Time to get grinding on this new chapter of A Year In A Day. It would appear that most of you are indifferent as to whether this story becomes shortened or stays the same, with a majority of non-neutral people wanting it to remain long. So be it, but that means that I am going to need to have the help of my readers more than before. I started this story on a whim, and didn't have a very well thought out storyline for it other than, they become trapped, hang out with different activities till they fall in love. So, in order to keep the story up and running smoothly (what is this? Remvis updating quickly?), I need the collective help from everyone who can spare a minute or two of their lives to write a quick review on what they would like to see. I mean, it takes me thirty minutes to an hour just to punch out 1000 words, and my chapters almost always have around 4000 words, surely a minute or two of your time will make my job easier by making sure that I don't have writers block for months on end. Regardless, here is chapter 10 ~Remvis
Chapter 10, Sally Jackson, the Hot Commodity
Day 74
Over and Over, Their Day Shall Go.
Over and Over, They Make it So.
Together they Must, Their Lives Remold.
Together at Last, As Was Foretold.
On the Day of Love, Conjoin their Hearts Two.
Until they Are One, Their day Shall Ensue.
Percy's POV (6:00 A.M.)
I looked to the base of my bed when I awoke. Was the post notched? Nope. Another day I was stuck. I had realized a while ago that if I used a knife to carve a notch into the bed every day, then I could easily tell the next morning whether or not the day had repeated. I got up and stretched, notched the wood, and then set out to go about my daily business.
When I exited my cabin though, something different permeated the atmosphere. The whole camp atmosphere was slightly downcast, instead of the normal cheery and exuberance that normally came with Valentine's Day. As I jogged through the area, I found out what the change was, and if I'm honest I was a little shocked to say the least.
Outside of Artemis' cabin was the camping gear that the Huntresses used while they were out on a hunt. As I stood there in wonder at a seeming miracle, I knew something had to have changed, given that the Hunt had remained where it was since the night prior.
I shrugged, I would find out later when Artemis awoke what had happened. I went through my morning routine, and headed over to the dining hall once I was done, hoping to get some answers.
Thalia's POV
I woke up and brushed my teeth and all that fun stuff before thinking that something was odd. We had pranked all of the Gods last night, and it was really funny at the time, yet I was now worried that they would find out that is was us who made the pranks happen. I woke up the rest of the girls, and we slowly began to get ready for the day ahead of us.
We hadn't even spent the day like we wanted to, which had been pranking the campers. And yet, it seemed a little weird that Artemis and Percy just happened to have the perfect pranks set up and planned for each god and goddess that had gotten pranked. On the other hand, I felt an odd sense of accomplishment, as if I had already done everything at camp that I set out to in the first place. I no longer felt like I needed to prank the demigods at camp, even though we had only been here for a day without doing anything. Whatever, I'm sure that the rest of the huntresses will still want to get some pranks in.
Suddenly, I heard Artemis yell out "AM I FREE? WHAT'S GOING ON?" before she came rushing out of her personal room. What was going on here? She rushed over to me, her hair wild, placed her hands on my shoulders and shook me before saying, "Thalia what day is it today?" I looked at her like she was crazy for a moment before answering slowly.
"Um, I'm pretty sure that today is the day after Valentine's Day, Milady." Her eyes widened before letting out a whoop for joy. What the hell was going on? "I'm free. Finally free." she let go of me before running outside, where she yelled to the world, "I'M FREE!" this caused a little bit of a commotion, as you might have guessed.
What the Hades was wrong with Artemis? After I finished getting ready, I couldn't help but notice that Artemis had run off ahead to the dining hall. Who could be at the dining hall at this point in time? Percy? Also, it seemed weird to me all of a sudden that Artemis and Percy were such good friends. Like, I knew that they were, and I liked the fact that Lady Artemis enjoyed the company of one of the only good males left out there. But it was as if they were a little closer than friends… maybe… could it be… best friends. Yes, that was what it had to be. Strange that Artemis and Percy would be best friends on seemingly such short notice without me realizing sooner.
I made my way to the dining hall, jumping slightly when I heard Artemis let out a long, drawn out and resounding "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" from inside the dining hall. I walked inside, and I noticed that Artemis was flopped on the table, letting out small tears, while Percy patted her back awkwardly. I sighed; I had some catching up to do if I were going to understand this mess.
Artemis' POV (a few minutes previously)
When I awoke, I was enraptured within the luxuries of warmth and silk. Truly an amazing feat, given that my tent bed didn't have silk on it… my eyes shot open as I sat up strait in my bed. My bed, the one in my cabin…
"What the hell is going on…?" I whispered quietly to myself before coming to realization. "AM I FREE? WHAT'S GOING ON?" I asked nobody in particular. Had all of our hard work paid off? Did Percy and I get out of our time stop? I rushed out of my room and found a very disgruntled looking Thalia.
Clamping my hands on her shoulders, I asked her, "Thalia what day is it today?" She gave me a look like I may have been going insane, but I had to know. She responded with,
"Um, I'm pretty sure that today is the day after Valentine's Day, Milady." Oh my goodness. "I'm free." Oh. My. Goodness. "Finally free." OH MY GOODNESS I GOTTA TELL PERCY! I ran outside eager to let him know the good news, yelling out, "I'M FREE!" The passerby people looked around in confusion, but I didn't care. I AM FREE YOU SILLY MORTALS! TAKE IN MY EXCITEMENT! FEEL MY HAPPINESS AND ELATION!
I half skipped, half ran as I made my way to the dining hall, knowing that Percy would be there at 7 o'clock. When I arrived, Percy was sitting at our table, quietly eating some eggs when my eyes met his. His eyes did not look happy. I dismissed it; we were free of the time stop, right? My eyes must have conveyed my message, because he shook his head. No? I made my way over to him, and before I could let him know, he spoke first.
"Artemis, we aren't free. I have a method of knowing if the day has repeated or not, and it has indeed repeated. We aren't free."
No. no…. this can't be true… I looked over to the calendar near the table we were at, and sure enough Valentine's Day was not marked over as it had been every day since the beginning. I let out a sob and a loud, resounding "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" before putting my head in my arms on the table in front of me. Percy awkwardly patted my back, and it was a little comforting, given the situation. Then I felt the presence of the huntresses coming forth when they heard my outcry, but they all stood around the table, not knowing what to do.
Thalia's POV
I watched the two with increasing awkwardness as the huntresses around me gathered, each of them not sure what to do. Percy looked at us and asked, "Each of you, what day do you believe was yesterday. That question again. I came forth, and answered, "Valentine's Day was yesterday, am I correct?" Each of the other Huntresses followed suit and agreed with me that today was the day after Valentine's Day.
Percy let out a sigh before saying, "I should have guessed that you all would get involved somehow. I'll let Artemis explain it."
The huntresses looked at the pair with slight concern before one of them said, "Are you alright milady?"
Artemis looked up from where she was, with Percy patting her back, and gave an awkward smile. "I guess I have a little bit of explaining to do." The other Huntresses around me nodded, and she continued, "Well, this isn't the first time that Percy and I have been through today. Athena calls it a time loop, but we've been calling it a time stop since we can't escape. Essentially, every time Valentine's Day ends, it gets reset to that morning. I don't know why, but it would appear that some things don't remain the same, of which the latest is that you all have retained your memories for some reason."
"Wait, you mean to say we've repeated Valentine's Day?" one of the younger huntresses asked. Artemis and Percy nodded their heads in unison.
This caused the huntresses a bit of distress, as one might imagine. I had my own concern, which I vocalized. "Milady, if you and Percy have been trapped in Valentine's day, well, just how long have you two been trapped?" It seemed like the most important question. If they had been trapped for a long time, then who knew how long all of us were going to be stuck?
"We've been stuck here for about two months' worth of time. We have half a prophecy to explain why we are stuck, but for now we need to just try different things until we get free. That's why I made a fool of myself just now." Artemis said. "I had thought us free from the time stop since I had woken up in my cabin; this is the first time that had happened."
This was certainly a predicament. But on the other hand…
"Huntresses!" I started to announce. "You all can guess what this means. Until Artemis and Percy figure this out, we have a free pass to test out all possible pranks on the campers as we can without any problems!" It made perfect sense, after all. If the campers had no clue that we pranked them, then we could do it over and over with the time loop in effect. At the same time, it also meant that we could come up with as many new pranks as possible without the campers remembering that they had ever been caught in them before. And if the time loop ended, then no harm no foul as long as nobody died, they would've gotten pranked in the end anyways.
It was the ultimate prank planning setup. The Huntresses all gained mischievous looks in their eyes as they all realized the things that I was thinking about as I did. Today would be the best day ever. "Alright then, Milady, Percy, we'll just be on our way then, keep up the good work in figuring out what needs to be done. We all have pranking business to attend to." I said with a smile. Excellent timing, as they might say.
As we left the two together in the dining hall, we all began to plot on how exactly we would go about pranking the campers.
Percy's POV
"So," I began, "How much do you want to bet that they're still going to go with the same pranks as when I first joined the hunt?"
Artemis watched the huntresses as they made their way out of the hall. "I'd say there's an 80 percent chance of them doing the same pranks, given that they might as well have not done them yet."
"Yeah…"
I began to remember the day after I had just joined the hunt, how everyone was pretty accepting, how Phoebe was so inquisitive about my life, about how I told her how awesome my mom was…
I was suddenly hit with a pang in my chest. Homesickness, the bane of every hero's existence. How was my mom and Paul doing? I hadn't seen them in a long time, I think it had been months before the time stop even started.
"On another note, have I ever told you about how wonderful my mom is?" I asked the maiden goddess next to me.
She looked pensive for a moment, before responding, "I've only heard what you told Phoebe and the huntresses so far, about the blue food and smelly Gabe and the like."
I see. Suddenly, I had a solution. "Artemis, you're coming with me to see my mom." I told the goddess.
"Oh yeah?" She said with a smirk, "Finally letting me meet your mom, are you? I thought the day would never come, Percy Jackson." Oh, she's going to play this game? Well two can play at that.
"Yeah, I thought that it would be nice for you to get to know her, given that I want to meet your family too. Not Zeus, I already know him, but your mom, Leto, when do I get to meet her?" Her face drained of color as she thought about what I had just said.
"Um, how about we hold off on that. For, maybe a long time." She refused to say any more on the subject, so I decided not to badger her anymore and I told her the address for my mom's apartment in Manhattan. She nodded, and after grabbing my shoulder, I was whisked into millions of particles once more, experiencing all of life's secrets and emotions all at once, before I was swaying in front of my mom's apartment.
"I don't think I'll ever get used to teleporting." I said. Too weird of an experience for me to acclimate to.
After getting over my dizziness, I headed inside the building, using my key that I always had on me in case of emergencies or surprise visits, like today. Artemis followed behind, allowing me to lead the way.
I had always held a certain liking for the building. After the whole Smelly Gabe thing finally was taken care of, and my mom and Paul had gotten married, they had moved into a new apartment, once that looked nothing like the old one. The old apartment was old, run down; mold had begun to grow in the corners. This new apartment had bright green walls, lights that didn't flicker every few seconds, and my mom and Paul had even gotten a deal with a balcony that overlooked the streets.
We finally made it to my mom's apartment on the third floor. I knocked on the door and waited for my mom to answer the door. To my slight surprise, Paul opened the door looking a little tired. He blinked his eyes for a moment, before recognition flashed through his eyes. "Percy!" he exclaimed in his seeming tiredness. "Come on inside." And he held the door open for us.
"Sally, Percy's here!" Paul called into the apartment. A crash could be heard, and within seconds my mom was there, pulling me into a big bear hug. Not that I had ever been hugged by a bear, in fact I didn't even know where the phrasing bear hug even came from. Not that it mattered right now, since I was hugging my mom back as much as I could before she pulled away from me.
She gave the most heartwarming smile that I could imagine, filling me with security and happiness. I gestured to Artemis. "Mom, Paul, this is my friend Artemis." My mom gave Artemis a smile and welcomed her into the apartment. The door opened up to a living-room-esque area, and I sat down on a sofa that had a wood and glass coffee table in front of it. The whole place was very spacious and the walls were painted with yellows and blues mixed together to form the iridescence of the sky on a summer day.
Artemis sat down next to him, probably feeling a little uncomfortable in the scenery. "So," Sally sat down across from the two of them, along with Paul who sat down next to her. "To what do I owe the pleasure of hosting a goddess in my home?" Paul looked a little disconcerted for a moment, and looked like he wanted to say something, but held it back.
"Oh," Artemis said, "Percy had decided that he was a little homesick, and since I had nothing better to do, I came with him to visit you. He also insisted that I meet you, so here I am." She flashed my mom a smile, and my mom smiled back at her, and I let out a small sigh in relief; that could have gone a lot worse…
"Wait so you're actually Artemis, like the maiden goddess of the hunt who hates guys and all that…"
Paul was cut off by a laugh from Artemis. "Yes, I am indeed the goddess of the hunt. I don't necessarily hate males, but I despise the attitude that a majority of them have, believing themselves gods and superior to females while being pigs in the way that they look at girls as if they feel entitled to them. Nothing makes me angrier than a silly boy who thinks that he's the center of the world."
My mother gave a sly smile and I knew she was about to say something embarrassing. "So of course it would make sense that Percy befriended you, him being the most selfless son a mother could ask for." I gave a small groan and Artemis began to laugh at the statement. While I was embarrassed, I was comforted by the fact that Artemis hadn't taken offense at what my mom had said.
Artemis's POV (since I really don't know where to go with Percy's POV anymore)
It was rather comical to have the mother of your friend give praise to your friend as being such a selfless person, especially when he seemed embarrassed by it. He was so flustered, and the mom was laughing afterwards, and I couldn't help but laugh at the situation at hand. Percy really was a pretty selfless guy, and it was for that reason that I was able to befriend him.
Percy seemed to ease up a little bit as we laughed, and eventually he gave a chuckle too as the laughter died down. Now that the awkward tension was broken, Sally began, "Artemis, this is Paul, my husband."
I looked at the man in question, taking note of his appearance he had a mix of black and white hairs, giving him a sort of salt and pepper hair look. His eyes were a light brown, and he had a look of slight shock as he realized that I was sizing him up.
I gave a sideways glance at Percy, and my friend said, "He's alright Artemis, he even asked me if it was ok if he engaged to my mom and I told him it was fine. He's cool."
I gave a smile as I looked back at the man, a glint in my eyes as I said, "Oh alright then, if you say so Percy, then I won't turn him into a squirrel." Paul seemed to relax in his seat after I said this, and I gave a laugh. "Honestly," I said to them, "I don't intervene in the matters of people who are married, that's Hera's domain, and we have enough problems with each other without me breaking up a marriage because I don't like the guy. That happened once…" I trailed off as I remembered the event, it was funny to think about now that it was done, but I really didn't want to have to play matchmaker with Aphrodite and Eros for a month again as punishment.
I shook my head to wipe away the memories. "Let's just say I regretted my actions, anyways, I've been hearing a lot about you Sally, according to Percy you sure are the hot commodity."
Hearing me say this, Sally began to laugh. And by laugh I don't mean a short haha laugh. I mean it started out that way, but then she was giggling all over the place, losing balance while sitting down, falling over herself in place, before finally letting it all out and she began to uncontrollably laugh at what I said. Percy was laughing too, and he said,
"I didn't quite call you the hot commodity, but it might as well be true." The laughter eventually ceased, and I noticed that Paul was looking quite amused by the antics of his wife and her son. It truly was inspirational, that a mother and her son could get along so well.
After a couple of hours of hanging out with the two, they ended up going on their date (it still was Valentine's Day after all) and the two of us were left in New York City with nowhere to go and nothing to do. The day passed by as we walked around, talking about different things.
Eventually the daylight began to fade away, and I teleported us back to camp. We arrived on the beach, and I sat down. Apollo began the sun's descent and the light cascaded across the sky. I saw Percy sit down beside me and I said to him, "So, today was fun, we got to walk around the City, I met your mom, who will probably forget that she ever met me if the day repeats again." Percy nodded.
"Once we're out of the day, we'll have to make sure that you have proper introductions so that she'll remember you." Percy wanted his mom to remember me? I suppose it's important to make note of who your children are friends with, especially if they have a long history of murdering guys and turning them into wild animals if they annoy them… but that was the past, right? I wasn't sure. I know that Percy had made a profound impact upon my life, but I wasn't quite sure that I wouldn't turn the next guy who made a pass at one of my huntresses into an alpaca or something. I cleared my head of those thoughts, and decided to enjoy my time here on the beach with the demigod who had become my friend. I started up a conversation, not dissimilar to what we had been talking about while roaming New York.
Thalia's POV
It was purely by coincidence and accident that all of the huntresses accidentally started spying on the scene that unfolded before them. I could only watch as the two sat down next to each other and watched the sun set together. They laughed, talked, laughed some more as they told jokes and talked some more.
It looked… endearing? I mean that I know that of course Percy and Artemis had spent a lot of time together already, and of course I had already known that they were best friends but…
Well, look at the two of them, sharing the beach with each other and having a good time. It wasn't until a young huntress by the name of Samantha commented, "They look kinda cute together, don't they?" that I realized that they did, in fact, look a little bit like a couple. Like a dating couple. Like the ones in camp that the huntresses had been pranking all day.
The huntresses had already begun to discuss the topic at hand, which was exactly what I had just been thinking. But wait. Artemis? Percy? A couple? What. It didn't make sense to me. but at the same time, it made perfect sense, and I couldn't help but let a small grin ease its way into my normally neutral face.
I looked to Phoebe to see her stance on the whole thing, to be surprised when she seemed to be leading the conversation. "They look so good together. I mean, come on girls, this might just be the best thing that's happened to her since Apollo embarrassed himself on Hephaestus TV in the 18th century. We just have to get them together.
A lot of the huntresses were agreeing with the older huntress. The one that probably had the most reason to distrust men. The Huntress the was now vouching for Percy to date their mistress. How times have changed.
And yet, it would be a challenge. And Thalia could not back down from a challenge, no matter how hard it might seem.
AND CUT.
Woooooooo, finally punched this out. Sheesh, and Valentine's day is right around the corner. Anyways, that's all that happens this chapter. The Hunt retains their memories. Artemis meets Sally Jackson. Oh and the Huntresses are now (unwittingly) working with Aphrodite to get Artemis a boyfriend. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. I'm excited for what the next chapter might bring. Anyways, if you're still reading this, leave me a review as to things you'd like to see happen. I read ever review, and if you want the huntresses to get operation Pertemis underway with different shenanigans, let me know what you think should happen. I was also reading through my past chapters, and I decided that I needed to fix up a couple of spelling errors and clean up a few things, which will probably happen within the next few weeks. I'll write to you all soon, and take care! Word count minus Author's notes: 4053
