Chapter 10
After John and Jessica wrapped up their romantic make-out session, they walked downstairs.
"What do you say we make a trip to my locker, baby doll?" John asked.
"Love to. We better ask the others if they want to tag along." Jessica replied.
The criminal and the hippie walked up front.
"Anybody want to come with us?" John asked.
"Where we're going?" Brian asked.
"You'll find out sooner or later, dude." Jessica said.
"Are you in or out?" John asked for the second time.
Claire stood up and followed Jessica and John to the door. Andrew, Brian, and Allison soon followed.
John poked his head out of the door to see if Vernon left. Once it was safe, the six teens leave the library.
Jessica caught up with John. Smiling, he puts his arm around her shoulder.
Claire joins the two on the other side of John.
"How do you know where Vernon went?" Claire asked.
"I don't." John responded, not paying attention to her.
"Well, then how do you know when he'll be back?" Claire pressed.
"I don't." He said again, smirking.
"Being bad feels pretty good, don't it princess?" Jessica asked with a devious grin.
Claire just sneered at the bohemian girl.
"What's the point of going to Bender's locker?" Brian asks Andrew.
"Beats me," Andrew said, shrugging.
"This is so stupid. Why are we risking getting caught?"
"I don't know." Andrew is starting to get irritated.
"So then what are we doing?" Brian asked for the third time.
"You ask me one more question and I'm beating the crap out of you." Andrew snapped.
"Sorry," Brian said meekly and kept his mouth shut.
The teens finally made it to John's locker.
John opens the door and a guillotine fell and sliced the tip of a ratty Converse sneaker.
"Awesome dude," Jessica said.
"Thanks baby," John replied, opening the top portion of his locker.
"You're such a slob." Andrew scoffed.
"My maid's on vacation." John said sharply.
He pulls out a paper bag covered with grease.
Jessica watched as John pulled out two more bags and weed.
"It's drugs!" Brian exclaimed, wide-eyed.
"Screw that, Bender. Put it back." Andrew ordered.
The criminal ignores the athlete. He takes Jessica's hand and they walk away.
"Drugs, the boy has marijuana." Brian remarked.
Claire ignores him and follows Jessica and John.
"That was marijuana." Brian said.
"Shut up dick." Andrew muttered, walking away.
Allison was the last one standing.
"Do you approve of this?" Brian asked.
No response.
Brian walks away, shaking his head.
Allison takes the combination lock off John's locker and slips it into her purse. She joins the others.
"We'll cross through the lab and then we'll double back." John explained.
"You better be right. If Vernon cuts us off, it's your fault airhead." Andrew snapped.
"Relax, dude. He knows what he's doing." Jessica retorted.
"What did he say?" Brian asked with worry. "Where are we going?"
Claire ignores him and walks ahead. Allison walks behind them.
"Uh-oh," Jessica whispered as she, John, Claire and Brian stopped when they saw Vernon walking down the hallway, and luckily he didn't see them.
John grabs Jessica's hand as the teens (minus Allison, who was leaning against the lockers) ran down the hallway and back.
The detainees continued running up until they see Vernon at the water fountain his back turned. They run again, going downstairs.
"Wait, wait. Hold it." John suddenly said, letting go of Jessica's hand.
The others stop.
"We have to go through the cafeteria."
"No through the activities hall," Andrew insisted.
"Hey, you don't know what you're talking about." John retorted.
"Come on, you guys. Peace and love, now is not the time to argue." Jessica persisted. But the two boys ignore the blonde much to her frustration.
"You don't know…"
Allison squeaked loudly.
"We're through listening to you. We're going this way." Andrew snapped, glaring at John. "You go where you want mother hen."
Andrew, Claire, and Brian started to run.
"Come on!" The athlete called.
Jessica, Allison, and John followed them reluctantly.
The teens run down the stairs once again leading them to a fence.
"Crap!" Andrew gasped.
"Congratulations dude, you're officially an idiot." Jessica snapped.
"Flip you!" Andrew snarled.
"Flip you! Why didn't you listen to John?" Claire yelled at the jock.
"We're dead." Brian said with dismay.
"No, just me," John muttered, glancing at Jessica.
"What are you talking about?" Jessica asked, shocked.
John pulls the weed out his pocket, turning to Brian.
"Get back to the library. Keep your unit out of it." He commanded, stuffing the drugs into the nerd's pants.
"No, Johnny! It's too risky! You'll get caught." Jessica protested.
"Baby, it's the only way." John insisted, holding Jessica's face in his hands looking deep in her eyes. "Just do me a favor, escort these dummies back."
"Okay," Jessica replied, looking sad and scared at the same time. "Just get back to the library, will you?"
"Will do, Miss Free Spirit," John replied. "And don't be scared, everything will be alright."
"What makes you think that?" Jessica asked.
"Does this answer your question?" John and Jessica embrace in another tender and romantic kiss, noses pressed and lips locking. They put their arms around each other while Jessica felt a warm sensation all over her body.
John suddenly let go and took off running screaming, "I want to be an airborne ranger!" He turned around and smiled at the hippie.
Jessica stands with a far away and dreamy expression for a little minute until reality came back to her.
"What are you waiting for dudes? Let's hit the trail." The dirty blonde-haired girl declared.
One by one, the others followed Jessica back to the library.
"Before the day I die," John hollered, running down the hallway, making a racket; "There's five things I want to ride!"
"If only Jessica were with me, she'd love this." He thought.
"Bicycle, tricycle, automobile," John continued singing and running down the halls, to the gym, "Virgin's mother and a Ferris wheel!"
The criminal jumped up in the air, ripping posters and flyers off the walls singing "I want to be an airborne ranger!"
Once he made it inside the gym, John sees a white sneaker and kicked off one of his boots. He grabs a basketball and started to dribble.
"Three. Two, one!" John yelled, holding the basketball over his head before dribbling it to the net.
He jumped and dunked the ball, cheering and yelling.
Suddenly, Vernon stormed in.
"Bender, Bender! What is this?" The principal yelled, "What are doing here? What is this?"
John grinned, still dribbling the ball "Hi."
"Out, that's it Bender!" Vernon snapped, pointing his finger at the gym doors. "Out, it's over."
John crosses the ball before spinning it with his finger. "Don't you want to hear my excuse?"
"Out!" Vernon ordered.
"I'm thinking of trying out for a scholarship." John replied.
"Give me the ball, Bender." Vernon said calmly, holding out his hand. "Give me that ball."
Bender threw the ball (faking it) at Vernon who flinched. He does it again and Vernon flinched. John rolls the ball to him and jumped out of the sneaker as Vernon kicked the ball towards him.
John grabs his jacket and boot, walking out of the gym with Vernon trailing behind him.
Jessica and the others made it to the library safely. They sat in their seats waiting for John.
As if on cue, John and Vernon entered the library. John smiled at Jessica as Vernon shoved him.
"Get your stuff, let's go." Vernon commanded, shoving John.
"Mr. Wise Guy's taken upon himself to go to the gymnasium. I'm sorry to inform you, you're going to be without his services for the rest of the day." The principal announced.
"B-O-O H-O-O," John said flatly.
"Everything's a big joke huh, Bender?" Vernon asked. "The false alarm you pulled on Friday, false alarms are really funny. What if your home- what if your family- what if your dope was on fire?"
"Impossible, sir. It's in Johnson's underwear." John replied.
Brian grew wide-eyed. Andrew and Jessica laughed.
"You think he's funny? You think this is cute? Is that it?" Vernon demanded, glaring at the jock and the hippie.
Andrew's smile disappeared. Jessica just shrugged.
"Let me tell you something. Look at him, he's a bum." Vernon said, gesturing to John.
"You want to see something funny? You go visit John Bender in five years. You'll see how funny he is." Vernon continued.
He walks over to John's desk and leaned in front of him.
"What's the matter John? You're going to cry?" Vernon asked in a taunting voice.
"Let's go, He ordered, touching Bender's arm.
"Hey keep your stinking hands off me!" John snapped. "I expect better manners from you Dick."
He grabs his coat and jacket. John stops at Andrew's desk and put his sunglasses on the table.
"For better hallway vision," said John.
On their way out, John knocked over some objects off the counter. Vernon and John leave the room.
The remaining teens stayed silent. Jessica sighed and crossed her arms. Allison looked upset. Brian just lowered his head. Andrew was playing with John's sunglasses and Claire just stared at the door.
Meanwhile, Vernon closed the door of the supply closet behind him.
"That's the last time, Bender." Vernon said, looking down and pointing a finger at the criminal.
John just looked at the wall.
"That's the last time you ever make me look bad in front of those kids. You hear me?" Vernon continued, "I make thirty-one thousand dollars a year and I've got a home. And I'm not about to throw it away on some punk like you."
John continued to look at the wall not looking at Vernon.
"But someday, man, someday when you're out of here and you've forgotten all about this place and they've forgotten all about you and you're wrapped up in your own pathetic life," Vernon nodded and pointed at John, "I'm going to be there."
John slowly turned his head around.
"That's right. And I'm going to kick the living crap out of you." Vernon continued, "I'm going to knock you in the dirt."
"You threaten me?" John asked.
"What are you going to do about it?" Vernon sneered.
John looked away.
"You think anybody's going to believe you?" Vernon asked, "You think anybody is going to take your word over mine?"
"I'm a man of respect around here. They love me around here." The principal said.
John imagined Jessica scoffing in disbelief at Vernon's ludicrous statement.
"I'm a swell guy. You're a lying sack of puss and everybody knows it." Vernon sneered.
John didn't look at Vernon for a moment.
"Oh you're a real tough guy." Vernon takes off his suit jacket off, preparing for a fist fight. "Hey, hey. Come on."
John stared at him in bewilderment.
"Get on your feet, pal!" Vernon ordered. "Let's find out how tough you are. I want to know right now, how tough you are. Come on."
John looked at Vernon like he lost his mind.
"I'll give you the first punch." Vernon insisted, "Let's go. Come on. Right here," He leans forward and pointed to his chin. "Just take the first shot, please. I'm begging you, take a shot. Right here,"
John scoots away from the principal.
Vernon closed his eyes, "Just take one shot, that's all I need. Just one swing,"
Nothing happened.
Vernon opens his eyes and sneered at the rebel.
He straightens up and threw a fake punch causing John to flinch a bit.
"That's what I thought. You're a gutless curd." Vernon sneered.
John kept quiet.
Vernon grabbed his suit jacket and left the closet, locking behind him.
John stared down at his knee.
