We arrived late. But that was Ciel's plan. I think he is a cute sweetheart, and I'm not afraid to tell him this, as you can tell from his giant blush and my giggle. The only problem is that we have to wait until the cart with rose petals arrives. Yeah that's right, we are about to do something memorable that no one in the church will ever forget.
I leant against the church as I waited. Ciel and Sebastian had wandered off to somewhere, leaving me to wait for the cart. I could hear Undertaker coming up behind me but I don't know why I jumped when he made his presence known. That man… Honestly, I don't know how to describe him. I guess free spirited is the best definition for him, but something about him bothers me and I just can't put my finger on it.
"I wonder why, hehe, you're not inside at the moment." He giggled.
"I'm waiting." I said, without looking at him.
"Yes, I know. The Lord's cart, it should be here momentarily. But, until then, let's have a nice chat." I saw him smile from the corner of my eye. 'Not going to look at him. Definitely not going to look at him. He's way creepy.'
"About what?" I asked blankly.
"Wouldn't' you like to know?" He teased. I looked at him and smiled, this seemed to unnerve him slightly. He recomposed himself to that lunatic stage so quickly that I doubted my own eyes. "How does it feel to become a pawn to the Queen's Watch dog?" He continued to tease.
"I don't know, how does it feel?" I threw it right back at him and smiled sweetly. His smile faltered for a moment.
"You sure do have a wicked sense of humor, girl. Speaking of girl, I never caught your name, Miss…?" He asked quite calmly, but he didn't lose that wicked smile on his face.
I squinted at the path that the cart I was waiting for was supposed to be coming down. I think I spotted something. "Kitt. It's just Kitt, no miss, lady, nothing."
"Well, then Miss Catherine, I hope we can be good friends in the future because I certainly like your sense of humor. Hehe." He giggled again.
"Well, then, consider us friends." I smiled, not wavered by the fact he knew my full first name. I now knew who he was. I knew his presence felt familiar, it's a lot like Grell. "I have a question though."
His head tilted to look at me more directly, which I guessed meant go ahead and ask. I saw a glint of his eyes through his hair. "Does that Shinigami record book in your cloak say anything about me? I could really use some hints." I said it so nonchalantly that even Undertaker had to backpedal. Once he grasped that I knew, he asked "What gave it away?"
"You have the same presence as Grell. But that only gave me a suspicion. I saw your scythes pop out of the bottom of your cloak, and felt the power radiating off them. Then I saw the book binding pop out. Your carelessness will be the end of your disguise. Don't worry about me telling, though, we are friends after all." I smiled at his amused face.
"You are quite the strange girl." He mumbled his smile slightly smaller.
"So I've heard." I smirked. He burst out laughing.
"Yeah. I know nothing about you! That's why I had the book. I was hoping there was something in here about you."
"Well, thanks for the help!" I exclaimed sarcastically.
"I can't allow a human to know that we exist, but you're not human, I don't think. In fact, I would kill any regular being if they knew what I was." My eyes widened, but I relaxed as he said the next thing. "You seem to be a special case though."
"What are 'regular beings'?" I humored, delight written all over my face.
"Eh, demons, angels, you know, the normal ones."
"So, I'm abnormal."
"No, you're paranormal." He corrected, chuckling like a maniac.
"Well, you're kind." I replied sardonically.
We both laughed and joked until the cart came into view, I was sourly disappointed.
"Well, take this." He held out his hand with something in it. I couldn't tell what it was, so I held out my hand to receive it. He dropped it into my hand, it was surprisingly heavy.
"What is this?" I asked as I held the weight.
"Oh, you have nothing to put it on." He tossed me a chain that was like a bracelet.
"I repeat, what is this?" As asked as I fiddled with the objects. Undertaker's smile grew too big for his face.
"It's the death charm."
My eyes widened and I nearly dropped the chain. The charm, however, managed to slip through my fingers.
Undertaker bent down to pick up the charm. I slid my foot over it to stop him. He stood up, a confused look on his face.
"Yes?" He asked politely and innocently. What a faker. What is he up to?
"Why? Why are you doing these things? What are you up to?" I asked. But, before he could answer I suddenly had a feeling of dread. I don't want to know what goes through this man's head.
"You know what? I don't want to know. Don't say anything more. See you later." I turned around and started towards the front doors of the church with the cart. I noticed that Undertaker was walking towards the graves. Fine, do what you want. I don't care. Do I? Interesting.
"You sure are an interesting girl. We shall meet again! Hopefully we will meet on good terms!" He called in his usual carefree tone.
I snorted. "Yeah, me to." I mumbled more to myself than to him.
...
When I reached the front doors Sebastian was already there and so was Ciel. I wonder what they were up to. And why did they make me do all of the work!
"You finally arrived." Sebastian sounded impatient.
"I would have been faster but this cart is as big as I am, and I was carrying it up hill." I retorted.
Sebastian ignored me as he walked towards me. I took a step back, not completely sure what he was going to do. I closed my eyes as soon as he was close enough I could smell his scent. A soft vanilla smell, it was nice, but I was still too scared to pay much more attention to it than that. He reached around me and grabbed the cart and started to pull it the remainder of the way. He should know better that to tease me like that. Of course I am going to get him back, just not sure how yet.
"Uh, Kitt…?" I heard Ciel say carefully.
I quickly snapped out of my devious thoughts.
"Hmm…?" I asked.
"Are you alright? You had a seemingly scary look on your face a couple of minutes ago."
I panicked inside, but my face remained blank. I can't let them know I'm plotting some evil doing. "I'm completely fine!" I said cheerfully, maybe a little too cheerfully. Eh, I'm always happy, why should now be any different?
I remembered the answer to that question when the church door opened and the sounds of weeping and cries came to my ears. My smile faded to a grim look, it's quite ironic if you think about it.
Ciel walked into the church, holding a red dress. Sebastian slid two sides of the glass out of the cart, so that the wind would blow right through it. As Ciel entered the church I heard the critical whispers of the people already inside, and, for some unknown reason, I was scared. I broke out in a small sweat, and I had chill bumps. Something about their whispers bothered me.
I pushed the feeling out as I went inside the church and leaned against the wall. Their critical whispers continued. They were talking about how disrespectful 'Earl Phantomhive' was being. It slightly angered me but I hid my anger as I spoke.
"Not true. What was the deceased nick name? What was her favorite color?" I got a few shocked stares. And a couple people looked away guiltily. One man, however, decided to open his big mouth.
"How disrespectful, you little brat. Who are you? Why are you here?" He demanded. A couple of people shot him angry glares but he was too focused on me to notice. He got closer, his mouth still blathering on.
Once he was close enough, I leaned forward. The first thing I noticed was his odor, he needed some serious cleaning. I smiled as I leaned into the crook of his neck and kept going until my mouth was at his ear. "Remember the Viscount of Druitt's ball? I know you do, because I saw you there, flirting with any and every lady. You even followed me with your eager gaze. It was rather disgusting. Oh, maybe that's not enough information, you were doing that to every woman. Maybe the name Melody will ring a bell?" I heard his breath hitch as he recognized me. I leaned away from him thankful for the fresh air. I took a couple more steps away so I was deeper in the shadows. I smiled and the man looked like he had seen a ghost as he stood there staring into the nothingness.
...
After Ciel had thrown the red dress over Madame Red and beautiful rose petals from the cart filled the air of the church with beauty, we went home.
When I sat down in the carriage, I realized that there was something in my pocket. I shoved my hand in it and felt the cool metal of the chain Undertaker had given me plus something else. I pulled out the other thing and looked at it. It was the death charm! That sneaky little-
"What's that?" I heard Ciel ask. I jumped, probably a foot off the seat, and hid the charm behind my back.
"You're there?" I asked, rather stupidly, if I might add.
Ciel gave me a confused look. "What are you talking about?"
I smiled, trying to cover up my dim-witted moment. "What are you talking about?"
Ciel's eyebrows rose. I repeated the action.
"What exactly were we talking about?" I asked after an awkward moment of silence.
"Umm… You know… Uhh…" Ciel attempted to remember. I had a mini celebration in my head. Success! He forgot about… Wait, what did he forget about? I forgot.
We sat in the carriage quietly engrossed in our thoughts, trying to figure out just what we were talking about before.
I eventually gave up and started to talk about some random junk and Ciel watched quietly and spoke when he thought he must. It was rather irritating talking to someone who doesn't reply very often, but I was complaining. I had bunch of stuff I wanted to say. Eventually we started to talk about Undertaker, which is the only thing I can really remember talking about.
"He's really friendly and funny."
"I find him rather ridiculous and irritating."
"Don't be such a downer, Ciel. You gotta look at the best in people. Come on, give it a try. Name something good about Undertaker." There was a long pause. But I enjoyed watching Ciel's face go from angry to confused to defeat. He cleared his throat, signaling he was about to give his best answer.
"He's-"
I burst out laughing at the pained look on his face. I couldn't help it, he looked like he was constipated.
He stared at me slightly shocked, but definitely unamused. My loud laughs finally subsided to quiet giggles until they completely stopped.
"Please continue. But, also I think you drop the constipated look." I said, still giggling. He turned beet red and refused by looking away. My eyes widened when I realized wasn't going to answer.
"Please, Ciel!" I pleaded. He peeked at me from the corner of his eye.
I gave him my best puppy dog eyes. "You gotta! It's not good for you to hate everyone! I mean, you need to look at the best in people every once in a while." My face grew sad. Don't tell Ciel, but I was acting.
"What's wrong now?" He asked warily.
"You probably don't even see anything good in me. I'm probably just a nuisance. You probably hate me." Ok. Not my best acting and I'm pretty sure that last sentence overdid it, but I'm trying. You got to give me credit. I'm going up against Ciel. No one has ever returned from the game against this little player. Ok. Not my best wording on that. He's not a player, but a player. You know what I mean? Of course not. Just forget I said anything.
Ciel was looking directly at me, trying to keep a straight face and to not give in. He was about to give me an answer when suddenly the carriage stopped.
We were home. Dang.
...
Once inside, I followed Ciel and Sebastian to the study. Ciel sat at the desk, Sebastian stood in front of the desk and a little off to the side, and I sat in one of the chairs at the front of the desk.
"What an interesting case with interesting results." Sebastian stated in the awkward silence.
"You should know." I mumbled, still upset at the fact that I never got a reply from Ciel.
"Very." Ciel added. He had been avoiding eye contact with me or any contact for that matter.
"I'm guessing we are going to head home soon." I guessed.
Ciel nodded his head in affirmation, still avoiding me. I finally snapped under the curiosity.
"Ciel!" I whined. He flinched and peeked over his news paper to see my scowling face. I squinted at him, annoyed.
"Stop avoiding me!" I bawled, very childlike.
"What do you want me to do?" He cried right back. Sebastian looked very amused at our catfight.
"I don't know, just stop shunning me! It makes me feel like a nuisance!" I whimpered. "And Sebastian, don't think I don't see you over there laughing at us." I said dangerously without even looking at him. He chuckled. I pursed my lips and turned around to face him. He simply turned to Ciel and started talking.
"I don't mean to interrupt you and your little catfight. But I want to confirm that we leave for the house tomorrow. Am I correct?" I glared at him, not entirely pleased with how the subject keeps getting changed.
"You are." Ciel confirmed, changing the subject. I continued to glare at him. He seemed uncomfortable under my glance.
Suddenly I stood up, much faster than I should have been able to. Their eyes shot towards me.
"I must excuse myself from this." I gestured with my hands towards them. I walked towards the door ignoring their stares. Once outside, I listened for a second.
"What exactly is going on between you two? I must admit, I wasn't paying much attention to you while you were in the carriage."
"Who knows? She asked me a question, burst out laughing before I could answer, then threw a tantrum when I didn't answer."
I smiled. I'm not sure why, but I smiled. I then walked off to my room to pack.
...
When the carriage pulled up at the house the next day, we all had to check the address twice because it didn't look anything like we had left it. I burst out laughing at the expressions of Sebastian and Ciel. When I was inside, I hid from Sebastian and any other servant. There was no way I was cleaning this mess. I even learned how to control that Soul Cover and I used it constantly. I was not going to be found by Sebastian. After the first few hours I'm pretty sure he notice I was pulling something and sent everyone on a hunt to find me. I bet there is some kind of reward. I'm a wanted criminal wanted dead or alive. Skip the dead part.
Well, right now I was hiding in Ciel's office, and when someone knocked on the door I would duck under his desk. He claimed that he had agreed to help me because it would irritate Sebastian, but I knew it was his way of apologizing for what happened at the town house. I didn't care either way but the latter made Ciel my new favorite in the house. Shh! Secret!
"How are you managing this?" Ciel asked.
"What do you mean?" I whispered; Sebastian has incredible hearing.
"I mean how is Sebastian not detecting your soul?"
"What soul?"
Ciel's eyes widened.
"Just kidding." I corrected. He clearly relaxed.
"Well….?" Ciel nudged.
"Remember the confrontation with Grell?" I asked. He nodded. "Well, I was there the whole time and Sebastian didn't notice. I discovered that I can hide my soul from his nose using Soul Cover. It seems to always be there though, and the only time he can smell my soul is when he can see me."
Ciel's eyes widened. I suddenly had an idea. "I now know my second question!" I exclaimed. I abruptly realized my mistake. I had raised my voice too loud. Hopefully Sebastian hadn't heard me.
"Kitt!" Ciel whispered harshly. I flinched.
"Whoops… Hehe…" I laughed sheepishly.
I felt my heart stop when there suddenly was a knock at the door. Me and Ciel exchanged a panicked look. I dove under his desk as quietly as possible, which, I must say, is pretty dang quiet.
"Yes?" Ciel called to the visitor.
"Excuse me, Young Master, but may I have a word?" I heard Sebastian's smooth voice called as the door opened. I held my breath as his footsteps came closer.
"What is it?" Ciel said slight rudeness echoing in his voice.
"As you know, the manor is in shambles and we need all the hands we can get. However, one has disappeared."
"Is that so?"
"Well, I have reason to believe you are harboring the criminal in here."
"Is that so?" Ciel repeated. I could imagine Sebastian with the tick mark. I silently smiled.
"Yes."
"Is that all you came to say?" Ciel pestered.
'I love you Ciel!' I thought silently. But I quickly changed my mind when the desk disappeared. I looked up at Sebastian and smiled sheepishly. He was holding the desk in the air and staring down at me, a disapproving frown on his face. After a couple of more seconds, I dropped the smile.
"That's just plain wrong, you cheater." I scowled.
He raised his eyebrows. "Is it? Then what do you call it when you interfere with my-"
"Soul sniffer?" I finished for him.
"Not exactly what I was going to say, but sure."
"I call it leveling the playing field."
Ciel chuckled. Sebastian looked up at him in surprise; Ciel doesn't laugh often.
I, however, have seen him laugh multiple times. I took the distraction and used it to my advantage. I leapt up and took off using my full speed. I'm getting good at using my abilities to save me from dangerous situations involving Sebastian. I left my Soul Cover on and ran like my life depended on it all the way outside. Once I was outside I leapt into a tree, sitting on one of the highest branches.
The wind was cool and I felt completely relaxed and refreshed. It was peaceful for about ten minutes, and then I nearly fell out of the tree when I was startled by a meow from right below me. I looked down to see a silky black cat looking up at me. I climbed down from the tree and the cat followed. I moved stealthily to the back of the garden to a big, fat tree. Once there I sat down on the side facing away from the house. The cat soon appeared in my lap and I petted it until it was curled up in my lap, purring and we were both asleep.
...
I thought she would be here. I needed to see her. With that black beautiful hair that could rival the best quality silk and her delicate pink paws like a ripe peach. I followed her scent, yes I know how wrong that sounds but that's what I did. I knew she was in the garden, so I might as well find out where.
Her smell led me to the back of the garden to one of the big oak trees. There she lay, asleep. There was also another Kitten lying there, but it was the person.
I laid down the cat food and pulled out a slip of paper. On it, read:
You got lucky this time.
Plus some other words I marked out. But who cares about that. I stared for a moment, enjoying the peace and the view of the two of them. My two favorite things. I wish it would last forever. Wait, why do I keep having these thoughts? I'm not falling for her. But she's so….
"Perfect."
I turned and walked away.
