Chapter 10: You Know NothingMy feet rested in the water as I watched Naruto chase after fish flinging them into the air for Sasuke to pin to trees. I was now afraid of the water in the forest after that leech cursed me or whatever. Sakura had volunteered to get the fire ready, so I was left with nothing to do. Naruto was heaving as he appeared above the water once more. Sasuke ordered him to do it again, saying four fish weren't enough. Naruto shouted and screamed at him splashing about. Naruto was saved from having to do it again by Sakura coming over. She was asking Sasuke for a fireball and Sasuke sighed saying that was enough fish. Naruto pointed to Sasuke muttering angrily. I laughed and helped Naruto out so we could eat. Naruto had left his clothing strewn all around so I had picked everything up and folded it feeling like his mother.
Sakura and Sasuke were already roasting their own fish when Naruto and I got over to them. Sakura handed me my own fish and I sighed. Fish wasn't one of my favourite foods, actually I despised fish, but I hated starving more. How do you know when fish is done?
"This is the fourth afternoon since the start of the second exam." Sasuke started speaking and I was surprised. It seemed so much longer to me. Which I should be happy it wasn't or we would be closer to failing. "The second test started around 2:30 meaning we only have about 25-26 hours left." He continued. Shit, this is going to be hard.
"That means many teams could have already passed." Sakura added and I nodded. Sasuke got out our scroll and looked down at it. Didn't we have a Heaven scroll?
"Uh guys why do we have an Earth scroll?" I asked and they looked at me.
"That's right you weren't there." Sakura said and I nodded slowly. "That man that attacked us earlier, Orochimaru burned ours." Sakura continued. You have got to be kidding me.
"Of course he did because we didn't have bad luck before." I moaned. Sakura agreed and I rubbed my temples feeling a headache coming on. The silence was deafening as we all thought about our problem.
"Uh, Zaria-chan your fish is burning." Naruto said and I let out a small scream and pulled my fish away from the flames. Fish is gross by itself burnt fish had to be worse. I was tempted to hold my nose and eat at the same time, but didn't want to show anyone my dislike of fish. I took a bite and winced, nope this is still gross. After a few minutes of silence Sakura began to talk.
"You know there might not be any Heaven scrolls left." She said and I looked over to her confused.
"How do you figure?" I asked.
"Well there were 80 entrants and 26 teams and only 13 of each scroll so the highest amount of teams that can pass is 13 right? And like we said earlier Orochimaru burned ours. So that means from that point on the teams that can pass went down by one, and we can't be sure if the rest of the scrolls are intact." Sakura explained.
"What's your point?" I asked my mind losing the point.
"If one scroll is destroyed it makes the other scroll meaningless." She finished and I had finally caught up.
"Since parting with our Konoha comrades" As Sasuke said this I suddenly felt very Russian. "We needed two days to heal our wounds but we have to be more active now. Either way the next enemy is our last chance." Sasuke declared. What is this Sparta? Nice inspiration speech Sasuke. He stood announcing he was going to be getting water. Sasuke you idiot you can't go by yourself. I stood up and chased after him. He glanced at me grumpily when I grabbed onto his sleeve.
"You may think you're Kami's gift to the world, but you can't go by yourself, not anymore." I explained and he grunted."Great conversation." I muttered.
"Why do you always say hell when you get hurt?" Sasuke asked after a minute had passed as we walked towards the fresh spring. I gripped my shoulder nails digging in slightly.
"Because that's where I go." I answered.
"Cut the shit Zaria." Sasuke ordered and I stopped staring at him. How dare he order me around! I gritted my teeth so as not to punch Sasuke in the face. I dropped down to my knees filling my canteen with water.
"I'm not lying you asshat." I growled out. He glared at me and it was silent again. "It's a bloodline thing I guess." I sighed and Sasuke crouched down beside me filling up his own canteen. "I train in hell when I mediate, but fighting there actually causes real wounds here." I tried to explain not really sure how everything worked myself. Sasuke didn't say anything but the tension between the two of us wasn't as heavy.
Sasuke threw his hand out hitting me in the chest and I stopped walking. I was about to ask what the hell his problem was when he was looking intently at our campsite.
"An enemy." He whispered to me. I nodded and we both burst out of the bushes about to ambush the white haired guy. However, as we got closer Naruto and Sakura yelled at us to stop. I skidded to a halt a cross the stones.
"It's Kabuto." Naruto shouted. Yeah because that makes me feel better. He smells disgusting. I would feel better if you stayed away from him. You know Daraku you sometimes sound like a father. Ijiwaru chuckled while Daraku grumbled.
"I stopped your teammates from opening your scroll." Kabuto said. Sasuke and I turned to Naruto knowing who had tried to open the scroll.
"Really guys?" I asked as Sasuke asked them what they had been thinking. I paused turning to Kabuto. "Why the fuck do you care?" He seemed surprised by my venom. "Where's your team?" I asked going on defence thinking we were going to be attacked. Sasuke tensed up as well his fingers gripping a kunai tighter.
"It's not like I'm after your scroll." Kabuto explained.
"That doesn't answer why you aren't with your team or why you stopped Naruto, now does it?" I said stepping closer to him. He stumbled back hands in front of him.
"Woah Zaria calm down. Kabuto was just being nice." Naruto said putting a hand on my shoulder. I shrugged it off.
"I don't know what's up your sleeve but I don't trust you as far as I could throw you." I growled out. That cursed wound is making you very aggressive. I like it. My right arm twitched and moved as if it had a mind of its own. I stepped back holding it closer to my body. Sasuke stepped forward.
"So you're after the Heaven scroll too?" Sasuke asked. Kabuto shook his head.
"No I already have both. Something's happened and I'm on my way to the tower to meet up with my teammates." He said. Something happened? I wouldn't have the two scrolls together, it's easier to steal it. Once more I stepped forward.
"What's this something?" I demanded and Kabuto looked over at me again. His eyes were not the same as when he was looking at Naruto or Sakura. They were harder and angry.
"Why should I tell you?" He asked and I bared my teeth. My right arm broke my own grasp on it and reached for a kunai. Kabuto blinked as I stared in amazement at my own arm. I…I can't control it. I can't help you. It's the curse, it's stopping us from helping you. Kabuto sneered at me and turned to everyone else.
"Well I'm off." He announced suspiciously. He could have just left, but no he had to announce it. Sasuke's eyes darkened and I rolled my eyes.
"Fight me!" Sasuke challenged. There is another person here. Eh? Who? I…I can't tell? What do you mean you can't? You've done it before. There was silence and I frowned. It's the curse isn't it? Yes. Of course. I turned trying to spot anything different, but without my heightened senses I got nothing. There was something about Kabuto that made me anxious, he was stronger than he made himself appear. I understood why Sasuke was attacking Kabuto, but I was nervous.
"Sasuke what are you saying?" Naruto yelled.
"Hurry up I want to get out of this god forsaken forest." I said to Sasuke.
"Zaria! What do you have against Kabuto?" Sakura demanded from me.
"You're serious?" Kabuto said.
"Sorry, we don't have any time left." Sasuke said. You don't apologize to the enemy!
"Hey Sasuke! Kabuto-san helped us out!" Naruto yelled and I punched him in the back of the head. He glared at me as Sakura stuttered about.
"What reason does Kabuto have to help us? Don't you think that is suspicious?" I asked them. They grew quiet and Sasuke and Kabuto were still just staring at each other. "Sasuke what the hell are you waiting for?" I shouted at him.
"Shut up." He hissed. Oh hell no! What a brat. I growled rolling my eyes at the fools and charged at Kabuto. Sakura and Naruto yelled at me and Sasuke still just stood there, pointless. Kabuto stopped my kunai with his own. He jumped back and I followed charging again.
"It seems that you don't like me." He teased as he tossed aside my shuriken that I had thrown. "The test may have changed you but it seems to not have changed your teammates." He said louder so that everyone could hear. "Sasuke challenged me instead of just attacking, which you did. I can tell you what path you should go on if you call off your attack dog." Kabuto chuckled when I growled even louder pushing off the ground with all four limbs.
DOG! DOG! Kill him Zaria how dare he calls us a dog! Calm yourself. She is close to losing control again because of the curse. I jumped back to stand behind everyone as if they were my buffer.
"But I'll tell you as we move the smoke from that fish can be sensed from far away. Wild beasts and enemies could be headed this way." Kabuto explained and once more Ijiwaru spoke up about the secret person. I stared at the bush behind me before running off to follow everyone else. We jumped and swung from the trees and I felt like I was Tarzan, but with more clothes. Sasuke was talking with Kabuto in the front, but I couldn't pay attention. There was something off and it was nagging me the whole time. Naruto called out to me and I turned to him.
"Seriously Zaria why do you hate Kabuto?" Naruto asked me with a cock of his head.
"He smells bad." I answered and Naruto stumbled in surprise.
"He smells bad? Of course he does we've been in a forest for four days." Naruto shouted at me. I glared at him.
"You think I don't know that Naruto. He smelled bad before this exam. He is suspicious. There is something strange about his need to help us. Why would he want to help us?" I explained.
"Ino, Chouji, and Shikamaru helped us." Naruto offered. I looked over to him and he was staring at me hard.
"Yes, but you knew them from school. You have a history right?" I asked and he nodded. "You have never met this guy until this exam started. People don't help strange people, they just don't. Humans suck Naruto." I huffed. Naruto remained quiet for a while before stopping. I almost fell from my tree when I tried to stop with him as well. "Naruto we are going to fall behind."
"Why do you hate people so much? What was so bad that you don't trust anyone?" He asked stepping closer and holding onto my shoulders. I looked away from his face scrunching up.
"Because people suck Naruto that's why. They are shitty that's all you need to know." I brushed him off and went to catch up with everyone. I didn't make it far when Naruto grabbed my hand and I was pulled into his chest from the abrupt stop. "What?" I cried at him. "What do you want me to say Naruto? You don't understand." I seethed hoping the tears that wanted to be released would stay where they belonged. Naruto dropped his arms stunned. Zaria….you don't understand anything.
"I don't understand?" Naruto growled and I stepped back at the anger that he was showing me. "I do understand Zaria," He hissed my name, "I understand very well. This village has hated me since I was born. I tried everything to make them happy, but they just continued to treat me like trash. Nothing I did would be right. I wasn't allowed to shop here, people threw stones at me if I got too close. Parents wouldn't let their children play with me. I didn't find out till I made genin this year why everyone hated me." Naruto whispered at me but I was chilled.
"And why was it?" I whispered back. Naruto looked at me suddenly nervous.
"I'm…I umm…" He was having trouble.
"Naruto I'm sorry for being an asshole, but trust me anything you say I will still be your friend." I said noticing how distraught he was becoming. I did know nothing. I was making assumptions and doing just as the saying says, making an ass of myself.
"I'm the Kyuubi container." He whispered. I nodded not knowing what that meant.
"Naruto I don't know what that means." I whispered back and Naruto seemed surprised.
"I forgot you're not from here. The kyuubi is the nine tailed kitsune. It attacked Konoha destroying the village and killing a lot of people. The fourth Hokage sealed the demon inside of me." He explained the abridge version. I nodded.
"Why would I not like you?" I asked confused. Naruto grew even more confused than me.
"The demon is inside of me." He said like that made all the difference. I nodded again.
"Naruto you said that already." He began to laugh and I stood there awkwardly.
"You are so strange Z. People think that I am the demon not the container." Naruto finally explained and I donned a look of anger.
"That is why I don't like people Naruto. They are ignorant and foolish." I said and Naruto pulled me into a hug. "How are you so happy?" I asked.
"I wasn't always happy. But, I decided I was going to become Hokage so they would all have to respect me." Naruto breathed into my hair. We broke apart staring at each other. We both blushed and decided now would be a good reason to catch up with everyone. "I'll get you to tell me one day Zaria." Naruto said seriously once more. I raised an eyebrow.
"Good luck."
