Double Jealousy
Chapter 10: Osamu Mitsuo
It was a crowded afternoon at the café for such a nice day. Mamoru had hoped less people would have chosen to sit indoors and enjoy they day under the warm sun but apparently he was wrong. He wanted to go home where there was only silence and hot black coffee but he couldn't. He had to sit there with Maino Katsumi and discuss the topic of their teamed project, as well as how they were going to organize the whole thing; they were both aiming for perfect scores.
During their talk they also, mostly Katsumi though, joked around and mentioned irrelevant things, delaying his leave even more. He wasn't really bothered by it but Motoki had asked him to drop by for company and he didn't like being late.
"So what do you think?" The brunette asked him over something he wasn't really paying attention on, so he just shrugged. "Then you don't mind starting on Wednesday?"
"Tomorrow? Not at all," He said, understanding she was talking about when to meet to start their research. "Want to meet at the public library?"
"Five o'clock?" He nodded. "Great," She smiled at him; he noted she did that a lot. "By the way Mamoru-kun, have you heard? They say..." Katsumi went on about some gossip that was going around the campus; he only half-listened.
It was about half an hour later that Katsumi had said another joke and he smiled politely, truth be told, the girl knew how to joke. Her company wasn't bad at all and Mamoru thought he was lucky she was his partner; they got along well.
All of a sudden Mamoru sneezed, interrupting Katsumi's next joke, and he felt a light stab in his stomach. What that was for, he did not know, but the feeling of guilt spread through him, as if he had done something he shouldn't have. He turned his head to the window; a strong pull told him that the reason of all this was there and his deep blue eyes caught a glance of familiar long, blond hair wave at the end of the glass before disappearing. That couldn't have been Odango Atama, could it?
"Mamoru-kun?" The green-eyed girl snapped him out of his train of thoughts, "Are you ok?" She asked and turned her gazed towards where he was staring at but found nothing out of the ordinary.
"Yes, I'm sorry Maino-san, I just remembered I have to meet Motoki about now," He stood up and left some money on counter, that fully covered the bill.
"It's Katsumi and like I said earlier, I'll pay my half."
"No I insist but I have to go, see you on Wednesday," He smiled and made his leave.
"Have a good afternoon," Katsumi waved at his back and sighed, 'Such a gentleman...'
She took out her phone and dialed Reika's number, a sly smile on her face. 'It seems we have a new plan on our hands;' she thought to herself and drank another sip of her soda.
Usagi was stomping through the streets of Juuban towards the arcade, her arms tensed out of anger. The only thing Luna could do was watch her worriedly; the blonde looked ready to blow up and the problem was that no one ever knew how she would surprise them the next moment. The black cat just hoped this time wasn't going to be one of them.
Usagi had kept mumbling under her breath things about the jerk without pausing to breathe and was now walking with her eyes shut tight by the memory of him making fun of her hair. "Who does he think he is anyway? The prince of earth!?"
She should have learned by now that walking with her eyes closed was an awfully bad idea, but as everyone around her knew, she was a slow learner. So Luna wasn't completely startled when the blonde collided with someone; she was surprised though it wasn't the dark-haired man.
"Owww..." Usagi whined while rubbing her nose, then realized it wasn't the jerk's chest and opened her mouth to apologize, when she heard a chuckle.
"So we meet like this again, huh?" Came a male voice from above her. She titled her head to see who she had bumped into and recognized the face of Osamu Mitsuo smiling down at her.
"Y-Yes!" Usagi blush slightly, taken aback by his perfect form, even his uniform didn't crumple.
"Are you ok, Tsukino-san?" He asked politely in a warm and silvery voice.
"I'm fine thank you, what about you?"
"Better than fine, I'm sorry for bumping into you."
"I'm the one at fault! I was walking with my eyes closed," Her voice lowered at the last sentence.
"But I didn't see you either, which means it was my bad too."
"Yeah but still..." Usagi trailed off, her blush deepened. This guy was nothing like the jerk. If she had crashed into him, he would yell at and make fun of her, unlike the young man standing in front of her. Mitsuo was polite, asked if she was ok and took responsibility too. They were the exact opposite.
"How about we agree we are both at fault?"
"I don't think it's true but ok," She smiled shyly at him.
"By the way may I ask you a question, Tsukino-san?"
"You can call me Usagi, Osamu-san, and yes go ahead."
"Only if you call me Mitsuo," He played along.
"It's ok, there is no need to."
"I insist," She stared at his sincere smile, he looked happy about something, almost excited. It was difficult not to be affected by it and his handsome face.
"A-Alright," She stumbled. She felt a kind of uneasiness and the need to fidget around.
"Good. Now you wouldn't happen to know an arcade around here called um..." He made a small pause trying to remember its name, "Clown...crow...what was it again?"
"Crown Arcade?" The blonde interrupted his thoughts, giving him the answer.
"Yeah that was it! Crown Arcade!" He clapped his hands "You know the place Usagi-san?"
"Actually that's where I was heading, want me to show you the way?" She smiled from excitement as she had not only ran into him, a really nice and gorgeous upperclassman who somehow he knew her name, but they were also going to the same place.
"Only if I won't be a bother to you."
"You won't, are you meeting your friends there?"
"Yeah, what about you?"
"I always go there, it's the best arcade in town!"
"Really? Since when have you been going there?"
Luna watched as the two teenagers walked away from her. Usagi had completely forgotten about her and her anger about Mamoru. The blonde looked happy to see the guy and judging from his school uniform, he was probably a classmate of the hers. The black feline shook her small head; this girl could be friends with everyone. At least now Usagi had someone else as her company and she could go find a nice place to sleep under the warm sun. Oh how she loved spring.
Mamoru entered the arcade and was surprised not to see Odango Atama at the Sailor V game; she was always there at this hour. His eyes searched for blond hair resembling food and soon spotted a petite form trying to playing the claw crane and failing miserably at it.
What caught his attention though wasn't this, it was the dirty-blond that laughed with her and then inserted 100 yen in the machine. They seemed to know each other but he had never seen Usagi hang out with a boy before, except with that short guy that wore glasess, he couldn't recall his name, though he was sure it was something like Umiro-Ukino, something like that anyway.
But this guy, he was a different case. He looked older and less friendly... more...he wasn't sure how to put it, but he didn't like the aura around this guy for some reason. It was something similar to the one of prince-charming in romantic movies, the ones that the girls always fell for.
"You know the guy?" Motoki appeared on his side out of thin air starling the black-haired man, but he stayed expressionless, not even flinching.
Mamoru shook his head, "He's probably one of Odango's acquaintances," He shrugged.
"Hmmm? Well it looks like it; his uniform is from Usagi-chan's school," The blond man said, "You think he is a new friend of hers?"
"It seems so."
They watched as the boy won a white stuffed bunny and handed it to Usagi, who blushed as their fingers touched, smiled at him and said something; she had probably thanked him but they were too far away to hear.
"Maybe he is more than a friend," Motoki's lips formed a smirk as Mamoru turned to glare at him.
"Define 'more than a friend'," His emotionless voice almost turned into a hiss, almost.
"Well they have been here for about half an hour and all they do is playing games, chatting, smiling at each other and laughing and now he even gave her a plus toy. Doesn't it look like something more?" He hinted to his friend, who frowned and they kept observing the two blonds.
The middle-schoolers stepped aside for three little kids to play the game and they went to the vending machine next to the claw crane. The boy paid for two cokes and offered one to Usagi, who shook her hand in front of her as a no, saying something and the other blond replied to it in a way which made her blush and accept the refreshing drink.
"See, now he bought her a drink," Motoki went on.
"I don't see what you are getting at," The blue-eyed man hissed in annoyance. If Motoki was trying to imply something he should just say it; he didn't find the situation amusing as he did. Mamoru didn't know why but he was bothered by that that boy being so close to Odango Atama.
"A date. It looks like a d-a-t-e," The part-timer emphasized the last word and shook a finger as if correcting a small kid.
"A date?" Mamoru repeated. "No. Odango Atama doesn't do dates," His frown deepened and he glared at the two teens drinking their cokes.
"And why is that?"
The dark-haired man turned to glare at his friend, only to see him having a huge grin plastered on his face, even his eyes smiled. "'No one would willingly date an annoying crybaby like her."
"Oh, but it doesn't look this way right now, does it?"
"He is just one of Odango's new friends."
"He is or do you want him to be?" Motoki questioned.
"What do you mea-"
"I'm sorry Mamoru someone's at the helper's counter, I must go," The part-timer could barely talk with his lips stretched so much, in what seemed like a permanent grin on his features, and he walked away, not explaining what he meant with his last question, leaving a confused Mamoru behind him.
The college student went back at death-glaring the young boy, wondering what his friend was implying. Why couldn't Motoki talk straightly for once?
He watched as that boy turned his head and stared directly at him, while Usagi was preoccupied playing the Pac-man game. Did he know him? Had Odango Atama said something about him and he just couldn't remember? He glanced at the klutz and dismissed that idea out of his head. The petite blonde hadn't even noticed him the whole time. His eyes turned back at the boy with her and his expression went stoic, all but his eyes which were throwing daggers at him.
The brown-eyed boy was staring back at him challengingly. His expression was totally different from what it had been all this time with Usagi. He didn't look polite or gentle, he was eyeing him coldly and with superiority. His lips formed a sly smirk and then he turned back to Usagi with his previous face on.
Mamoru decided he didn't like this guy nor did he trust him. He looked suspicious, too suspicious. And if looks could kill, the middle-schooler's head wouldn't be on his neck anymore.
The problem was those stupid feelings, in the pit of his stomach, that kept nagging him from the moment he had entered the arcade, wouldn't go away. Why did he feel as if something of his was taken away? And this feeling of anger and the need to punch someone in the face? Well he had a good target in front of him but knew better than that. Control was everything in one's mind.
However still, a punch to his smirking face wouldn't be such a bad idea.
"Is everything alright Mitsuo-san?" Usagi asked softly. She had the impression his aura had just changed nature but as she looked at his kind face she decided it was just her imagination.
"Yes, everything's fine," He smiled again. It seemed that his smiles were contagious. Since every time he did so she couldn't help it but smile back. In addition, all this time from the moment she had run into him until now her cheeks hadn't lost their blush and she worried if they were going to stay like that permanently. "Are you having a good time Usagi-san?" He asked.
"Yes! What about you, Mitsuo-san?" She answered excitedly.
"Couldn't have had a better afternoon."
Not much time had passed after that, when Mitsuo's friend arrived and came over to them. Mitsuo introduced the two and afterwards they excused themselves as they went to play a car-racing game.
"Yo, Usagi-chan," Motoki appeared in front of her with a grin on his face. The younger girl yelped and made a step back.
"Motoki-onii-san, you startled me!" She took a deep breath and the man chuckled.
"I'm sorry, my bad," He smiled sheepishly rubbing the back of his head. "Ne, Usagi-chan, who was the boy with you?" The part-timer asked playfully, making the younger blonde blush.
"He is a boy from school, we bumped into each other earlier and were both heading here, so we decided to hang out till his friend came, why do you ask?"
"So it wasn't a date?" Motoki sounded disappointed and his question made Usagi's blush deepen.
"N-No, why would you think so?" She stuttered.
"Nothing, never mind. Just do me a favor: don't tell Mamoru it wasn't."
"Why would I talk to the jerk about it?"
"Just in case you do, don't tell him. I'm not saying you should lie; just don't answer this question, ok?" He winked at her, his mood was back to playful.
"Why?"
"It's a se-c-re-t!" He said and kept smiling as the girl raised an eyebrow.
"Will it make him angry?" Motoki nodded, "Then I'm in," She said and the two blonds smiled evilly.
"By the way Usagi-chan, hadn't Ami-chan mention that you have a test on Wednesday?"
"Aaaah! You're right! And today is Tuesday! Oh no, I have to leave, NOW!" She hurriedly grabbed her bag and bowed saying her goodbyes and rushed out of the arcade, leaving a chuckling Motoki behind her.
"Where's Odango running to?" Mamoru asked the blond as he came to his side.
"She has to study for a test they're having tomorrow."
"Did she mention what class it's for?" Mamoru asked, a hint of worry in his voice.
Motoki tapped a finger on his chin, "Hmm...if I remember correctly Ami-chan said it was in English."
"Oh great, now I will have to be on guard for flying failed tests for the whole week!" He said and the expression of exasperation and hopelessness in the dark-haired man's face caused Motoki to burst out laughing. He had the feeling that things were going to get amusing soon, really soon.
"So, how did it go?" Sekari asked sitting down at the café.
"It went well, I think Mamoru is starting to open up to me. Slowly but he is," Katsumi answered excitedly with a broad smile.
"That's great! Mamoru-kun does take his time to trust people but, once he starts, it is a lot faster and easier to get close to him," Reika said.
"Then I'm on a good path," The brown-eyed girl nodded, "Finally!"
"But what are we going to do now with plan C, the project gets in the way," The short-haired girl asked.
"I have a better idea," She moved her green eyes to look in her friends' eyes, "A new plan."
"So that's why you called us here…" Sekari realized before smirking, "Go on, I can't wait to hear this."
"But before that," Reika interrupted, "I want to order some coffee."
"She is not bad." Mitsuo's friend told him during their race, "Pretty cute too."
"I know."
"So that's why you texted me. Ha and I thought I would never see you in an arcade again after the last time."
"Well it looks like it won't be the last time either."
"I don't mind helping you out but you have to stop smirking like that, it's creepy."
"I'm sorry but I can't help it, everything played out perfectly, just as I planned."
"The way to seduce Tsukino Usagi, huh?"
"Exactly that."
"I don't think you need me to wish you any luck to succeed; you have already charmed her. I only wonder how much time it will take for her to fall for you."
"Let's hope not too much."
"I bet she won't."
"Aaaah..." Usagi sighed once more. She was sitting on the floor, her elbows on her books that were scattered all around the small tea-table. She had her chin in her palms and stared at the ceiling daydreamingly, chewing the end of her pencil. "Aah…"
"Usagi-chan!" Luna brought her back to reality with her streak voice and she made a small jump in her sitting position, surprised. "I thought you came home early to study, not to stare blankly into space like that!"
"Buuuut, he was so nice."
"Who are you talking about this time?"
"Mitsuo-san," The blonde sighed again.
"The boy you crashed into?" She nodded. "He's from your school right?" Again her answer came with a nod. "Aren't you going to say anything?"
"He's such a gentleman too."
Luna placed a paw on her head. "I didn't mean that!"
"I don't care," Usagi said and let her pencil fly away from her as she laid down on the floor.
"When did you meet him?"
"Today, at school after lunch, we bumped into each other," With every sentence the blonde said she sighed; it was as if she was completely under his spell.
"You know you can't start crashing into more people than you already do."
"I know, I don't think my nose can handle more than the jerk's chest." She frowned remembering Mamoru's existence. "But I wouldn't mind exchanging him with Mitsuo-san."
"You could always learn how to walk properly," Luna suggested even though she knew her comment was going to be ignored.
"And he is so handsome too," Usagi sighed and continued daydreaming, tomorrow's test forgotten.
Luna closed her eyes and shook her head. Usagi was hopeless.
A/N: So, Mamoru did get jealous but he did not realized he did, since he is really dense and he is also a reserved and collected person, not looking for romance and love in every corner of the universe, he is ignorant to it, unlike Usagi here, who does do so and that's why she falls for Mitsuo so easily, but has she really fallen for him or she is just charmed by his looks and manners? Read to fine out ;) But don't worry Mamoru is about to get reaaally jealous, reeeeaaally soon 3:)
Preview of Chapter 11:
There was no-one there, no-one but him; him with her.
...
She pressed her upper arm against his, her head was right under his chin.
...
Mamoru turned his head to look at her as she looked up at him; their faces were centimeters apart.
...
Her body freeze over, yet she was boiling with anger.
...
"Then let me see what this 'nothing' is," She said and poked her head out.
...
"Maybe she is his girlfriend," Ami said as if it was just telling good morning to someone.
...
He was thinking the exact same line. 'Now that's really awkward'.
...
