Author's notes: The mentalist aspect hasn't really worked but I'll keep using the titles. But I hope you're enjoying the story.

Hannah's demeanour's very different as she waits for Debra's arrival than when she waited for her foster couple. Then she'd sat at the table, her head buried in her arms. She'd ignored Nick. She didn't look up when Laurie entered the room until Nick told her too. Laurie had sat beside her and repeated what Nick had told her, then she went to the door and invited the couple inside. Mr and Mrs Greenbaker greeted her with warm smiles and sat down opposite her. It had been awkward at first but they're experienced foster parents and soon had Hannah responding to them. They even got a small smile from her as they left. Nick had sat down next to her when they were alone, except for Samir back at the door. He'd attempted to come in, but Nick stopped him with a stare. Nick indicated to him that it would only be for two minutes, and in return he got a theatrical sigh.

"You did very well Hannah. They're nice people and they will look after you."

She looks at him.

"They said I can bring my doll and that we can make chocolate chip cookies. "

" I know, I heard. I'm still going to be around and you can call me if there are any problems, okay? "

Hannah noddrd her head.

Now she's sat at the table with her doll and Samir, she's suppose to be helping Samir finish the painting but her eyes move to the door and linger every few seconds. Samir gives up and begins to move the paints out of the way.

"We'll finish this later. "

Nick smiles at how grown up he acts but sombers when he realises that it's his illness that's probably caused him to grow up quickly. He thinks of Lelsey and the wisdom she had beyond her years.

Samir comes back to the table with some cards.

" Let's play snap. "

Hannah considers it, then shakes her head. Samir turns to Nick.

" How about you having a game Mr. Lawyer? "

" It's Nick "

" Whatever. How about it. "

Nick finds himself pushing off from the wall and sitting down opposite Samir to play. Samir grins at him.

" I'm taking you down. "

Nick rises an eyebrow.

" Really? You think so? "

" I bet you've never played this game. Plus you're old and slow. "

Nick stands up and shrugs off his jacket and begins to roll his sleeves.

" As it happens I was snap champion of my lunch table at school and I don't like to lose. "

Samir looks shrewdly in to Nick's eyes.

" I can believe that of you Mr. Lawyer. "

" Nick. "

" Sure thing Mr. Lawyer. "

Nick gives him a small smile and pats the table.

" Enough talking. Deal. "

Nick holds his own and the cards see saw between the two of them. Samir has his own cheerleading section as children wander in, see the game in progress and go off and bring others to watch. Nick has just a few cards left in his hand. The room is quiet not wanting to hinder Samir's concentration. Nick puts his last card down but it isn't a match, everyone barely seems to be breathing as Samir places cards from his deck on top of the pile, everyone watching for the matching card. When it comes Nick isn't quite quick enough as his hand lands on top of Samir. The kids cheer and Samir crows. Nick smiles and holds out his hand.

"Congratulations Samir, you played a good game. "

Samir stares at the outstretched hand in bewilderment and then offers Nick a closed first. Nick bumps him and Samir smiles.

" You're not so bad for a lawyer. "

"Thank you."

Everyone turns as the door opens. Hannah shrieks and is off her chair in a shot. Samir looks at Nick with a knowing, amused expression.

"I take it that's Debra. "

Nick repressed a smile and nods his head.

" It certainly is. "

Nick and Debra's mom watches them play for a few minutes. Nick's concerned at first as Hannah's excitement has her shutting out Samir. Samir plays absentmindedly with the snap cards while the two girls talk non-stop. Just as Nick thinks he may be having another game of snap, Hannah turns towards and introduces him to Debra and who's quickly brought under the spell of his smile and soon all three are chatting like old friends. Nick shares a look with Mrs Carroll and nods towards the door.

"Would you like a coffee?"

"Yes. thank you."

Nick bends over and gets Hannah's attention.

"We'll just be outside."

She nods her head and Nick and Mrs Carroll leave. Nick gets them coffee from the machine and manages to russell up a couple of chairs that he places at the side of the door and they both sit down with their drinks. Mrs Carroll turns to him.

"She's looking well and happy."

"Yes, this is a good hospital and I think Samir has something to do with it."

Her smile widens at the memory of her daughters face as the recipient of Samir's smile.

"Yes, he's quite a charmer."

"He's a good kid."

"What's going to happen to Hannah?"

"She's being discharged tomorrow and we've found a home for her, she met her foster parents a couple of hours ago."

Mrs Carroll leans back against the wall and sighs.

"It's all so sad, they were such a lovely family when her mother was alive."

Nick nods his head in understanding.

"Death bites hard."
