Nightlight

He shook himself suddenly, as if remembering composure before smiling gently "My, my, my, what do we have here? The newest guardian I assume?"

Isa's upper lip stiffened slightly at the mention of the title, "I'm not a guardian thanks, I'm sorry but who-"

"But of course, where are my manners?" interrupted the ma; a gleam hanging in his eye. It was different to North's enigmatic one; more inquisitive and playful; whether this was a good thing she hadn't yet decided.

As she watched, the man swept low in to a deep bow, hand stretched out towards her invitingly; a gesture which was dampened by the appearance of the knarled fingers.

"I am Nightlight, I beg you to forgive my rather withered appearance; I'm afraid I've seen better days" He straightened up and began to turn away, cloaking himself in shadows once more, "Unfortunately my number of believers has somewhat dwindled,"

"Hey wait-", Isa blurted out the words before she could stop them. Skipping quickly ahead of Nightlight, she spun around to face him, eyes alight with curiosity.

"What do you mean believers?"

A small smile curled around his lips, clearly finding something humorous. "You mean to say they haven't told you?" His eyebrows raised in a dismissive gesture, "- the more believers a sprite has, the more powerful they are. The more powerful they are, the better their appearance; unfortunate but that's the way it is. I'm sure children wouldn't love North as much if he looked weak and old"

Isa thought she glimpsed a sneer at the mention of the fat man, but it happened so quickly she couldn't be sure. "You know North and the others then?"

Nightlight looked at her imploringly, "Know them; I used to be one of them. I was tasked with guarding the one who makes us all who we are," he paused for effect "The Man in the Moon".

Isa remembered North mentioning the name before, saying that he'd been the one who'd ordered that she became the new guardian. Well, whoever he was, she couldn't say it meant anything to her.

She didn't even know what he looked like.

Was he short or tall?

Was he round and jolly like North?

Or stubborn like the aboriginal kangaroo?

She didn't think much of him. After all, he'd ordered for her to be pulled out of the sky and be tied down by some girl scouts; all for her to become a 'guardian'. Something she really couldn't say thrilled her in the least.

The guardians….there was so much they hadn't told her; true, she hadn't asked but she hadn't known. Surely if they wanted to gain her trust they should tell her everything?

"However-" her thoughts were interrupted once again by Nightlight's somewhat eerie voice, "despite my best efforts, he's found his replacement now with that winter sprite"

That caught her attention, "You know Jack?"

A grim smile stretched across the grey leathery skin, "My dear I know all of them," he sighed for a moment, as he did moving to position himself behind her. As he spoke again he voice caressed her ear. Up close, the voice sent a hollow feeling through her, though she could not fathom why. Up close, she could tell that it was a voice that had been around for years; far more than she. "However I must say the winter sprite is the one that holds the most interest for me".

"Why?"

"Because," Nightlight spoke slowly, carefully considering his words, "that winter sprite, Jack Frost as he's known, has replaced me in my position as protector of MiM – not that he knows it. I wish to know why; to know what makes him so powerful"

His footsteps echoed as he stepped back; she felt herself relaxing slightly, she hadn't realised how tightly she'd been holding herself. She wasn't remotely scared of Nightlight; it was more the fact that she couldn't figure out what she felt towards him that made her unsure. He seemed to be tiptoeing the line between friendly and hostile; and it didn't seem like much would sway him either way.

"But that's why I'm hear. I'm simply watching him, I mean no harm I assure you"

That didn't sound right.

"If you mean no harm, why don't you show yourself?"

Nightlight's expression became exasperated, "If I did they'd shun me, probably attack me," he thrust a finger towards her chest accusingly, "-like you I am an outcast, I must remain hidden down here in the dark, always in the dark. Even, if I tried to speak to Jack, he'd instantly tell them he'd seen me and I'd be back to square one. As far as they know, I no longer exist"

He let out another sigh and his yellow eyes snapped back up again; the piercing gaze flashing warningly. "Please do not tell them."

Isa said nothing, she just continued to look ahead. She couldn't decide what to think about this character. However, she did feel a sort of kinship towards him. Though she had not even known of the guardians for long, how long had she felt like an outcast?

In truth, as long as she could remember. Until she made up her mind, there couldn't be much harm in keeping quiet.

"May I ask-" Nightlight spoke again, "What are you doing here? In the Tooth Fairy's palace"

"I'm looking for my memories. The guardians are helping me find them, though they just want them to find out how I know Jack from when we were human"

That was when Nightlight started to laugh. It wasn't a chuckle, it wasn't even a cackle. They bounced of the surrounding walls, colliding and reverberating. It was a hollow, vicious sound, "Help you? Oh my dear, if they wanted to help you they'd show you straight away. The Tooth Fairy knows where everyone's memories are, she never fails. If she doesn't want to show you, you won't see them"

Isa felt a hot flush of anger up her neck. She took a step forward, meaning to intimidate, "How do I get them, tell me!"

Nightlight quietened his laughter, his gaze resting on her once more; his voice came out a whisper "Ask Jack"

From the direction of the tunnel came the sound of bellowing laughter and crowing of joy. Jack.

She turned back to face Nightlight but all she found was the shadows.
