Chapter 6: The Rite to Be King Part One
[Kaiser's P.O.V]
"Hey, wake up." I felt a nudge at my side. "You do realize you're not dead yet." I snap my eyes open and wince at the flood light. As my vision returns I come face to face with a gold haired teen dressed in a black trench coat. He reaches down and pulls me to my feet and gives me a second to dust myself off. "How am I alive?" I ask him. He smiles and points past me. I turn around and see a tall red-haired teen clad in blue and gold armour fighting with Valko against the huge lizard. "My friend Mavrick, the red-haired boy, formed a barrier around you," the gold haired replies. I noticed him rolling a king chess piece in his hand and I ask, "You could have left for the cliff. Why come back to save us?" He shrugs and puts away the chess piece, "I can't have my future classmates dying on me before I get to know them right?" He unsheathes his two gunblades and after a loud roar Valko crashes into the ground beside us. "My name is Alexi," He says after he fires a shot, from his red gunblade, at the monster.
"Kaiser, and my friend here is Valko," I respond. I take a look around and realize that there were only four of us.
"Um…"
"If you're wondering about the eight people you rescued they're safe," He responds while shooting a few more bullets. "I told them to leave because they weren't in the right state to fight." He turns and notices my worried face and laughs. "Relax, they'll be fine. Besides, shouldn't the bigger concern be about the large monster ahead of us. I nod in response and grab my chakarams off the ground while Valko picks himself off while scowling. "Be wary about this monster you two, a Lazardus is strong and highly intelligent. Fight with extreme caution especially if you're injured." Alexi says while looking at me, if you're not up to it you can leave. Better safe and scared then dead."
I wince at the deep cut in my shoulder but I nod, "I can fight just give me some time." Alexi nods and he rushes while Valko sighs and follows. I sit and focus my aura to my shoulder. I stare as the trio fights maneuvers around the monster constantly dodging a swing while another member takes a strike. Aleixi's voice echoes across the battlefield as he shouts out orders. Mavrick fights with wild strikes and takes blow after blow from the monster while Valko rapidly hits it on its back but, their attacks leave little to no damage on the monster due to its scales. Alexi yells something and fires off two shots, the bullets hit the monster and trigger a small explosion immediately followed by a flash of light. Mavrick immediately charges forward and thrusts his trident. The scales break under the combined force of the attacks and the monster wails. I clutch my ears, along with Kaiser and Valko who falls from monster, and Alexi raises his black gunblade. The barrel shines brightly and a flash of light enters the mouth of the monster. The beast collapses on the ground with a thud and blood trickles from its mouth. I stare in shock as the three of them walk back to me.
"You okay there?" Alexi asks and I nod wordlessly. My shoulder had healed completely but it was extremely sore.
"If you focused on your own safety you would have been able to help just now." Valko scowls at me and grabs my arm. With a grunt he pulls me to my feet. "I knew that there was monster behind me and I was going to guard against it." I open my mouth to speak but I'm cut off by a quick jab from Valko. "But, what I did not know was that you were going to charge past me like an idiot. Do you think you're some kind of super hero? Had it not been for Alexi and Mavrick we both would be dead." I nod and Valko scoffs. I look over his shoulder and see Alexi smiling understandably to me. "Kaiser…" Valko says. He whips his hand up in a slapping motion, stopping only centimeters from my face, a wall of rock bursts up behind me and explodes. We shield ourselves from the debris as the heat sears our skin. My eyes widen as I see what caused the explosion, lumbering out of the forest are five massive Lazardi.
"This has to be some kind of sick joke." I mutter, behind me Alexi clicks his tongue in annoyance. "Get ready for the fight of your lives," Alexi says as he points his black gunblade at the Lazardus in the center. Its body is coated with thick boney plates, protrusions from its limbs resembles blades and, smoke was emitting from its mouth. The monster gives us a toothy snarl that sends a shiver down my spine. "That monstrosity in the center is the queen, no matter what do not challenge it on your own," says Alexi as his gunblades begin to flare up.
"Then what exactly are we supposed to do?" I respond as a take a step back. Sweat runs down my chakarams as the five monsters advance slowly. He remains silent. Alexi closes his eyes and takes a deep breath. "Atalia will protect me," he whispers and the black gunblade flashes. Four gun shots crack through the air, I watch in shock as the shimmering bullets trail through the air and shatter uselessly on the foreheads of the lizards. Four of the Lazardus roar in anger and charge us while the queen lurks at the back. "Mavrick! Valko! Draw them away!" Valko and Mavrick rush forward to intercept the four but two Lazardus leap over them while the other two swat them into different directions of the clearing. "Well that didn't work very well," Alexi says while turning. He throws me into a fireman carry and runs as fast as he can. "Wait, why isn't the queen chasing after us!?" I yell in shock. "She probably doesn't see us as a threat!" Alexi yells back. Once we're a good distance from the queen Alexi throws me away from the monsters and leaps into the air. A quick shot propels him into the air and another shot rockets him back into the monsters. His black gunblade skids along the scales creates a shower of sparks. Alexi dives quickly into a roll and avoids a swipe by a lizardus. Once Alexi gets to his feet he sends out a volley of gunfire at the second Lazardus. As it reels Alexi quickly propels himself back to me with an explosion. "Are you just going to sit there all day?" I snap out of my trance and grip my chakarams.
"What do you want me to do?" I reply. My entire body was shaking in fear.
Alexi puts a hand on my shoulder and calms me down. "Stay on the sidelines and if you see an opportunity take it. I'll keep their focus on me. Now GO!" He shoves me to the side and launches himself into the air. The two lazardus charge at us and Alexi opens fire on them. Alexi was fast and agile, only dodging attacks by a narrow margin so they would keep trying. Following his advice I throw my chakarams but the bounce of harmlessly. Alexi's yell echoes across the field as a lazardus tail swipes his back. My mind races as I think look for any possible openings. Eventually I stare eye to eye with one and it snarls, revealing its hideous maw. "That's it," I mutter. I muster my strength and feed some aura into my chakaram. I hurl the weapon and in a blink of an eye it cut into the beast's eye. The monster screams in pain and instantly Alexi leaps in front of it and fires into its mouth. With a flash of light the beast is silent and falls to the ground with a thud. I cheer but immediately but before sound can come out of my mouth the second lazardus's body appears right before me. Its clawed fist slams into me and I'm sent crashing into the forest.
"Kaiser!" I hear Alexi yell but I don't respond. The ground shakes slightly from the monster's footsteps. "Hold on Kaiser!" I tilt my head to see the monster looming down on me. I hear Alexi yell and an explosion follows. He lands beside me and throws his black gunblade into the air and leaps into the air and slams his feet into the jaw of the lazardus. In the air, as his black gunblade spins, light congregates around it and with a flash it fires and powerful beam. The monster jerks its head to the side and the beam shoots right down the right cheek of the monster, burning a deep hole through the monster. The muscle round the hole begins to bulge and explode leaving behind corrosive puss. The monster wails in pain and claps its two palms on Alexi, who immediately sheaths his red gunblade and holds the two hands apart. Slowly the monster brings Alexi to its maw. It opens its jaws and light begins to gather at the back of its throat. I desperately crawl to my nearby chakaram and I'm too late. Alexi becomes engulfed in a massive fireball and from the ball of smoke his body falls down to my side. Tears roll down my eyes as I see his charred form.
"I'm…so sorry."
He laughs a little and places a hand over mind, "I am too." The lazardus raises a claw. "Well, better luck next time I guess," Alexi says. I grip his hand and focus. "It's not yet," I cringe at a flash of pain, "I trust you." I close my eyes and focus on the connection we share. The warmth of his hand flows through me and within it I sense his aura. The black world around me crumbles and I crash through the ground. "What the hell," I mutter. I found myself floating in white space. In front of me was a massive glowing sphere of gold light.
"So this is what Alexi's soul is like," I whisper it swelled and contracted while sending off pulses of raw energy. I drifted closer to it. The heat of the star like object began the sear my skin but I pressed on until I was able to touch it. Energy flooded my body and I screamed in agony. The pain was nearly unbearable but I held and slowly I began the pour my aura into the sphere which began to expand. Alexi's emotions poured into my mind, mountains of stress, pain, worry, and fear pushed me to the brink of insanity and a twinge of regret reeled me back in. I snap my eyes open just to see a claw centimeters from my face. An explosion rocks my ear drums and something collides into my body, knocking me a several meters away from the monster.
"Couldn't you think of a less painful way to save me?" I ask while clutching my shoulder. I look and see the charred face of Alexi who smiles in my direction.
"Come on now, surely a bit of a bruising can't kill you." He looks at the monster and then to his black gunblade. "I'm not sure what you did but thank you. I'm 100% sure that you just saved both of our lives, allow me to pay you back." The monster snarls at us at begins to charge and Alexi sighs, "I was hoping to save this for the queen but looks like I have enough aura for a few more. Heal up and be careful, this will be over in a second." He dashes forward and fires with his red gunblade. The bullet explodes, sending the monster reeling. Within a second Alexi picks up his black gunblade and leaps into the air. Light begins to congregate around the weapon and with a single shot the flesh of the lazardus disappears, leaving behind a large hole that runs straight through the beast. He catches my awed face and chuckles, "don't celebrate yet. Under most circumstances I can only use that attack twice but, it seems that you gave me more aura. Thanks to you I can manage one more laser." He turns his attention of the queen. She snarls and rises on all fours, slowly the two circle each other. Alexi's gunblades shimmer violently with raw energy and the Queen's body begins to radiate with power. I gulp and take a few steps back. With a quick flick of his wrist he levels the black gunblade and fires. The beam of concentrated light laces across the field, disintegrating the nearby grass, and piercing a plasma ball fired by the queen. The explosion unleashed a shockwave that sent me flying off my feet. Once I got back to my feet I stared in utter disbelief, standing in the massive crater was the lazardus. Its armour is cracked and blood trickled from the openings yet the queen still stood tall. "How in the name of Remnant is that thing still standing?" I look to Alexi and he stares utterly shell-shocked. I could feel the terror that enveloped his mind. The monster charges and Alexi makes no motion to counter.
"Alexi!" I yell, but he's unresponsive. "Alexi…Alexi…ALEXI!" A wave of emotions surge through my body; courage, fury, determination, excitement. I focus my aura on him while praying that the spiritual connection was able to deliver my message; that we needed him if we ever wanted to get out of this, that there was still a chance to kill this monster, that his attack must have weakened the queen considerably. I ignored his fear and sense of failure and screamed at the top of my lungs, "GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASS ALEXI AND KEEP FIGHTING!" He blinked stopped for a second and smiled. With his two gunblades he unleashed a hail of bullets on the monster while keeping just out of reach. We meet eye to eye and he nods before turning back to the fight. I grip my chakarams and smile, maybe I could help after all. Aura poured into my weapons as I winded up for a shot. "HIYHA!" I yell as I hurl the weapon at the monster. Lighting crackles through the air and the blades surges forward, letting out a thunder-clap, before tearing through the armour and embedding itself into the queen's spine.
