Author Note: So this is a short chapter. But I figured, short or not, I'd rather put it up and then start work on the next one rather than try and think if I could make this longer. Hope you like it! Read and Review!

Chapter 10

"Nate! Stop it!" Mikan tried to glare at him but she could not hold back her laughter.

"Stop what?" He asked innocently even as he traced her collarbone with the back of his hand.

"I'm driving. Stop messing around!" Mikan snapped but the effect was ruined when she brushed her cheek against his hand.

He smiled and cupped her cheek before moving his hand to the back of her neck.

Next thing he knew, their car was careening out of control. He heard Mikan yell as she tried to get it under control. Natsume scanned the road, trying to figure out exactly what was happening. So he saw the truck coming, and tried to jerk the steering wheel and get them out of its way. But the truck turned to hit them in the back right corner. The car flipped and slid on the road. When they finally skidded to a stop, Natsume checked on Mikan.

"Kai?" His voice was hoarse with fear for her. He undid his seatbelt and fell down onto the roof of the car. Gently cradling her, he undid Mikan's seatbelt and lowered her down next to him. Her eyelids fluttered and he felt something tight loosen in his chest.

Before he could pull them both out of the wreckage and take care of the ones who'd made them crash, he felt a sharp psin in his neck. Even as the world went hazy around him, he tried to grab her, tried to stop them. He failed.

Natsume woke up with a splitting headache. He tried to sit up but a hand on his shoulder pushed him back into the bed. He stared uncomprehendingly at his mother.

"Kai?" He rasped.

Viska helped her son drink a glass of water, before she answered. "She was taken."

Natsume closed his eyes for one brief moment and then he sat up. "I need to find her."

"You nearly died." Viska snapped.

"I am still alive." He retorted, about to pull out his IV.

"And you won't be any use to her in the condition you're in. What are you going to do? Ask her kidnappers to surrender?" Viska's words were as sharp as her tone. "There is nothing you can do out there that is not already being done by her family and yours. Rest and get better so you can actually aid in the rescue."

Natsume took a deep breath and let it out slowly. "Tell me everything," he said letting go of the IV and settling back on the pillows.

Adrian washed his hands until they ran clear of blood while his son watched in silence.

"Just spit it out." Adrian snapped.

"You're losing it." Tsubasa answered, his tone even.

"My daughter is missing."

"You beating the shit out of people who do not know anything is not going to change that." Tsubasa's voice was low.

"Then find me someone who knows something." Adrian said coldly, jerking his head in the direction of the door. Tsubasa stared at his father for a heartbeat and then strode out. Considering the condition of his usually sane father, he did not relish the thought of meeting Natsume. Natsume was a loose cannon at the best of times, and these were not the best of times in any sense.

Natsume excersized precisely according to the instructions of his doctor, but all the while his eyes were focused on his phone. When it rang, he answered immediately.

"I found someone who you should talk to." Ruka told his brother.

"On my way." Natsume cut the call and was out the door in less than twenty seconds.

"But you're in no…" the doctor called to his retreating back.

"This will have to do. That he stayed here as long as he did is a miracle." Viska patted the doctor's cheek as she followed her son out at a more sedate pace.

"It's been 24 hours. Tell me what you got." Natsume asked, tone mild. His brother was not fooled.

"It was a well planned attack, which meant that they at least had an inkling of your schedule."

"I don't care. Talk to me about where she is."

Ruka took a deep breath and then said the words he had been dreading, "She could be anywhere by now." The blow he had expected never came. Natsume simply nodded, turned on his heel and left.

"This is going to be ugly." Youichi said to his twin, eyes set on their older brother's retreating back.

"Yep." Ruka nodded in agreement.
