Tears continued to stream from the demigod's face as his hands clenched the empty air that used to be his brother. Eros stood by his side, hand on his shoulder for comfort, alert for the slightest sound from outside. The pair remained silent, until Percy broke.
"Tri…" Percy choked out, "Tri…ton…"
The demigod held up the black arrow, looking at with sadness. His expression quickly changed to rage as his hands began to shake. Yelling and cursing at the top of his lungs, insults were hurled at the Olympians, most towards Hades, the Twins, and his own father.
"Perseus, I can understand your anger," He said sincerely, but in a harsh whisper, "But keep it down."
"I won't!" Percy yelled, smacking a fist towards the ground, breaking the arrow shaft in half, "I won't keep my voice down for those bastards!"
"The arr-"
"I want them to suffer," Came the malicious reply, "I want those damned Olympian to suffer. Not to go out with ease." He choked a little, "I want… to raise hell!"
The last few words echoed around the temple as Percy grabbed his brother's pendant from the floor. Strapping it on to his neck, he could feel the coolness of the sea rushing through his veins. He could hear the rushing of the ocean. He could feel the water around him.
He could feel the moisture in the air being absent in two places close-by and out the window.
"I've got you, you bitches!" He said menacingly, shaking of Eros' grip and diving out the window, "And I'm going to make you pay!"
At Camp Half-Blood
Chiron galloped towards the Eros cabin, smoothly weaving in and out of the huge crowd of campers. Noticing the stares he was getting, he reduced his gallop to a trot, trying to stave off the attention for a little while.
As he passed by the various cabins, the quietness of the normally bright and noisy Iris cabin caught his attention. However, his concerns over the huntress "visit" to Eros had overruled all else.
"Hey!" He heard a camper yell from the small circle in which the Eros cabin was located in, "What are you guys doing in there?"
"We are not guys, boy." A huntress, if Chiron guessed correctly, spat back with venom, "And what we do here is no concern of yours."
Chiron slowly stepped onto the scene, briefly shielding his huge frame by the side of the Hecate cabin. Though he could not see anything, he preferred to stay within earshot. The huntresses were normally rude to him without Artemis in the area.
"Then let Lee out," The boy responded.
"And why should we?"
"Because holding a cabin captive is against camp laws." Chiron spoke calmly as he smoothly walked on the scene. "And I think it would be best for the hunters to abide them, if they continue to remain in said camp."
"Oh shove away, you foolish horse," The young huntress replied, "What we're doing is no co-"
"Jess," A voice, familiar to Chiron, said from inside, "Show some respect." Thalia soon stepped out, wordlessly commanding Jess to get inside.
"Thank you, Thalia." Chiron said with a small smile, "Now, I would like to know what's going on over here."
"I'm sorry, Chiron," Thalia said hesitantly as she brushed aside her hair nervously, "But what we're doing is for gods' ears only."
"Oh that's a load of bull," the camper behind Chiron said, "You're holding Lee and his siblings hostage! Heck, you've even got half your hunters in Nike!"
"Shu-"
"Is this true?" Chiron asked, a hint of anger in his voice as he interrupted Thalia.
"Not e-"
"Is this true or not?" The centaur said more forcefully, "Are you holding my campers hostage in their own cabins?"
"We don't answer to you." Phoebe said, coming up to Thalia's side. "You may have been Thalia's mentor, but you weren't mine." She pushed Thalia back inside the cabin, "Good day." She dismissed the pair over her shoulder as she followed Thalia.
"Are they at Cabin Nike, Jared?" Chiron asked the 14-year-old camper standing at his side.
"Yes, sir." Jared answered, his blue eyes trying see through the wire-meshed windows of the camp. "And I do-" He suddenly and stealthily rushed forward to the side of the cabin and picked something up from the ground. Stealthily walking towards the Hecate cabin, he motioned for Chiron to follow him.
"Lee managed to send a message," Jared told the camp head as he held up a balled-up scrap of paper, "There's a small hole in the mesh at this side." He opened up the scrap, and read the message scrawled in it.
His face paled.
"Dad's working for Percy." Jared read out loud, earning a gasp from Chiron.
In Eros' "backyard", Philadelphia
Percy walked through the alleyways behind Eros' temple, the pendant wrapped around his hand allowing him to kick up a snowy fog. His sword was out as he walked brashly, taunting the twins. Garbage cans clanged noisily for every step Percy took.
He bashed his arms together, but the guards underneath were muffled by the skin. Using his sword, he skinned his arms until he could see the bronze guards underneath. He relaxed his grip on his sword, letting it withdraw back into his arm.
"Come out, come out, and play!" Percy yelled out maniacally, clanging his arms loudly, "Come out you spineless bastards!"
Silence was all that answered, but Percy could already sense where the twins were.
"Abandoning all you stand for!" Percy continued to yell as he spun around in the fog, "Like how you abandoned your own mother!"
He could sense the twins flex their muscles.
"I visited her on my escape from the underworld, you know." Percy said out loud, his wings noiselessly slipping out, "She was a nice lady." He heard Artemis hitch her breath close by, "That's right, Arty. She was."
He flew upwards, barely avoiding the arrow that was shot towards him.
"Tut tut, Apollo." Percy chided from above the fog, his wing tips barely grazing the windows of the alleyway, "Do you really think it's courageous to attack someone from behind?"
"You killed our mother!" Apollo yelled from his hiding place as he cocked another arrow, "You are no longer a hero, you coward!"
"And you think you aren't?" Percy whispered from right behind Apollo, the rainbow tattoos on his legs glowing dimly. "Do you really think you're as brave as me? As brave as your children?"
"I don't kill mothers." Apollo whispered back harshly, gripping his bow tightly.
"No," Percy said, his sword coming out of his arm, "You plague them with a curse way worse th-" Apollo's bow connected with Percy's jaw, sending the demigod sprawling back. The god jumped away, firing a volley of arrows, most of them exploding on contact.
"I hope you get flung into Tartarus, you bitch!" Apollo cursed as he landed on the soft snow. He eyed the smoky residue left behind by his arrows, searching for Percy's body. He saw a black, lumpy mass in the smoke.
He felt his sister land right next to him, a hand on his shoulder.
"He's dead." Artemis stated, "It's over."
They stood in silence, till Apollo broke down.
"He was our friend, lil sis." Apollo said, tears forming in his eyes, "But he went mad… He went…"
"I know," Artemis said, a grim tone in her voice as she gave her brother a tight hug, "I know."
"I supported him," Apollo confessed into the crook of her neck, choking up, "In the meetings… the prop…" He trailed off.
"I know." His sister replied absent mindedly, "But it was only a matter of time." She stroked her brother's hair comfortingly, "The wars were getting to him."
"N…" Apollo began to say, but he gave up. He knew he was being a coward, but he couldn't bear his sister knowing their deceit. He hugged his sister more tightly, thinking about what all they did to Percy. His tears flowed more freely as his legs gave way from the guilt.
The twins sat on the snow, in each others' arms.
"Arty," Apollo asked, looking up at his sister "Could you… Could you sing mom's…"
"Two little immortals," Artemis sang melodiously, "Day and Night. Each holding a light."
"doth warm the hearts of all below," Apollo joined in, his voice as melodious as Artemis'. "And all know"
"light lends strength and care" The twins sang softly. "a guardian; a constant prayer, now and always ,to the end of days, the light will blaze, th-"
"The light will blaze," A darker and more sinister voice finished."Ready for round two?"
At Camp Half-Blood
"What do you mean the hunters have Nike and Eros hostage?" Annabeth yelled in their recently built war-room. She smashed her hand on the pool table to show her anger, "I know they're on our side and all, but still," She looked at all the others in attendance, "They're our fel-"
"Well," The new Apollo cabin counselor said, "I may not be Will or Malcolm, but you've got to see it from their point of view." He pointed upwards. "If their parents are working for Percy, don't you think it'd be best to take their children captive?"
Annabeth stood shocked, trying to find words to say. Her mind whirred past all the tactics. She brushed past all logic. "You know, Steve," She said, a hint of condescension in her voice, "Back before the Titan war, we had a motto. One motto that stuck by all the veterans."
"Never abandon your friends." A voice answered from the back of the room, scaring most of the campers.
"Hello, Nico." Annabeth nodded, "Any news from Olympus?"
"Officially, everything fine as one of Demeter's daisy." Nico announced, seating himself on the mahogany pool table.
"Unofficially?" Katie Gardener asked.
"According to the dungeons," Nico said, his eyes still closed, "Iris, Nike and Eros are all "working" for Percy."
"And what about…" Annabeth trailed off.
"Jake's fine." Nico said off-handedly, "Hephaestus assured me he's doing alright."
"Heph-"
"Apollo's off with the crazy huntress, remember?"
"Chiron," Annabeth asked after mulling everything over, "What do you make of all this?" All eyes turned towards the man in the wheelchair. He had remained silent after announcing the occupation of the cabins, and was currently scratching his beard in thought.
"Chiron?" Another camper asked.
"Oh yes," Chiron answered abruptly, "It isn't what I think that matters. Truly, what matters here, is what you think, young Nico." The eyes turned to the prince of death. "I detected a slight emphasis on the phrase working."
Nico scratched the back of his neck as he contemplated on what he had to say, "You see, Chiron." He started running his hand over the blade of his sword, "I know what you all saw the last time we were in New York. Percy was crazy, I admit it. But you have to admit, there's a method behind his madness."
"What are you talking about?" Annabeth asked skeptically.
"Truth be told," Nice admitted with a sigh, "I have no idea. But a little while ago, a friend of mine told me that all is not what it seems."
"Nico, are you sure this isn't about your c-"
"All is not what it seems." Nico reiterated, his eyes flashing a bit at Annabeth's accusation. True, everyone might know about his orientation. But what he did not want was people to think that that was clouding his judgment.
The room was silent. Not a pin drop could be heard as every camper mulled over what was just said.
"That settles it," Chiron said, "I suggest we take back our campers, agreed?"
A bright flash enveloped the room.
"Chiron," Dionysus said chidingly as the smell of grapes filled the room, "Is this a coup I smell?"
"Not a coup," Chiron responded, "Merely placing the cabins under "new management"."
"Are you not satisfied with the Council's decrees?" The wine god asked, a threat implied in the tone of his voice, "Or do you want to join those traitors? Those girls are following our commands, and I suggest you do the same."
"And what is your command, Dionysus?" Chiron asked, a mere hint of annoyance and anger in his voice.
"Stay out of this." The wine god then disappeared with another flash, also taking Annabeth along with him. Not many of the campers were surprised at that, for they were used to Annabeth being summoned to Olympus.
Nico coughed a bit before saying, "Damned alcoholic." His statement was met with a murmur of agreement. "Now what do we do?"
"Lou," Chiron said, resting his chin on his hands, "I take it your mother has taught all your children how to shield their thoughts?" She nodded from where she stood. "Good. I expect you to share that knowledge with all those present here."
"Chiron," Steve said, flabbergasted, "You can't seriously be planning to defy the Council?"
"And why shouldn't we?" The centaur countered, "We do it on a daily basis. Some more than others." He shared a smile with Nico. "Now, after Lou has taught all those present, I would like a small group to head over to the Iris cabin." He saw a few people volunteer. "And another to head over to stables. Bring back any information pertaining to the last 24 hours."
The campers in the room dispersed till Chiron and Nico only remained.
"You know why they took Annabeth, don't you?" Nico stated, cleaning his nails with the tip of his sword.
"I suspect as such." Chiron said, rolling himself to the edge of the pool table. "How long did you know?"
"Ever since Rockerfeller." Came the reply, "He didn't sound as broken as he used to be. Angry? Yes, but not broken. I met an old friend who helped confirm my suspicion. And you?"
"Ever since I smelled the slightest hint of grape on one of his shirts." He admitted dejectedly.
"Don't worry, it ain't your fault." Nico said, clasping a hand on Chiron's shoulder, "That's all the evidence you had. When do you think we should tell the rest of them?"
"When they begin to question the sanity of their parents." Chiron answered as he led the way out, "When they begin to question."
In Eros' "backyard"
"How…" Artemis stammered, "How are... How are you alive? I checked you myself! My senses told me you were dead!" Her brother and she stood up quickly, bows drawn out as they pressed their backs to each other.
A crater was all that remained where Percy once lay.
"Your senses were wrong." Percy's bodiless voice echoed through the alleyway as thick fog rolled in. "But it's not surprising, considering your infatuation with me. I'm sure you were heartbroken at my demise."
"That bitch." Artemis cursed, throwing herself into the fog, leaving her brother behind.
Apollo stood his ground, his bow still held high. He rotated around the spot as his ears strained themselves to pick up on Percy's whereabouts. He could hear a mouse's heartbeat in the walls of one of the buildings. He could hear the flies buzzing over a garbage can a few meters away.
But he could not hear Percy.
He felt a heavy mass rush into him, throwing him to the ground. Trying to get up, he found himself pined to the floor by his stomach. He tried to move, but his hands were held above his head, held by some cold shackles. A hand covered his mouth, preventing him from yelling.
"Your little sister left you alone, didn't she?" Percy whispered into Apollo's ears, his face still out of the god's field of vision. Apollo trashed around in his spot. "I don't think she can hear you." Percy whispered mockingly, "After all, no one can."
Percy moved his face till Apollo could see him, but what the god saw shocked him. Earlier, Percy has sea green eyes that would change with his personality. But now, the demigod only had one eye. The other was fused together, a burnt scar.
"Like the new look?" Percy chided, pressing Riptide against Apollo's chin, "I hope you don't feel too proud about it. You didn't give it." He ran his other hand over the burnt eye, "I got it as a gift from the underworld."
Apollo's eyes still remained open, still in shock and what he saw before him.
"But you made me get this, Apollo," Percy said menacingly, "Your blasted prophecies. You made me into a monster."
Riptide traced itself towards Apollo's cheek.
"And now I think, it's time to return the favor" And he plunged Riptide into Apollo's eye socket.
Artemis, Eros' "backyard"
"Come here, you sneaky bastard." Artemis whispered furiously as she rushed towards a silhouette in the fog. She plunged a hunting dagger through its chest, only to find it fall to pieces, like snow. From where she stood, she could see many more silhouettes dotting the alleys.
Closing her eyes, Artemis spread her senses. She tried to locate Percy. She tried to locate her brother. But to no avail as it seemed to her that they had disappeared from the place. She rushed back to where she once was, only to find her path blocked.
"I'm sorry, my dear Artemis," Eros said, his white wings filling up the entire alleyway, "But I can't let you do that. Got a friend to help out."
"He's no one's friend," Artemis spat, aiming an arrow at Eros' head, "He is nothing more than a monster."
Eros shook his head, a sad smile on his face, "Lady Artemis," he said respectfully, "I'm afraid you're the only one who doesn't know who the true monsters are."
"What is that supposed to mean?!" Artemis commanded, "Are you perhaps implying that I'm a monste-"
"Would never dream of it," Eros said, showing her his palms as sign of relention. "But I think you're close to figuring it out. All it needs, is little pl-" He was interrupted by a yell.
"Apollo!" Artemis yelled, jumping over Eros and rushing to where her brother was. She stopped short.
Her brother lay on the ground, his head covered with gold ichor. His hands were over his eyes as he trashed around. He yelled for his sister and she rushed to him, concern etched on her face. Comforting him, she pulled his hands away slowly.
She gasped.
"He…" Apollo whimpered, "He took my eye… And I can't heal it…" He held up a dark piece of wood, covered in ichor. It was a splinter, from the arrow of death. "An eye for an eye... He said. He… He… wants us to suffer."
"Let's take you to Olympus." Artemis said hurriedly, picking her brother up and flashing away. The twins left, leaving nothing behind save for a pool of ichor. The alleyways remained silent upon their departure.
The winds whistled through. Not a sound was heard aside from it. No soul scurried across the sand.
Eros walked silently towards the center, soon accompanied by Percy.
"Where are you going?" Eros asked, not questioning as to why Percy had only one eye, or as to why he took Apollo's.
"To the one person I know who could hide this from me." Percy answered, tracing a finger over his eye. "She's becoming weaker. I can feel it." He stretched his wings. "She's trying to shield me from the Olympians, and with this much power inside me, I think she's nearly spent."
Eros nodded, already knowing who the goddess was. "Why did she hide it from you in the first place?"
"So I can send them a message," Percy chuckled, "They wanted a monster. I'm giving them one."
And the demigod flew away.
