Chapter 10

POV Serena

At the hospital, I started to tear up. The doctor started to walk out the operation room through the sliding door; so I got up and asked, "Is Ash going to be okay?". The doctor reassured me and said, "he's just resting and sleeping. His cast should be about 1-2 months and his foot will be perfectly healed." I sighed in relief.

"Ash...please be okay.." I closed my eyes and clasped my hands over my heart.

Clemont sat down besides me. "It looks like you really care for that boy.." He said with a slight tone of disappointment.

I looked up, with glossy eyes- on the verge of tearing up. "I really really do like Ash. But- I'm not sure if I 'love' him yet. But I really do care for him. He's sweet, charming, caring, enthusiastic. He's always there to cheer me on and he's always willing to protect me. I- I wish I wasn't so much of a burden to him." I started to cry as I grasped my skirt, tears started to trickle down my face. Clemont put his hand on my hand and said, "I shouldn't be the one to hear this."

I looked up at Clemont. "Wh-what?" I sniffled.

Clemont motioned his head to go inside to visit Ash.

I slowly got up and nodded to Clemont. "Thank you Clemont. You're a great friend."

I turned my back to Clemont and put my hand on the door to enter Ash's room.

Clemont said to himself, "And a friend I will always be…"

He got up and left the hospital.

"Ash?" I said quietly. Ash was sleeping on his bed as I entered the room.

I looked at Ash. His face was perfectly formed and had a relaxed and peaceful facial structure. I looked down to his injury area where his left leg was sealed off with a brand new, white cast. Then, tears came to my eyes as I started to sob. I cried to myself and said, "I'm im sorry Ash. I never should have gotten involved with you. I'm such a burden. I don't know anything about being a human and I never should have came to this world."

Then, a hand started to stroke my hair. I stopped crying and looked up at Ash.

"Serena, why are you crying so much? Were you hurt in any way?" Ash said tiredly. He sat up and groaned in pain due to his leg.

I wiped my tears and said, "I'm such a burden to you. I have no job, I barely can afford a place to live, I'm probably illegal in this world since you know..I'm not human. I don't know how to do anything but eat." I started to babble more as Ash put his finger to shush my lips. "And I like every part of you- all your flaws and imperfections, Serena. You just have to believe that you can accomplish these things." Ash said with slight enthusiasm.

I gave him a weak smile. "Ash…. I need to tell you something."

"What is it, Serena?" Ash said.

I put my hand on his hand and said, "Ash...I like you. I really do. Even though I'm not the most perfect girl- or even human being in the world… and I'm not even sure if I will be able to become a human but...will you date me?"

Ash laughed slightly. I gave him a confused look. "Did you just laugh at me?"

He said, "yes."

"Did I just get rejected?" I asked.

Ash said once again, "yes." I started to get up and turn around to walk away.

"Serena."

I turned to him. "yes?"

"I can be reckless and rambunctious. I always live on the edge. I have a poor family background yet a wonderful relationship with my mom. I'm a skilled photographer with a salary of $60,000. Will you date me?" Ash asked.

Confused at first, but soon I understood. He wanted to be the one to ask me out. I nodded and said, "yes."

He took my hand and held it as I smiled like a complete dork.

1 week later….

Ash was released from the hospital. We spent our times going to amusement park dates, photoshoots, hanging out by the beach, and rowing by the pier.

I was sitting in a boat while Ash was rowing. I looked at the water and smiled.

"I miss being in the water…" I said.

Ash said, "So...you can breathe underwater right?" I shook my head. "I'm half human, half mermaid. If I touch the water, I can swim but I can't hold my breath as long as I used to. I can still hold it longer than an average human though." I said.

I looked up in the dark sky as it started to light up with fireflies.

I smiled to myself and stared in complete awe at its beauty.

Ash took a hibiscus flower and placed it in my ear to hold back my long golden hair.

We cuddled in the rowboat and watched the stars.

"Even though we're from different worlds… if we look at the moon and stars, they still look the same no matter what. Interesting right?" I said to Ash.

He pulled me in closer. "You make it sound like you're leaving.."

I held his waist and snuggled in his chest. "I'm not going anywhere…" I said as I fell asleep…

As the days went by, we ate, drank, laughed, smiled, quarrelled and made up. We spent time like that. Even though I had that fear of disappearing and turning into foam, Ash was always there to comfort me.

Countdown: Day 0 T-minus 3 hours

I walked into May's room. May was deciding what to wear the next day.

"May.." I said.

She turned to face me and she placed down her clothes. "What's wrong Serena?"

"Today's the last day." I said- holding back my tears.

May joked around. "What last day? Are you going somewhere?"

"You know...it's already been 100 days.." I said with disbelief.

"What are you talking about… you said Ash is your true love. You can't say this! If you don't turn into foam, it'll be awkward." May joked- tears brimming her eyes.

"Even so...you'll never know…" I said.

I hugged May. "I'm thankful for everything. Thank you May. For being my first friend in this world."

May sniffled but then her voice started to crack as tears came down her eyes.

"This is totally too corny for me… Just try- try disappearing like that. I'm gonna find Ash and whoop his butt..." I gave a slight laugh as tears came to my eyes too. My lip started to quiver as I hugged her tightly. We stood there crying and hugging.

"I'll miss you May."

2 hours later…

I sat with Ash at the beach as we watched the waves roll towards us, and leave.

Ash said, "This is where we first met right? Near the docks? Do you remember?" He stared at the waves.

I nodded. "Yeah…" I snuggled closer to him.

Ash took a small ring out of his pocket and slid it into my finger.

"Woah.." I said, smiling in awe. "It's so pretty." I said.

It had small diamonds surrounding a pearl in the center.

Ash said, "Our love…. must be real right?"

I looked at him and nodded, smiling. "Of course." Joking around, I said, "Do you have feelings for Dawn? It said that it has to be 100% positively true love."

Ash defended himself. "I'm 100% positive. If you disappear, then you'll probably have feelings for that Clemont guy! If you turn into bubbles, it'll be your fault." He joked back.

"you…" I said slyly.

"I'm joking." Ash said as he grabbed my hand and intertwined them with his.

"I'm never letting go of this hand." He said to me. "Never."

I looked at him as he slowly leaned toward me.

His lips slowly touched mine as I closed my eyes.

It was a sweet and soft, warm longing kiss.

A tear came down as I saw myself disappear from Ash. Ash's eyes were still closed and he was still frozen in place- denying that I'm leaving. A bright light started to shine as I saw Ash sitting there alone.

"Goodbye, Ash.." I said.

6 months later….

Ash was taking photos of a model when a co-worker entered the room.

"Mr. Ketchum, I have hired you a new model. She's kind of shy, so please make her feel welcomed."

Ash nodded- focused in his work and still taking photos of the current model.

"Tell her to get dressed and she can jump right into these photos. Bring her in."

Ash heard the door open and close. He heard the footsteps approaching louder- yet he still wasn't phased and he still didn't look up.

The current model stepped out of the backdrop to go change into something different.

Ash had his eye in his camera as the girl stepped into the view of the camera.

Ash froze and saw the girl in the viewfinder. He snapped a photo and looked up.

Serena's long golden hair was cut short- shoulder length. She was wearing a pink hat with matching pink and red clothes with brown boots. Her necklace had the pearl ring in the center. Serena smiled as she reached out her hand to him.

"Hi Ash…. I'm Serena, your new model. Nice to meet you."
