contact you after I've contacted your parents Miss McKinnon. Now, please return to your common room." Professor Dumbledore commands, standing up and showing us out of his office.

"That was a waste of time." Sirius grumbles as we make our way back to the Gryffindor common room. "I'm sorry Mar."

"Don't be." I reply, reaching down to grab his hand. I feel his questioning gaze on my face however I look straight forwards at the dark corridor we're walking down.

"Mar-" Sirius starts however I cut him off.

"I'm going to show you something." I say, dragging the dark haired boy through the corridors until we reach the astronomy tower.

"How cliché." Sirius smirks, "Are we going to shag?"

"If you're lucky." I reply, making my way up the stairs and stopping when we reach the platform under the stars.

Sirius continues to make jokes until I shut him up by pressing my lips against his. I know he doesn't feel the same way about me and that he sees this as just sex but every time I tell myself I'm going to stop this thing between us, he looks at me with those ice grey eyes and I just melt.

"I brought you up here because I wanted to show you something." I start, lying back on the hard floor; pulling Sirius down with me.

"What?" Sirius whispers, threading his fingers through my own.

"Do you see that star there?" I ask, pointing to the brightest star in the night sky. Sirius nods his head and I continue. "That star is called Sirius and it's the brightest star in our sky."

"Really?" Sirius asks. "I'm named after a star."

"Shut up." I laugh lightly, smacking his shoulder. "I wanted to show you that because I know you think you aren't good enough most of the time and that you don't deserve the friends you have but you are like that star Sirius. You hold us together, you… you hold me together. I don't know what I would do without you."

"Mar-" Sirius whispers, his eyes hold a confused expression as he leans forwards and presses his lips against mine.

A/N: Another chapter! This one was written fairly quickly so sorry if there are any mistakes. Cute lil blackinnon moments. Please review what you think and what you think I could improve :)
